I don't think anyone else makes videos like this at this quality. Linus is really the top tier from what I've seen. If anyone has decent competition to mention, by all means, speak up. I need more stuff like this.
Am I the only one that can't stand perfect silence? When my computer's running, I like having the ambient background noise of the fan, as long as it's not overwhelming. I dunno why, I just find it soothing, because I know everything's working.
Only thing that used to worry me about sound dampening is when a mechanical drive is about to go and you can't hear it. Although that's a relatively loud sound.
gregor clegane hmm have mixed feeling about this sure they are quiet but damn that instant torque is mind blowing trust me on that. but still like the sound and feel of an engine especially my jeep but i like electric cars to.
gregor clegane You know computers are not run on fuel...They're run on electrical currents and tensions...so... Bad comparison. Electric cars are good, bro, they're just too silent, but they're fast and very clean when it comes to pollution. Remember, you're the one who's breathing all that carbon monoxide coming from cars everyday. Not that they're the only source, but they're not the least polluting source either.
Sean Fiske I love the build! But man your going to get a bottleneck with a Pentium and a 970, I would really recommend going to an i5, otherwise the rest of your build is great :) best of luck!

One thing I will mention is that the PSU being upside-down _may_ alleviate this. I forgot about that.
This is a computer case optimized for silence, not airflow. There is no vortex inside the case significant enough to make any difference. The front and back fans will push air into each other, and any hotter air will rise to be exhausted through the top. It's basic thermodynamics, and not hard to understand. Plus, as long as there is any airflow at all inside the case, convection will take over and do most of the work anyway.
Old video but still some good information here. I wasn't aware that Seasonic was making fanless power supplies in 2014. They have 700W ones now. BeQuiet is a great company. Their fans really helped quiet my computer, though I'll be switching them out for Noctua NF-A12x25 fans which proved to be 3dB quieter in tests. I was surprised that you took the fans out of your BeQuiet heatsink. Didn't think that was an option for an I7 processor. They've got standalone sinks for 90W processors and below but nothing for the 125W gaming processors of today. Noctua has been teasing a 3 Kilo one since 2019. A silent GPU is the holy grail. The Palit GTX 1050 Ti KalmX 4 GB graphics card is the only thing that comes close, and it's near impossible to get a hold of one. It can play all the 1080 pre-2018 games perfectly on max settings, but for 4K it's supposed to be rubbish.
+Vsevolod Nedora might not be such a good idea, without air as the medium to transfer to, the heatsinks will simply build up heat and only radiate it outwards at a very slow and inefficient rate. the fans will also do nothing which would rise the overall system temperature a bit.
+John Mosier That is not true. Infrared radiation from a human body is incredibly small, you'll go hours before getting cold ( and that's if you're completely in the shade. If you're not you will without a doubt absorb more IR than you emit).
the only problem is that biologically you cannot smell yourself because of a defenesive mechnism inside the brain allowing you to smell the surrondings and just forget the smell(s) of your own body ... when you can smell yourself that means there is a ton of bactria on your skin and you should wash yourself with alot of soap and water as haveing that much bactria on your own skin is not healthy mainly because it is the bad bactria that you can smell while the good bactria you cannot when it is yourself of course.
This is probably one of the best videos I've seen on youtube so far. I can promise you that I will share this this video with plenty of friends and I'm 100% sure that they'll love it. =)
I'm pretty sure that they use Adobe Premiere and After Effects. The quality of production is pretty insane though. I'm so jelly of the editing that Edzel especially can do.
Redheadsrule13 Editors been using material design transitions that makes it smoother and easy on the eyes. I was impressed that they're using those transitions across all their videos now.
xAsmir Yeah, but the editing I'm talking about is the material design styled stuff that Edzel does. The cameras are batshit insane as well, but it's more the animation skill that I admire.
Redheadsrule13 Thanks! Graphics were done all in After Effects. I've considered C4D to actually have material design in 3d space as the concept is supposed to represent (paper over paper) but I'm not sure the workflow is quick enough for the deadlines.
I'm a enthusiast to (semi)passive quiet builds and have a custom built optimized for that. I'm astounded as how few good semi-passive builds you can find over the internet. Lots of down points in this video.: 1) 100% passive heat-sinks without fans are completely pointless. There is no reason whatsoever not to have a fan in the cpu's HS and just keep it off for most of the time. And when you want extra performance, you can set it to only turn on at very high temperatures (+75c) to avoid your CPU from frying and still allowing a high overclock than a complete passive HS. Instead of removing the fan, adjusting the cpu's frequency in OS is the best flexible option to choose the optimum compromise between Noise and performance above 75c 2) 120mm fans are terrible options. That is the obvious reason why this build fails at LOAD mode. When going for a absolutely quiet build, the correct choice of fans size and models are crucial. The ideal CASE would have the biggest fan supports as possible, preferably with no 120mm fans whatsoever. If you have 140 200 and 120 mm fans, you would notice that the 140mm will be much more efficient pumping air than the 120mm. The 200mm will be particularly better for top exhaust at very low rpms (600~800). The case in this review does not support a rear 140mm exhaust fan, so that would be a instant cut-out for me. The 120mm fan selection is not the best either, Corsair's SP120 quiet edition is the best CFM vs Noise ratio fan in the market. 3) While 100% passive PSUs are neat, they are not a good choice cost-wise since they usually are ridiculously expensive. A supernova G2 which is semi-passive up to 300w would be the best balanced option. 4)This is a extremely overpriced build, btw, only few people could afford it. Quiet semipassive pcs DON´T NEED TO BE over ~750USD. Mine isn´t (if you don´t account for the SSDs). 5) The rear fan used as intake is another choice that I believe is not very good, as it blows air away from the top opening grill and reduces the natural convection of the massive HS. 6) Another criticism of this case is that it's top and front grill are considerably obstructed by pointless plastic aesthetic-parts. I don´t believe the compromise of sealing the CASE with plastic and rubber for absorving the sound of the fans is always the best as it cranks up heat inside and limits the thermal dispersion of the build, thus the maximum performance. Bigger low-rpm fans with large area grills is the best option IMO. 7)Related to the previous 2 itens: Semi-passive builds should have NEGATIVE pressure, not positive. 8) No undervolting on the CPU? Boooh No moderate overclock? Double Booh. 9) I haven´t seen emphasis on trying to find the sweetspot speed of the case fans, ramming them all way to the max as the CPU gets to 70c is not an intelligent choice. A high static pressure cooler on the HS, as stated on item one, would be a better option and finding the ideal max speed of the case fans is also essential. For my build, I found that having my 140mm fans at 700rpm and the 200m at 600 is the sweet spot, enough to reduce the Delta-V from ambient from 12 (complete passive, a average midtower, btw) to a mere 1.5. Increasing the fans speed to 1200 and 900 rpm (their maximum) bumped the noise a lot and didn´t reduce the Delta-V significantly more.
Also another detail I noticed, a low-noise resistor adapter is only a good option for fans that actually can start up at lower voltages (5 volt and bellows). However, if you don't go with this exact silent wing models, usually a pwm controlled fan will go lower speed (thus noise) than a voltage reduced fan.
I've been researching how to quieten my system so I think that's why I was lead here, but even though I've got no intention of building a PC, I still can't look away from this video lol. Love this channel!
Is that Fred from those Fred videos?!??! Edit: No.. no it is not. Just looked up who Fred was and it's not this guy. But damn, that's a great silent build! My current build is pretty silent thanks to the H110x v2 water cooler and some custom padding for 2 of my secondary hard disk drives. The GPU is still very loud under load, but there's no real avoiding that I guess.
The silent room measurement with Mike Chin from silentpcreview is interesting at 15:38. Good stuff, didn't know there was a community around silent gaming PCs.
I feel like a lot of people are interested in the folding performance of new graphics cards. Folding on a CPU doesn't seem like a wise idea, but those new 30 series nvidia GPUs look promising in performance per watt category. Thanks
Would the human ear be able to tell the difference between 23 and 27 dp's?? It's extremely marginal, I think you guys did a great job. Cool that you bought another tech company into your video to help them out too. Keep up the great work
I used to try and build my PCs silent. I used them primarily as workstations since I've found loud PCs can affect mood. In recent years I've given up on doing so. I made a hole in my office and the computer is off in a seperate room. My computer has 8 total fans and I still somewhat hear it through the wall, but with music playing, which is basically ALWAYS, I don't hear it anymore. You just have to be prepared to purchase many long wires and extensions to still run your displays/accessories.
I think Linus mentioned in the video that he used one the best CPUs on the market to really test the cooling, so obviously you can switch that out to something more affordable. Without the CPU, the parts come to something like $2200. The motherboard and RAM are some of the more expensive pieces, so you could theoretically switch those out to more affordable options and still end up with the same noise level. Really, I think the only things in this particular build you CAN'T switch out are the case, the heatsink, and the fans. Another part of note is the motherboard, which you might need to consider careful based on PCI slots and RAM placement, along with other components that might interfere with the CPU heatsink. Other than that, price is largely up to what you decide to put in it.
Sverre Nielsen u can make that 3500 EUR, making it over 4000 USD based on current prices in Belgium mobo 500+, CPU 1000, CPU cooler 85, RAM 550, case 120, fans 50+, GPU 600, power supply 150, SSD 450 (prices in EUR)
I put it all together here pcpartpicker.com/p/rNQPhM If you don't want to click through, without the OS, and before shipping and promos it came to $4551.76 A lot of those prices would vary depending on where you are.
Linus seems personally invested in quiet computing, which is nice and comes through in stuff like this. Other channels will give lip service to noise levels but they don't seem to care as long as it can be measured at a "noise normalised" level which is significantly louder than what any quiet computing enthusiast would aim for anyway. Small details like Linus opting for a super sized air cooler over an AIO show he gets it
+DualReaver11 Kailh is shameful. I really don't understand why Razer is so overpriced and "genuine" for those "gamers", given that their mechanical keyboards are craply made of crap. Had a Black Widow TE Silent (I was once also 12), felt like soggy cardboard compared to any other MX Cherry Brown keyboard. And their RGB version of the same design costs more than some Corsair keyboards, which is still giving me aids.
Tell me about it...the first time I booted mine my fans were running at a really low RPM...and all I could hear was my cocking HDD ticking away...I've since turned up the fan speed...and I can still hear the HDD -_-
Arjan Stoop Unfortunately it wasn't the vibration, it was the click-click-clicking of it reading/writing data. At the time it was a 2.5" drive kind of ghetto mounted using foam to wedge a 2.5-3.5 sled into a floppy bay. I've since replaced the case and now it's mounted on an SSD mount behind the motherboard tray. Less audible but still there. Once I turned up the fans (which to me is a more tolerable noise) it masked it fairly well. I have had drives that did vibrate through the chassis though...and fans too...and they are annoying as hell.
Vrunchy Crunchy Why not just get a 250gb SSD from Samsung and have a 2-4TB storage as extra storage or if you have a 1GB upload and download, just use online storage.
1$ per gig being considered cheap, damn how far we've come. My wd nvme ssd is rated for twice the speed at 2 gigs per second, but it's barely more than 10 CENTS per gig, it's only 3 times the price of a equivalent hard drive. Development in other sectors have been pretty meh in comparison, compare the best card of the time, a 980, to a 3090 and the results are a bit disappointing. Instead of double performance for a tenth of the price, it's 3-4 times the performance, which sounds pretty good, but it costs waaaaaaaay more.
naw man iris graphics are horrible I have a 970, and the fact that you didn't list the product number of the i5 (btw) there are no dual core desktop i5 AND there are no iris 4000 dumbass
When i was working at a local computer workshop here in Sweden i built a silent PC for a customer. I couldn't hear it at all even when i put my ear flat on the side door, even when all fans was at 100%. I did not have any equipment to measure audio levels at the time, but here are the specs. I used an NZXT H630 case (Without window) For the airflow i went with the standard 200mm fan at the front, an NZXT 1000 RPM air-flow optimized fan at the top drive cage and a 120mm radiator from Cooler Master in push-pull at the back with 2x NZXT 1000 RPM static pressure fans for a total of 4 fans. I really recommend that case if you want a premium silent computer.
They're super strict haha, I know the build was sponsored by be quiet and all, would've probably been a lot quieter in an R5. Just depends on load tuning though. You can undervolt and under clock to hit a fps minimum... Its the opposite of what people usually do haha but it's all about silent gaming
Zareth DeTullio I know, I was bummed when I saw this case, knowing an R5 is "the" cheap-ish standard these days. Remember how tough it was building silent even 5 years ago? Things have changed quite a bit. I'm hoping this video will boost SPCR's exposure a bit. The content is ALWAYS great, but I just wish there was more of it.
At 12:19, that fan filter will be completely ineffective because the fan will just pull air in from around the fan filter since there is about 3/4 inch gap at the top and bottom of the fan filter for the fan to pull air in through.
I miss this amazing editing. So much more professional than new videos.
right.
linustechtips were never professional, ever.
Watching their old reviews of them reading off the box yet still producing a fairly good review boggles my mind.
Did he seem RYzen?! (Ok I will leave now.)
absolutely agree with you, this actually feels professional and premium
My pc is silent. but why is the monitor always black?
RRainerss sshh its a joke
Did you peel off the black plastic on your screen?
Smashing Ryan Yes theres like a spider web tho :/
I just got a new monitor, i tried turning the monitor. Nothing happens pc is still silent tho, which is nice!

Next build the loudest PC ever. Use combustion engines instead of electric motors for the fans. use 4 of those expensive useless 10k rpm HDDs,
+martinshoosterman The worst were the 5200 RPM "Green" HDD's that were SLOW AS BALLS, especially when its 2+ tb.
and remember to put two Radeon 6870's in there

the same reason why electric cars are shite

Wow! You guys really like material design! Makes me love your videos even more
what I like about Linus is they seem honest at the end he went and give the true result of the rig...thumbs up for this.
im sorry, do i see intake fans on the front and back?
Yes
Yep, it's exhausting through the top.
He hoped so, but it's actually just swirling around inside the case.

I have one question though, can it run Internet Explorer?
+Francis Moran nope, only opera browser
+Francis Moran It may run notepad on lowest settings, at 1 frame every 100 seconds if you overclock cpu to 1petahertz and gpu to 500 terahertz.

I have a hunch this was sponsored by Bquiet.
Lmao "less than a dollar per gig" with 2 480gb ssd's so almost $1000
+ClickyGaming not pci-e
But you are forgetting that it it was run in RAID 0 which means that he was only getting HALF of that memory.
+Read Adams half of the total of 480x2, right?
Dan Jacques
yea, the idea is that you get the speed of 2 SSD's but only the memory of 1.
+Read Adams do you know how raid 0 works it strips them both together with no redundancy, your thinking of raid 1
This is probably one of the best videos I've seen on youtube so far.
I can promise you that I will share this this video with plenty of friends and I'm 100% sure that they'll love it. =)
Very good video ser !
Anyone know what programmes they use to edit theese videos? they look pretty sick :)
I'm pretty sure that they use Adobe Premiere and After Effects. The quality of production is pretty insane though. I'm so jelly of the editing that Edzel especially can do.
Redheadsrule13 u also have to understand that their cameras are fucking pro stuff.....4k resolution and expensive shit...
Lots of down points in this video.:
1) 100% passive heat-sinks without fans are completely pointless. There is no reason whatsoever not to have a fan in the cpu's HS and just keep it off for most of the time. And when you want extra performance, you can set it to only turn on at very high temperatures (+75c) to avoid your CPU from frying and still allowing a high overclock than a complete passive HS. Instead of removing the fan, adjusting the cpu's frequency in OS is the best flexible option to choose the optimum compromise between Noise and performance above 75c
2) 120mm fans are terrible options.
Verified. Nice.
For my school project I had to create a PC build that was capable of high end gaming whilst staying quiet and I built pretty much this exact build.
Stephen P Okay.
Stephen P If I read that correctly that means sam is stephens mother?
Who paid for the school project?
Esa Edvik Theoretical build.
Sam Smith Ah, right. Didn't even think of that :D
I am from costa rica and if you see the cpu at 2:26 it says costa rica on it. That proves that costa rica is not only a jungle
okay
The silent room measurement with Mike Chin from silentpcreview is interesting at 15:38. Good stuff, didn't know there was a community around silent gaming PCs.
could you please do the same video only with modern hardware?
I feel like a lot of people are interested in the folding performance of new graphics cards. Folding on a CPU doesn't seem like a wise idea, but those new 30 series nvidia GPUs look promising in performance per watt category. Thanks
Would the human ear be able to tell the difference between 23 and 27 dp's?? It's extremely marginal, I think you guys did a great job. Cool that you bought another tech company into your video to help them out too. Keep up the great work
Decibels aren't that easy. The amount of noise between 23 and 27 doesn't compare to the same gap elsewhere in the spectrum (118 and 121).
Interesting, I'll look into this more if that's true

You sent a Wikipedia link to prove your point? Ouch
bikesandrockets
You want to discredit Wikipedia on something as well known as Decibel ratings?
I can run Minesweeper on ultra settings over 30Fps+
#HARDCOREGAMER
***** On Ultra settings right? Wow. O.o
***** Guess what ... I can run it at 120 FPS ... Deal with it.
ropelli321 I play Minesweeper on Oculus Rift, so you deal with it.
christian carlos Well guess what I just got my Oculus Dev Kit 2 and the Leap Motion. So yea deal with it.
ropelli321 Oh Yeah?, Well i can play Minesweeper with Nunchucks... beat that buddy.
You just have to be prepared to purchase many long wires and extensions to still run your displays/accessories.
you guys should make a 2016 edition with an i7-6950x and 1080
Benito Wymeersch Seconded...
Benito Wymeersch YAAS PLEASE!
lol this pc costs more than a human organ ,wtf
i can hook you up with some cheap organs pm me
Hjembrent Kent any livers spare lol
well that means you better sell more than one of your organs
apostolis633 me typing on Google : "which organs are not vital?"
έλληνας;
How much would this entire step roughly cost?
Given that the cpu alone costs around $1300 (in norway) and the gpu at $707, my guess is around $3000. God damn Norway is expensive !
Sverre Nielsen I know your feelings ;( ( from the Netherlands )
Sverre Nielsen u can make that 3500 EUR, making it over 4000 USD based on current prices in Belgium
mobo 500+, CPU 1000, CPU cooler 85, RAM 550, case 120, fans 50+, GPU 600, power supply 150, SSD 450 (prices in EUR)
I put it all together here pcpartpicker.com/p/rNQPhM
If you don't want to click through, without the OS, and before shipping and promos it came to $4551.76
A lot of those prices would vary depending on where you are.
Small details like Linus opting for a super sized air cooler over an AIO show he gets it
can this run minesweeper?
nope this compuer will be fucked by everything exept pong which gets 15 fps, good luck
+swagy swagger you're not funny.
+MrLTiger he is pretty funny
To use a blue switch keyboard would be a crime.
I am a criminal
*with that computer
Yeh anything besides mx red or kaihlu red would he shameful
+DualReaver11 Kailh is shameful. I really don't understand why Razer is so overpriced and "genuine" for those "gamers", given that their mechanical keyboards are craply made of crap. Had a Black Widow TE Silent (I was once also 12), felt like soggy cardboard compared to any other MX Cherry Brown keyboard. And their RGB version of the same design costs more than some Corsair keyboards, which is still giving me aids.
I would say PC noise is different from keyboard noise. PC noise is annoying, keyboard noise is refreshing.
no cpu fan really scares me...
ikr
It actually has mate, the rear fan in reverse direction.
LUKASSS WOLF HIER HOE KOM IKK JOU TEGEN toeval xd
GewoonUniek Quit wooooowwwwwww
kill kom onlined waar ben je
Best intros ever, you need to do this on all your videos from now on.
The loudest thing in my rig is the hdd... Fuck me
Vrunchy Crunchy I feel your pain. The struggle
Tell me about it...the first time I booted mine my fans were running at a really low RPM...and all I could hear was my cocking HDD ticking away...I've since turned up the fan speed...and I can still hear the HDD -_-
SSD, only solution.
Arjan Stoop
Unfortunately it wasn't the vibration, it was the click-click-clicking of it reading/writing data.
18:03 - 18:15 the struggle is real #try not to laugh
Easy?
What's funny
The Mighty Punion i dont know ask linus'
+(._.) ( l: ) ( .-. ) ( :l ) (._.) yeah he was so sad haha :P
3:56 Deez nuts!
lel
Stale meme
That be dead meme : /
Almost every meme I see is "stale, old and dead".. I personally think if it is funny to someone still, why not? xD
The production quality on that intro was outstanding.
I wonder how many takes it took to film him catching all the tools. lol.
And what about the ULTIMATE Silent Wife??
Alberto Serrano sorry buddy....
This is absolutely the best intro I've seen in a long while
What do you guys think of this build:
2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 Dual Core
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel Iris 4000
Sick or what?
horrible
Kevin Ruan Your just jealous.
naw man iris graphics are horrible I have a 970, and the fact that you didn't list the product number of the i5 (btw) there are no dual core desktop i5 AND there are no iris 4000 dumbass
and you didn't list power supply, storage, brand of memory, and case
My iris 4000 is way better than any dedicated graphics card, 970 fails on benchmark tests. I play BF4 & Metro on max settings at 200 FPS.
>silent PC
>shouts as loud as possible the entire video long
fuck me
I will.
Is it just me having trouble with the audio not syncing correctly in this video?
vid is processing still
gregor clegane And it's done ;)
refresh
When i was working at a local computer workshop here in Sweden i built a silent PC for a customer.
I couldn't hear it at all even when i put my ear flat on the side door, even when all fans was at 100%.
I did not have any equipment to measure audio levels at the time, but here are the specs.
I used an NZXT H630 case (Without window)
For the airflow i went with the standard 200mm fan at the front, an NZXT 1000 RPM air-flow optimized fan at the top drive cage and a 120mm radiator from Cooler Master in push-pull at the back with 2x NZXT 1000 RPM static pressure fans for a total of 4 fans.
I really recommend that case if you want a premium silent computer.
My pc is silent when it is off It worked -!!!
later: my pc at home is too loud, im just going to put it in another room
+ManlyDude thats exactly what I did :D works fine and you don't have to worry about "bad air"/pc visuals
+MegadolonProductions it just sucks when you bought actual good looking components but cannot show off your pc :D
hard drive alone is worth more than a lot of people's gaming rigs
Best intro yet on this channel
tighten down DEEZ four NUTZ
LInus, you should have installed a cpu cooler to the gpu, then it would have been quieter... or silent!
Please go away.
Vrm... You would need a fan on it. Ior custom build the cooler.
There's no place for a CPU cooler as good as the cooler that Asus makes and having a watercooling loop for it results in noise.
I know the srix is good, I have the strix 970, but look at that video I linked, pretty impressive.
tech doge
What video?
I like loud PCs. I just associate noise with power.
MightyElemental that is what my wife tells me at night
That she loves loud PCs?
:) talking about my "night noises" and my power! (sorry, a bad attempt at "That is what she said" type of comeback.
Yes. I understood :P
I was just dragging on a joke.
MightyElemental you are a unique specimen. I myself attempt to make videos and livestream, so I prefer quieter builds.
Finally a professionally edited video
Why don't you just put the PC in a different room
latency
It's quite hard to see the monitor in another room.
Then use Thunderbolt 3!
+Ralakus wth
+Sameul Ahmed Go fuckyourself
Modern linus would be screeching at the lack of noctua components
so silent i can't hear anything...oh shit, my speaker's off.
18.00 the disappointment in his face. Great build series, really well presented ❤
Whole Room Water Cooling Part 3?
It looks like it'll be sometime next week.
LinusTechTips Awww yeeee
is it just me or is that audio wheeeeeyyyy out of sync?
Omg literal boner when I found you went to see Mike from SPCR!!!
A THOUSAND THUMBS UP!
