@Nash Thaddeus Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out now. Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I’m a nominal strummer and I want to learn to pick. This was my first lesson on picking and it is easier than I expected. Thank you for making this available.
Being a retired 64 yr old, I am forced to live on a fixed income. I recently moved from Southern Califonia to a small town in Tn to reduce living expences. I love the move and intend to stay here, even if finances were to change. I just want to tell you that even though I havent subscribed untill now, I watch your channel frequently and find a lot of help here for my renewed guitar playing. I am unable to spend money on anything except for necessities so I really appreciate all that you provide on your channel. I hope things go well for you and (selfishly), look forward to cotinued content that you provide. Thank you for all that you do for us, your viewers. Steven
Hi Steven....I'm same age and retired on fixed income as well. Playing my old guitar usually makes me feel better than I deserve! It's great to have a channel like this to provide help and encouragement to old pickers like us....I'm subscribing today!!!
I've been a casual guitar player for years, and recently have decided to step up and be more serious about my fingerpicking. This was honestly an excellent video for me to get a clear start on my road ahead. Other videos with tips and techniques were nothing compared to this very basic, simple, yet powerful practice lesson. Thank you!
Thank you so much, Austin. To get the PDF with all the tabs, go to the finger, picking video in this course that I have created for you: www.yourguitarsage.com/30
I really dont understand the human race... why are some people so freakin negative? I call it rude! Did y'all not have parents that taught kindness and love, or at least basic manners? Here is a guy offering free demonstrations on video, not to mention his 30 lessons and his books for free. THAT MEANS IT COST US NOTHING. Even if everything he showed was completely incorrect...who cares. We have lost nothing. The lessons are pretty great and I dont see anything at all to critique in a negative way. I tried to learn the guitar about five different times in the past 30 years. I have went to one on one lessons, group lessons and a dozen on line teachers and by far and Erich is by far the BEST I have seen and/or used. From the very beginning the things he teaches before you even pick up the guitar really lit a fire in me and for the first time made me WANT TO Learn. In only my fourth day, 60 minutes a day I can play 4 chords...which is further than I ever progressed in that short a time. I cant wait to see where I am 0ne year from now, only investing 60 minutes a day. Thats all the time I can guarantee each day. So to all you Negative Neds and Debbie Downers and JPAH's. Get a hobby, or a job or a life. (jpah- just plain ass hats) Erich I thank you i can tell you definately love the guitar and would really like it if everyone on the planet could play the guitar. I THANK YOU
So kind of you Jesse! Thank you so much. There are two types of people in this world. Those with winner attitudes and those with loser attitudes. And depending on the attitude, it will determine one’s results.
6,3,2,1,2,3 . 6,3,2,1,2,3 Got it. Thanks going to try this, and will resist the chords ( haha for now). This is best demo/explanation I’ve seen on TH-cam. Most seem to instruct as if everyone already knows how to pick. Appreciate the video.👍.
Your e-book is fantastic. Thorough and accessible! I already play guitar (and teach music) so I appreciate all the work you put into writing it. I was looking for a refresher on finger picking. So glad I found your resource! Thank you!
Erich, Thank You for another great lesson. You've simplified nearly every concept of guitar playing that I've ever wanted to accomplish. From struggling through the "F'n" F chord" to learning musical scales, you simplify it all; and suddenly, it all starts to make sense! I REALLY benefited from your lesson on the Rule of Thirds in this same way. Wow. Something that I struggled with for weeks with a lesson book I was working from, became so crystal clear with just one of your sit down lessons. I can't imagine finding a better teacher either online or in person. You're teaching is in a style that really speaks to me and unravels the mystery of guitar. By the way, I HAVE finally mastered the F chord! Can you imagine how exciting that was for me!? I had to show anyone who stopped by, that I can cleanly play the F chord! Next stop: fingerpicking. Thank you, thank you!
You're a good teacher, I enjoyed doing that in the video, I'm just a beginner, I bought my guitar 5 days ago, and I don't know anything about it at all for now, but I'm willing to learn everything about guitar. You're a great teacher, really clear. You break it down to the most simple of instructions which is exactly what's needed. I played the guitar 20 years ago and in 2 minutes you showed me some bad habits that I had. If only there had been youtube 20 years ago! Thanks and keep teaching!
One of the best presentations on starting fingerpicking that I have seen. Straightforward, understandable and very useful. Thank you for breaking it down into a technique that can you can begin to practice immediately, well done.
Thank you for the lessons. I started playing guitar when I was 14, didn't take it too seriously. Since I couldn't afford lessons back then and there was no TH-cam in the 80s I was pretty limited on what I could learn. I've played off and on since, but I've also put it down for years at a time. Just within the last year or so I've decided to dedicate myself to becoming a better player and learning more about guitar and music theory in general. I must say TH-cam is a great tool for that. Thanks again, you've helped a 46 year old man begin to learn to fingerpick!
Many years ago, I made up and created my own fingerpicking, so I never learned the "right" way, and it limited my playing enjoyment. In five minutes, you have changed my playing, and taught me a new way to create muscle memory! Thank you! (And, I agree with your spay/neuter philosophy, as well!) You have provided some great lessons.

If I were to win, would really love to be taking the rest of your lessons. As it would change my life more than it already has. As for the guitar, well I live in Australia, and have purchased an acoustic guitar already, so I would ask that you donate it to a deserving less fortunate person, in the hopes that taking up the guitar would change their life as well. Keep up the great vids an mentoring!

Nothing is bad if I play guitar in my whole life as long as I could feed myself though

Thank you for this lesson. I know how to play the guitar but I only know 1 finger picking technique which my mother taught me when I was 14 (10 years ago). So far, I found this video to be the most helpful compared to the other finger picking lessons. You're a good teacher!

I'm 43 y.o. and I've never played guitar, don't even own a guitar yet. Been looking to see what approach or learning avenue I was going to take. You seem like a good one to use. I had a snare drum when I was in middle school, that's the only instrument I've played.
I just started playing guitar. I won't mention my age. However, I took a course at the local college and seeing that I liked it somewhat, just finished a course in basic music theory. You'll be surprised at how much theory pushes you past that "I'm stuck" level. It's coming along.
I've always had such a hard time getting the hang of finger picking, and now after watching this one video i immediately got the hang of it. This guy is like somekind of guru. Thanks man
Just starting to learn finger picking. I've been using a pick for yeatd. I found your video to be simple and informitive. Looking forward to learning and changing my playing style. Thank you for your help.
I had my first guitar 5 years ago it was birthday gift from my sister she got it for me bcuz i told her i want to learn how to play guitar especially finger picking, never played it not even had the passion to play bcuz i wasnt serious about it and i dont know how to play guitar either, never thought that I wil have one, but after watching your video make me bust out my guitar and start playing or more like practicing, thank you very much for sharing your guitar knowledge it really helps alot for beginners like myself. Hats off to you - good sir
Just taking a moment to say thank you for your time in sharing your gift to others. I'm a huge music lover in a very rural area with virtually no one to give advice or lessons. It's very frustrating to want too play guitar and try to do it online. But just wanted you to know that your simple approach is what is needed and I really appreciate your willingness to do that.
Great tutorial, mate. I'm embarrassed to say how many years I've been playing guitar and haven't taken the time to do some decent finger picking. I haven't been wearing a necktie either, which is probably where I've been going wrong! I've recently discovered the wonderful John Prine which has made me want to pick up the guitar again. Greetings from Scotland. 🏴
thumbs up, i have struggling a lot to get it right and in an easy way.... and now my prayers have been answered .... let me now begin practicing it right away
Thanks for watching this lesson my friends! Let me hear your feedback and any more topics you would like for me to shoot a video on. Keep up the practice. e :)
There are great guitarists, and then there are great guitar teachers. You my friend are a true teacher, your lessons are excellent and really help us enthusiasts. Have gone over several videos and Im staying for good and will go through more lessons.
That is so kind of you to take the time to say that. Thank you so much, my friend. If you like that, here is a course for you at no charge. Has a lot more fingerpicking exercises in it as well. www.yourguitarsage.com/30
Before I watched this video I used to do take after take after take in the studio and it's just my right hand technique that troubled me. I realised I never gave enough attention to work on that throughout the years. This helped me like ALOT!!!
Anytime my friend. I am really glad I watched it. You have amazing tutorials on TH-cam, but I visited your website and after years of playing guitar I realised how much more improvements I can make. Not only by playing guitar, but my career as a musician in general. You make things I almost gave up on, easy to learn and I just want to say thanks for sharing your time and knoweledge with guys that want to learn how to play guitar. I am definitely going to support your website and courses you offer, but even here on youtube, anyone (beginner/intermediate /advanced) can learn something from your free lessons and for that I admire you. Greetings from South Africa
Erich - I am a psychotherapist and a guitar player (it is a form of therapy for me). You have nailed it. Our culture does not teach the true dynamics of integrative learning. Instead we are trained in rote learning. Thus, learning music or a foreign language is discouraging for many because integrative learning or "calibrated" learning takes time and patience. But the real enemy in all of this is ourselves. The more pressure we place on ourselves through self-criticism, impatience, & shoulds, gotta's, oughta's, the quicker we will burn out at whatever the endeavor. I have taught myself to approach learning a piece with no expectations. Each section learned is a victory, no pressure, no unrealistic demands, just a challenge, "what part of this can I learn today?" The goal is to keep it interesting, challenging, and fun. I'll never be anything more than an intermediate player, not looking to be in a band. I just enjoy the learning challenge and the result of the effort. Folks need to learn to quit "shoulding on themselves", focus on the immediate challenge and enjoy the experience. I think you are the first TH-cam guitar teacher I have known to address this issue so head on and so accurately. The elephant in the room has been identified! By the way getting off the pot is not a bad idea if you want to learn guitar! Thanks for a great video. Rock on dude!
Thank you so much for your helpful video. I am a Army veteran with PTSD and guitar playing really helps me out a lot. I was curious if there were any lesson books available still?Anyhow thank you very much for you're helpful videos. -Mark
I'm not good at English language. I just want to thank you for your every guitar tutorials. may you still continue your passion in making a new one for us whom you inspire. God bless you Mr.
I loved this lesson and I love your course. Though I have been playing guitar for long, I haven`t been able to make much progress due to bad fundamentals. Starting your course from scratch is helping me fill the gaps I have in my playing. I encourage everybody to subscribe to your channel and purchase your course. If you are serious, that's what you gotta do. Thanks again Erich
the issue is Merle Travis style vs fingerpicking which are to different ways of playing picking patterns the former relying on a rolling base line and planting your pinky on the pickguard. This totally changes the guitar angle. Solution: do what Chet Atkins does and eliminate the pinky he said I rarely use my pinkey. What your goal should be is changing the angle for fingerstyle so ultimately you can play flamenco if you wish to do so one day.
No no no...Merle Travis played with thumb (bass) and index (melody) only, Chet Atkins used thumb (bass) and his index and middle finger (melody)...Jerry Reed played with thumb (bass) index, middle, ring, and sometimes pinky. Ain't no wrong way, just your way. If it works for you, it's right.
I have an old guitar book that had fingers strumming and I didn’t understand it at all but when I watched this video it made much more sense to me. Thank you!!!
In the finesse of the picking do we pick with tips of our fingies or do we need to grow our nails and pick using the back of our nails, or can we tape picks the top of our nails using epoxy ? Much thanks sempia you really have have thaught me many fundamental skills
I use the tips of my fingers cause my nails tend to get dirty really quick. It's your decision tho, but you'll need to shape your nails ( I believe) if you wanna use them.
Now here's what I really LOVE about this...my initial instinct was to lay the guitar flat to get a clear view of the strings but hought it wasn't the "done" thing.....soooo glad I found this:)
just want to add this comment. This guy has a udemy course with close to 30 hours of instructional guitar for only $15 cad. if you want a nicely formatted online course, i would highly recommend it. Hes a great teacher.
Hes Greay but if u wanna learn get yousician it's an app that got me in 10 months to the point to play almost anything now (not perfect yet but it's only been 10 months
Thanks for this lesson . I'll definitely be trying this technique. I've had a guitar since around 1995 and now I've 2 and still I'm beginner but this is the year I've decided I'm going to really learn to play this beautiful instrument, to move from a beginner to being at least a intermediate guitarist.💯👏👏👏👏🇬🇧🇯🇲
Thank you for providing actually help for free. A lot of channels now do it for money. But you have a lot of stuff for free or really cheap. So you deserve a subscription
This is how you teach plucking. I like the way you make people understand how to play fingerpicking. You understand that there is a psychology to every facet of learning. It what makes people learn faster, and efficiently. The rest position is what most finger picking teachers tend to forget. Basic but very important. And as to why - it has something to do about wiring your brain, setting your brain and muscles, because for the most part finger picking is muscle-memory. Second, that part where you lay the guitar (without touching the frets) is another important aspect of "wiring your brain" and "initializing your muscles" - again, basic but very very important. It's like bringing your brain closer to your muscles. Kudos! I subscribed!
thanks dude! other guitar videos i’ve watched act like i already know the basics of fingerpicking, i don’t!! you went through with THE basics, which really helped me understand. thank you!
I played guitar at a beginner-mid level 8 years ago but stopped. Coming back to it now to continue the growth and I love this video! Never been able to nail down clean picking because of bad habit hand positions. Excited to keep cleaning up my technique. Subscribed now!
I wanted to cry when he said be kind. I felt that. I will be kind to others. Thank you. I tested positive for Covid today so I decided to learn how to play guitar.
You are the BEST!!!! Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness and encouragement. As a new guitar player at 55 y.o., I have learned SO much from you in your 30 free lessons. Wolf River Cam Well, good luck, have fun, and remember you're never too old to learn an instrument!
BUY TWO GUITARS SO U CAN SLAM ONE ON THE FLOOR AND STOMP ON IT SOMETIMES LOL GOOD LUCK
I just started playing guitar. I won't mention my age. However, I took a course at the local college and seeing that I liked it somewhat, just finished a course in basic music theory. You'll be surprised at how much theory pushes you past that "I'm stuck" level. It's coming along.
Check out justinguitar's free beginner course too. Very helpful.
Marty music has helped me so much. This guy and him I think are the top
🤘🤘
Just taking a moment to say thank you for your time in sharing your gift to others. I'm a huge music lover in a very rural area with virtually no one to give advice or lessons. It's very frustrating to want too play guitar and try to do it online. But just wanted you to know that your simple approach is what is needed and I really appreciate your willingness to do that.
Love that! Thank you, Noah. These will help you a bunch: www.yourguitarsage.com/path
Thank you so much! I am a beginner in finger picking and this is a great start, I really need to practice this now.
Sir I am your new student from india joining as of today 51 year old Deb. You are a great human being and a fabulous teacher. God Bless.
Thank you, my friend! 🙏
Same!!! 55 years old and just now taking the time to learn. I’ll probably never wear a neck tie, though.
thumbs up, i have struggling a lot to get it right and in an easy way.... and now my prayers have been answered .... let me now begin practicing it right away

I came here because I am learning a song for Christmas! You know, Christmas is more enjoyable with a taste of classic movies. 😊
“Don’t trust the man” at the end was my favorite!!

Me too! Easy to understand. Thanks!
This just popped up for me, just rekindled my guilt practice and remembered I love your channel.
😜Thanks, friend.
your intro has more power than the entire us
Before I watched this video I used to do take after take after take in the studio and it's just my right hand technique that troubled me. I realised I never gave enough attention to work on that throughout the years. This helped me like ALOT!!!
Love that my friend! Thank you for letting me know.
Thank you shrinkdoc49 for your very kind comment. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. e
Thank you so much for your helpful video. I am a Army veteran with PTSD and guitar playing really helps me out a lot. I was curious if there were any lesson books available still?Anyhow thank you very much for you're helpful videos. -Mark

I've been struggle for days for what should be the proper pattern of picking playing guitar. More love to this video help me a lot. 💙
Thanks again Erich
as someone who is learning from a music book, this really helps thx you so much
Thank you so much! Appreciate your kind heart in sharing so many free tutorials:)
You are so welcome!😀🙏
I've been cheating for all these years by not using my ring finger. Unlearning is brutal.

the issue is Merle Travis style vs fingerpicking which are to different ways of playing picking patterns the former relying on a rolling base line and planting your pinky on the pickguard.
If it works for you, it's right.
saaaaame!!!feel like my ringfinger is so wek and hard to control in comparisonn to other figners lol..
I have an old guitar book that had fingers strumming and I didn’t understand it at all but when I watched this video it made much more sense to me. Thank you!!!
I love that, my friend! Here’s my gift to you, that will also assist: www.yourguitarsage.com/30
This sounds just like the intro to Metallica’s “Nothing else matters” Really cool 👍🏻
🤘
The closing comments made me hit like and subscribe. Advancing beginner here, looking forward to lessons. Thanks for what you do!
@@skyou5981 lmao same
Now here's what I really LOVE about this...my initial instinct was to lay the guitar flat to get a clear view of the strings but hought it wasn't the "done" thing.....soooo glad I found this:)
just want to add this comment. This guy has a udemy course with close to 30 hours of instructional guitar for only $15 cad. if you want a nicely formatted online course, i would highly recommend it. Hes a great teacher.
I agree. I bought several of his courses and they're top notch
Hes Greay but if u wanna learn get yousician it's an app that got me in 10 months to the point to play almost anything now (not perfect yet but it's only been 10 months

Whats a good way to keep from touching the other strings that I don't mean to hit with my picking fingers?
Thanks for this lesson . I'll definitely be trying this technique. I've had a guitar since around 1995 and now I've 2 and still I'm beginner but this is the year I've decided I'm going to really learn to play this beautiful instrument, to move from a beginner to being at least a intermediate guitarist.💯👏👏👏👏🇬🇧🇯🇲
Welcome, my friend. You will find a lot of helpful information here yourguitarsage.com/path.

This is the first time I feel like I might have a shot at learning how to properly pick the guitar. Haha! Thank you!
Thank you for providing actually help for free. A lot of channels now do it for money. But you have a lot of stuff for free or really cheap. So you deserve a subscription
Where do you rest your right hand (plucking hand)? Do you rest it on the bridge?
Thanks!

I hope to subscribe when I have available funds to further progress in my playing! I want to learn how to play "A baby just like you" by John Denver for my 7-month-old grandson who loves me to hold him and sing. When you strum on 6, 5, and 4 younare strumming down right? And for 3, 2, 1 you are strumming up?
