    Thank you for your videos on The Poet's Wife, The Lady of Shalott and Munstead Wood. This is my second season with all of them... hoping they will get BIG. All three are stunningly beautiful. Thank you for your videos. I enjoy them very much.

      I agree, I have around 100 roses in my garden and she is the tallest and widest off them all, in fact the harder I prune her she seems to see it as a challenge and grows even bigger😂

      Thank you for your comment it’s something that’s been mentioned before but I’m not a TH-camr by a-ha I’m an Instagram are my videos are always filmed in one take never edited never go onto a computer as a result multiple camera angles aren’t really possible for this kind of thing I don’t intend to change the format in which I’m working, for me my media must be organic And unedited or unfortunately you would not get my true opinion of what I’m talking about

    I have mine in a 50cm x 50cm pot in 5-6 hours of sun and it is getting ready for its second flush. Very large incredibly fragrant blooms. Havent had to support it yet, but it looks like it could get unruly. Other than the color, it reminds me of Princess Alexandra of Kent with the long canes and huge blooms. Is it close to your top 20?

    I have this rose that I planted last summer. So it will b its 2nd year now n still small. However, I can't wait for it to bloom so I can sniff endlessly. For some reason, last summer when I had received it the roses smelt like bubble gum as they were so fruity. By the way how do I apply to visit ur garden please Ben. Thanks a lot.

      They’ll be lots of hints and tips about how to look after it in its full personal review. This particular Rose likes a spot where it will receive around six hours of direct sunlight a day, but not all day. It’s a large spreading shrub with long arching, stems and many many thorns. It will need some support as it’s quite floppy and the blooms are very large.

    Hello Ben! I got this rose and actually got 1 for my mother so have 2 to view. They are planted in pots of the highest quality soil and slow release fertilizer and are thriving. I have just one question for you if you would be so kind as to give me your opinion. I have started many Austin roses and they usually show what they can do rather quickly. Well my two poets Wife roses have very small buds and the flowers are all cookie cutter size of 2 inches at best when open. They also have a moderate fragrance at best or almost non detectable. The color is very faded as well. Mine both look similar to the Austin rose Imogen here in the U.S. Could you give me your experience when your plant first started budding?

      Good afternoon, and thank you for your question in my experience with a The poets wife. It did take one or two seasons to really find its stride but it is very vigourous.
      Should you wish do feel free to send me pictures you can DM me on Instagram using the same name
      It is not impossible, but you have the incorrect plant especially if you purchased bare root

    I have just watched your video re The Poets Wife.
    I have only had it for one year in a huge pot. She is a beauty.
    My question is, what is the best feed to keep her healthy in her pot, or should I plant her out?

    Based on what you said, the plant roughly puts out 2 feet of growth from the pruning point, which is perfect for the memorial garden I have in mind. I've seen videos of this rose where the fowers are facing perfectly upwards and other videos where the majority of necks droop dramatically. How do you encourage the blooms/necks of this variety to face up?? Will a hard spring pruning achieve this?

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In my experience it dose hold the blooms up but the plant is very informal and floppy

      @@the_gardenerben Hello there, just a follow up on this beautiful rose...if you google "poet's wife - Overdevest Nurseries" on you tube, you'll see a presentation of this rose with a tidy rounded habit growing in the mid Atlantic region of the US. I posed the same question there and turns out they hard prune theirs to achieve that beautiful rounded look.
      I'm in Canada, so chances are I'll need to hard prune this rose in spring like all my former Austins. It all depends on the individual variety and how much growth it will put out after a hard pruning. For example, Munsted Wood will put out short growth, so I keep it at the front of the border, whereas St. Swithun and Heritage throw out 4ft long canes after being pruned down as low as 2" - 6" from ground level. And yes, winter kill forces us to prune them that low, but we can still enjoy David Austin roses as long as we know what we're doing and the type of Austin we're dealing with. They're to be treated like hybrid teas, floribundas and any other tender rose.
      Canada puts forward brutal winter temperatures & freezing rain, so detrimental to roses. A sharp contrast from the mild & temperate winter climates of the UK, basically moderated by the ocean like the rest of Europe. David Austin roses are bred for and suited to the British climate. Ideally cane/tip hardy to zone 6 & 7 areas of North America. Russia is more comparable to the winters in Canada.
      Having said that, nothing beats St. Swithun as my favourite David Austin!🌹🌱

    Jude the Obscure as the same kind of thorns. I had to get rid of it even though it was a continuous bloomer. But my garden is too small for a plant with such aggressive weaponry. I still have Golden Wings, though, also very aggressive.

    Does this rose fade to cream with pink edges? This is my first flush of roses. I am wondering whether or not I've received the wrong rose.

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I’ve never experienced that this is brilliant yellow gold very deep rich colour. Sometimes you will have the odd flash of orange red if the temperature is cooler, but certainly nothing into the cream spectrum.

      Good afternoon and thank you for your question it is not particularly‘s acceptable and says quite well in comparison to other varieties although over the years it has had one or two spots I’ve made several videos about how to control the black sport but in a nutshell it’s about keeping an eye on your watering mulching and feeding your roses well and making sure they’re in top health and limiting the amount of stress that’s acceptable to

      @@the_gardenerben i am a bit confused about rose pruning. If i need to reduce the height on a rose, can I do that anytime or should I wait until spring? (I just planted these 3 gallon DA pots about 2 months ago)

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Sunshine-xt1vb it’s a very good question being a young an established plant I would always suggest you leave it until the worst of the winter weather has passed once we’ve had our first couple of frosts you may reduce the growth by up to 1/3, this takes the whip out of it meaning that the rose is more stable during the winter and doesn’t get moved about by the wind,
      Your main pruning should then be left until the end of March, this will be your first opportunity to start shaping your new plant to the size and shape you require,
      There obviously is a pruning guide here from myself involving a potted rose
