Muay Thai beginner here. I'm 5'8" and I was sparring a guy who was about 6'2". It was one of my first times sparring, and he threw an overhand to which I responded with the most awkward body hook ever thrown in human history. I hit him square in the balls, but luckily it was funny enough that we both got a good laugh 😅

I remember early in my Muay Thai training being asked to hold a body shield so one of my coaches could demonstrate clinch knees to the body. I was holding the body shield correctly (or so I thought), but every knee he threw was tickling my liver. I distinctly recall desperately trying to keep my facial expression neutral, while I was simultaneously trying not to poop myself and cry in front of all of my training partners. Good times! Also, I've been doing BJJ for years, and I still don't have even the slightest hint of cauliflower ear. I've EARNED those ears, gosh darnit! I have friends that have trained for 6 months that are starting to show signs, but mine are just as normal looking as ever. My wife is grateful, but I'm getting pretty salty about it. Stupid indestructible ears!

@@kiarce3 I wish! I'm a blue belt, so I'm pretty good at not getting submitted, but I'm nowhere near being excellent at grappling. Hopefully someday, though! I'll keep at it because I love it, but I'm definitely more competent standing than on the mat, so there's still a lot of progress to be made.

before the video starts ill just get mine off my chest. Theres two that come to mind. one that was very embarrassing, another that was just brutally scary.
I was like 11 or 12, and had been doing judo for years at that point and was at my green belt. i often practiced with the adult class in to get extra work in and actually progress my skills better (this matters for both stories). by that point i had gotten used to injuries happening, and being roughed up quite a bit by the bigger stronger dudes in the adult class (i was tiny, about 5'10 ish, ik, was a big kid, am a big dude). I specifically remember getting thrown really hard one time and landing pretty awkward, i ended up tearing the top of my ear off my head a little bit, few stitches and a little time and its like it never happened, like i said, at this point i was used to the nature of how things could go, but here is where we diverge. We'll start off with the embarrassing funny story. Being as experienced as i was in judo for my age, my sensei brought me on as an assistant instructor for two of his classes, the youth judo lessons, and the womens/girls self defense course (just an all girl judo's course basically, he got better sign up when he changed the name from "girls judo" to "womens self defense" (people like being catered to). Teaching the regular classes with him was easy, no sweat. but my first womens self defense class was a night mare. i had just begun puberty, barely started to understand that girls arent gross, and pretty much just figured out what a boner is and what it is for lmao. The first chick i got pared up to work with was this really pretty 16 year old girl named emma (mind you again im like 11 or 12 and barely spoke to females who werent related to me at this point in my life). Were doing ground work, everything is fine, until my sensei instructs us to work on submissions/ controlling an agressor on the ground, at which point emma needed to pin and then mount me. Yes, the unthinkable, unimaginable, the one thing that every dude prays never happens at the wrong moment, happened to me. I popped a woody while she was in top mount and i about died inside that day. Apologized repeatedly profusely while i sat there beet red in the face and wide eyed hoping i wasnt about to get in trouble ahahahaha. Thankfully emma was somehow understanding of the moment, and although awkward, i was able to move past it. i still look back and cringe at myself all these years later. talk about a car accident in human form. funnily enough i stuck around after and kept assisting with the womans class (without another incident thank the fucking lord), and i was lucky i did stick around. it made me comfortable with interreacting with woman as just other people, without a focus on sex orientation etc. it taught me to just have that baseline before anything else. It took so much pressure out of speaking to girls, asking them out, first dates, etc. I think alot of young men and women would benefit from the same sort of coed work.
As for the scary story. well, I was coaching the regular lessons one day, and we had this Japanese kid in our class who was just always unhinged and out of pocket. he could never be quiet, never sit still, never listen, and almost never followed instructions (im guessing everyone knows at least one of these lmao). he was known to be sent home early due to his behavioral issues. One day while i was teaching said youth regular judo lessons with my sensei, this dumb little fuck decides to run up behind me while im leading the class through warm ups and freight train trip me. Not expecting i got sent back pretty quickly, and behind me was a metal basket full of yoga blocks (we shared a studio space with a pilates/ yoga instructor). Mind you i wasn't on the mat either, i was well clear of it standing on a lightly carpet covered concrete floor. My head when straight black, and split right open on the handle of that metal basket behind me. i Woke up 5 minutes later on the floor, my head in my coaches hands, dripping blood. Had to go to the hospital and get stitched up, had a bad concussion. i couldn't even remember how i got to class that day. Thankfully i recovered fully and am fine now with no ill effects all these years later, but holy fuck was that scary. i remember specifically thinking my shirt was really wet with sweat, then touching it and looking down at my hand and just seeing red. Needless to say the kid got banned from the studio permanently, and we confiscated his belts from him. He had already injured a two other members of the dojo during previous incidents, this was the final, and very heavy straw.
I dont instruct judo anymore sadly. my sensei when through some rough times, his house burned down after a tree hit some power lines and knocked them onto his house. After that he tried to open a new Dojo, but we just werent getting enough income from sign up, and it went under. He moved to los angeles a year after that (i was about 15 or so at the time). Sadly before he got the chance to try and open a new dojo down there age came for his mind. he now has dementia and doesn't even remember me. now his son is the only person he recognizes anymore. Breaks my heart.
Miss you Sensei Richard, Dai Sensei LeBell would be proud.

Fortunately my trousers were tight and created a natural barrier. Close call. I wore my cup after that. Another class, longsword sparring. Big dude dtook a full power diagonal slash down. Here's my cringe story. I'd been in Muay Thai for years but I'm no Billy Bad Boy. I started in a JKD school that had MT and was my favorite so I trained that due to proximity to a place, moved etc. One day a guy comes in for his free trial and coach pairs him with me. Introductions, I say hi hello yada yada "Have you trained before?" and he recites every name in his Kali lineage up to Dan Inosanto. I think oh that's neat I trained 6 months JKD let's see what he knows. He proceeds to flub every drill, stopped trying stuff altogether, and then complains "This isn't how we do it over there it's more free form" and like bro it's just a drill to work on some technique not the be all end all of the system. I had said earlier that I was in similar JKD stuff and this was similar to my first school because we still had drills. I didn't get much work this day.
Anyway we get to the end of class and do the classic body conditioning where one group lines up on the wall and has their arms up for some straight punches to the body with gloves on. Nothing too aggro but not baby hands either. I let him hit first and he starts throwing the hardest hooks I ever willingly took in my life as if the coach had never said and demonstrated to throw rapid straights. We go our one minute and I somehow survive and I do as instructed on my turn. Rapid straights, not too hard but not pillows. A few seconds in I hear... "That all you got" or something like it so I drive one single right hand in there and he nearly folded. We didn't see him on any return visits.

    I've got one nasty.
I was a beginner rolling in the NoGi BJJ class.
And the guy ended up in a full mount on top of me.
He was attempting the "Mother's Milk" move which is nasty on it own (it get's worst).
I didn't panic, didn't tap and I was waiting for him to shift to try and sweep him.
He then decided to move upwards to high mount.
And the movement of him sliding upwards caught my eyelid and forced my eye open...
So my eyeball was stuck directly to his sweaty disgusting rashguard.
It was the most disgusting thing EVER.
So I started fighting with my life on the line to create space so I can close my eye. (still didn't tap though)
He used my movement to get the high S-mount and ended up submitting me with an Triangle.
I don't think he ever noticed what has happened.
And I was too shocked and disgusted to talk about it.

Unaffiliated Blackbelt saw them doing some stick defense and went over there to correct them and told them their Technic wouldn't work (it was just "go in and do Osotogari"). He told one to try it on him and while he was attacking my student with the stick, he made it a short strike and really made an effort to not get grabbed. Student committed and osotogaried the shit out of him. The BB was a big dude an every one stopped when they heard his fat ass getting hammered into the mat.

I have a new guy in my MMA gym, he is a casual "gym bro" and trains MMA only now and then for the past 2 months. He is a complete beginner and he was injured for a couple of weeks, then he came back to our gym and a few hours after training I looked at his instagram story and it was him, outside, still sweaty WITH HIS MOUTHGUARD IN AND HIS HANDS STILL WRAPPED!??!?! wtf..

I was doing some kind of spinning kicks on the matts at a krav gym. We were bare foot, it was my first time trying them and while turning/pivoting one of my toes kind of stuck in place and it broke. I kept doing the class but was very careful with everything else after that that day.

Using bleach and certain other detergents can weaken fabric and cause it to tear. I’ve seen many torn gis, even when they’re still fairly new looking.
Also, wrestling and BJJ use the “duck” under. Checkmate, nerd. 🤓 just kidding, please don’t hurt me.

there casual martial artists often buy super-cheap gi's. there is also a "summer gi" that's much lighter, but mostly for tkd and the like, where you're non-contact and just throwing kicks in the air... McDojo's also sell nearly-disposable ones a primo prices...

I get why it's annoying to have someone new critique your form, especially with a remedial take (e.g., "always keep your hands up"), but I try to take it less as a criticism of my skills and more as them trying to piece together what they're learning. It's not that your hands are especially down, just that it's the thing they are most aware of.
They're also kind of learning how to give feedback and/or how to talk about techniques as part of sparring/practice.
Obviously, it's still annoying, but I find it less frustrating when I consider that kind of feedback as them learning how to engage.

You've never had gi pants rip? I have like 8 extra gi tops because They come as a set but the pants don't hold up. Often it's just the stitching where 3 or 4 panels meet near the crotch, but sometimes the material goes. Apparently Pakistani seamstresses think we need like a 3 foot inseam or something. I wore a pair of TKD pants for judo/jujitsu until the knees wore out because they were designed better than regular gis, tho...

I started martial arts when I was 16 on an exchange to Finland. Joined a Hapkido gym close to my school. There was another guy there who started at the same time, so they made us spar together - only this guy was about 5 years older and had done TKD for years. That wouldn't necessarily be bad, but he hit mit with an overhead axe-kick right on the head. I had never seen it before and had no knowledge/tools/automatisms to defend myself with. Got off with a light concussion. Avoided that guy like the pest for the rest of my time there.

I did judo for 10 years. Most cringey situation was when I was trying to coach a kid's class and one of the older kids from a later class was there early and kept talking to me and wanted to show me like 5 different ways to break my arm. Like dude, I'm trying to pay attention to the little gremlins here.
Worst situations in terms of injuries: 1. was during a tournament. In the middle of a fight, mid throw the guy being thrown extended his arm to break the fall. Anyone with some judo experience or the ability to think would know that that's a big no no. He got to see one of his bones outside his body. So did everyone else there.
    2. situation was a guy in his 70's, extremely fit, just a little hard of hearing. He was training for his brown belt alongside us until one time during training he fell bad and broke a vertebra in his neck. It looked comparably mild, so that most of us didn't realize what happened at first but in retrospect it was scary. Luckily enough he survived and as far as I have heard he wasn't paralized but he obviously never returned to training.

Capoeira also has "ducking", but of course there's context. Most strikes are kicks so there's more room for that. But standing ducking and going to the ground is practiced frequently.

gi rip is commone becuase people buy those cheap ass "light weight summer gi's" Had one of my students named dylan come into judo lessons i one of those one day. It wasnt a problem during ground work, but the minute we went to standing the quality became super apparent. I tried to ogoshi him for a demonstration and the lapel on his gi just started ripping off like a perforated napkin. No way in hell does one of those cheap knockoffs have what it takes to support a humans mass. Dont cheap out on gi's people. a good gi will last you pretty much an entire lifetime. I still have all of mine, only like one of them still fits though lmao.

Not top tier embarrassing but I've become known in my eskrima class for spacing out during directions (I'm not trying to, my brain just decides to blip out at the most important part of the explanation every time) so every time the instructor finishes giving directions and asks us if anyone needs it repeated he almost always looks at me when he says that or someone else is like "you sure you got it D?"

Mine is I while in class training I sparred against a mother who kid was in the class as well (both were brown belts I am black belt) I went for a roundhouse kick as a bait so I can land a side kick. Even though I had no power in it the kick was so well placed she was sent into the glass windows. For the rest of the month I was made fun of as the mother beater lol
Another is when I was like 10-13 I was in the adult classes since I was too advanced for kids and I was paired with a dude who smelled like he just emerged from rotten sewage that was baking in the middle of July in Gotham. This was grappling class and we had to practice triangle chokes. As u can imagine I almost threw up 6 months of food. Thank goodness they let me sit out for the rest of the day otherwise I would have passed out

Oh funny story, this was before I did martial arts but it's still a good story.
So this was in first or second grade, I don't really remember, but we were standing in line waiting for the teacher to take us to class, and the kid in front of me did a spin jump turning towards me, dropped into a horse stance, and punched me directly in the balls. It was very painful at the time but now when I think about it it's kinda hilarious

Literally the second kick slid off the pad and drilled through my pelvis.
