The sunroof also releases and can be removed. Just turn the key to acc and retract the arms, if that doesn't work you can wind it back manually from the rear hatch area
It can be opened by loosening the lock g rods behind the carpet in rear cargo area. It's a pain to get to, but atleast to disengage locking mechanism to open trunk lid . Then remove the lock assembly take to a locksmith to extract broken key. Or get online buy new lock/ignition and key set so will have same key for both. But check also fuse for hatch release/ relay. It should open the hatch since can't use key. ( if still electrically functional) located in driver's side floor on side wall. Below hood release lever
For the key that broke off on the rear truck release, get a fresh stick from a hot glue gun heat the end with a lighter and stick the end onto the broken key. It should come right out I’ve done it on an ignition
Owned a white 944 for 12 years. If there was ever a car that was greater than the sum of it's parts it was the 944! You tackled a big issue with the clutch plate. The 944 is essentially a car built around the clutch! lol! I love watching the videos on this car because you are doing all the same things I did to get my car road worthy. Keep up the good work!

That manual alone I've seen priced at $160. A rare and really good thing to have. Advice from a long term 944 owner on operation. Feel free to ignore it, or you may already know it. If you start it warm it all the way up, 6 to 7 miles. Keeping the revs below 4000. After that try to rev it all the way out at least once. You sound happy to drive it. Drive it a lot. Like most of its kin it was designed to be used, often. Or things dry out and deteriorate Which brought up the thought of the cam/water pump belt. I don't remember it being mentioned. Very important. And I speak as one who has seen three water pumps installed into mine. It maybe old and brittle, 30,000 mi changes are specified. Find a nice twisty road, enjoy.
Damn, I got an 1985 in 1988 and mechanics in the San Fernando Valley would murder you for everything that you needed done back then. This really brings back old but, good memories. Great job guys, almost makes me want to try and find a project. Keep up the good work.
Super happy to see you working on this 944. My family had a 1982 Porsche 924 in the mid-80's, and it was a lot of fun. The only thing my dad griped about at the time was, you guessed it, the lack of power. But he loved how it handled. Unfortunately, I took it out when I was 16, and totaled it on a large boulder/tree combination. Still feel guilty about it, and miss the car as well.
So fun watching JR bring this car back. It's very good looking car from the past & I'm glad it's getting a longer life. Hope it sticks around for a while.
I pulled an old Cadillac out of a field that hadn’t run in like 10 years. It was full of spiders and I did the same thing you did with the Raid fogger. Ended up finding like 3 or 4 dead black widows and at least 50 other dead spiders in the car.
Man, I am very glad to see your channel grow. You make better content every time I watch a new video, and I am glad your continue on going for it. Keep it up!
Man, that robot mower looks like it's killing it on yard duty! Front yard looks good. Oh yeah, the 944 is pretty awesome. :). Love these videos and seeing the channel grow.
Oh man, to find a Porsche like that for $500 that not only starts but with a tune-up and a few other fixes becomes a car you can drive again! Wish I had that kind of luck! Something to be said about older cars, before the advent of so many electronics under the hood that a person can actually fix many problems themselves. Have watched too many videos of late model Porsche/BMW/Mercedes/Audi performance cars that quickly become a nightmare and a money pit when they develop a problem.
WatchJR guys. the hatch can be opened three ways. 1) push the electrical switch in the drivers foot-well just in front of door. if that does not work 2) Crawl into the back area, Pull Carpet along the back vertical area down, find in the middle where external lock comes through there is a a lever mechanism, TWIST IT HARD. it will pull the TWO Rods that release pins holding hatch down. 3) if all goes to sh*T, while your have crawled under the hatch area you will have to loosen the 10mm nuts (two per side) holding the PIN catches on either side. Then , and yank and twiddle with the release rods to get PINS to release.
Thats awesome! Glad you got it going! I was wondering when you would figure out that the roof panel comes off. That added a whole new level of fun to the 944. I guess you gotta get the hatch open so you have a place to store the roof panel.
Just for a mental note. The coil cover could get moisture in It and cause arcing which will make the car not run properly. I had this problem with a 79 280ZX. I took it to a shop that specialized in those cars and the first thing the mechanic did was pull the cover off of the coil and threw it in the trash and right in front of me. Cranked the car and problem solved. He didn't even charge me either. Enjoying the channel.
I have an '85.5. I can't remember the cost for the sunroof seal but it wasn't that bad. It's been forever since I replaced it. I drove it for over 15years and it's been sitting for the last 15yrs I think. Sad but I have the same Haynes manual and it's a life saver. good luck!!
Very clean interior ... just have an eye on your sunroof position sensor it’s under the dome light.. the cables enjoy corroding and will drop the locks out of the sunroof
Great job love 944, easiest way to get broken key out. Get a tiny drill bit screw it in between the side of the key and lock, when it bites into key just pull it out and key will come with it.
What an amazing car.. and for $500.00 - couldn't go wrong. Reminds me of my amazing ride I purchased in Feb this year, 1995 Chrysler Le Baron convertible LX. Bought her for $200 bucks.. just got the convertible top working again. As with your ride I'm having a blast driving her around - she needs a bit more cosmetic work . that'll happen soon .Always enjoying your videos, keep up the awesome work... Brad from Vernon British Columbia 🇨🇦
Looks great; put a dashmat on the dash to cover up the cracks but also to eliminate the glare on the windshield. Watch your offset with the wheels. The rear can tolerate 25mm offset but the front needs to be in the 50 range
I had a 1984 Porsche 944 with black leather and tan carpet. Mine came with Fuchs Style wheels which I had painted red to match the car. Not fast but could out handle anything. Note: The sunroof will start leaking if you use it at that age, and I'm surprised the $$$ motor for the sunroof still works. My sunroof failed after three years. Great car have fun.
Save a few bucks and get one while you can still find hooptie-ish running examples! The Porsche water-coolers have been creeping up in value, but there's still plenty of life in tons of non-collector examples! There's lively internet communities, they're easier to work on than you might think (and if you don't do your own work, pretty much any mechanic won't sweat at working on one) and there's simply no better balanced sports car out there for the money - seriously, that 50/50 weight distribution is a thing to behold. If you're looking cheap, try to find a manual (obvs) 1983-1985.5 in stock condition. That first gen with the carryover 924 interior has a bit less to go wrong with it, AND you can move the tachometer into the middl, where it belongs! The 944 doesn't take to mods well, and something like an aftermarket exhaust is an easy indicator of one that doesn't have much life left in it. These things are true go-carts, and so much fun to own and drive daily.
@@paulsz6194 I would disagree. I think any of them are worth owning as long as they have a 5 speed. They are stupid cheap to buy, even with under 100k miles on it a clean example is probably less than $3k.
D Palmer yes, five speed is definitely the way to to go, but a 924 or early 944 just don’t have enough power. It would really have to be a 924 Turbo or a 944S /S2 / Turbo.
I LOVE Karlyn/STI spark plug wires. I put them on pretty much all my cars. The price for performance is great. Plus they come in blue for all my Japanese vehicles. :D

You can open the relay, use some sand paper (not super abrasive, something light) to run it through the contacts. Boom relay fixed. From a 87 4runner owner who didn't want to buy a turn signal relay for $20+.
I owned an '86 944. Great car - very well built and engineered, and handled better out of the box than any of my roughly three dozen BMWs. The downside was a mechanical complexity not entirely in scale with its actual performance potential, and relatively low power output. Porsche's first go at a water cooled car (924 was VW-engined). Would still love to own another... but next one will be a CGT clone with LS power.
Thanks JRGo, it's going to be so satisfying to see you clean this baby up. Oh, and get some good rubber all the way around. Can't wait. Congrats on the purchase. Great content.

Great car. Tell you a pro tip. Don’t ever leave the metal wiper arms in the upward position while changing wiper blades. If it accidentally snapped back downwards it will crack your windshield. Always place it back down slowly when you walk away to get your new blade in case someone accidentally bumps it.
"this covers the coil all neat and pretty" ... installs filthy coil cover. C'mon man, budget another twenty minutes during the tasks to clean stuff before you reinstall it. Same with battery tray. Hit the whole cavity with simple green or whatever before dropping the battery back in. hope you do a full on paint correction and detail on that 944. Press on!
I had an 86 944 S You need to really inspect the front BALL JOINTS ! They are not really serviceable and replaced by getting new lower control arms ! Car was awesome in the handling department ! Best car ever in the twisties !!!
Mirror of my $600 drag home car! All the little things that make it better until it is just a really good car! Spiders took a while as I had them pop out of unusual places every time I washed or drove. The little fellow living under the passenger mirror almost became a pet.
JR, have you driven any other 944s or members of the Porsche water-cooler family? Going through the twisties with a manual is one of the best driving experiences for the money - my $2000 1983 944 is still probably my favorite car I've ever had.. Glad you're enjoying this motor and giving it a new lease on life! It seems like yours was kept stock, which was a great sign that there'd still be plenty of life in it.
Super excited to see this car come together. Long live the cheap hoopties!

You need to really inspect the front BALL JOINTS ! They are not really serviceable and replaced by getting new lower control arms ! Car was awesome in the handling department ! Best car ever in the twisties !!!
Interesting how you took the Raid bomb approach instead of burning it to the ground. Bold move.
