  • Possil Park, an industrialised area of North Glasgow has an amazing history, as a leader of the world's finest Iron goods, during the Victorian era. Most Glaswegians are unaware that this was the reason why the industrial estate was created and grew into one of the city's biggest "Suburbs"
This section of the film deals with Walter McFarlan and Co "Saracens Iron Foundry" In Possil Park. Documents the creation of Possil as an Industrial estate.

Thanks for the video. My grandfather was an apprentice pattern maker there pre 1914 then worked there between the two wars. The houses in Hamiltonhill were sought after -only respectable working families could rent them. Decades later I worked as a Community Nurse in the area and it was so sad to see the poverty and despair. Thankfully the last 10 years have seen improvement in the housing stock.

Thanks for this history, my Great Grandfather and his son, initially worked as molders in the foundry in Kirkintilloch, then in the foundry in Possil Park before emigrating to New Zealand in 1925 where they started a foundry producing cast iron products for the new country and became quite successful from the skills they had learnt in their native Scotland.

My Grandfather Walter Donaldson, was foreman in the foundary, at the
turn of the Century . He was also involved with the Perthshire Football
Club. The Donaldson family lived in Burmola Street.

It should be noted that it was only 15 years for poverty to set in.
With a government in London with Mgt Thatcher as the leader what chance did Possilpark and the like have?
