    your videos are amazing, i'm going to have to watch them in order and take notes! I picture the baffles being run all the way to the peak for ridge venting? keeps your roof cool.

    What kind of staples did you use to install the baffles?

    Did you also caulk over the doors and windows? The spray foam will seal the gap, but not necessarily the plywood to header gaps... if you're going to overkill, do it right!

    • @DanielWoodell
      @DanielWoodell  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is insulation in the door, i had one of the local garage door installer install the doors and the doors that i ordered have insulation in them also they have covers over the insulation for aesthetic reasons.

    The spray foam for around your wire and PEX should be fire rated red/orange foam.
    If you have a fire in a wall cavity the regular foam will not do anything.
    Spray some and then take a torch to it after it cures.

      Wayne Crews: Regarding Fire Rated Great stuff. According to This Old House contractor Tom Silva, the fire rated and the non-fire rated expanding foam is chemically the same, except for the color. They colorize the fire rated for fire and building inspectors. I think I heard the fire rated caulk might be a different chemical composition (other than just color), but I don't know. If I get bored, I suppose I could research the Safety Data Sheets and check with my son who is a degreed chemist.

      If it is the same it won’t make a difference which one you use so it doesn’t make sense to color it any different.
      There has to be a fire retardant added or it’s just a scam to charge more for the orange foam.

      I don't know since I'm not a chemist. I'm just passing on what I've heard. However, just to be certain, when I insulate my attic this year (2018) I will just fire rated caulk where applicable. As for scams...geesh, we are subject to those from every direction. Take Care. B

      He said the bright orange stuff is for when the inspector comes by he can easily identify where its used. I dont think its any difference either as in my area the great stuff seems to only come in the bright orange unless your are using special kind like bug retardant which is green or slow rise for windows and doors which is off white I believe.

      Regardless of any potential chemical differences, on another channel I recently watched, a guy did a few variations of exposing it to a propane torch (the fire rated was among them). None seemed much better or worse between trying incidental contact, exposure for 1/2/3 seconds, basically the results were after around 1 second of flame exposure they will propagate fire.
      Though just because something goes through the process to get a fire rating, does not mean it scores well, just now it is a known quantity. Which probably is something that many of government bodies that set local codes will want to require, plausibly with ways to mitigate risks, even if it is exactly the same as the cheaper non-rated can.

    Hello, question: how come you don't put noggins/nogging in between your wall studs to stop them bowing side to side? When is it necessary and when isn't it?

    • @DanielWoodell
      @DanielWoodell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could not tell you, if and when it’s necessary, I was not on the plans for my garage, and the plans got engineered, and permitted, I really don't see that too much in western Washington. If I had to guess I would say it has to do with firer code more than anything, but that's just a guess.

      Daniel Woodell thanks for the reply. The code/regulation over here in the U.K. may be different. Our houses, until recently are nearly all made of brick so it's good to check out how Americans do things as you are the experts at timber structures though codes/regs obvs don't entirely match up.
