Marty Music hello, I am learning how to play the guitar now for about a year. About 2 months ago, I learned some scale boxes and now I'm learning some beginner soloing techniques. Blows my mind to even think there was ever a point that I did struggle with that chord. So to anyone here that is brand new to guitar all I can say Is keep going and the struggle will become nothing but a silly memory of the past!
Haha, I used to struggle with the F chord. But with just a little effort and some pain I realized how easy it was to fit into my playing. I just made myself play more songs with it, and eventually problem solved
What's pretty awesome about this comment is that I started playing guitar and watching Marty at that time 15 years ago as well but I was 21 then and 36 now

Honestly Marty, been watching you for about 6 months now, and You are the only person u can find on you tube that explains things in a way the beginner- novice player can follow along. Youve helped me get so much better these last 6 months and for that kind sir, i appreciate you!!! Keep em coming brother!
Fantastic video Marty! I learned more in this 8 minute video of how the guitar and chords work than I have in years of trying to learn guitar. You really are the world's best guitar teacher.
You rule, man. I bought a guitar about 2 years ago and you have taught and helped me so much in learning to play. It is now one of my go to ways to de-stress and calm myself down. Thank you so much for all you do.
I don't think anyone can find a better guitar teacher in person or on TH-cam. It doesn't matter if you've never picked up a guitar before or if you've been playing for years... Marty just has a way of teaching that makes it easy and fun to learn guitar. Keep it up Marty!
Hey man, just wanted to sincerely thank you good Sir. I am a life long rythym player and Soul singer. Finally dipped my toes into learning lead three years ago after someone sent me a link to one of your lessons. You rock Marty! Thank you
Marty that whole concept has been something that has been driving me nuts. Always trying to understand how players move their fingers up and down the fretboard and are playing another cord. Thank you so much
My mind was just blown. My brother is about12 years head of me in guitar playing. I see him play little chords like that high up that match my simple chords I know how to play.....now I know what he's doing!!!!!!!!! This channel rocks. Subscriiiiiiibed.
Lightbulb popped in my head.. now I see why barre chords are so useful. The thing about you is that you just explain WHAT IT IS. You don’t throw us off with words like “mode, progression, key, triad” you just show us what it is directly, short and sweet. Thank you Marty. A dose of you and a bunch of books have made me understand theory in 10 months, which passed by fast as hell. Thank you.
Thanks!!! I am a self taught acoustic guitarist. I play rhythm by finger picking and strumming without a pick. I seem to learn things a bit backwards (just learning to play with a pick). So, since I learned to play my first song from you, and many since then, (thank you, by the way,), I thought "if I'm going to try and learn more about playing, scales, theory, etc... I should learn them from you." Thank you for being straight to the point, going slow and explaining what you're doing without over explaining!!! You're the best!!! \m/
wow. now I know what my son was thinking about when he just looked into space while learning guitar. He was figuring out the shapes and patterns. I am a few months in @ age 57.5. This is the perfect compliment; now in an hour long session, I will split time between learning or practicing a song and learning this kind of basic theory. A nod to you Marty.
I started playing in 1990. And in the last 4 yrs of watching you marty and others. My basic theory has exploded. Now I had to do the work, playing 2 to 5 hrs a day.( I'm handicapped, accident at work) so I had the time. But it's these you tube gurus who have helped. Back in 1996 I would've had to take lessons in another city so I was left in the small open chord room. With no chance to escape. Now thanks to Marty and all his contemporaries. I can hear a song and usually pick out the key, then with my circle find the progression. So, thanks Marty
Down with the flu today, no interest in picking up my guitar, but still wanted to learn something new. This video did that for me. Thanks a lot. Love the channel. Keep it up!
One thing I also discovered recently when I was teaching a student barre chords is that if you take an E string rooted barre chord and just move your index finger to the B string, you get an open chord style that you can play to make it easier for people who can't play barred stuff. And if it's an A string rooted chord then you move your barred index finger to the high e string. So I discovered this because my student asked me why she can't play the F chord with his three fingers on the higher strings and I told her she could then I was messing around and discovered that.
I’ve always seen theses vids and never spent more that 30 seconds cuz all I wanna do is play. Now that I’m learning theory I’m struggling from what everyone is telling me than Marty explains it and now it all makes sense. Like it’s crazy how this is free bless Marty and the supporters
I can see why you wish you knew this as a beginner, this will help me a great deal. I’m about 4 months into learning and your videos are very helpful. I am getting small break throughs every day just from an hour or so each day. Thanks Marty.
That’s officially (for me) your greatest video! I’m a self-taught player these last 15 years and this is exactly what I needed to help wrap my brain better around the fretboard as a whole.
I just found out how much I really enjoy playing with this old cheap electric guitar and been teaching myself from a book and just having fun and I ran into 1 of your videos and u are an amazing person and I just wanted to thank you. Hope you see this . Your too cool
Something I just learned after all of these years that relates here - each major chord is only 3 notes (1-3-5 of the scale) and you can combine those 3 notes anywhere on the fret board. I came from the pentatonic minor scale but never really learned the major scale or backing theory, so that has really helped me out - might help out some other intermediate learners out there.
@@formidability5631 thanks for the tips! I started learning purple haze and it’s such a fun one to play! I will put stairway to heaven next on my list :)
As a noob I’ve been getting bits and pieces of full step, half step, this is the same as that, etc... but nobody has explained this better than you just did. I learned as much in 8 minutes just now as I have in the last month. Thank you so much.
My old man did too, only I couldn't understand it at the time. That was twenty or more years ago. I can play chords and chord progressions and plenty of licks and riffs, but then life happened and I got super into skateboarding. Now in 38, still skating, but I just bought a Les Paul and and a blues jr and re-learning. I wish I payed more attention on theory instead of punk rock noise as I only want to play blues and sabbath now, lol.
@@harrysachs2274 hey, do you use your blue jr. in the house? I live in a townhouse and I’m trying to purchase an amp that sounds great even when turned down a decent amount, and I heard tube amps lose their magic when turned down bc the tube coils don’t get to heat up as much or something. Do you have any recommendations on what I should get?
@@Milr._jpg well i live in a regular house but i don't think it's that loud. I have my master volume and volume both set at 7ish. I use my guitar volume knobs for the actual volume of the amp. It would probably be perfect for your situation. You can crank the volume to break up and lower the master and use pedals and it'll still sound good. A good rule of thumb is that a tube amp will always sound better.
I am 35, I started playing guitar when I was 12. My parents saw I was scary good at the violin and had all my music memorized for most concerts. So they got me a guitar knowing I was a huge fan of the guitar having ZZTOP as one of my favorite bands. I absolutely wish I had this kind of a lesson right away. You are showing how to manipulate theory in ways the master's do, not simply going, oh memorize all this and that. Very smart lesson giving great examples putting Jimmy Page in there was brilliant.
Absolutely...abbsooofknlootli..lol!! What was just said.. I too am older now not going to say my age haha but yeah Marty is a great teacher I love his style I love his taste in music and the man knows his stuff point blank. Long Live Marty😣🤪
I'm about ten months in, been such a fun journey so far, Ive been playing barre chords for about 4 months now which is ice. I don't really have a practice schedule though, I just pick up and play whatever I feel like which I plan on changing in the new year. Much love Marty
I'm 54, been playing for 6 mos. now, I was discovering this concept yesterday and today you clarified it for me. I really want to say thank you for the past half year because you are my main man (teacher). I've learned a lot from you and I have progressed, all due mainly to you, so much appreciated Marty. 👍
Man TH-cam has totally changed my life when it comes to guitar. I remember struggling for days trying to get tabs down. I'm a visual learner and this channel has helped tremendously. Also playing with others really helps if you can.
Thanks to the tuner that came with my acoustic, I recently realized this, pretty cool! And yes, 51yo SLOWLY learning from the beginning. Love your channel. A guy I worked with, Pat turned me on to you. Thank you for all the videos man!!!
Woah thanks Marty, I've been teaching myself, and this has blown my mind, I'm learning pentatonic shapes now, rather than just following tabs, still having trouble memorizing so much, but this really helps.
I bought my first guitar a few days ago and your videos have been so digestible and simple for me to understand. My friend said I've already made a month's worth of progress just by going through your videos!!! You da man
Marty you are a wizard...I'm 62 and just learnt this...God I wish we had TH-cam and you when I was a spotty teen guitar wanna be...oh well never too late...thanks M-man!.
Easily the most useful guitar lesson I've ever had! since watching this I now have been able to find most notes and play the entire neck of the guitar. Thanks Marty
E, Em, E7, A, Am, A7, D, Dm, D7 all work well when moving up the neck. But, C and G are difficult for me to slide up using the CAGED approach. I have seen some instructors talk about playing chord fragments instead of trying to have a 4 finger 4 fret stretch to play a C or G up the neck. Like the bottom 4 strings of a G shape work for a "G shape" chord (treble E is the root) and the A, D, and G strings work for a C7 shaped chord that you can slide around with root on the A string.
Thanks Marty, excellent. My buddy showed me that in 1978, I started playing in 1977, if I may add in the musical alphabet, there are no flats or sharps between B&C, and E&F. Thanks again excellent demo.
Couple more thoughts: first, thank you for showing us the D minor and how it transposes up to E minor, etc. It sounds stupid, but I wondered if it worked that way for minor and other chords like if you move up from an E to the F major, for example. Also, it may be a great series of videos to put out called "what I wished I learned in my first year of guitar" like this one. Thoroughly enjoyed this and solved a major question for me. Thanks, and sorry for the multiple comments.
Mind blown ....LOL, thanks man, I am 58 been playing around with guitar since 13, this made so much sense. Glad to say I've turned my 17 yr old son and his friends onto you. They dig it ! You're doing good things.
Great video man! These concepts lead to less efforts needed to be put in while playing a guitar, you can group different voicings of chords and get them all together in one place and play an entire songs with minimal travel between the frets. Sadly i got to know this information around 4 years into my guitar playing.
Thanks man I am only about 15 years old and this is my first year of playing guitar and I think I just made it to the next level with guitar because of you thanks so much.
Love this especially when you talk about barre chords. Instead of having to google a bar chord, I now understand how to make barre chords. Excellent, sir. TY.
I've learned many Songs to play from you. So my opinion is, that your kind to teach and explain is very actual. I play Guitar since 4 years. ( i started with 50 years). Most of the Songs i try to play is from your lessons. So i hope you continue this for long time. 🤘🤘🤘🤘 Dirk ( sorry for my english. I'm from Germany.),Dirk
Thank you so much for this lesson Marty. I’ve always thought music theory would be way too difficult for me. But you have a way of explaining things that makes it fun and interesting and thought provoking. I live in rural Florida but hope to meet you some day and thank you in person. Rock On Brother
Simply amazing Marty! It's all starting to make sense now! This has to be the most simple, straight to the point, easy to understand explanation on theory that I've seen!
Hey Marty, YOU ROCK, and I dont mean just on the Guitar. I started playing at age 6, stopped at 20, then picked it up again at age 51, after a bad Dirt Bike crash, sold the Dirt Bike and bought a Guitar ! I am about to turn 60, have taken over 1.5 years of private lessons one-on-one. have taken classes in song writing, and have written 15 original songs, and cover about another 30 songs. Take it from the younger end of the baby boomers, MUSIC is for LIFE, LEARN, Know how to GROW experience, that keeps you young, lets me be old, and never quit learning. More than anything else, I plug into TH-cam to learn the craft, either for break downs of major hit cover songs, or for original/popular artist videos to learn and play. I have done hundreds of open Mics, some bar gigs, some retirement home gigs, some winery gigs, and some house concerts. And bar none, you are the best online TH-cam teacher I have found ! And as I write this, 3/22/2020 the world has changed (COVID-19), but music has not, and is even more therapeutic to the players, and the listeners then ever before. But, as I am in California, and am under Shelter-in-Place, have realized that this is a great time for STUDIO time, not much chances for open playing. And today just found your Marty's UnCaged, this morning, and that I can enroll in your "virtual" Private Lessons, (ALL OF THEM) for the same price I was use to paying for a single lesson from my one-on-one teacher. I am signing up this morning, and asking you all to KEEP it SAFE, and more than anything else KEEP IT GOING TJ
@5:40 Pretending the guitar is the barre for Emaj chord was a lightbulb moment for me. I just started learning over a year ago and watch many of your videos!
Just a terrific teacher of basic guitar theory. And he breaks it down to make it as simple as possible to understand....and he makes it FUN!!! Marty is truly the best.
Marty music I am learning to play and you are the only teacher I watch. Things are broken down for slow folks like me. I have watched other people trying to teach and they just don't connect with me. Thank you for what you do and for slowly revealing new techniques at a learnable rate.
The most mind blowing learning experience of my life. I know this isn’t your original theory but you introduced it through my “one day I will play this song.” Thank You (and I’ll learn that one too!)🙏
you must be unique as a listener as Beefheart turned me against the avant guard for its chaos. not the cool tensin between resolve, just unresolved chaos that to me is at first frusrating then evolves to pure four letter barage. its cool that you can enjoy something so truely eccentric.
I am just discovering all that Marty covered in this video, and it is absolutely amazing how it opens up the entire neck for play. I found that there are certain chord shapes that are just naturally easier for me to form, and this theory allows me a lot more versatility to play with buddies. Like everything, it just takes a lot of practice, but so worth it.
Try to sing along to easier songs, I recommend Learning to fly by Tom Petty since there are only 4 chords repeating, so you can just learn them and then try to sing along :) If you are aiming higher, try searching chords with lyrics and there are chord names above the words on lyrics - so you know when (at which word) you want to do the change :) Bad Moon Rising by CCR is also a good song to sing along since the words just click together with chords - highly reccomend that :) Hope it'll help :)
Dana Al ameri Try starting by only playing the chord changes when you sing, once your comfortable with that you can move on to simple strum patterns and then to more complicated stuff.
"I wish I knew what I know now, when I was younger. I wish I knew what I know now, when I was stronger." If those words have meaning to you now, you have officially reached old age

I totally agree. Bad days for me are some of the best days to grab my beater and just turn the world off and hit some chords for a while. Therapy...
Same, I play hotel california, back in black, my girl and many more that I like on my guitar it really calms me down when I'm stressed out
I don't think anyone can find a better guitar teacher in person or on TH-cam. It doesn't matter if you've never picked up a guitar before or if you've been playing for years... Marty just has a way of teaching that makes it easy and fun to learn guitar. Keep it up Marty!
Songman_sam Jorge Aguilera haha
Marty is the man who knows what he's been missing
Many, many men can't see the open chord ....
He's made me wonder how much there is to know ... about guitar theory.
😂 Hey Marty...you got the theory I need. Maybe...more than enough.
Sorry. Couldn’t help it.

Holy shit I've been playing piano 20 yrs and just picked up guitar for fun and this never occurred to me. My world has been remade
Thank you.
Congrats on the article about yourself in Taylor Guitars Wood and Steel. You're moving on up to the big time!
Hey thanks so much Pat!
Ooh, I missed this. Good for Marty!!
Actually shit myself when you played the G and A chord on the second fret, 6 years into guitar and i cant believe i looked over this
Might want to check out the CAGED system if you don't know it already!
What other things cause you to poo your pants?
Wow, I’m a beginner and this literally just blew my mind. Makes so much more sense now!!
if you play electric learn purple haze by Jimi Hendrix. it taught me alot and made me feel more comfortable playing

As a noob I’ve been getting bits and pieces of full step, half step, this is the same as that, etc... but nobody has explained this better than you just did. I learned as much in 8 minutes just now as I have in the last month. Thank you so much.
My father actually told me exactly this on the first day I started playing the guitar
lucky man hope you still enjoy learning new things , been playing years now and still learning
@@harrysachs2274 thanks so much! We’re there any other tube amps you considered before buying yours?

Lightbulb moment! Lots of parts of the guitar playing jigsaw puzzle just fell into place. Thanks Marty.
Easily the most useful guitar lesson I've ever had! since watching this I now have been able to find most notes and play the entire neck of the guitar. Thanks Marty
This was a great piece of knowledge man.....my mind just exploded

Great video man! These concepts lead to less efforts needed to be put in while playing a guitar, you can group different voicings of chords and get them all together in one place and play an entire songs with minimal travel between the frets. Sadly i got to know this information around 4 years into my guitar playing.
Can you do a srv blues lick lesson?
Marty, when did you start playing guitar and what are the most useful things you’ve found to really take you to your next levels of learning?
Thanks man I am only about 15 years old and this is my first year of playing guitar and I think I just made it to the next level with guitar because of you thanks so much.

I am signing up this morning, and asking you all to KEEP it SAFE, and more than anything else KEEP IT GOING

Some people aren't all terrified about COVID 19. But yes, music is a big therapy for the ones emotionally affected by this pandemic.

I know this isn’t your original theory but you introduced it through my “one day I will play this song.” Thank You (and I’ll learn that one too!)🙏
OMG you literally blew my mind!(no sarcasm(really)
Captain beefheart- sure nuff n yes i do lesson would be amazing. Need some more Captain on this channel brother!!
you must be unique as a listener as Beefheart turned me against the avant guard for its chaos. not the cool tensin between resolve, just unresolved chaos that to me is at first frusrating then evolves to pure four letter barage. its cool that you can enjoy something so truely eccentric.
This is one of the clearest explanations of CAGED that I've seen - suddenly it all makes sense. Light bulb moment. Thanks!
I love this guy , so talented and so kind but most of all , he’s a great teacher too
You just inspired me to get my guitar outta the closest
Do you have any advice on how to strum and sing in the same time
Try printing out the lyrics with chords. Make sure the chord is right above the word that you are singing when it goes to that chord.
Dana Al ameri Try starting by only playing the chord changes when you sing, once your comfortable with that you can move on to simple strum patterns and then to more complicated stuff.
autocrow thank you
FingerFighter I will thx
