Hi Toyota Maintenance, I have a 2008 Toyota Matrix that I bought earlier in 2003. This video is perfect! The engine style and engine bay setup is exactly the same. I opened the overflow tank and added coolant just like you said. Well Done. Thank you!!!

Its normal to the coolant to be on low mark when the car is cold. You shouldn't add more coolant my friend.

When I had my coolant changed at the Toyota dealership, they filled it to exactly where that one was in the video. Between low and Max

I accidentally overfilled my coolant on my 2005 Toyota Matrix! It filled all the way to the top. Is this an issue or do you think that the excess with expel on its own? I appreciate any advise anyone has to offer 🙏🏼

So is the “full” supposed to be full when the engine is hot or cold? I seem to have a trickle
Leak somewhere. About once a month I have to add to bring up up from low to about middle or full. Seems like the level is higher when hot.

could be a head gasket leak. This is when coolant leaks into your cylinder heads because there is a break between the coolant tunnels and the cylinder head. A way to tell is to take a look at the cylinders by taking out the spark plugs and looking inside. If it’s an older car, the cylinders will have carbon build up, which is normal. But if you have a head gasket leak in one or more of the cylinders then the cylinder head will be noticeably cleaner because the coolant basically steam cleans the cylinder head when it leaks inside. You most likely will need one of those snake cameras to properly see the cylinder heads.
Because you have a slower leak, it may be harder to detect, but that’s just one thing I thought of on where your coolant could be going.
You could also test for a head gasket leak by using a tester that you put onto the top of your coolant reservoir and it will basically check for exhaust pollution in your coolant reservoir which would also indicate a head gasket leak. This is the easiest way to tell.
Here is a link to a head gasket leak tester: www.ebay.com/itm/113602989273?epid=1391131595&hash=item1a73440cd9:g:hQYAAOSw3h1ZVJC4&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5338268427&customid=&toolid=20012&mkevt=1
There are also other ways to tell like white smoke coming out of your exhaust from the coolant burning, but since your have a slower leak I don’t think this will work. And the last way I can think of is checking your oil and if it seems frothy and somewhat foamy then that also means that coolant is getting into the oil which indicates a head gasket leak.
Hope this helps even though it’s somewhat late.

@@deltazip Thanks for the in-depth reply. Yeah I don’t know it’s got 245,000 miles on it so could be the head gasket is going. My bigger issue is an oil leak that I am 99% sure is the timing cover gasket. But I’ve pondered that it could be the head gasket but I really don’t think so. It looks like it’s the timing cover but it’s up high near the chain tensioner of all places. Which I already dealt with. Also probably at the bottom of the gasket now that I think about it. And the front seal. Lol. Anyhow….My oil isn’t frothy at all. I think it’s probably just a hose or something. I really need to inspect all the hose connections and maybe around the water pump. See if there’s any evidence of coolant leaking there. It really is a trickle of a leak. But honestly the radiator is never low at all when I check it. So I’m not real sure how the overflow tank figures into the actual level.

@@AmeriFanPicker Yea it could definitely be just a slow leak in a line. Head gasket leak would be the worst case scenario because, as you most likely know, that’s expensive to fix at an auto shop and a pain plus time consuming to fix on your own. But yea anyway, because it’s such a slow leak it’s not really a big deal at all. As long as it’s not eating through all your coolant because that could get expensive quick haha. If you can’t seem to find the leak I would still recommend using the tester I linked or something like it just to see if it could be a head gasket leak and if it is then you can decide what to do next after that.
As for the oil leak I’m not too experienced when it comes to that and I don’t know the whole situation so I can’t give much on that lol. Just a note though is that if your oil isn’t frothy that doesn’t mean you don’t have a gasket leak necessarily, it’s just another potential “symptom” I guess haha, but I’m sure you knew that already.
Whatever you decide to do good luck and I hope you find a solution to that oil leak and find out where that coolant is going lol

@@deltazip well the oil leak has been going on for a long time starting to get worse (it seemed like it got worse some months ago when I tried full synthetic…maybe detergents loosened something. I usually do a synth blend). Anyhow….it’s a pretty huge job. I wouldn’t pay a shop to do it. No way. Too expensive and I think I could do it better given as much as I’ve researched it etc. It’s just a bit above my skill level but I think I can do it. I just keep putting it off

the small hose inside the coolant is missing!! there are air in the coolant, you better find the owner and tell him to breed air out of the cooling system!
