Sound like what they did in the last Candyman movie. I like that kind of interpretation of these horror icons because it gives it some cultural weight as well as making them immortal without it being too much of a stretch. Not to mention, they become more relatable tragic figures, and the horror doesn't come from what they do so much as how the worst parts of humanity will not stop creating a new one. They're inevitable, not through their own power, but because of hate and cruelty.

Latin America has a lot of urban legends that could make for great movies. It's just that most of the time Hollywood focuses on Mexico. Nothing wrong with that either. Thank you for reviewing this movie, I did not know it even existed. I'm a Guatemalan living in the US because my parents fled the country due to the civil war and genocide that is the focus of this movie. It's impossible for my parents to stay awake through an entire movie, but they were enthralled with this film and they provided extra context that made the movie all the more interesting to watch.
Same with my mother. I’m Guatemalan and my mother was born at the height of the Genocide. She was born in 1979. The way this war affected my family is truly horrific. It also brought the worse in ppl, including the victims. My Grandfather drank heavily in an attempt to cope what happened to him and what he DID. My Grandmother had to step up & was constantly abused (idk why or what exactly happened with my grandma’s parents). All I know is that the war right before the 80s send a lot of indigenous communities spiraling & moving away/split. Did you know the military recruited the boys who lost their families? To help massacre other families? That was happened to my grandfather. He was an orphan at 14 & recruited. And if that wasn’t enough they realized they can profit off babies who lost their families too. Shipped them off who knows where. It’s “adoption” they say. Then explain where you GOT THE BABIES. There’s so much that’s happened it’s hard to give all the context. It’s near impossible. It was truly the darkest times. All because the U.S. wanted to continue owning the land for the sake of their profits
I love this movie a lot because like you said at the end with the "ghosts?" This movie does a good job of making it unclear whether or not the ghost are actually there, it's entirely possible that there is no supernatural element and instead this is just a family going insane due to the weight of the sins committed by The General. The general becoming paranoid as the sins of what he's done come to haunt him, meanwhile the family slowly go crazy at the realization of what's going on truly coming to grips with the monster that they live with and call father and husband. Eventually it all builds up they crack and they kill him because he's a monster and deserves to die. I remember seeing “the curse of La Llorona” with my friend, and no kidding, it was literally only, my friend and i, and two random dudes. There was literally no one else in the whole theatre.
This review made me subscribe to Shudder just to watch this movie and I was not disappointed. A devastatingly ghost story, gorgeous and terrible. The feeling I got watching was that the crowd of protesters were real, that the protest (with all the chanting, music, drums, candles, and pictures and names of the victims) helped to summon the spirits of the murdered. Even Llorona arrives at the mansion by appearing in the crowd first and then walking up to the door.
This movie made me uncomfortable in a good way. Angry in a good way. I know there must be others that feel the same. Genocide, the murdering of an entire people, the murdering of children, the unpunished sins of a brutal killer, they all upset me so much. And that is a *good* thing. Genocide should never be accepted. This movie is a good symbol to an awful thing.
hey mista gg, just wanna tell you how much we appreciate you continuing to pump out these quality vids despite the terrible state of youtube with demonetization and censorship. keep it up bro, we love you.
A friend of mine did her graduate work with the Ixil Maya and even did a museum exhibition on the genocides and trials for her master's thesis. I was really surprised to see these events become the subject of this kind of movie in a way that doesn't try to softball or excuse it. While I can understand complaints about a Mexican folktale being appropriated for a Guatemalan movie, the folktale has seen wide dissemination throughout Latin America and even into the American Southwest, and while pertinent details of the traditional myth were changed to slot into the film's narrative more smoothly, the themes of grief, anger, and revenge within the context of womanhood and motherhood are still relevant, as women and children suffered horrifically under the atrocities committed in Guatemala AND Mexico (this is actually a part of my graduate work as well).
La Llorona folklore isn't Mexican but from Indigenous cultures from Mesoamerica. It makes sense La Llorona myth is present in Guatemala since the indigenous people are the same as those of Southern Mexico natives.
The beginning of the movie felt like an extreme psychological movie with countless jumpscares rivaling The Exorcist was about to begin. I always watch Horror movies alone and in the dark but this time I watched it with lights turned on and in the Living Room..😂 I was a bit disappointed for not rivaling The Exorcist but I actually liked the fact they brought a real life politics with supernatural revenge. I wouldn't consider this movie as pure Horror but Drama/Thriller with some Supernatural.
This honestly is just a good movie I loved the cinematography and how they told the story since the story is La larona making the main cast women of all ages who ended up wronged by one man in various ways and he went through life apparently thinking he was a good person most people who have nightmares like the wife doing what he did...i love all the creepy parts if only there were more I'd love it even more but it definitely did La Llorona justice vs that other crappy movie
I wasn't even 3 minutes in, and I had to turn this video off and immediately watch this movie. The fact you said it's about people refusing to acknowledge their sins against others and how it's more based in reality (with the trial) and not just an urban legend had me ready to watch this movie. I'll watch the rest of the review afterward.
I knew I had seen Alma in another movie. She was also in Ixcanul, it made me cry like a baby and it's one of those movies that really leaves you thinking at the end.
I love seeing todos los chapines in the comment section. Growing up, I was the only one who was hispanic but not mexican for a good while. It wasn't a huge thing, but the other kids kept asking if I was sure which kinda hurt the pride, ngl. It was when I got older, I met Salvadoreños, Ecuadoreans, Puerto Ricans. I've only met one other person outside of family or family friends from Guatemala and they're one of my closest friends now. I fucking love my culture, but I'm glad movies like this exist to also show the ugly side that should never be forgotten.
2 yrs late for this, just watching film now. But noticed how maid's name translated to "soul" like she is the soul of her people..which is very tragic and beautiful. 10/10 for me for viewing.
I'm not really the type to seek out horror/thriller films usually. I also don't have a Shudder account. But i've gotten so many adverts for their shows, and ngl... If i had more money, i would subscribe in a HEARTBEAT. Their works look good and interesting, and there seem to be a lot of works from all over the world, highlighting different cultures. They seem to have a respect for (or at least want to represent) diversity and indigenous/diverse cultures as well as politics, and i'm just FASCINATED by their material. Again, horror doesn't interest me - but Shudder is making me more and more interested by the minute. Thank you for highlighting another of their works, nice to see someone did it right! This looks amazing!

I gotta say thank you for introducing me to this very interesting take on the whole La Llorona curse but with an interesting twist but having some elements of the myth; plus now this movie has now gotten nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film(not much I know, but kinda hoping this will get to the Oscars as well and that way you can say “Yo! I recommend an Oscar nominated/winning movie on my channel!!”) Plus really great publicity for Shudder as well; they have great original movies, series, and documentaries and an interesting array of awesome exclusives like “In Search of Darkness: An Depth look into 80’s Horror”; I stupidly didn’t contribute to the first film on their Kickstarter but as soon as they announced “In Search of Darkness 2” where it would include more classic 80’s horror films from cult classics, films from Italy, and even some more great movies in general including the horror/sci-fi/comedy/musical film adaptation of my favorite musical of all time “Little Shop of Horrors” I quickly jumped into the Kickstarter and got some sweet goodies such as three sweet posters, a nice Emmanuel pin, a physical blu-ray copy of the documentary, and the most awesome my name in the credits; and other great horror movies and even foreign ones too like “Train to Busan”, “A Tale of Two Sisters” and several more; plus Joe-Bob Briggs is on Shudder as well and he is always a treat to watch; recently did a show on a then unknown movie from the same director of “Mac and Me” called “Tammy and the T-Rex” and more specifically the “gore” version and just like “Mac and Me” it is so-bad, it’s hilarious even with the gore(some time, do check it out)

La Llorona is a Mexican legend, documented since the Aztec times by Fray Bernardino de Sahagún. Also La Llorona song is a Mexican Anthem. It is sad that Guatemala had to use the La Llorona to make a movie with plagiarism of the Mexican culture, and not taking the chance to make a movie 100% of their own.
@@reiluvi Ud. Miente con todos los dientes. Es 100% Mexicana. Well I just watched this film about two weeks back, and I wasn't really the biggest fan. I loved the idea for it, it was very unique, but the execution was sloppy in my opinion. Everything felt rushed to the climax, and even that climax that they were rushing to felt rushed, as well as the story itself suffering from a few plot holes and ignored side events occurring in the narrative. Honestly I feel this film could have benefited from a longer runtime (it was only 97 minutes) to maybe expand on what it was trying to say, even if by the end you understood that message. Don't get me wrong, this is a great film from a cinematographic and directing standpoint; it's beautifully shot, and the performances throughout are great, but where it really suffered was the execution of idea it presents, and the screenplay. I haven't seen the Michael Chaves directed, The Curse of La Llorona, but I'm willing to bet that this take on the Hispanic-American legend is vastly superior, as Hollywood seems hellbent on destroying resembling good cinema these days.
The story of the llorona has been around for centuries through all of Latin America. I had to Google The Black Bride and even now I'm not sure what that is.
Naomi V. Black bride is the "conjuring spirit" that was actually interesting in how they butchered llorona. Unlike most Americans I don’t mind reading subs and listening to the original language to the myth "pans labrynth" Train to Busan, the original Ring. Llorona should have and meant to have Spanish speaking and myth to it. Would have made it soooo much scarier. I read the dialogue and look up to see her face I’m shitting bricks.
genesis black bride was a spirit that had a back story unlike llorona who was butchered worse than Mexican culture throughout America. I hated that I know about llorona from living in Florida and it’s scarier than the movie that portrayed her as a "widow" "disheveled" white robed woman? No she was such a much scarier and better myth.

I always watch Horror movies alone and in the dark but this time I watched it with lights turned on and in the Living Room..😂
I was a bit disappointed for not rivaling The Exorcist but I actually liked the fact they brought a real life politics with supernatural revenge.
I wouldn't consider this movie as pure Horror but Drama/Thriller with some Supernatural.
Keep up the amazing work my guy! Also where’s the Fleshlight sponsor???
It’s always the second reminder to like that makes say “fine.” And like the video.
You think it’s a coincidence?
I'm having a hard time understanding what you just said
Bro I'm from Guatemala and didn't even know about this movie. I'll give it a watch and definitely will share it around my fellow chapines
I know you're a Mexican but your pronunciation of Llorona is so satisfying
“I guess that’s the wap the kids were talking about” killed me
I knew I had seen Alma in another movie.
TH-cam does this man dirty so I'm always legitimately happy to see him get sponsors.
Thought Raid Shadow Legends was calling you
"He's got my aim" lmao
2 yrs late for this, just watching film now. But noticed how maid's name translated to "soul" like she is the soul of her people..which is very tragic and beautiful. 10/10 for me for viewing.
MIsta GG is the only dude where i watch through the whole sponsorship ad because he actually makes them really entertaining.
Has "Raid: Shadow Legend" run its course, then?
Don't jynx it. Please 😂
@@BlueSusanVIII Sorry....I couldn't help myself. 🤷♀️
It’s an endless cycle of viral ad campaigns...... we will get Raid’ed back in a year or so.......sweet sweet ad heck!
I don't see what y'all have against the game. I mean, c'mon, it's a mobile game with, "console level graphics!" Wow! Imagine if consoles were still getting games with 8bit and 16bit level grapbics... oh wait.

He got me with the wink & sink lmao
I'm gonna be honest I didn't understand a thing going on, but I like hearing you explain stuff. Thanks man

Mista GG, the shoutout you gave me at the end of this video helped me reconnect with an old friend I haven't spoken to in years! You're bringing pals together, my man. Thank you. :D
This video motivated me to watch the movie, and Oh My God it was great. I left a great review because the movie deserves it. With small budget it managed not only to make use of it well, but it looked beautiful and expensive.
Usted no sabe nada.
i noticed rigoberta menchu in the background. she is an icon.
The first Llorna video is what drew me to this awesome channel. Glad to see it finally get its redemption.
either take math class or watch a mista GG video? Well algebra can wait
Coming full circle - I found and subbed GG because of his Curse of La Llorona review and here we are a little over a year later! Awesome to see how this channel has grown! :) Thanks GG!

3 seconds in and I feel like eating a mayo sandwich on white bread and calling it spicy. Its *la yaronya*
Flashbacks to eating mustard sandwiches as a kid when we had nothing else in the fridge. Good times 😅😂😂😭
i loved this movie so much and didn't hear about it til watching this video as soon as you said to go watch it i made a shudder account and watched it, came back to see the review
i don't think the crowd was a figment of their imagination or ghost i really do think they were there, as the movie progresses more and more stop chanting, i think similar to how the workers left knowing what was about to happen the crowd soon started releasing the end was near (maybe they saw the missing people start showing up and staring at the home)
also the ending was amazing how it went from no one hearing the cries to everyone hearing the screams it even had me praying throughout the scene, as a avid horror fan this has never happened before this movie was amazing to cheap jumpscares or misleading music. it felt like i was watching someone else tell me this story it didnt feel like a film it felt like a horror story being told to me on a rainy night.
Always a good day when GG uploads a video. I thought of you and The La Llorona review of the first. Then I saw the Shudder Original La Llorona watched it because the reviews were good, so I watched it and was far superior than the first one.
La Llorona is a legendary Mexican leyend of Aztec origin, Guatemala just burglarized Mexican culture. Also, the song is a legendary song of Oaxaca Mexico.
I was expecting raid shadow legends on the phone...
Your channel is growing so fast, imma legit head to patreon Mista gg because I’m just so impressed with how much your channel has grown ❤️❤️❤️ Always loved when I came across your videos, but now I’m all subbed up and ‘officially’ a fan :-) Keep it up buddy lol Love from Australia x
Thank you for a movie review I've been binging all your old videos
Llorona is just The Black Bride with maracas (and she doesn’t even scream in Spanish).
😐
The story of the llorona has been around for centuries through all of Latin America. I had to Google The Black Bride and even now I'm not sure what that is.
what the hell is even the black bride lmao
Always love your channel you deserve better on youtube
The premise seems like the backstory of the main antagonist of Hitman's Bodyguard
1:28 I've already watched that War Robots plug 3 times at the time of writing us just because of the "that last line was their's" line. War Robots.
The next sequel is called "The Curse of La Carona".
