Hi Marty. Great video man!!! AS a blind guitar player this lesson is very useful. So many guitar lessons on youtube say things like as you can see in the video you do so and so, or put your fingers in a certain way. I really like that you tell exactly which string and which finger you should use for the different patterns. I've always been a huge fan of doc watson. I can see how much fun you could have once a pattern that you teach in this video could be easily moved from chord to chord. I know I will have a lot of fun with this video and learning how to finger pick.

Gail Valente I found that you have to curve your index finger. Don’t keep it pointed, look up a video on how to properly hold the pick, cause I had the same issue for awhile til I noticed that I wasn’t holding the pick correctly. Best of luck!
Hi Gail. I'd recommend first not trying to strum with a pick. The reason why you say your strumming is "crap" is that you probably aren't pressing hard enough on the strings to get a good clear sound. Make the c Chord with your left hand and really press hard on the strings until your fingers are pressing against the fret board. Then with your wright thumb begin slowly to strum down from the fifth string. Make sure that each note sounds out good, loud, and clear. Keep practicing with other chords. I know you can do it. Good luck. Once you can play the cords with your fingers, then you can go back to using a pick. I don't play with a pick. However, I'd recommend making sure you have a good grip with the pick. Maybe a thumb pick would work better for you then straight picks.

I am a 79 year old left handed guitarist but never really attempted finger picking. I love what it can do to the songs I play. Your TH-cam video is what I needed. My goal is to finger pic one of my songs that I play. Thank you Rod
Thanks Marty! I am an old dog trying to learn a new trick. I picked up my first guitar at 50 and have been taking lessons weekly for 2+ years now. The fingerpicking I enjoy a lot. I realized though that I have a problem like many, which is that it is very difficult to pat your head and rub your stomach. I thought it was rhythm at first and realized it it is more about coordination. Fingerpicking exercises seem to help greatly. Thanks again!
Man! Thank you brother you’ve changed my life! I’m in recovery from addiction and you’ve helped me learn and connect with my guitar which is the same as yours and something shifted in my confidence and perspective of life. Thankyou for your gift!
I began guitar when i was a teen and was shown a picking style for the song.. "Daniel my brother".. and got it down pretty good then life came along.. and i never played for years and though i bought a guitar... I never progressed and actually forgot my fingering... I am now heading into sixty ..40 years later I'm back at it and got a few lesson from a professional and can play several songs to go with my singing.... long story short all the finger picking sites that I have viewed that say they are for beginners,,, are not for beginners ..however that being said I think your lesson is.. and quite do-able.. because you keep it simple and move slowly... you have inspired me to work towards picking rather than just strumming.. Great lesson!!
No shame in this, im doing the same thing and honestly ive been scared to try to learn this because i thought I'd be too hard or something but Marty really make it nice and easy (He makes me believe its possible lmao)
I have been following you for years and you are my go to guy. I am 62 year old Male in Maine and I am picking back up the guitar. Started in 1973. Mike
Thank you. Like you I've always relied on my pick and now at 73 years of age I'm learning travis picking. Running across this video helped me understand how to move the travis picking around. Currently I'm learning "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac and find I can do a great pick-finger picking version of it but it is helping me toward my bigger goal of learning travis picking.
I can't actually hold down the chord, cause I don't have calluses yet, and my fingers really hurt. But this is still an amazing way for me to practice, whilst only using my right hand. It's immensely enjoyable, thank you very much!
Hi Anna. Just keep practicing your chords. If it only hurts a little, kind of work through the pain and keep practicing. That's the only way of getting better. Once you can successfully play the chords, then you will really get good fast. Also, look at practicing as something fun, not a chore as something I have to do. When I pick up my guitar and begin to play it isn't long before I'm very relaxed and enjoying seeing what sounds I can get out of my instrument. Good luck.
Just play a little bit every day, even if it's only 5 minutes because your fingers hurt. In the beginning it's important to practice consistently without overdoing it.
You basically taught me everything I know. "Breaking it down," that's exactly right. That's when you stop telling yourself something is too hard, and just do it.
Thanks Marty... you really know how to teach and break everything down to knew beginners like me.. I am 50 years old and this is my new hobby you been helping me soo much . Keep up the great videos and teaching .. very helpful
Thanks, Marty! I'm a new player and this is my first lesson in fingerpicking. Your lessons always breakdown the material into small parts that enable me to start to play along. Yea! I'm learning!
I like how you don't talk to us like idiots. you are straight forward and explain everything in an understanding way. I'm a fast learner and enjoyed your channel for a few years now. taking time off the banjo and don't know how to hold a pick anymore lol
I am one many I am guessing who have played for a good long while, but never sat down and shedded fingerpicking the correct way, so that any fingerpicking I do is my own two to max, three finger picking patterns. Sometimes this is just fine, but once you want to progress to anything beyond that, I now got years of bad muscle memory in the way. This quarantine is dedicated to actually learning stuff from like....teachers. :) Thank you for all you do Marty. Anyone who gives a thumbs down to hours of work put in to a video that is giving free learning content away can simply cram that attitude sideways....

As always Marty, you haven't disappointed. Thanks for the lesson. After 30 years of Military service I have decided to learn the guitar. I appreciate you.
definitely one of the most helpful fingerstyle videos I've come across. keeping it simple and showing how the patterns integrated naturally with the chord change plus extra style points for the hammering. well done.
This helped me immensely as it coincided with me watching ‘Mark Knopfler on Guitars’ TH-cam and he said in the interview, when he explained this exact finger picking that you are demonstrating, ‘you’ve got to really want to play because your fingers don’t want do what their told’ Just practising this routine will get you there for sure.
I love how much fancier I feel automatically by knowing how to fingerpick even on a basic level. Can you make a tutorial for "Sleeping Alone" by Flatland Cavalry?
Hey Marty i'm now very proficient at finger picking with this technique thanks to this video, I've been working on it for the last couple months and it's really improved my play in so many ways. you're a legend for doing this video.... What i also did was i literally banned myself from using a pick for a week or so and it helped all the more.
This is so helpful I have my friends guitar and unfortunately he passed away and he could play this thing so well and now it's the only thing I have left asides from memories and these videos and everything help so much seeing as I can't really afford lessons
Hey Marty, I'm 70 have been playing since 1967 and have also been biting my nails for all my life. Recently I had all my teeth pulled out and have had my nails grow back so I guess it's time to finger pick. I've had all my nails polished so they are rock hard, time to begin.
Fyi, the proper technique for playing the high strings is to play the G string with the index finger, the B string with your middle finger, and the E string with your ring finger. You want to get in the habit of playing that high E string with your ring finger and not your middle finger. So when Marty tells you to play the E string with your middle finger you should actually be playing it with your ring finger. Other than that mistake the content in this video is quite good.
To simplify: E: thumb A: thumb D: thumb G: index B: middle e: ring Starting to learn too! There are different styles, it seems. Three-finger style, etc. look into it! Although many claim it’s bad practice for beginners to anchor their hand or neglect using a finger. Idk if it’s true but I’ll see if it helps me, taking that advice. Also, the pinky seems hardly to be used. Or so people have said
I really appreciate this video. I been not fingerpicking for most of 30+ years, though I started on bass where I played single line fingerstyle. This video quickly took me to the patterns I need to grind on, and we all know or should that genius is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration. Bravo for laying it out there- I wish I could share what I know so effectively and I hope viewers know what a gift this content is 👌🏾

Hi Marty, I am really enjoying your videos, just wish I had picked up the guitar when I was younger, I hit the big half century last year, and only have one pal who plays, but it's hard to get together with life commitments,I don't know if I am getting good, just wish I had like minded people to play along with in real life, the joys of tinnitus have made me very reclusive to humanity at times, but I persevere and I am happy to hear a tune slowly come together from my Chinese acoustic Fender, she has a lovely sound,I now have five guitars, one electric, one classical, and three acoustic guitars,I am planning to buy a really good semi acoustic, all my guitars were purchased second hand, and I cleaned and restrung them myself, all thanks to TH-cam videos lol,I am so glad I picked up the guitar,it has given me a new outlook on life, thanks again Marty .

5:17 reminded me of the game life is strange, my gosh. Simple little lessons like this create such amazing melodies just like that
Lilah Korkomaz What story lol
omg i loved that game!! ;(
brought back memories i forgot i had
JXSS Same lmfao- such a nice game man
OH MY GOD WAIT THATS WHAT IT REMINDED ME OF
Thanks Marty!
Quarantine got me learning how to finger pick😑 what am i doing to myself
That may or may not be why I am here as well...
No shame in this, im doing the same thing and honestly ive been scared to try to learn this because i thought I'd be too hard or something but Marty really make it nice and easy (He makes me believe its possible lmao)
Same here I’ve been picking for 2 and a half years and I decided to learn how to fingerpick before improving my picking speed to a shredder’s level
SAME HAAHAHAHAHAH
You're improving that's all.
I have been following you for years and you are my go to guy. I am 62 year old Male in Maine and I am picking back up the guitar. Started in 1973. Mike
Mind blown, I've been trying to wrap my head around this forever.
Good luck.
I was the same when I bought my first guitar(an acoustic), then I replaced it with an electric and my problem is gone 😅
ThermyX are electric strings lighter on the fingers?
@@asseeter electric guitars have a lower action, meaning that the strings are closer to the fretboard so you don't need to press down as hard
Redrum had me rolling Marty!!!
ha ha thanks Bob!
And you could hear those fingers picking ! Thanks Marty about time I learnt something without a pick .
Same here
Thanks Marty... you really know how to teach and break everything down to knew beginners like me.. I am 50 years old and this is my new hobby you been helping me soo much
I like watching someone learn and explain it. Sometimes it makes more sense that way
I am one many I am guessing who have played for a good long while, but never sat down and shedded fingerpicking the correct way, so that any fingerpicking I do is my own two to max, three finger picking patterns.
ARRRRRGGGGHHHH🤯 you make it look so easy, it is NOT!!! That’s why I hit that subscribe button you are a heck of a teacher same story as most on here my guitar been sitting n corner for 2 years I picked it up 3 days ago when I found ur channel and you’ve taught me more n three days than I’ve EVER been able to play👍👍thanks for putting ur vids on here you are helping a lot of people 👊keep it up you do a great job!!
Marty, your videos help so many people....more than you can imagine. Music is a universal language of Peace, Love, and Self Therapy. You are actually changing the world with your lessons. Very Powerful.
A Million Thanks.
John
As always Marty, you haven't disappointed. Thanks for the lesson. After 30 years of Military service I have decided to learn the guitar. I appreciate you.
from south africa and just started playing guitar. you have made it very easy and truly enjoy your lessons. I've learned so much. great work done.
definitely one of the most helpful fingerstyle videos I've come across. keeping it simple and showing how the patterns integrated naturally with the chord change plus extra style points for the hammering.
KANSAS DUST IN THE WIND!! One of my favourites gorgeous song I haven't practiced in years thanks to you I'm interested again 🎉
This is so helpful I have my friends guitar and unfortunately he passed away and he could play this thing so well and now it's the only thing I have left asides from memories and these videos and everything help so much seeing as I can't really afford lessons
Your playing in the beginning was so calming
Tatenda Dune top 3 strings (ead) play with thumb
Bottom 3 (gbe) play g with index b with middle and high e with ring finger

@@kozzzickozzzic7551 and youre Not.
To simplify:
E: thumb
A: thumb
D: thumb
G: index
B: middle
e: ring
Starting to learn too!

Person:*offers helpful, nice advice without being snotty at all*
You:R/IAmVerYSmARt
I really appreciate this video. I been not fingerpicking for most of 30+ years, though I started on bass where I played single line fingerstyle. This video quickly took me to the patterns I need to grind on, and we all know or should that genius is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration.
Bravo for laying it out there- I wish I could share what I know so effectively and I hope viewers know what a gift this content is 👌🏾
I suck please help
I'm trying Peter!!!
peter mullin haha
Mad Ashell if you suck, don’t, just keep going lol, this dude probs have a few years of experience, you gunna have to go through that same situation, you won’t hit the same in half the time, maybe the same time but unlikely to be less, just keeppppp fighting
Gunpla 4225 I’m actually feeling like this guy but I’m grateful that I have found such a motivating answer at such desperate moment lol
Thx ☺️
Everyone sucks at first. Just play every day, for years.
You're such a fantastic teacher, I never touched a guitar and you just changed my life
thanks man my girlfriend loves how I finger now, super helpful I’m subscribing
Umm dude take that out of context
😂😂
Bro 😂
And the lightbulb gos on....wow....love when that happens...I'm off to the races.... thanks so much
That was so good, I'm a 72 year old total beginner and all my life have wanted to play the guitar. I will spend some time on this video and hopefully If I do any good will join the course, thanks from the UK
Thanks Marty. I am just beginning to learn finger style, so I would like to see some simple
popular songs. I am using the Travis picking style which includes the ring finger. Thank you.
Dude I've been playing guitar for 20 years and have never been able to finger pick. Just 6 minutes into your video and its starting to make sense to me for the first time! Thank you!!
That middle finger lol!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed lol.
I'm guessing you mean 6:10
4:36 too
hahaha
Torin lol
The way you teach people how to use fingers for guitar playing is very efficient and much quicker to learn for my nephews. Thanks❤️🙏!
My brain understood it, but wouldn't relay the message to my fingers.... practice again in the morning...it might have sent the message by then 🤣
After almost two years of playing, fingerpicking started to make sense... this technique by using thumb and only two other fingers made it much easier for me to start. Thanks and I hope you do more videos on this topic
I just got into picking and this helped a lot!
Playing it is one thing. Singing with it is another. But like everything else, PRACTICE, practice, practice!
Thank you, Marty for another easy-to-grasp teaching! 😊
One month into Guitar… Hey my fingers hurt. It’s not that fun to practice
Teacher: guitar is all about fun. Just have fun
Three months into guitar: i’m having fun but not seeing much progress since the first month or so.
Teacher: no the guitar is about work. You’ve got to work hard and find a way to like pain !
🤔 trying to find a balance here
don't worry man the pain goes away
Honestly, I did give up for a while before finally picking the guitar back up again. It's been a few weeks and I've learnt 3 simple songs so far, penny royal tea by nirvana, about a girl by nirvana and fake plastic trees by radiohead. It honestly shocked me how fast I learnt how to play them, when I literally hadn't played guitar for a few months and never really learnt anything before that. You just gotta find a way to pull through it :)
the pain will go away if you keep practising! over time you will build up calluses on your fingers and it won't hurt nearly as much
I'm a left handed player just know learning how to play the guitar I'v almost got the chord of A down. I'm 17 and I would love to learn how to pick my guitar I think it sounds so gorgeous. Good luck to anyone doing this with him can't wait to finish learning how to strum and play other chords so I can do this. God bless yall. Thank you good sir for making this wonderful video.
14:57 woah what was that I need to learn that one
Loco Busters it sounds a little like Babe I’m Gonna Leave You by Led Zeppelin, not entirely sure though.
You are a beast! Keep going like this. And please do more RHCP lesson! 👍🔝🎸
thanks so much and always!
Hey Marty. I just want to say Thank you for making these vifeos. I am 16 years old and just got my first guirar. you have taught me all that I know about guitar. you are the best. X
Can you make a bar chord beginner video?
Thanks Gabe!
No sh** Marty. I think you're the best and your humor is hilarious. I'll never forget that comment you made about 110% of all AC/DC songs were 2 power chords. LOL!!! I've been learning for nearly a year. You make it super fun to learn and play! Thank you!
HOW DO YOU MAKE A GOOD SOUND WITH FINGER
Aww man.dont ask this question in public
Mat ali Mat ali
Dude, it's fine
Mat ali Mat ali HOLD BACK, DO NOT SAY IT 🤣
Use two
First lesson on finger picking I didn't just give up on. Presented very well!
The very first part of dat intro kinda of reminded me Landslide :D
I'm 40, just picked up a guitar for the first time (I don't play anything else either) and have started on Yousician plus these videos. I'm enjoying it so much it's hilarious, and this video makes me excited. Thanks man.
And by God do my fingertips hurt!
Thanks for flipping me off Marty....like multiple times...to the point where I wondered if you were being subliminal towards someone....maybe not me. LMFAOOOO
Marty, your videos have carried my guitar education since probably 2008. You have truly made a momentous change for this world. Thank you homes.
My fingers are begging me to stop
Oh dear Marty, its a great pleasure to see you after 9 years ... you've been and still very helpful ... Cheers mate
Skip to 3:10 if you want the lesson.
Bryan Dehart thank you SO much
I’ve been so stuck on how to progress further with guitar. Thankyou so much for assisting in motivation. I thought I’d never learn finger picking!!!
Marty is back!!!!!!!!
I am indeed Jax!
Why don’t you just get guitar lessons from bobby?🤔
I started with this video and came back to it several times. The BEST starter finger picking video out there. I’m a big fan and watching for years but new to finger picking.
4:36 don’t flip me off
Marty Schwartz, you are my favourite guitar teacher in the entire world. I have few others in my top 10, but you beat them all on one point: rhythm.
Do you have any videos on spanish guitar chords or anything?
marty man, I have been struggling with finger picking for the last year. One lesson with you here and I can play 100 times better already. Thank you
Just practice, practice,
Best guitar teacher on TH-cam! Period.
Can you do "Goodbye saigon - billy joel " ?
I'm just starting to play and this is a really cool way to practice your fingerpicking and cord transitions at the same time. Way better than just simple strumming.
How come barely anyone is talking about 4:34 😂
Maturity.
Yes tut tut
em anne06 because we’re not messed up like u 🖕🏾
Because clearly we dont have the mind of a 12 year old
Lmbooo, wow.
I'm amazed at how good this sounds. I'm a complete beginner and started just about a week ago. So far I've mainly been practicing switching between chords and "playing" a few three chord songs but it doesn't really sound like much. So holy fuck I am amazed at how good it sounded like at 5:15. I've only been practicing this for 30 minutes and I'm getting it! HOLY SHIT IT ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE MUSIC!
THANK YOU!
Pls help.... Ever first time holding a guitar n that too a classic one... My friend who himself is a well known musician here at this part of the earth introduced me to your channel... Need to start from scratch.. Basic chords and things u noe... So here I am with the first video... Hope u will school me right. Thanx in advance.
