Counting Germany’s ‘Invisible’ Black Population For The First Time

  • When Nana Addison pitched a business to help black people in Germany find styling services tailored to their hair and skin type, she knew from personal experience there was a market, but couldn’t prove it. Since Germany hasn’t collected information on the ethnic or racial background of its residents since the end of World War II, she had no way of showing how big the potential customer base could be. The fallout was investors rejected her funding pitch in 2018, forcing her to take the long way and finance the startup herself.
“Data is the baseline of everything,” said Addison, who successfully launched the beauty fair CURL CON and is now using the profits toward her initial startup idea Styleindi. “Black people are one of the youngest and fastest growing segment of Germany’s population -- one should assume that this valuable consumer group is worth understanding.”
The government’s rationale has long been that after the Holocaust authorities should never again be able to identify communities at risk of persecution. While the intent may be well-meaning, the resulting lack of data has effectively allowed racism to be swept under the rug by making it nearly impossible to track.
Germany’s black population -- estimated at more than 1 million people -- is now seeking to emerge from the country’s statistical blindspots and help authorities identify systemic hurdles. The first wide-scale effort to survey the community is due to launch in June after being delayed by interruptions due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The online survey known as Afrozensus will ask people of African descent about topics including their employment situation, socioeconomic status and experiences with racism. It’s organized by a Berlin-based black community group to avoid concerns about the data being handled by the government, but is supported by Germany’s Anti-Discrimination Agency.
“The things you don’t count usually don’t count,” said Daniel Gyamerah, one of the leaders of Each One Teach One, the community group organizing the project. “When nothing is officially recorded, you end up with the international day of diversity, couscous in the cafeteria, and the ‘we embrace diversity’ slogans. But nothing really changes.”
The findings could carry implications for a broad range of issues. Economists are expecting inequality to widen as the pandemic-driven global slump exacerbates existing gaps, and data from other countries show that low-paid and minorities are hit hardest. Addressing structural inequalities and racism would also help Germany remain an attractive place for future immigrants as its existing population ages and exits the workforce.
The country’s racial makeup is more complex than what’s reflected in official statistics, which divides people into two categories: Germans and those with a migration background. Even that level of detail is relatively new, with the distinction arising in 2005 after an OECD study found that children of immigrants were disadvantaged compared with ethnic German peers.
The approach lumps together diverse communities, according to Joshua Kwesi Aikins, a political scientist at the University of Kassel and senior researcher at Citizens for Europe, a partner in the upcoming survey. A child of a Swedish parent is statistically the same as the offspring of first-generation Turkish migrants. The categorization also doesn’t account for the descendants of second- or third-generation immigrants.
“A very basic problem is the idea that people who experience racism in Germany are here as a result of migration,” Aikins said. “Sinti, Roma, and black communities in Germany are examples that go back many centuries, so they aren’t always affected by migration, but certainly experience racism.”
Protests in Minneapolis over the death of a handcuffed African American underscore the danger faced by marginalized communities even in countries where racism is more openly talked about.
Millions of Germans today are descendants of former “guest workers” from countries including Turkey, Vietnam and Angola. As the term implies, they were expected to help fuel the country’s economy and then go back home. Others have ancestors who came to Germany from its former colonies, such as Namibia, Cameroon and Tanzania.
A “serious lack” of data and an “incomplete understanding of history” obscure the magnitude of structural and institutional racism in Germany, according to a 2017 report from the United Nations.

"After the Holocaust, Germans thought authorities shouldn't be able to identify communities at risk of persecution" and that changed when and why? Why should it concern the government what my ethnical background is? That would just open a whole new big can of worms. The far right would love these statistics. There will surely turn out some "undesirable" ethnic group. It is "Germans" and "People with a migration background"(Afghans,Australians,Congolese,Eritreans,French,Italians,Luxembourgians,Syrians, etc.) for a reason, foreigners might not speak German at home and don't have an established social network in Germany, both being very important factors for life and education and both have to be concidered, i.e. when staffing schools or electing an Integrationsrat "Integration council".

@@gerardmeadows8418 Yeah thats the thing with structural rather interpersonal racism - you often have to look for it. When you do, you find all sorts of injustices. Just a small example: in the US, infant mortality is 4.67 per 1,000 births for white non-hispanic children but 10.97 for black non-hispanic children. Further research shows that this infant mortality gap can is reduced if attending doctors are themselves black. So with the right data we can see a problem, understand a problem, and suggest solutions e.g. more black doctors. In Germany, such problems cannot be addressed since they cannot be seen let alone understood.

I lived in Germany for a little over 2 years about 20 years ago. While I was there I met many different "Black" people in Germany. I met many Black Immigrants from Africa, but the majority of the Black people that I met were Native Germans who were mixed race, they usually had a Black Parent that either used to be in the Army and left years ago, or their parents were divorced. Many of them had never been to The US but knee that they had family here, some of them even showed me picture of their African American cousins, grandmas, etc. My point it while people may see just basic "Blackness" as the same, they arent the same, and when they do this census they should really make sure to separate by ETHNICITY too. Everyone Black in Germany isnt the same and arent connected to the country the same way. Afro Germans are an ethnicity all their own, not just a "Black" German citizen. If the government or other entities who are conducting the census dont stratify by ethnicity and only go black flat/general "Black" then essentially what you will have is a paper genocide, a sort of Ethnocide of a specific group of Germans by then being lumped in with others simply based off of skin color and not ETHNICITY. Lineage matters

In Germany, with our history, asking about 'race' is an absolute no-go. It should be a no-go anywhere.
Why on earth should a government know, what colour your skin is? Which 'races' are there, Europeans, Africans, Asians? Who is a 'Black' or 'African'? Should we take the US-American approach of 'one-drop of blood' or the ones Jews were qualified after the Nuremberg Racial Laws, 'Half-Black' with two black grandparents, 'Quarter-Black' with just one?

While on one hand being invisible can be a good thing - conceptually; the problem is the fact that so many black got snatched and scattered through the slave trade; the history of being black.
How it matters for people looking to track their family history. Their lineage. How it’s wrong or some how bad to be black in other countries and we face intense racism because of our portrayal be it beauty standards, classism, stereotypes etc. And how because of said effect a lot of things considered “black” has been white washed, we-written, or straight up brushes under the rug and said: you didn’t exist here (or were refused to even be documented because you’re black), or simply for the crime of your skin we can’t include you “sorry”. How entire gems have been lost. So it matters for a lot of reasons beyond simple prejudice or racism.
If you want to be one sided about it: It matters for people in the states because we are the U.S 👽👍🏾 and just because…why not gather the data? There is no reason not to. Data is data. Knowledge that can be utilized in the future. Knowledge is power. Why not? For science. At this point if you want to be so objective - “I’m just asking about your skin. but racism has made skin a touchy subject. If they asked you about your height or hair color, would the defensiveness still remain?

I didn't really find the video fully told a story. There weren't any examples of racism in the video. The example of racism is the lack of collection of data? Does this mean they can see racial inequities like poverty, lack of education, violence, police brutality. I don't understand what exactly proves that the lack of data means. I would like personal stories of racism in other words because there is still a possibility that Germany may have the least amount of racism occurring when compared to much more racist countries. In the US for example, I believe all black people should not be considered the same for census data because Africans and African-Americans are having different realities. Nigerians and Kenyans for example have higher salaries than African-Americans in African American communities where lots of black on black violence occurs. There's always going to be issues against immigrants, but we don't know that the data proves racism, and they seem to preemptively say that it would prove racism. Data collection is a science, and we have to do it correctly for results to be conclusive. They were so emphatic about what the results would prove without first collecting the data. That's not right.

There is no poverty, lack of education etc.
Also most only marry natives and after two generations they are white. There is no community. Some immigrants in germany are from China, some from india, somd from, kenia, some from ghana. But they dont group themselves based on a colour. The only communities that are a community and who live close together are the turkish guestworkers and their descendants who came in the 50ies and the romani communities, and there in fact is lack of education, poverty etc
These africans who grow up in germany are getting paranoid because they allways watch american tv series, Hollywood, American social media etc.
The whole media in germany is 80 percent american. And it is allways big news when in united states someone is shot by police
And because these african american people are called "black"
they think it has something to do with themselves and therefore they get paranoid. Never underestimate the influence of media.

Why do you even compare Nigerans or Kenyans with african americans and not with immigrants per se. I mean in germany there are some indians but noone ever compares them to romani gypsies, alltough they have more in common, for example the sanskrit based language

    24. Which leads me to add one Remark: That the Number of purely white People in the World is proportionably very small. All Africa is black or tawny. Asia chiefly tawny. America (exclusive of the new Comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth. I could wish their Numbers were increased. And while we are, as I may call it, Scouring our Planet, by clearing America of Woods, and so making this Side of our Globe reflect a brighter Light to the Eyes of Inhabitants in Mars or Venus, why should we in the Sight of Superior Beings, darken its People? why increase the Sons of Africa, by Planting them in America, where we have so fair an Opportunity, by excluding all Blacks and Tawneys, of increasing the lovely White and Red? But perhaps I am partial to the Complexion of my Country, for such Kind of Partiality is natural to Mankind. - Benjamin Franklin
The black Diaspora in America ironically have more [ab]original Germanic blood than modern pale-skinned Germans whose ancestors descended from slavic/english tribes.

I understand that black people experience racism and the structural racism of the USA become more and more visible to all of us. But I feel that black people kind of import that problems or bring them here by always talking of the "black community". If they come to Germany they should try to become part of the German community. Imagine I would write about the German "white community"...

Well that you do not have to do that dear..... You do not even have to use the word "GERMAN" in America, you good, you White and you will not need to find a community of German community! Remember this is about MONORITIES especially Blacks/Africans that come here and have their hands tied and not able to get a decent job with decent pay with ALL the credentials to get the job and money! I just started seeing people of color driving City Buses, Managers in places! I am sure just about everywhere you go it is MOSTLY Germans( Whites) We don't bring anything here ......again how many times can you say you have been asked to leave, you not wanted, not served INTENTIONALLY in a store or called out of your name because you were .....we just want to be treated like the you are treated! i know I do.. I pay TAXES!!!

There is no doubt that there is racism in Germany, but a census wouldn't solve that problem.

@Yorkie Newman Yes, that is true, I said nothing different. For some black people this may be the case. But the number of black people in germany clearly increased sharply in the last decades. And there are a lot of videos from Black people that just arrived in germany and they talk about their experience, i referred to those videos. I did with no word say that black people are not german. But you kind of proved my point, because when I said we should all be living together as one people you find a way for misinterpretation. By the way, when you say "you guys", what exactly did you mean? What do you know about me?

There is no black, yellow etc. Community in Germany. There are only ghanaian, senegalese, somali, chinese, indian communities in germany. They dont share anything in common. Like no japanese are going to china parties, also no nigerians go to ghana parties. And why should they. Polish also dont go to romanian parties in germany.
The perspective of this video comes only from a small group of people that is brainwashed by american racial colour narratives, they allways read american books, watch american social media and mistake themselves for "black" in an african american sense. But for the most part noone is like that.
Also it is to note that most people of african descent are half caste mraning half german, so there arent that much black africans in germany. And this counting personsons of a "race" resembles the counting jews during nazi ära, when everyone with a jewish father or even grandfather was put in the statistics.
