I grew up on the Welsh border and my parents used to take me to David Austin’s garden centre in Shrewsbury every other weekend. I have many of his roses in my garden. The scent from their blooms still have the power to transport me back to those hazy days wandering around his garden centre with my much missed dad. Loved watching this video. Thank you once again Janey for sharing. Xxx
Wow, that is a special memory. Mine is of my late mother’s lilac bush. Every time my lilacs bloom the scent memory reminds me of my childhood and her. The very first plant I purchased for my home was a lilac.
Loved today’s focus on David Austin roses. They’re indeed wonderful and I absolutely adore them! I live about 2 hours away from David Austin Rose Gardens, in England, and will be visiting in February for a Rose Pruning Workshop. My first ever visit was in June, and I was blown away seeing their rose catalogue ‘live’ and in their full glory. It’s a sight a rose-lover doesn’t forget easily!
I am so lucky 🍀 I only live 30 minutes away from David Austin Roses 🌹 I visit every year in June and of course I always come back with a wonderful rose 🌹

Mr. David Austin has made a tremendous gift to humanity through his huge passion and tenacity in materializing for us uniquely colored and textured masterpieces as well as divinely smelling. I give him thanks and bow with gratitude 💗. I have these beauties in my garden and not a few 😊, and yes, for me - as well as for Mrs. Fionuala- they are the most beautiful roses in the world. They are unique. Love, love, love them!
BOSCOBELS are on my wishlist. We have 1 grower who sells them here in Cape Town South Africa for dead cheap. SOLD OUT though. When they become available again. Im buying 6 of em
What a great interview! From what I can see in the camera, Fionnula's nursery has a lot of garden decorations also that are ripe for the picking! I just may try to fit in a David Austin in my small garden this Spring. Thanks to Fionnula for sharing her knowledge and passion with us.
I was so excited to hear her say The Pilgrim is a good starter rose because I just bought one, my first David Austin, in November. If you live in Southern Calif. I highly recommend Otto and Sons Nursery in Ventura County for David Austins because they have dozens of varieties all year round. They are growers and offer wholesale prices. I got my Pilgrim during their Thanksgiving sale - it was over 5 ft tall, and was only $35! I don't work for them, I just wanted to mention them because Petaluma is really far for us in southern part of the state.
Aw, this was such a special treat! I grew up in Dublin Ireland and felt an immediate connection to Fionuala so you can imagine my surprise when she mentioned she is Irish. So much good information….Ive been adding David Austin roses to my yard slowly and now I want to go cUrazy buying more! 💚🍀
Eustacia Vye is in Claus Dalby's front garden here in Denmark, climbing on his fence facing towards the street. Unfortunately, it is a one-time bloomer, so I would not go for that one myself. I always go for those repeat flowering roses that come back with a second flush of flowers later in the season. If you like apricot color, I can highly recommend Crown Princess Margareta. She is truly gorgeous and a repeat flowering rose with the most wonderful strong fruity fragrance. I have 2 of her myself and she is one of my favorites. I have several different David Austin roses in my garden. Gertrude Jekyll is so beautiful, a super wonderful choice, and you will become SO addicted like the rest of us, and go back again and again for more David Austins, Janey! 😍😍😍💚
I believe Eustacia Vye is a repeat bloomer - mine is.. Website says it is. It's beautiful . I like Emily Bronte too - tho much paler. Folks rave about Lady of Shallot in the apricot family. I planted a few months ago, so excited to see how it does. Lady Emma Hamilton is also really pretty with striking foliage next to the blooms (also pretty disease resistant)
Gertrude Jekyll was my first DA rose. I chose it first for the fragrance and second for the color. That was many years ago. That and a red rose called Mister Lincoln, started me on my path for loving roses. I have another Gertrude Jekyll on order to anchor the opposite end of one of my beds. Very enjoyable interview today Janey.😊👏
Awesome video! If you could score a visit to her personal garden and bring us along that would be amazing. I planted my first David Austin last year, Generous Gardener and it is doing well so far 🤞. Here on Cape Cod they are kind of difficult to find. I searched all over for another last year and it was slim pickins'. I wish I lived closer as I would definitely make a trip to her nursery. Thank you for sharing:)
I ordered over 40 roses in the David Austin Rose website. I ordered 4 last year just to try and I was really surprised how well they did here in Zone 8a Texas. So I'm going all out this year!
I've been to Cottage Gardens many times when visiting from NW Indiana. My brother, who lives a few miles from Petaluma, has transformed his lot into a beautiful oasis over the past decade and has done a great deal of shopping and soaking up inspiration at CG. If Fionuala were willing, it'd be great to see a garden tour at her home!
It's so funny because I always think of David Austin being formal, and the hybrid tea as "classic". It's so nice that there are so many roses to suit all of our fancies!
For those of us that live on the coast in central California zone 10 on the cooler side. What David Austin rose would you suggest. I had Darby but it didn’t do well here. It’s thriving in my daughter’s garden in zone 10 with hot summers. This nursery is on my list of things to do on a road trip. It’s about 6 hours away. The things us gardeners do to visit an amazing nursery. . Loved the video 🧡🌻
Im on the coast and most of mine do ok unless it's a super foggy summer. Abraham Darby has to be one of my faves but it gets rust like crazy. Even so, it still blooms its head off (it looks funny but the blooms are beautiful). Golden Celebration if you like yellow has been a great rose here - so disease resistant. Most of the pinks have been good too. Dont give up! Keep trying! :)
One of my favorite videos... because I love roses so much and have many David Austins. Had even more before downsizing. Can't wait to see Janey how you integrate more roses to your new space😊🌹
Hey girl heyyy! I love Cottage Gardens in Petaluma! I live just 20 minutes south in Novato! I use to go there every week when I was at the junior college there 🤩 now I make it there about every other month or so 🙌🏼🤩💯
Thank you Janey so much for sharing this wonderful information with all of us!!! I really enjoyed seeing varieties of David Austin's roses. I hope one day I have some in my own garden 😀
I love David Austin Roses and have had great success with them here on the US east coast. I’ve been growing them for over 20 years. My favorite’s are The Poet’s Wife, Eden and Lichfield Angel. This year my new to me…..David Austin to add to my gardens will be Boscobel. I have found them to be extremely easy to care for.
lm so happy you made this video. I ordered last year my first David Austin roses for this year planting and can’t wait for them to arrive and bloom. Thank you Janey 🌹
I've been there before I just love it also. But today I learned so much interesting info about the David Austin Roses. Thank you - you are a gem. Bay Area beginner gardener.
I love David Austin roses! I have Gertrude Jekyll and it keeps it's beautiful fragrance when it ages and dries. Most lose their fragrance or the fragrance changes, but Gertrude's beautiful fragrance last.
I love David Austin roses! I've grown many. In my zone 10b garden, Boscobel has been the best. Only gets 3-4' tall and wide, and the blooms last longer than most DA's.
This makes me want to try roses in our SWFL garden again. I'm already researching ones that will grow well in our area. Thank you both for the great video.
Hello from Fairhope Alabama Janey! This was a wonderful dive into David Austin!! I just started gardening last year at 50 and I am in love with these roses! Love your videos! Stay warm!❤️🥀🌺🌸
Lovely video. I have about 150 Austins but have been getting more Kordes that do well in my hot and humid Virginia and have beautiful leaves. Meilland and Delbard have some beautiful roses as well,
Love this nursery! Only wish I lived in the area to visit this magical place! I tried Austin roses about 25 years ago, and they got some type of disease and all died. But I do know that they have improved over the years. I might have to buy some and see how they do. 👍🏻💕
This is a great video! I had two Graham Thomas roses on a background arbor and and Eden on my gate archway at my last home. I haven't figured out where to put roses in my new home, but this video has inspired me to get serious about finding space. Thanks Janey!! P.S. I'm in zone 9b in the Central Valley south of you.
I have added 9 David Austin roses to my garden so far. Always trying to figure out where i could plant another. I appreciate how they give information on placing them based on sun direction and shade tolerance. I have 6 on the North side of my house, that can take part shade. Silas Mariner is a favorite. The advice for short climbers is encouraging!
Janey an hour drive isn't so bad. I can see you planting these roses. Just have to ask how many you took home with you? You have that truck to haul them in. Must make the trip worth it...
So informative. I wish I could grow them in N. Florida. To humid and hot I think, seems like growth is always stunted and not many blooms, so I gave up.
I love your videos. Thank you for showing nurseries I have been too and now want to go to again. If you are ever in Lake county Star Nursery in Middletown is amazing!
I live in Texas where we have the dreaded rosé rosette virus. Several years ago I was able to attend the Chelsea Flower Show and talk with the people from David Austin rose. I grow only David Austin roses in pots and so far so good. My favorite is The Poets Wife-prolific and great aroma. Last year I ordered that variety in a tree rose. It’s done very well but gets so top heavy. Can you do a video about how to prune tree roses? Thanks so much!
Hi Celeste! I too am in Texas and have a Boscobel in a pot for the last 2 years. Soil level has dropped. Do you repot yours, or top off with soil?! I’d love any wisdom you could share!!
@@kariswanson5285 I’m in the Dfw area, zone 8A. I grew mine in smaller pots the first year, transplanted them into large cement pots with drip irrigation about 2 years ago. My soil level has remained stable. You can always top off the soil. I have emailed David Austin in the past for advice on growing in pots, they replied fairly quickly. My biggest issue has been with mildew. Neem oil at dusk really helps. This year I’m going to try a smaller climbing rose Wedgewood & Tess of the D’ Urbervilles in pots. So far my best grower is the Poets Wife. The most beautiful bloom is Double Delight. It’s more finicky than the others but worth the effort!
Thanks Janie! Great info, and lovely to hear more from Fionuala! I would love to visit her garden center!!!! I have a question for her (or anyone who might be able to help out!!!). I have a beautiful Boscobel D.A. Rose potted in a large ceramic container. It’s been in there for two seasons. The soil level has sunk and wondering if I should repot it, or if I can add soil on top? She gets regular fertilizer during the growing season. Thanks for any input.
I'm not sure, living closeby, how I've missed this nursery. Although looking at pictures, looks like I could go broke there! Wow! Looks amazing! Love the DA roses. I've got about 40-50 now and 25 on order, Sorry I didnt know Cottage Gardens carried them. Gertrude Jekyll is the perfect rose (I've got in bush form). I've not had success with the climbing version but trying again! It's an amazing rose. If you like yellow, I cant recommend Golden Celebration strongly enough. It's super disease resistant and performs beautifully. So many beauties. Have picked up a bunch of creams including Wollerton for this season, which I can't wait to try (hope it's awesome for my fence)....If you've got a cottage garden, you've got to try DA roses!!
So one *can* prune roots on their bare-root DA roses. I read not to so I dug and dug and dug a very deep hole to plant mine. One didn't survive and another I planted in a container didn't either. DA has a good guarantee so I may be able to replace them.
Gee, wabi-sabi is my lifestyle 😅! I thought I was just an eccentric unconformist, left-over 70s Hippie. I still have dried rose petals from fresh rose bouquets (Summer and late Fall) on my fireplace mantel. Because I like the look AND some were the first & last rose blooms of the year from a Mom-orial Rose ❤.😻
I love this video! I’ve been scouring the David Austin website since Christmas because they have a lot of bare root roses for pre order. I’m trying to do a climber in my front yard against my house and I’ve been going back and forth between the pilgrim and James Galway. But now y’all got me thinking about Gertrude Jekyl!! I can’t decide!!!! I think my heart wants to go for the pilgrim because my mother who has passed loved yellow roses, and so I’ve always been fond of yellow roses. But I think I want to do a light pink color because it will pop against my house more than yellow. Decisions! Decisions!!
Thanks to content creators, i purchased 7 David Austin roses and 5 from heritage roses. I use to despise roses bc of thorns soooo i guess you can say I was definitely influenced 😉. I think your Eden rose is to blame 😂😂😂. Been gardening for year’s without any roses… so i will be posting my exciting new purchases! On another note, Janey there are so many types if sweet potatoe vine, even all green. Can u do a video om the differences? Im guessing mostly leaf structure but some do look alike on PW site. Ohhh and different types of roses too. I bought Crown Princess Margareta, Bring Me Sunsine, Old Wollerton, Carding Mill, the Pilgrim, Claire Austin, and Strawberry Hill. Three arches so hope to have a yellow, apricot and pink arch.
So, no problem with diseases, do you have Japanese beetles. Between the two, if the beetles make me as crazy this yr as last, sadly I'll be done with roses. I would love to see Fionuala home garden, it must be stunning.
What a great interview! I love David Austin roses ! I have one rose in my dog's tiny fenced in backyard in a big pot. But I have tremendous deer pressure & need to purchase a "hunting rifle first 😂( just kidding).we have so many deer 🦌, that my Yorkies tore his ACL running after them and had to have surgery $$$$ 😡 love from Georgia
I can't wait to make a trip to Petaluma and purchase a few roses for my garden. 💰 You will have to make trip to Singing Trees Gardens in McKinleyville, especially in the late spring. 🌹 💐
I am planning on planting a row of Olivia Austins along my picket fence but am having trouble getting an idea for the spacing. I am in zone 10a in Southern California and while the DA website says 3.5' wide as they addressed in this video I have heard they grow quite a bit larger here in California. With that said if I was going for one continuous plan with little to no gap between them what would you all recommend for spacing between each?
I have 5 bare root DA in my cart. I do need to pull the trigger. Have 2 Lady of Shallot which were said to do the best in my southern hot/humid location. Hope the others will do well. I would love to see a video on growing a rose on an obelsik or maybe I have the wrong one on it. It just blooms at the top. Maybe I should get the short climber??? My current climber in there is not a DA. Thanks for the video!
Just FYI. The apricots will bleach out to yellow in the hot sun and won’t be that beautiful peachy color until late fall. I have them and am very disappointed in that as I really wanted the peachy color. I agree with her about Gophers LOVING roses. They will eat the roots to a nub. I try to get buy the DA roses Own Root because of our freaky weather Falls and Spring. 1 year I lost nearly all 70 of my DA roses to a freak freeze. Now I am down to 20 or so with a couple on order. Heirloom roses carries a bunch of DA roses and they grow them all on their own roots. Graham Thomas was my gateway DA rose. Found it at Home Depot barefoot 20+ years ago.
Thanks for a great video! We don’t see many David Austin roses for sale in Colorado and I’ve never seen a bare root for sale. I see you can order directly from David Austin online so I will do that this year. My only issue with them has been that the flowers are too heavy for the stem so they droop. Any ideas on if I can address that somehow?
I grew up on the Welsh border and my parents used to take me to David Austin’s garden centre in Shrewsbury every other weekend. I have many of his roses in my garden.
I want them all!!!!!🤦❤️
I recently did a video on roses as well, and the Gertrude Jekyll is one of my favorites 😍
Can't wait to get my hands on it!
I have "Lady Emma Hamilton." It's a gorgeous apricot-orange blend with award-winning fragrance. Also, love "Jude the Obscure."
Omg😂😂😂 that's my new montra.
@@JAYNEmM1962 yeah! I thought wabi-sabi was something completely different!😻
Decisions! Decisions!!
I love my David Austin roses. Boscobel and Gabriel Oak do the best for me.
What are your won the piñata rose? I bought 2 this year. They are my first David Austin’s. I’m so excited.
Wow beautiful! Where are you located? I’ve been looking for Jude the Obscure. I’m in Newark, Delaware. Extremely hard to find.
A nice nursery, I really wish we had nicer nurseries close to me in north Louisiana. Then I would be broke also!😉
Does she ship the roses ?
What a great interview! I love David Austin roses ! I have one rose in my dog's tiny fenced in backyard in a big pot. But I have tremendous deer pressure & need to purchase a "hunting rifle first 😂( just kidding).we have so many deer 🦌, that my Yorkies tore his ACL running after them and had to have surgery $$$$ 😡 love from Georgia
Take us to visit her garden, please!
I can't wait to make a trip to Petaluma and purchase a few roses for my garden. 💰 You will have to make trip to Singing Trees Gardens in McKinleyville, especially in the late spring. 🌹 💐
I love Meilland roses.
I wouldnt call this a "deep dive" into DA roses but it was interesting to hear her story.
I love roses! Glad to know how to properly pronounce Eustacia Vye. I’ve said it differently in every video and they’ve all been wrong 😂
I live in a zone 3-4 and would like to try and plant a few David Austin Roses, which ones would you suggest.
Can you prune all roses so short? Like the ones here in pots?
What three recommendations do you have for those in the desert where we have dozens of days over 110 degrees.
I so desperately want to get some david austin, will the survive in Canada's harsh weather ????
I have to put all mine in gopher cages, or they'll destroy them. I'm soooo sorry you lost 70... OMG I'd have been devastated!
