I just want to say thank you for having this video up. My son was devastated when the reel's anti reverse stopped working and it effectively makes the reel useless. By using your video we were able to see the process of taking it apart and figured it out. Amazing that the anti reverse is all based on that little part of wire, which was our problem. It kept coming loose for unknown reasons. But really - thank you!
Hi, thank you for a great video. I believe I can refer back to this for several of my reels I tinker with as I fish mostly salt water Im constantly cleaning sand out. One tip I can throw in is when I deal with all these tiny little screws, if I don't have a magnetic screwdriver, I put a tiny dab of reel grease on the screwdriver tip to help pick up/hold the screw on to get in those annoying hard to get to locations. My cleaning line up mostly comes from the dollar tree in the form of qtips, wooden skewers/dowels, toothbrushes, paint brushes, Dawn, paper towels, pipe cleaners, magnets, etc, and I use very warm tap water and the sprayer at the kitchen sink along with a touch of Dawn dish liquid to get grease out of nooks and crannies(with a generous coating of oil after immediately drying parts off), but since I watched this video I'm not quite as worried about taking the reels fully apart to properly clean, especially the drag washers. thanks again for a thorough, yet not overly long and drawn out video. PS: Id watch the part where you went off camera and cleaned everything at least once, and if you ever take the caps apart Id watch that too as mine frequently get sandy and I rely on the warm water/oil method to clean them out
I have the 40 optics it's about 10 yrs old still working. Landed a 23 inch specked trout no problems. Drag is smooth and over all smooth reel. No wobble either.
I didn’t realize that you once sold reels. That’s great. No wonder you know so much about reels and their history. I had one expensive Quantum Cabo or something like that. It was the most expensive reel I ever bought. It lasted a total of 5 years and then couldn’t be repaired because the parts were not available. With what I know now I could have probably fixed it but I sent it to a reel repair shop in Charleston, SC who told me it couldn’t be repaired. I honestly think I got ripped off but who knows for sure. I don’t intend to own another Quantum at this point. I got six stitches from a razor knife once - no fun in the thumb. This reel is a normal design and probably dependable. I like the brass pinion and it seems like a decent main gear. The bearings are pretty small for a reel of this size. To me the bearings in these Quantum reels are the weakness. It certainly was in mine. Another great video - well documented. Another of your subscribers shared a really nice reel he got yesterday. It was a Peerless Bam 600 made in France. It is a PUM reel and one I definitely want to find sometime.
I still do from time to time. I keeps me current on the new product introductions and features. The Optix is OK for the price. The Boca and the Cabo were nice reels. As you notes, parts are a problem on the older ones
This reel uses the older style dog and click ratchet for the anti-reverse system. It is likely that you have a broken spring if the anti-reverse is not working - Dennis
I will see if I can do a video on that tomorrow - There is no need to take a bail apart when servicing the reel unless you have a broken spring or it is tight due to dirt, so I do not show that step in most videos - Thanks - Dennis
You said you replace a bearing that was noisy, where did you find that part. I’m going to be fishing a lot with these reels and would like to have replacement parts. Watched again. Thanks.
I ordered it off of eBay. If you have the size of the bearing, a good supplier on eBay is HPR Bearings. Search for them on eBay and then send a note to the contact the seller to get the right item - Dennis
I love to use simple green when cleaning the exteriors of reels, it's safe and not too harsh. I like to dilute the concentrate 70% water to 30% simple green. Also a toothbrush can be handy.
I got my Optix 80's in and measured the specs for sealed bearing replacement: oscillator and bottom pinion - 7x11x3; side plates and top pinion - 9x17x5. I'll run the OEM bearings until one gets rough then open the case and replace everything with sealed bearings. They are so cheap that it's silly to replace them with OEM which are unshielded, metal shielded and a plastic bushing.
I like this video I have a question I have one just like that and my pinion don't come out and need a new one and the bearing on it does that same noise I been trying to get parts and don't know where to get it
You need to soak the collar around the main bearing with a penetrating oil and let it sit to do its thing. If you are having trouble pulling up, put the rotor and nut back on and use that as a knob to strengthen your grip while pulling up - Dennis
I don't have one of those in the shop to determine the bearing size. You can contact quantum for reel parts. Follow this link www.quantumfishing.com/partsfinder thanks for asking - Dennis
Not sure if anyone gives a shit but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times then you can stream pretty much all of the latest series on InstaFlixxer. I've been watching with my gf for the last few months =)
Hello, Is there a source for the dimensions of all the bearings and bushings in the 60 and 80 size Optix reels? I know the specs for the Optix 10 size but I need the other sizes before I leave on a fishing tour soon. PS, The larger reels have not arrived yet so I can't get bearing/bushing specs from them.
I am not aware of a source and Quantum does not sell parts directly. In fact, quantum was recently sold to Rather Products, so that further complicates the search. Mikes reel repair in Canada has support. You may want to try connecting with them. Here is the link www.mikesreelrepair.com
No. It sounds like you have a faulty anti-reverse mechanism. Check to see if you have an over-ride switch. If you do and it is in the correct position and does not hold, then you need to service the A/R clutch - Dennis
Depends on what the skip is. It could be the drags, it could be the anti-reverse or it could be gear damage. Hard to say without seeing the reel. It can be saved, but you need to determine the cause - Thanks
@@2ndChanceTackle when I catch a fish I’m trying reel it in. The handle just skip. Spinning. With a noise. It won’t reel in the line. Bigger the fish. Hard to reel in.
I don't know a source for the Optix parts. I think you will need to buy the bearings based on size. Get the measures in MM and then use a bearing supplier like Bocabearings.com to get the replacements - Dennis
Can you send a picture of the reel side plate and the handle hole. Also - is the handle broken or missing? If it is broken, send a picture of what is left of it. send to 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com - Dennis
A good disassembly/assembly video, with a few problems. You wiped the grease off the shaft and never applied new grease. The bearings needed the grit flushed out, or replaced. Grit with fresh oil / grease is commonly known as lapping compound. Lapping compound inside a ball bearing is not good for the bearing. The demo after assembly indicates problems. The reel should spin freely after maint. This reel stops spinning quickly. Sorry Dude, just trying to be helpful.
Grease evaporates and takes on micro sands and dirt - That's why the reels should be serviced annually, regardless of how many times a year it is ut fishing - Dennis

Just wondering if you have any pointers on how to get the handle out of its stuck in there.
Try a penetrating oil to loosen the old greases and dirt that is jamming it

do you know if this handle assembly will work in the Zebco hawg seeker spinning reel?
