- While Nikon's "standard" picture profile setting might be a little more contrasty than the Sony. And for those who gave heavily invested in Nikon fast glasses, like me, its a no brainer. But the kit lens are fantastic and the result you get from them are just mind blowing
I have the two best Nikon mid zooms, the 24-70 2.8G and E versions and the little kit lens 24-70 f/4 with the Z6 or Z7 is clearly better. Color, sharpness, lack of distortion and peak sharpness corner to corner wide open. Nothing like it on the market. The 35 1.8 S lens for $600 is reported to be the best 35mm period, corner to corner sharpness like no other. I have not tried the 50 1.8 S but is should be as good. The build quality difference makes it a no-brainer. Very solid little camera.
@@TheEverydayDad i do however think the A7III gets a slight point in fiddelyness, considering you have to "fiddle" with the settings on the Z6 to get a useful image
@@AugmentedGravity On Nikon use Neutral or if you want a very good low contrast (high dynamic range) but not as hard as log profile to grade, use the flat profile. There is one thing I did not see in this review between the two is the viewfinder. From every review I have seen it is the best or among the top while the A73 from everything I have read was not that good.
Question. When you say you like the image quality out of the Sony better, do you mean it’s sharper? If so, what do you think when the PRO S lenses arrive?
You have the option to shoot in log without an external recorder. So you get more dynamic range. Otherwise image quality is very similar. They use the same sensor. From what I know the Nikon allows you to use less noise reduction and sharpening though.
"You get use to it" is not something you want to say when you get into cameras that cost this much, there is no excuse to justify not having a flip out/up screen.
The only time in that entire video that I saw a issue with the Z6, was when you first went back in the studio, and moved back a bit. However, it was just a split second for the Z6 to re-aquire focus. If most of the stuff you're going to use the Z6 for is studio, talking head videos. I don't think the XQD or the lense selection should be a problem. However, if its going to be a camera thats taken out in the field often, used on vacation, and so on, then, the better choice would be the A7iii. Over-all, I really like the looks on the Z6. Quality video! I prefer the Z6 though.
Who really trusts a non-weather resistant camera for outdoor use? The consumer grade parts used and lack of any sealing make the a7 series risky. Weather related defects are not covered under warranty and Sony has a poor service network and notorious lack of spare parts make a 3 year old Sony disposible.
Nikon seems sharper. As for profiles I alway tweek mine . I can tell you Nikon will last in the rain, Sony will be going to the shop for a $800 repair bill
Heeeellppp! NZ6 4k footage is a lot more sharper than A7iii or is it my eyes? Autofocus is faster on A7iii. Colors are better on Z6. Which one has better slow mo? I need to choose between Z6 and A7iii Priority 4k cine video, slow mo, stabalization. Photos have got to be great too. Please somebody help!!!!
Here's another practical question: how do you get your videos from the camera to your editing software using the Nikon system? Seems like there's another cost involved. I have an extenal card reader, but not the kind Nikon uses...
Hey, thanks for another hands on video. Very informative, as usual. Why didn't you choose the Canon EOS R after seeming so happy about it and how easy it was to use straight out of the box???
Shouldve just left the Z6 settings as stock instead of changing it because you didnt like the way it looked. Kind’ve ruins the point of the video. Which is to compare them at base settings
The XQD is one of the many reasons Nikon Z6 is really desirable. They are MUCH more reliable than SD which were designed to be cheap consumer grade interface, hardware and performance. Everyone who has used them have had failures but the XQD was designed to overcome the many flaws in the SD. The buffer is small in the Z6 but with the write speed so high, you never run out, it clears so fast. The other 2major2 reason the Z6 is hard to beat is the Z mount that allows simpler lower cost lenses to be faster, lower distortion and with no fall off in sharpness at wider apertures. And the 3rd reason, it is pro build quality, unlike the a7 series that uses non-weather sealed construction and consumer grade components. Corner to corner the 24-70 f/4 S lens is the sharpest 24-70 on the market and only costs $600. It beats my 24-70 2.8 G and E versions for sharpness, color and absence of distortion. The 35mm f/1.8 is being called the best 35mm ever. By Feb 2019 there should be some fast primes and zooms. There are additional reasons, for example the excellent connectivity. Backup by Wi-Fi is fast and reliable, just works all the time. Nikon's earlier versions of its SnapBridge app was poor but with the Z6 and Z7, it is flawless, fast and reliable. Pros who want more distance can use the WT-7b wireless adaptor that has a 1gigabit/sec speed and 660 foot range.
Everyday Dad, I really think you need to evaluate the Nikon with a memory card rather than the recording into the Ninja. You're bypassing the internal video compression which may reduce the image quality seen by the average user..
learn to love the xqd cards. they are fast, reliable, yes they are expensive but they are built like a tank. I had several SD cards brake, like just split apart top and bottom. And about Nikon's ecosystem, dude, it's a brand new mount, but you can use more lenses with it with the adaptor than with any other brand. For video I've been using some old AIS prime lenses that are so beautiful and sharp and inexpensive, and I have some old mamiya manual lenses that use with an adapter mamiya to z mount with almost no brathing at all, and yes I usually shoot manual focus when shooting video.
I believe you have the crop claim on the A7III wrong. The Sony does do full frame sensor readout in 4k while down sampling a 6k image to 4k. Another thing to note, the dynamic range in the right picture profiles is much better on the A7III. Also, the focus on the nikon... well it still kinda sucks doesn't it?
Dpreview said the video AF was more reliable on the Z6 than the A73 plus the IBIS EVF rear screen build quality touch menu weather sealing are all better on the Z6.
@@chandan6119 only because it has the lenses at the moment - that will be reversed big time with the new mount at Nikon and Canon - look at it as tho we are in for pit stop and coming out with new tyres 😃😃😃😃😃

While the image out of the Nikon looks more pleasant at first... after awhile it gets tiresome. Nikon is applying a lot more contrast and saturation and when outside, you can see it crushes the highlights a lot - just have a look at your face when the sun gets on it. You are right about the crop factor at 30p, but if you change to 24p and 25p it doesn't happen. Ergonomically the Nikon seems way better (also bigger).
OMG Can we stop with the XQD card rant? It is better and does a high read/write. Do you realize that’s card is the reason why the buffer on the Nikon clears light years faster than the Sony? It is better period, SD cards a flimsy and cheaply made. With all that said, I love your videos good job 👏🏾
I mean I record online video so the buffer doesn't bother me. And I like the idea of XQD cards but they won't work across my other cameras. And thanks so much!
No that is not a bad thing if your just shooting. If you are going to color grade, just shoot in flat picture profile or in Nlog. Easy fix, what cannot be fixed is the Sony 1.2x crop in 4K or the shaky IBIS.
Bamboojled I don’t know what you mean by the ibis. The ibis is fantastic on the Sony. The crop is fixed with wider lenses or just zooming out. What really cant be fixed is losing all of your content due to a memory card failure on a professional shoot. Nikons “pro” camera is made into the equivalent of a canon rebel because they left so many things out.
@Eli You do realize that the Sony PRO video cameras use an XQD card? They also have 1 card slot!!!! So there goes your argument. As far as IBIS, all of the reviews that have tested the Sony IBIS against the the Z6’s, the Nikon wins. 1.2x crop is 1.2x crop, the Nikon does not suffer from this, what happens if you do not have a wider lens for the scene? Nikon wins!!!
Bamboojled huh I don’t know what you mean because the Sony fs5 has 2 card slots... how many does the Nikon have again? How many lenses are out for the Nikon?
The Sony has better highlight falloff and dynamic range. Curious thing is when you first reviewed the A7III and talked about the camera input flaps I thought I wasn't that bad but now that I have one is pretty annoying xD
Nice unbiased comparison. Both quality products and each have their perks. Let’s mention... your NASA shirt. What’s NASA preference for astronauts cameras? Nikon 😎
Hi, Thank you for the wonderful video ❤️ I'm looking to buy my first camera my budget ranges from 1- 1.5 lakh, Iam not a professional photographer, just a hobby Photographer I'm a person more on to photography mostly potraits, Pre wedding & sometimes wildlife, Video I do might shoot for particular occasion. After checking on video I found, Sony a7iii /Nikon Z6 considering that i want to buy a 50mm prime lens f 1.8 makes me go blank with respect to mirrorless as the price of lens is way to expensive Iam confused on which to buy as my 1st camera to get my skills up, where should i be investing money.
With the FTZ you'll have so many choices in great fast glass. Some AFS lenses can focus faster(Video) than the S lenses. However, they're louder. You will hear clicks in the in-camera mic. The old manual focus glass works great for video too and are cheaper than the AF versions. To me, Nikon did a pretty good job here. Although it should have has an SD slot as well. Faster 60p and uncropped 120 would have been nice. So If you need 60p or faster the IQ of the GH5s(with Speedbooster and same full-frame glass)still wins. Nikon's Z mount is the largest and most future-proof currently on the market.
Ken Konard do they focus well on video? This guy said that the F mount Lenses were not made for continuos auto focus video.... I have a lot of Nikon lenses too and planning on getting the z6, thanks
@@TheEverydayDad I have seen quite a few test and at least the recent (last 10-15 years) lens work very well in continous autofocus in video. Ony gripe is sound, they are not silent and would require external mike in general.
Days ago, everyone talked about the bad Sony AF ability... In this video, I saw a Nikon with some problems about AF... No one talk about that... My Sony A7III and Sony / Zeiss 24mm f/.1.8 is a perfect AF system... Is faster than my own eyes to focus!
I think all of the dslr & mirrorless camera’s being marketed to online content creators are seriously lucky that GoPro has not made a camera with interchangeable lenses :)
I like the overall sharpness, "pop" and the contrast of the Z6, A7III here in this video looks like an old T3i with a the old kit lens as against another taken with 50mm stopped down to f4.!
Man even with your adjustment that Nikon footage still crushes the blacks. My aching eyes. Outside of that the IQ is great. I'm sticking with my a7iii for now. Thanks for sharing.
I did get the Nikon, but the reason was better IBIS, better ergonomics, better touch screen, better build, better 4K (no crop at 4K 30fps), and 10bit 4.2.2. If you record on flat, or NLog,, the video is great and easily gradeable. Maybe it you that doesn’t want to admit it.

@@avarmadillo Yes, some great old lenses work great on the Z6 andZ7. The focus peaking works so well with the Z7 (and I assume the Z6 also) that my 50 1.2 AS MF is off the shelf and in my bag everything I go out to shoot. It is a joy to use some of those old film lenses with their silky smooth focus rings. Next 2 months should have the 58 f/0.95 S released. That one will likely be expensive but ...0.95!! The current 24-70 f/4 S is probably the sharpest zoom currently made and it is only $600. The first event I shoot I used Wi-Fi backup to a laptop at the mixing console and the speed and range was excellent. My only XQD might be the only one I ever buy, backups are so smooth using Wi-Fi. Hey I have a question I hope you could answer, I'm torn between the Canon m50 and the Panasonic G85. Which one would you choose if given the preference? I make fitness videos, and post on Instagram, maybe one day eventually start actually filmmaking. Thank you!
It depends, do you want awesome stabilization and 4K or you do want awesome autofocus and a bigger sensor? Both are great cameras but it depends on what you need. 👍
z6 will be better if we use it total manual i think, this red is good, but i'm not sure there is too much red is nikon (like a canon image, where magenta is problem in image ;)). I like sony image is less color punch but less overexposed spots :P great comparison :)
A little late to this party but I feel it's worth mentioning that a $200, 120GB XQD card is cheaper than a $695 Atomos Ninja V + $100, 500GB SSD. You can then lose the bulk on the Z6 because you don't need the Atomos on top. If it's about storage you spend literally the same GB per GB with XQD cards vs. the Atomos + SSD. SD cards are cheaper not really better though. The UHS-II SD cards are the same price as XQD cards GB for GB and perform slightly worse in comparison. Also, Sony owns the XQD format and their only competition on the market went out of business a year ago which gave them an excuse to double the price while not really improving performance or reliability... This is leaving Nikon out in the cold at the moment and I suspect they are really regretting adopting Sony's format when Sony themselves don't even use it in their own products.
Just got back from Japan. The Japanese all seem to love love love their Nikons. I would say that was the majority of what they all personally shoot. They are the most perfectionist nit picky people I know. So that might mean something. lol
The Nikon image looks over processed coming from the camera, over sharp and contrasty and the highlights look a bit blown and the Sony looks more flat and better to grade
autofocus on z6 sometimes loses face.. though a7iii is always on point.. also nikon's image look more saturated and sharpened.. sony's is more natural.. highlights in nikon are also blown out..
I cant believe I am saying this but the color is so much better on the Sony. I have see other reviews though, where the Z6 looked much better and not as contrasty, especially in n-log 10bit. Which is what I understand you recorded it on.
Battery, battery, battery!!!! I want comparison of battery life. Beside that I lke both cameras. I think they have circa the same quality but differend look. I personaly like more Sony because of its more film (movie) look footage. But I totaly understand people who would prefer footage look of Nikon :)
I am getting 1000 -1200 stills on a charge with Z7. I have 6 compatible batteries however due to all the pro Nikon DSLRs use a compatible battery. The main advantage of the new version is in-camera charging from USB.
Too much over sharpening on the Z6. This has always been the problem with Nikon video. If SOOC is what you're after the XT3 eterna profile easily outdelivers either of these cameras

Cant u start recording in priority modes with the a7iii? Yep confirmed. Just hit the record button when your in priority on the dial.
Thanks for the comparison man!
IMO, the colour rendition of your jacket is more accurate in Z6 than the A7 iii, just look at the different shades of oranges..
I prefer the Z6 image, i think it looks fantastic.
I think they both look good, I am surprised how much I like the z6 though 😍
@@TheEverydayDad i do however think the A7III gets a slight point in fiddelyness, considering you have to "fiddle" with the settings on the Z6 to get a useful image
@@AugmentedGravity On Nikon use Neutral or if you want a very good low contrast (high dynamic range) but not as hard as log profile to grade, use the flat profile. There is one thing I did not see in this review between the two is the viewfinder. From every review I have seen it is the best or among the top while the A73 from everything I have read was not that good.
@@TheEverydayDad same here, the Z6 footage looked almost 3D
At least that's what i have to pay to fix my Sony a7S II . a board both mics and some other thing all because it got a little rain
Is it true that the Z6 records 1080p (24 & 30) at 28mbps as opposed to Sony's 50mbps?
Heeeellppp!
NZ6 4k footage is a lot more sharper than A7iii or is it my eyes?
Autofocus is faster on A7iii.
Colors are better on Z6.
Which one has better slow mo?
I need to choose between Z6 and A7iii
Priority 4k cine video, slow mo, stabalization.
Photos have got to be great too.
Please somebody help!!!!
What did you choose?
Here's another practical question: how do you get your videos from the camera to your editing software using the Nikon system? Seems like there's another cost involved. I have an extenal card reader, but not the kind Nikon uses...
Hey, thanks for another hands on video. Very informative, as usual. Why didn't you choose the Canon EOS R after seeming so happy about it and how easy it was to use straight out of the box???
Notice how this dude too busy to answer questions? Sad
Thanks Gary that Nikon looks great I'm color blind and the color's just pop out at me. Thanks Again did you hurt your wrist at Spinup?
Unrelated question. Do you have a link to that lav mic wind jammer?
XQD card is a problem? Have used it for 2 years, it is a quality card worth every dollar (btw, honest and nice review, thanks).
Why did you sell your c200? Do you have a video on the decision that you can link to?
I believe you have the crop claim on the A7III wrong. The Sony does do full frame sensor readout in 4k while down sampling a 6k image to 4k. Another thing to note, the dynamic range in the right picture profiles is much better on the A7III. Also, the focus on the nikon... well it still kinda sucks doesn't it?
Dpreview said the video AF was more reliable on the Z6 than the A73 plus the IBIS EVF rear screen build quality touch menu weather sealing are all better on the Z6.
@@markshirley01 so a7iii is the dpreview camera of the year, not z6.
@@chandan6119 only because it has the lenses at the moment - that will be reversed big time with the new mount at Nikon and Canon - look at it as tho we are in for pit stop and coming out with new tyres 😃😃😃😃😃
@@markshirley01 not only lens,Nikon relies heavily on Sony for sensor and now even af is embedded in sensor. in couple of years sony and panasonic would have released 8k cameras. nikon doesn't even do log recording in camera, cant use peaking and zebra at the same time, bad pre amps, bad af tracking for photos, the lens roadmap doesn't have many important lenses at least till 2020,oversharpened 4k with bad dynamic range,no good adapters yet for Nikon to adapt cinema or other third party lenses etc. there is no reason for anyone to invest in Nikon for video, unless they currently in nikon eco sytem and have many f mount glass.
@@chandan6119 wait and watch - Sony's done for - Canon and Nikon will squeeze them.
What about the Canon EOS R?
I'm weirded out by the framerate used in this video. It looks non-24 fps shot at a higher shutter speed.
@@TheEverydayDad watching from Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 👍🏾
Nikon deeper richer colors right out of camera
GAproductions that is a bad thing if you plan on doing any color grading.
@Eli
You do realize that the Sony PRO video cameras use an XQD card?
Nikon 😎
The Apollo moon landing photos were capture on Hasselblad.
Hi,
Thank you for the wonderful video ❤️
I'm looking to buy my first camera my budget ranges from 1- 1.5 lakh,
Iam not a professional photographer, just a hobby Photographer
I'm a person more on to photography mostly potraits, Pre wedding & sometimes wildlife,
Video I do might shoot for particular occasion.
After checking on video I found,
Sony a7iii /Nikon Z6
considering that i want to buy a 50mm prime lens f 1.8 makes me go blank with respect to mirrorless as the price of lens is way to expensive
Iam confused on which to buy as my 1st camera to get my skills up, where should i be investing money.
Wich one did you choose?
It's easy if you are already in nikon then go for nikon or if you are into sony go for sony same for canon
A great way to compare cameras. I prefer the video on the Z6 but not by much. But I do have a sh__load of Nikkor lenses I can use.
Ken Konard do they focus well on video? This guy said that the F mount Lenses were not made for continuos auto focus video.... I have a lot of Nikon lenses too and planning on getting the z6, thanks
Why did you end up selling the C200? (From someone considering that camera)
It was just too big for me, awesome camera but I don’t want to lug something like that around all the time.
The Everyday Dad cool thanks for the info. Rented a C100 mk I. Really nice but even that was noticeably bigger than the mirrorless we have now.
Yeah the c200 is awesome across the board and I really liked it, but I need some at most the size of a full frame mirrorless.
The XQD card issue does suck . However , there are plenty of F Mount lenses that you can use adapted
Yeah that’s very true 😁👍
@@TheEverydayDad I have seen quite a few test and at least the recent (last 10-15 years) lens work very well in continous autofocus in video. Ony gripe is sound, they are not silent and would require external mike in general.
They can also be had quite cheap compared to Sony and many second hand also.
I think it looks fine with the contrast pulled down but the regular picture profile is so contrasty it’s pretty crazy.
Z6 looks better , glad I got it
Sony is better for it's purely better natural.
That's if you are not a movies.
@Akanbi
Just shoot flat or NLog and the Nikon wins again.
you just don't want to admit it, because you bought a Z6.
I liked both. The Nikon did surprise me, but overall it looked like it had artificial sharpening. Looks very digital if that makes sense
One thing I don't see you mentioned is the viewfinder. From every review I have seen it was either one of the best or reviewers were completely blown away. While the A73 was always considered not that good.
@@avarmadillo Glad to hear that from someone who owned both camera. I saw a lot of Nikon users saying how fantastic the peaking and VR were on older lens and that it gave those old lens another life.
In the future no cards will be used, but or the Nikon the future is here.
Sony A7 III all the way, nice video btw dad >_
I really like both 🤣
You hit the nail in your first few lines... the M50 is being used to create this video, so for MOST people the Z6 and the Sony are way overkill.
Well it was used in the spots where I mentioned it, there was a different camera used as the main one.
@@TheEverydayDad
Don't get me wrong... I love my A7III, but geez for 90% of everyday dads.... wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy over kill!
There are advantages and disadvantages on both sides. But if you start on a greenfield site, you get much more for your money with Nikon!
Just got back from Japan. The Japanese all seem to love love love their Nikons. I would say that was the majority of what they all personally shoot. They are the most perfectionist nit picky people I know. So that might mean something. lol
As always your video entertain my day..😁
How is the tennis game, Phil?
The Nikon image looks over processed coming from the camera, over sharp and contrasty and the highlights look a bit blown and the Sony looks more flat and better to grade
If you don’t like the look shoot flat picture profile or NLog, and then you not only get a flatter image but greater dynamic range. Problem solved.
autofocus on z6 sometimes loses face.. though a7iii is always on point.. also nikon's image look more saturated and sharpened.. sony's is more natural.. highlights in nikon are also blown out..
Wow thumbs up sir nice camera. i have action camera only... i wish i have dslr in chrismas😔
Z6 wins all the way, nikon Image Quality is great out of camera, at a7iii you look like Sick.
Please show us some evidence of that. Thanks.
I dont get why you dont talk about how bad the autofocus is in the z6
Nikon in UK are giving away A XQD card with the Z6 on most big sites like WEX

Now I typed that idk why this damn phone thinks it knows what I mean lol I’m sorry GARY lol 🙄 I guess I need to check before I hit done now

why does the bokeh with the sony look like donuts at 8:00
Nikon Z6 looks more saturated and sharpened.
I cant believe I am saying this but the color is so much better on the Sony. I have see other reviews though, where the Z6 looked much better and not as contrasty, especially in n-log 10bit. Which is what I understand you recorded it on.
I did not record this in nlog, this was in the standard picture profile until I realized how contrasty it is.
Just film in Nikon's flat profile - it's very good
@@markshirley01 For out of camera, I would recomend Neutral, flat is very good but might need a little post process in less contrast scenario.
The Nikon looks washed out and the Sony looks a little diffused. My impression is for the "hybrid prosumer" .. get the Sony with better glass.
, Nikon's image is more over sharpened image and over saturated, and less Dynamic range too.
The main advantage of the new version is in-camera charging from USB.
wow i am a nikon user but i find the sony colour looks better but nikon is shaper
Z6 records smartphone-style footage, skin smoothing, less details, punchy colour and contrasty, it looks cheap imo
Too much over sharpening on the Z6. This has always been the problem with Nikon video. If SOOC is what you're after the XT3 eterna profile easily outdelivers either of these cameras
@@avarmadillo it doesn't. check other reviews and footage comparisons. seriously not many people would buy Nikon for video,it definitely lacks the ecosystem for video.
Chandan, you are working so hard to make the A7III the winner, it’s almost sad.
The Nikon has better build, better EVF, better ergonomics, better touchscreen, better weather sealing, better user interface, 10 bit 4.2.2, no crop at 4K 30fps, and better IBIS.
