  • Lightning rods were invented in the 1700s by Benjamin Franklin. This invention still helps secure buildings today, given that lightning is 300 million volts and five times hotter than the surface of the sun. However, they are not as effective in protecting critical ground facilities such as airports, power plants and launch pads. For lightning rods to be effective, they must be at least a kilometer tall, which is equal to 300 coach buses stacked on top of each other. Sounds impractical, doesn't it? So scientists are looking for other ways to protect structures from lightnings. One of them is the use of powerful lasers that can deflect lightning. You can learn more about it in this video.
