I still remember him in concert blowing the most amazing smoke rings over the crowd. Incredible. I also loved how tight their concerts were. Fast, deafening and one song after the other. He played as good onstage as on album. A really great guitarist who also gave great concerts. His riffs sounded like 2 guitarists, not 1. He sounded amazing. Wished I had seen them in LA when they were at Whiskey A Go Go. He was the reason LA rockers took over Rock.
First VH, then Guns n Roses and Metallica. Van Halen stopped the Brits and brought the LA rock scene to the very top.
A lot to be proud of.

To make it truly great, when he brought the guitar it wasn’t the red one from the videos, it was the very first guitar he had “striped” a yellow one, and when offered the chance to personally place it in the coffin with Dime he said he wouldn’t be able to keep from breaking down once he saw him like that. A tremendous amount of respect between two greats.

"Van Halen shared the stage with guitarist Zakk Wylde, the two downing shots of liquor as they talked about their rock comrade. "
"On the other hand it was also sad to see Eddie Van Halen in the shape he was in. There's a point when being drunk just isn't funny and Eddie Van Halen was at that point tonight"
"He was rude and abnoxious and wouldn't give Zakk Wylde one second to talk. If I was Zakk I would of gave Ed a good sock in the mouth to shut him the hell up"
"The memorial was sweet, but I didnt like the way an obviously distraught Rex was rushed off the stage. But [the city of] Arlington does have curfew laws and they couldn't very well rush Eddie fucking Van Halen offstage"
"Eddie Van Halen was there and so was Zakk Wylde and they were both pretty buzzed from drinking".
      Another person said
"When Eddie came out and stole the thunder from what was beggining to be a very good tribute from Zakk, it was really obnoxious. It almost seemed like Eddie realized that the world may not be revolving around him for a few minutes and he had to fix that. It broke out into almost an Abbott and Costello routine between he and Zakk. There were a few times I thought Zakk was going to kick Eddie's ass. He didn't seem entirely amused by the whole thing.

Jerry Cantrall said he met EVH for 5 mins while both were on tour, and JC commented how he hoped to be able to afford an entire EVH rig one day, they said good bye and didn’t see each other again for couple years.
Jerry was living in a buddies basement at the time. and when he came off tour his buddy picked him up and was a little pissed about Jerry staying in the basement, and Jerry couldn’t understand the reason since he had been gone for a while and the basement was empty…but when he got home and went to basement it was full of EVH speaker cabs, amps heads, guitars and all the accesssories. So there may have been some crazy in the genius that was EVH, but he was also a kind, intelligent and caring man.

This was interesting but there were several factual errors. I don't feel like listing them all, but for one, Van Halen only opened up for UFO one time and that was at the Golden West Ballroom. When Gene Simmons saw them at The Star Wood, VH was opening for a local band called The Boyz with George Lynch on guitar. Also, The Broken Combs was a very early band when Ed and Al were kids. Eddie played piano and Alex played sax. Also, you really oversimplified the Gene Simmons story and left stuff out. Simmons produced a demo tape for them in L.A. and then flew thrm to NYC to audition for KISS's manager Bill Aucoin. He decided to pass on Van Halen. That is what ended their connection with Simmons.

I’ve seen quite a few videos on VH, but I don’t recall the story about his father losing a finger. That’s pretty much every musician’s fear. It worked out for Tony Iommi, and Django, but those are the only famous guys I know who overcame it.

That isn't how Alex tells it. Interviews with Alex he states >> it wasn't until he heard Eddie play Eric Clapton crossroads lick for lick that the two decided to reverse their roles. Which would have to mean if true that Alex was at least a GREAT guitar player at that point considering what it takes to learn and then play crossroads note for note . Which he wasnt and isnt so its obviously a lie.
