Washing machine drum paddle lifter temporary fix

- In this video I make a temporary repair to a Hotpoint washing machine, where the paddle lifter has become detached from the drum. The new part was ordered weeks back, so the machine has done over 20 washes with no issues!

Temporary fix with tendency of becoming permanent solution, been there, done that😊
Yep, I’m just going to leave it, as it’s been ok for weeks 😂
Thanks for the comment 👍
Yep, love a permanent temporary fix 😂
Good creative thinking, a man after my own heart 👍
Thanks for the comment 👍
Great tip! Soldering iron on the cut ends makes them round and free from sharp ends.
Good tip 👍
I almost got the blowtorch out, but decided not to!
Thanks for the comment 👍
Just to make you aware that the usual cause of the drum paddles breaking like that is something getting in between the drum & the tub (coins or bra wires are the most common but other objects can do the same). Look through the holes where the drum paddle usually sits to make sure there are no foreign objects in the tub (maybe round the heater) & check the filter. Good temporary fix!
Thanks for the info. I did wonder why it broke off in the first place 👍

I use flush wire cutters for trimming cable ties, they leave no sharp edge at all. Side cutters and pliers use a semi-flush cutting blade which leaves that sharp edge behind. Cable ties are extremely useful for loads of tasks!
Yeah, they are really useful. I’m editing a video right now, just about cable ties 😉
Thanks for the comment 👍
Good morning. Nice repair job. Get yourself a cheap pair of flush side cutters and you won't need to file off the sharp ends. 👍🏻
I have a pair, but left them on site 😱
Thanks for the comment 👍
Oh cripes, I know that feeling.@@ultimatehandyman
Cool, I would have done just what you showed in the video. Great tip btw. As for the sharp edge's left behing with the use of side cutters, Try using some flush cutters or a big pair of nail clippers. I have used in the past myself and yield great results.
Thanks, I do have a pair of flush cutting pliers, but they were on site!
Thanks for the comment 👍
Nice idea. Instead of filing cable tie ends, could a lighter have been used to melt ends and then press down smooth with wet finger?
Yeah, you can just melt the end- no need to touch it 👍

I had this problem a few years ago. I would have needed to split the drum to do the repair properly. I just used plastic corner brackets with small stainless steel screws. I've went through too many washing machines in my time. The next one will be a Miele.
Well done

Always interesting to watch, thanks for the great videos!
Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
Bloody good idea mate!

For some reason our last machine (Hotpoint) was always destroying the paddles. I seemed to be replacing one every few weeks. I wish I'd thought of the cable tie fix because it would probably have been a more permanent solution than keep replacing them. Strangely, our current model (Indesit) doesn't seem to suffer from the same problem, even after years of use.
Perhaps it’s a common fault with Hotpoint machines. I must say that I’ve been fixing my own washing machines since I was a teenager, but have never seen a paddle lifter break off before. I wonder if it something to do with modern detergents attacking the plastic 🤔
Thanks for the comment 👍
Nice bodge, saved for the future 😁😱
Nice quick fix, could you show us the install of new part?
No, sorry.
I’m just going to leave it like this. It has been like this for 6 weeks now 👍
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman holymoly part never arrived? I have exactly same problem and just left it out completely. Washing powder will get the ties if you do a lot of 90 degree washes eventually but great stop gap measure.
When you receive the replacement, could you do a video on how to install it please? I have one, but the sharp bits get in the way, and I haven't been able to solve the issue.
I’m afraid I’m just going to leave it like this.
It’s been fine for 6 weeks 😉
Thanks for the comment 👍
👍👍👍Brilliant idea. Thank you
You’re welcome 😊

Strangely the missing paddle lifter would make an interesting rhythm beat that the Youth would appreciate
😂
Good idea for temporary fix 👍, I just countersunk a hole in 2 places on the paddle , then drilled through the drum, used quality gold screws making sure they didn't catch when turning the drum by hand , they dont rust , and my temporary repair upto now has lasted over 2 years and is used about 3 times a day at least 😂, I'm sure my wife is running a laundrette😂😂😂
Brilliant 👍
I think my girlfriend also has a part time launderette business, but unfortunately, I have to do my own washing 😂
Thanks for the comment 👍
Sweet!
👍
Very cool, I must get some large cable ties. I hope you asked your children to try and figure out a solution before you did that - continue their problem solving skills.
The large cable ties are really useful 😉
I didn’t think to ask the kids, but they tend to be more like their mother (never had a good idea in her life, but spends money for fun)
Thanks for the comment 👍
Nothing temporary about that, probably stronger than the original clips!
You are right. It’s been like this for over 6 weeks now!
I don’t know where the girlfriend ordered the new paddle from, but she might as well cancel it!

Man, these days even something like a paddle is a subject to cheap out these machines (which still cost as much as they do, despite being made almost entirely out of plastic). Like... my old Gorenje, which i've fixed up and kept running over the years. All i have to do to replace the paddles (which by the way, have never once broken in all these years)... is to unscrew a stainless screw and push the paddle back, where it would pop out. I've done it many, many times now to clean the drum properly. It's absolutely disgusting, because if you were to compare one of these machines with the old ones, they would NEVER cut mustard on the market back then even with the (useless, really) fancy "upgrades". There's literally no difference between a proper mechanical old machine and a new one (if you've kept it proper, of course). Best part? You can take an old machine, fix up its guts, and replace all the electronics and mechanical sensors with arduino or pi based systems and make it a fully custom machine that can do any kind of program you so desire. You can't do that with a modern one, or better said, it's not worth the time and effort, because in a few short years it's land waste.
Sorry for the rant, it's just disappointing to see how poorly made these things are. The temp fix you suggested is top notch.
I had not even heard of Gorenje before, I just did a search and it looks like they make a lot of appliances 👍
Yes, unfortunately things are not made to last these days. It is often cheaper to replace an appliance rather than repair it. I was always brought up to fix things, my last washing machine lasted over 20 years!

Nooice!!!!
👍
Great job. Now get that replacement part sent back for a refund!
It’s still not arrived. I’ve told the girlfriend to cancel it 👍
Thanks for the comment 👍
There is nothing cable ties or gaffa tape cant fix
It’s funny you should say that!
I’m making a video about cable ties, I started to film it a few weeks back and I said that exact line- word for word!!!
But then I thought I might be inviting the trolls, so I think I deleted that line 😂
