I have this same Kirby, and it's working like new to this very day. I will say that the suction fan is not meant to vacuum up nuts and bolts or coins. Those things can and will break the blades on your fan. You done a great great job with cleaning, and [polishing... My Kirby Heritage II is an awesome vacuum, and still running like new. I just placed an order for the Kirby Sentria G10D. Awesome vacuum cleaner, You cant go wrong with a Kirby.......
Very nice Video. My family has had Kirby's for over 60 years. I still have two of the originals from 1950. two from 71 and an 84 model. :) all working..
My great grandma had one. My great great grandma had one. My grandma had one. My mother had one. I have 3... yeah we are part of the Kirby family... these machines will take good care of your family...
Very cool, dude. I do recommend that you reseal the fan case by using a silicone or latex caulk, so that there won't be any dust leakage. I would also install a new belt and a new disposable bag.
I’ve found that flitz polish and #0000 steel wool works phenomenally. Then follow up with a buffing wheel then wipe down with a microfiber rag to remove all the polish.
I used that Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish on my Kirby Classic Omega and it did a great job as well. It does a good job on bringing back faded paint as well. You did a good job on the Vacuum. :)
The cylinder with the brushes is called the "beater bar", because it beats the fibers in the carpet to dislodge the debris. Those are great machines. When I was a child, my mother would say my floor was like a mine field because of the toys and debris on it. As a result in my adult life, I have left my floor cluttered and dirty and have never suffered a successful home invasion.
yeah if somebody broke into my house they would be tripping over shit. and i'm almost always within arms reach of a hammer or pipe wrench so would have plenty of weapons to select from if anybody came in haha.
It is not called a beater bar it's called a Brushroll. A beater bar is what was on the older Hoover machines brushrolls i.e. The Hoover junior and senior
To be more specific the beater bars are either a metal or plastic strip where there would otherwise be a brush strip in eureka or sanitaires case it’s more like beater nubs on the their vibragroomer 2

Story time here in a few others as well. First of all my parents owned to Kirby's over the span of numerous years. I don't remember which model the first was. It was one of the older ones that actually had the metal vacuum impeller vs. Plastic like the Heritage 2 The second one we had was the Heritage 2. The problem we really had with the hair of his chew is overtime the vacuum impeller was literally eaten up and just lay breaking off chunks overtime of course. And evidently those were not really designed to be replaceable readily as far as I've Been Told. So if you do have one the Kirby's that it has the plastic impeller you might want a baby get just a bit! But the newer ones have one is red or replaceable and a higher quality material! Not to mention a hose that is actually really repairable and the whole thing seems to be a bit more service friendly. Kind of right-to-repair sort of thing as well you know! Not sure if kirbywood still honor lifetime warranty on older vacuums if you were the original owner or not to tell you the truth. But in theory if we would have gone that route we could have gotten a new Kirby when the others had live beyond their means! I'm not sure if this would still apply to modern-day or even if it would warranty claim would be honored! I know who originally they would have a lifetime warranty! But you know how things like that go nowadays or even just memorize years back not exactly what they should be!. Also my father one of his jobs he had when he first started out was a salesperson for Kirby! His first vacuum sale was to my grandmother AKA his mother. Sheehan hand at Kirby probably longer than we had ours as well and that one really did last oldest one I knew that was still running at least in the family I've seen others over but no one I knew personally. I hear the brush life on a Kirby is about twenty years of average use as well. Also all the attachments that still fit the original hoes will fit to hoes nowadays as well. We had our old attachment heads and rug renovator nozzle so-called converted to work with the new Kirby which actually would involve driving a screw into a certain spot to hit the new safety interlock switch. Even though they were compatible because the interlock switch mechanism on the new one that was the only modification that had to be made get the older front head attachments to work! And truly if you use the handy Butler accessory probably the only power tool it could clean up after itself when the job is done ✔
Hah your ponytail is ballin, sweet Kirb. I picked up a 1-CR and an Omega the other day and they have similar assembly, I'm currently going through them!
Hi, good tutorial on taking the heritage apart.. i just picked up one at an estate sale. I can't get the zipper unstuck! I don't want to break it, what do you recommend? Also, do I have to take so much apart to put a new light bulb in? Thanks.
I'm looking through that room and in my mind saying, I had one of those, and one of those, and that, and a few of those! You sure have cool stuff! I junked so much :(
You can bye new bags that look just like that on ebay you can also take off the plastic part and turn it inside out and wash it in the washer on your filter bag
That Kirby is being abused just by being used in that room. I spent around 500 bucks restoring a Legend II and would never vacuum over large debris and cables and crap like that. Holy shit. You gotta preserve these things.
I’m intrigued by the design of the impeller. I have a couple of Kirby H2s and they are amazing in every way- unfortunately including their mass. But I would have thought the impeller design would have the veins reversed.
There are two things you seriously neglected. One, you didn’t change the metal fan, which are prone to cracks, and chips, nor did you reseal the fan case.
We had a Kirby back in the 60s ...... It was sure a work-horse that lasted for ever ..... It was just so stinkin heavy ....... I went light one year and bought a $70 Dirt Devil that lasted one year ...... Every part was plastic including bearings ...
I know im late here but my father who was a body man for 30 years taught me how to wet sand, so what i did with my Classic Omega was sand with 3000 then move to 5000, then use mothers on it. Looks new now.
Next time try some stuff called Never Dull, You can find in in the automotive section at Wal-Mart. I use to use it on my aluminium frame in my old dirt bike and it made it look brand new and its easy to use.
I might do a video where I test different polishes like never dull. Thanks for telling me about that. I have several bits of aluminium I found in the woods that are really crusty. I could try it on them as an extreme test.
I was thinking the same thing, but I forgot they actually called him Kirby. I also have a 1955 sunbeam t20b toaster just like the brave little toaster.
Compare this to Dyson. I tried to repair our ball Dyson by dissassembly and gave up. Plastic hell. My sister has had a Kirby for decades. They are LOUD and heavy but last, so going to grab the Kirby that I saw at local Habitat for Restore.
The ONLY product that will make ALL Kirby's shine like new is Mother Mag, that is all I use at my store and I've been a Kirby dealer since the Kirby Tradition, and that unit was released in 1977. So yeah I know a thing or two about Kirby's
@@RinoaL Oh I've tried others back in the 70's when I first opened the store, and had the the last if the Classic 3 and the very first Traditions that as a dealer I was selling, and to this very day the only product I use is Mother Mag and a hand held buffer polisher, and its makes the dulest and pitted Kirby's shine like brand new. At my store I even sell restored machines nothing Older than the first Heritage as most customers don't want to deal with the Em-Tor and would rather have a disposable bag. So yes I've tried other products but the ONLY product that stays in my store to shine my Kirby's is Mother Mag.
Also I can never understand why you would even want to have a pilot light of vacuum when you would know of the things running because of the motor little load the headlamp any insight on that? We used to have one of those models but could never realize why they would even do that or never had a situation where that would come into play as needing to have a power indicator pilot light. Maybe that would come into play in some situation but have never run acrost that so any comments would be appreciated
That was some stubborn metal not wanting to get clean :o have you ever thought about doing an hour-long Rinoa Super-Genius special? :D I imagine it would be difficult to gather enough footage for one video like that though o-o but I would totally watch it
actually it would be easy to make an hour video. just not at the pace i would want. ussually my random bits are like 45 minutes of footage i cut down. this kirby video prolly has 2 hours of raw footage. it would be difficult to find something interesting enough for one video other than a live stream. i'm a big fan of 15 minute videos. i want to make my own version of "the secret life of machines" someday and that might be 20 minutes or more. but those would require much more effort and scripting than my regular videos.
smallenginedude71 Lenovo only bought think pad, lol only Google or Microsoft could afford IBM. But even they would break the bank. IBM is just too big to be bought out. Would be like buying coca cola or Pepsi.
Hi Super-Genius Well I am also a big IBM/Lenovo fan,,boy :-) If anyone search IBM or Lenovo server here on TH-cam they will get a tons of my server videos. Lenovo bought all of the x86 server stuff from IBM,, so IBM only has some Power systems and some high end storages and backup left.. I have no idea where they are going.
clean and lube the brush bar bearings, the motor bearings also seem a little tight, might have fine dust in them, id strip them down wash em out and relube them all
jusb1066 yeah i figure it will last a long time. but the thing is i use it so infrequently that it doesnt matter right now. i'll prolly do another video on general motor maintenance latter and show how to maintain the motors in several appliances. but as for now i'm a bit tired of it and gonna do something else for a bit :P i hope my next video is vacuum cannon. gonna shoot a ping pong ball at 300+mph with my new vacuum pump.
Didn't test it yet, Ill need to get some good acid to dissolve it. I'll be making it a separate video. But I don't think its gold just because of the prevelance of crappy jewelry that is painted gold. Ya know like the stuff you get for 50 cents at a bulk vending machine. Not counting these links look to be made of flat metal. Usually when I see gold chains they are made from looped wire.
Smashing vaccume cleaner :-)) Please check the earth on that aluminium case, my dad got a good shock from an old aluminium electric drill, keep safe :-)
agree with the earth check, also check the length of the wire, as vacuum cables get a lot of damage, but this is sure the easiest one to replace, as for drills i bet it was an old style back and decket metal body one, they were deathtraps, rubber insulation inside that broke down ugh!
jusb1066 well the metal casing isnt connected to anything with power. thats why theres only 2 power leads and no ground. i'm not going to worry about it too much right now since this one seems ok without a ground. oh and the power cable looks great.
jusb1066 Yes your spot on, it was a full aluminium body drill, it looked amazing but it went odd one day and my dad got 240vac up the arm, he jumped, really!!. After that he took an axe to the rubber cable and in the bin it went with the warning to us "Dare to touch it and ill belt you".
zx8401ztv i have a dril like that. we only have 120v here and if you get shocked by one lead you really only get 60v or so. i ussually just use a hand drill though.

It was one of the older ones that actually had the metal vacuum impeller vs. Plastic like the Heritage 2
The second one we had was the Heritage 2.
And truly if you use the handy Butler accessory probably the only power tool it could clean up after itself when the job is done ✔
just bought the same model today! great video! will be polishing mine tonight!
+Bobby Hamner cool! hope it works ok for ya
Hah your ponytail is ballin, sweet Kirb. I picked up a 1-CR and an Omega the other day and they have similar assembly, I'm currently going through them!
There are tons of attachments for the Kirby. Keep your eyes open they can be had for next to nothing at a yard sales and so on.
Thanks for the video, the Kirby looks GREAT, nice thrift store find.
Hi, good tutorial on taking the heritage apart.. i just picked up one at an estate sale. I can't get the zipper unstuck! I don't want to break it, what do you recommend? Also, do I have to take so much apart to put a new light bulb in?
Thanks.
Only thing the rug nozzle's belt lifter needs now is the top decal reading "HERITAGE II" (part no. 146384) but it will be hard to find.
I'm quite jealous of your vacuum, we have a Dyson but in my opinion nothing beats the classics!
Well if I ever find another for 20$ I'll prolly buy it and do a video about it, then see if my sub's want to buy it for like 40$.
Rinoa Super-Genius Sounds like a plan! maybe if I have some extra cash I'll try to buy one. :)
Very excellent video my friend. I lie the way the belt is put onto the shaft. Had instant idea for MY NICE EV. Many thanks. Will answer emails asap.
Oh I never thought about that, that would be an interesting drive system.
Rinoa Super-Genius
Theoreticly it should be reletivly easy to mae. Going to have a go at dreaming something up. I will eep you posted.
That stuff on the body is oxidation and white rust. You need something like Meguiar's rubbing compound to get that off.
Holy shit. You gotta preserve these things.
you do realize these things are everywhere and really easy to get right? this is literally what it was designed for
I see your 1986 Heritage II has the new-style carbon brush caps (107185) and black terminal wire (110985).
I’m intrigued by the design of the impeller. I have a couple of Kirby H2s and they are amazing in every way- unfortunately including their mass. But I would have thought the impeller design would have the veins reversed.
There are two things you seriously neglected. One, you didn’t change the metal fan, which are prone to cracks, and chips, nor did you reseal the fan case.
neglected? but it works.
We had a Kirby back in the 60s ...... It was sure a work-horse that lasted for ever ..... It was just so stinkin heavy ....... I went light one year and bought a $70 Dirt Devil that lasted one year ...... Every part was plastic including bearings ...
i use mother on my kirbys
Mother's mag polish is excellent for magnesium restoration
Mothers aluminum polish works well but takes some serious elbow grease
I'm going to pick up some of that aloo mineeum polish myself.
Kirbys are cool, I had a Heritage 2, but traded it for some tools, I have the Heritage 1 though, as well as a G7.
I know im late here but my father who was a body man for 30 years taught me how to wet sand, so what i did with my Classic Omega was sand with 3000 then move to 5000, then use mothers on it. Looks new now.
mothers?
Rinoa Super-Genius Yeah, Mother's Mag & Aluminum polish.
Scored a Heritage 2 with attachments for $120 on FB market place. Just threw out my 17 year old Dyson. How do I find out how old my machine is?
Next time try some stuff called Never Dull, You can find in in the automotive section at Wal-Mart. I use to use it on my aluminium frame in my old dirt bike and it made it look brand new and its easy to use.
I might do a video where I test different polishes like never dull. Thanks for telling me about that. I have several bits of aluminium I found in the woods that are really crusty. I could try it on them as an extreme test.
I must look quite silly vacuuming my immaculate house with my shined up Kirby, four of which I have.
My grandma has a kirby I forgot the model but it's coming up to 100 years old!
I own a 1989 KIRBY Legend 2 vacuum it do the job about the same as KIRBY Heritage 2 vacuum.
Lol its Kirby from the brave little toaster!
I was thinking the same thing, but I forgot they actually called him Kirby. I also have a 1955 sunbeam t20b toaster just like the brave little toaster.
Now all you need is radio, lamp, and blanket. Lol
Aron Hill
already got quite a few radios and lamps that could fit. i tend to snag any Luxo lamp i can find.
+Postash H I would look up a Kirby Dual sanitronic 80 for the kirby on the brave little toaster
So yeah I know a thing or two about Kirby's
is that all you've tried?
That was some stubborn metal not wanting to get clean :o
have you ever thought about doing an hour-long Rinoa Super-Genius special? :D I imagine it would be difficult to gather enough footage for one video like that though o-o but I would totally watch it
actually it would be easy to make an hour video. just not at the pace i would want. ussually my random bits are like 45 minutes of footage i cut down. this kirby video prolly has 2 hours of raw footage.
it would be difficult to find something interesting enough for one video other than a live stream. i'm a big fan of 15 minute videos. i want to make my own version of "the secret life of machines" someday and that might be 20 minutes or more. but those would require much more effort and scripting than my regular videos.
Rinoa Super-Genius Hooray For Tim Hunkin and the Secret Life of Machines!
Did the light still work?
idk if it has a switch or something, the filament was fine in the bulb but it didnt light up that i could see.
sorta off subject, but was that a IBM aptiva i saw? i have one the same as that.. is yours the AMD k6 or pentium 2?
i think this one was a p2. i love ibm products.
nice, i love ibm also. they are not so good now that lenovo own them.
smallenginedude71
Lenovo only bought think pad, lol only Google or Microsoft could afford IBM. But even they would break the bank. IBM is just too big to be bought out. Would be like buying coca cola or Pepsi.
Rinoa Super-Genius ah ok, thanks for the info!
Hi Super-Genius
Well I am also a big IBM/Lenovo fan,,boy :-) If anyone search IBM or Lenovo server here on TH-cam they will get a tons of my server videos.
Lenovo bought all of the x86 server stuff from IBM,, so IBM only has some Power systems and some high end storages and backup left.. I have no idea where they are going.
Do you still have this vacuum
Sure do. Works great
That Kirby she's a beauty
clean and lube the brush bar bearings, the motor bearings also seem a little tight, might have fine dust in them, id strip them down wash em out and relube them all
as i said, i've already wasted 3 days on this project. i'll save that for latter :P
Rinoa Super-Genius
ahh its not wasted, its a wel lbuilt machine, very expensive in the day, will be the only vaccum you ever buy
jusb1066
yeah i figure it will last a long time. but the thing is i use it so infrequently that it doesnt matter right now. i'll prolly do another video on general motor maintenance latter and show how to maintain the motors in several appliances. but as for now i'm a bit tired of it and gonna do something else for a bit :P
i hope my next video is vacuum cannon. gonna shoot a ping pong ball at 300+mph with my new vacuum pump.
Rinoa Super-Genius my parents bought one 20+ years ago for £1000, still works, never been stripped apart :P
Your room needs more than just a good vacuuming, my friend. Yikes.
It is called the brush roll
the heritage 2 kirby and legend 2 best ever made
so ? was it gold ?
Didn't test it yet, Ill need to get some good acid to dissolve it. I'll be making it a separate video. But I don't think its gold just because of the prevelance of crappy jewelry that is painted gold. Ya know like the stuff you get for 50 cents at a bulk vending machine. Not counting these links look to be made of flat metal. Usually when I see gold chains they are made from looped wire.
Rinoa Super-Genius
would the acid test work if it was gold plated ? i'm guessing not, unless it was worn or chipped of in places
so was it real gold
Idk I haven't made that video yet. I doubt it is though. Its prolly just cheep aluminium jewelry painted with gold paint.
Motor sounds a little weak maybe time to over haul the old girl! Love Kirbys!
Awesome! Can I send you my Tradition 2 and make a video :D
i dont really have space for another large vacuum cleaner, thanks though.
Smashing vaccume cleaner :-))
Please check the earth on that aluminium case, my dad got a good shock from an old aluminium electric drill, keep safe :-)
agree with the earth check, also check the length of the wire, as vacuum cables get a lot of damage, but this is sure the easiest one to replace, as for drills i bet it was an old style back and decket metal body one, they were deathtraps, rubber insulation inside that broke down ugh!
jusb1066
well the metal casing isnt connected to anything with power. thats why theres only 2 power leads and no ground. i'm not going to worry about it too much right now since this one seems ok without a ground. oh and the power cable looks great.
Rinoa Super-Genius
ahh i forget in the usa they allow two pin mains power cables!
jusb1066
Yes your spot on, it was a full aluminium body drill, it looked amazing but it went odd one day and my dad got 240vac up the arm, he jumped, really!!.
You need to fix the headligt
you are using that like a shop vac bro
I have a 1987 Kirby Heritage 2
It is called a brush roll
nice vids!
you put way too much polish on the wheel yust a !little! bit
Actually I've seen people put about that much in how-to videos on it.
you dont need a new bag just put that one in the washer it will be as good as new
LOL!
I would use windex
It is
Rug nozzle brush roll
I am, I guess, a little shocked by the filth and clutter. I guess I would be ashamec to film my filth like this, it takes away from the video.
thats your problem then, i have a super tiny house and its hard to fit everything inside it.
If you have more then one Kirby my I have the other?
I use windex
Those kirby’s really sucks! I have one and love the power but it’s a heavy sucker!
OMG, what a filthy hovel. Damn
Brasso is worthless. Blue Magic is great.
