    When I was in Somalia we were given 5 of these every couple of days to hand out to locals we became familiar with. The locals would split each one up as 2-3 meals. We would also sometimes give them our own MRE's. Us as soldiers would be patrolling with a weeks worth of MRE's in our pack or vehicles while food was waiting for us in the Mess tent on base.

    The reason the ration lacks drink is due to us sending water separately, when we did send cases of HDRs it was almost always in tandem with bottled water, as such, HDRs were made for a full belly, not hydration

    The only thing you could have stressed a bit more was that these are intended to be an entire day's food for one person. They are compiled from ingredients that violate no known religious proscription - even the hand wipe is non-alcohol.

    • @effendyhamzah7582
      @effendyhamzah7582 6 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    Back in the day, troops would give MREs to people in disaster circumstances and if the people had food restrictions for religious beliefs, they often would not eat them if the MRE appeared to have meat. These vegetarian menus eliminated that hesitation. My brother in law worked at that facility.

    These rations could be greatly improved by adding of tea. 🍵
    I dont think the importance of tea in many cultures where HDRs were distributed can be understated. Tea is a symbol of comfort and friendship. Tea is shared between family, friends, and offered to strangers as a symbol of hospitality. Tea costs next to nothing. I can buy 20 individually wrapped tea bags at the dollar store in one of the most expensive places to live in the USA in bulk they could easily procure 3 tea bags for ¢5 for each HDR. Besides the cultural importance caffeine helps clear the mind and tea can cover unpleasant tastes in water like purification tablets or dirt.

    Why does no HDR reviewer put the jam on the shortbread? It looks like a match made in ration heaven.

    • @rabooey
      @rabooey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think it's because even just a halfway decent shortbread is still great to savor all on its own, while salted crackers can surely be spruced up. Also, maybe nostalgia. I use to love making mini-pb&j's with salted Ritz crackers when I was a kid. Personally, if I were eating this ration, I'd leave the shortbread as is, use all the pb&j on the two salted crackers, and use the vegetable crackers with the mains(either broken up and tossed into them, or like you'd use a slice of bread to mop up the good stuff). If there was only one set of crackers, I'd use all the pb&j on just one of the crackers and use the other on the mains.

      No it is not! Only Americans eat that crap. Can you really imaging some starving African/Arab opening one of these and going "ooh goody, peanut butter and jelly - my favourite"! While I am sure either one will give no end of pleasure (and energy) to the receiver (who has probably not eaten anything sweet or savoury for some time), it leaves me gobsmacked that anyone would think of providing the makings of something so American as a P&J sandwich to starving or war torn refugees. American cultural imperialism at its best! It would be like us Brits sending over freeze dried full English breakfasts or fish and chips!Incidentally, it makes perfect sense not including powdered drinks in the MRE; where will the water come from? It would probably be polluted or unsafe. Presumably, they will be happy if they receive bottled water with the MRE - they probably will not miss the so called 'grape juice' drink or American tea bags anyway - I know I don't.

      Im fairly sure that if there is a humanitarian presence in a "war torn" or starving country they would all so be handing out water.

    I got a 2021 batch and buy that lentil stew still slaps. They give you branded poptarts and two hard cookies instead of the figs and shortbread. They also still give you peanut butter and jelly but only give you a pack of vegetable crackers, which do not go with the peanutbutter and jelly, so Im not sure whats going on there. The barley is the other standout winner entre.

  • @colinmartin9797
    @colinmartin9797 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just bought a case of 10 of these (freshly made, they're a hair under $50 for ten full day meals, which is kind of insanely cheap) for camping or days when I'm gonna be in too much of a rush to pack a breakfast/lunch. I've only tried the menu #1 thusfar, but it was lentil stew, barley veg stew, vegetable crackers, 2x unfrosted brown sugar poptarts, oatmeal cookie, shortbread cookie, peanut butter, strawberry jam, and a packet with spoon/napkin/wetwipe/salt/pepper/sugar/red chili flakes/matches.
    I'll be damned if it wasn't _really_ good. The oatmeal cookie was almost scone-like, really dry and dense but had lots of molasses and some ginger, the crackers were great with the barley stew (which itself was really solid) and I'm just waiting until dinner to try the rest/will have the poptarts for breakfast.
    The only improvement I could think of would be (and this is totally not what they're made for) making the packets that the entrees come in microwave-safe like some of the pre-made indian curries are (I tested it and after about a minute I got a spark, so they are foil-packed) and maybe giving a couple teabags or sachets of instant coffee, because otherwise I can't think of a use for the sugar. But I keep teabags in my backpack, so it's fine.
    I'm absolutely going to keep a case of these things on hand from now on. $5 for an entire day's worth of totally decent food is kind of amazing. I just need to pack a flat-collapsing bowl to microwave them in when I'm on campus.
