She picks up new skills so quickly because she's already started from scratch at so many other things she just knows how to approach learning any new skill at all by now. It's kinda neat to see. But I wonder what activities she's actually stuck with over the years.

    Wow, hearing Michelle talk about feeling excluded for not playing games was weirdly humbling. She's become such a huge inspiration for me over the course of watching challenge accepted and MK Ultra, and I've found her intimidating in an abstract, "popular girl" kind of way. To know that someone like her still has weird little things she's intimidated and embarrassed by is comforting.

    • @oceanicmage
      @oceanicmage ปีที่แล้ว +1

      how can gaming be considered a "weird little thing" holy hurk?

    • @dakaodo
      @dakaodo ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@oceanicmage Wesley's not calling gaming the "weird little thing". Grammatically, yes that's what they wrote, but their intent is referring to the behavior of being intimidated by gaming as the weird and little/minor thing. The barriers to access gaming seem so easy and common that it was unexpected to see this intimidate or embarrass someone who had given Wesley the impression of otherwise being an all-around competent and popular person.
      Doors are another example of being neither weird nor little. Most people are familiar and comfortable with walking through them every day. But in colloquial English, if you meet a person who is hesitant to enter any door in their house, and they have to spend a second to mentally brace themselves before stepping through, you might say that walking through doors seems like a "weird little thing" to be intimidated by. (But then you find out their siblings have a habit of blindly crashing through, causing injuries on various occasions including a broken nose. And then it makes sense in their specific case, as a form of operant conditioning unique to their circumstances.)

    As a life long gamer, musician, and IT guy - the feelings you expressed around the 13 minute mark of feeling out of place or not belonging, are what I feel for anything active / athletic. While I'm making more an effort to be active than I used to - it's definitely my happy place or area of expertise. I am as much of a beginner (or noob to borrow gaming vocabulary) as you are to gaming. But as long we try, that's what matters.
    The key is for folks to be accepting of beginners, which I think your channel promotes constantly! :)

But know a lot of us in the gaming community genuinely love when others stubble onto what we love! Like I love gaming but I love seeing someone else I generally enjoy being with spend time with me gaming. Like there hasn't really been a joy in my life as a gamer quite like getting my girlfriend to fall in love with minecraft or animal crossing. Like we have something to do together that we both love! That's the most impressive part, tbh. I've been playing twitch games my entire life, starting in the early 1980s. Hand-eye coordination and dexterity is built into me from a lifetime of games. I've seen non-gamers pick up games and get destroyed by stuff I can do in my sleep.
      It takes time to hone these skills and she does it in six weeks.
      That is INSANE. I've been impressed by her challenges before, but this time she's stepping into my territory. Somewhere I know how much dedication it takes. This is a genuine feat. I am so impressed!

    This is remarkably enlightening to me as somebody who grew up around videogames. I didn't think I would be learning anything new through this, but you have completely opened my mind to the idea of the philosophy and language of gaming, that some people don't have this built up muscle memory and how that can be an incredibly embarrassing thing that stems from experiences with friends and I don't think anybody wants to feel like they may be a downer and make others fun diminish. Seeing how you confront the differences in skill and what sort of difficulties you had to mentally spar with. Thank you, Michelle. I truly appreciate you bringing this awareness to the mental aspect of improving, and love that you have the insight to compare these troubles to the struggles you have had in other challenges. I didn’t really understand why gaming was so difficult to get into at first
    I never thought really about how instinctual it all really is - already knowing how to move, how to jump, how to be dodging, where your health is, how to approach enemies (usually), hotbar organization, game sense, how to watch corners, how to push up, peaking, even strategies like jiggle peaking, things as simple as how to scope, etc.
    It’s all just instinctual which key binds to try when you play something. You just know when to scope vs hip fire in different games, in games where guns aren’t present how to approach an enemy / specific approaching strategies are just something you get used to. Think about how instinctively people try to jump on an enemy or attack an enemy in a specific way just off of thought.
    Watching the video it definitely did surprise me just how much of a skill / knowledge difference there was between gamers and non gamers almost purely off of just experience. The idea of somebody not knowing to press space to jump in a game is something foreign to me, but to people who rarely ever play games they wouldn’t know yet that it’s a typical keybind.

    Hey Michelle - I know this is years later, but when you are talking about your childhood and video games and your experience, I was the exact same way before any "training". I literally would just not play any games aside from ones of chance because I was embarrassed and unfortunately, the people I tried to learn with would make fun of me. Finally, I ended up dating a gamer and someone who is incredibly patient and kind, and now I play games as much as he does (though still very different styles of games) and we really enjoy playing them together! If anyone else is in this boat, and wants a game to improve with, "It Takes Two" was honestly THE BEST. It taught me SO much, as well as gave me the ability to continually fail in the same area and re-try, vs. having to restart from the beginning. Loving this video, and hope you enjoy playing some games now! It's such a fun and creative outlet!

    That was epic! You're totally right about gaming being like having to train in a new body. Even when you know exactly what you need to do, it can be insanely difficult when you don't have the muscle-memory and trained reflexes that take years to develop. They can't be forced, either. It's like being expected to draw or write perfectly with your non-dominant hand. I've been gaming since I can remember and I'm 27 now, so my arms/hands have grown used to constant pressure and I guess I learned how to naturally position my body in a way that's comfortable without straining. It wasn't until I was in my 20s when my parents decided to try some of the games I was playing that they complained about sore fingers, hands, and wrists after just one play session. It surprised me because both of my parents have working hands, especially my dad's that can take so much pressure and tension that'd probably cause my tendons or bones to snap. I'm just a scrawny twig. Maybe being an active climber as a kid probably helped build endurance in my arms/hands, but my level of fitness is currently minimal with studies being a priority. All this time since college, I noticed my muscles and body slowly deteriorate due to inactivity with shame, thinking that my bony hands could only do what anyone else could do, but perhaps they have an insane level of stamina I took for granted. I've taken on some extreme challenges like they were expectations when I probably should have recognized them for being unhealthy. Thank you for helping me realize that. While I am healthy in general and get my sleep unlike a lot of people I know, I'm not where I want to be fitness-wise, and I'm not trying to change my image. I just want to gain my muscle weight back and feel stronger because when you have strength, movement feels a little more effortless and even fun. I never want to get to the point where having to get up to fetch anything would feel like a chore unless I'm sick and it can't be helped. You're an inspiration for doing all these very-different challenges, and it's very motivating. You're afraid to step out of your comfort zone, but bravely do so anyways in controlled/responsible ways; no caution to the wind. It feels like you're doing this for the answers and adventure, not just for views. You know how rare it is for someone to be mature enough to do what you do? When you showed that you got a taste of the dark/toxic side of gaming, I felt that. Nearly made me tear up and want to hug you because it's a very relatable thing. Been on both sides myself, as the little kid who couldn't keep up as well as the skilled player being 'held back,' so hearing you talk about that brought back memories, both good and bad. I'm so glad you had good, supportive viewers at the time who totally get it. There are a lot of toxic, insensitive gamers out there who love seeing other people fail because of their own insecurities, and despite knowing that, it can still inflict emotional damage sometimes. If you still play games, I hope you have more fun than negative experiences, 'cause you're amazing at adapting to new challenges! I've never played Fortnite, but from what I could see as an experienced gamer, you had excellent people guiding you and you made it work! Very well done! I really enjoyed this video. Good luck on whatever you're going through now! ^-^

    Loved how yall featured Zelda!! One of my favourite games of all time. One thing I noticed from playing so many different titles is how easy it is to get confused by the difference in controls. For example playing two titles on the Nintendo Wii which uses motion controls sometimes causes me to mistake one game for the other.

      Yeah did it for 4 years. Only remember winning a race by a big lead ONCE. And that was in one of six event types: breaststroke. The 2-3 hour practices definitely sucked, but I'm thankful for them as now I experience little-to-none food allergies. Definitely a great low-impact sport that works out all muscles at once!

      Joshua Cheng how did that affect allergies?

    • @handlemonium
      @handlemonium 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alltimefalloutatthechemica2106 I had pretty bad Asthma, Eczema, and a ton of allergies growing up. Not only environment stuff like grass, pollen, and dust, but also primarily foods containing dairy, gluten, and nuts/shellfish to a lesser extent. It was a pain. I'd say 4 years of being in swim team 8-10 hours a week between middle school to sophomore year of high school reduced all of those symptoms by 65-80%. It still spikes some seasons, but now I can eat most foods and not have to carry around an inhaler as long as I keep up good self-care.

    I keep noticing that when you get something wrong you beat yourself up about it. Just looking at it from a psychological perspective, this discourages you because your brain would rather not try then to to fail. You have a fairly supportive community, and surround yourself with good people. I think you may find it helpful to give yourself some room to fail. Losing is fine, losing is learning! But when you get really angry at yourself it can make you want to stop. Persistence over perfection. I am a huge fan 😊 thank you

As long as you never give it all up, you will never be a failure...and that's why I love your videos. I love that you try again! That's super awesome and not very common! TL:DR
    Thanks for being yourself, overcoming anxiety, realizing you, Michelle, can really do anything you put your honest effort and will to it and overall really being relatable on a deep level to my own struggles with aspects or activities in life. I don't feel as alone as i did an hour ago !
    This is literally the second video i watch from you, just watched the Chess one and i really respected the fact you didn't quit after the competition, clearly did insane time between those 8+ months and did not leave on the Plateau period. By this second video i can tell you are an amazing content creator, the way you build your tale on a 30 mins video and your sheer will to do your best every time is inspiring, i even got emotional in some parts of both videos because i really and deeply relate to the emotions of doubting every moment of a journey and realizing the only thing is keeping me from surpassing my fearful and bad views of my capabilities is just having fun and believing on myself, every craft or activity has had this feeling on me in key aspects of them and seeing you do it just as i experienced is warming and for some reason i don't feel as alone as i did before them, thanks !
