PUTTING A CLUTCH In An AUTOMATIC Porsche 944 *Am I Crazy?*

  • The $500 1987 Porsche 944 is running, but now we're tackling the reason it was parked in the first place. We're replacing the $1,693 rubber flywheel with a rubber center clutch out of a manual transmission car. This works because the clutch and flywheel versions were meant to sit inside the same bellhousing and drive the torque tube. The clutch is permanently applied and should never slip.

    Yay! You passed the test! Lol. I replaced the clutch in an '81 931 in my garage on a dirt floor with no lift. That was years ago when the only assistance was the 2 other guys in the world (one in Australia and one in California) who owned the same car and had gone through it before who sent advice by email from the old porschephiles email reflector. Can't remember the trick to removing the torque tube from the front but I seem to recall it wasn't easy. Maybe worked through the inspection hole and the starter hole. Don't remember. I do recall driving it to a friend's lift to reinstall the exhaust because by that point the frustration was too great. Just could not get the thing back up where it had to go. It sat still for a long time waiting for parts, so without the exhaust, oily smoke was coming out the naca duct in the hood. You could hear the bark of the engine through the loud whine of the turbo. Got lots of attention at stoplights. ;-) I remember something about rubber centered clutches in the 924S and the 944s. People replaced them with metal components as a routine operation. Never had anything to do with any automatics. Can't recall anybody on the old mail reflector who drove one. Fun to watch somebody else suffer to do it and to realize what liars people are who say it can be done in anything under a long full day ;-) Most shops in those days wouldn't touch it. To tie up a hoist for one and potentially two days would run up a bill that most customers wouldn't be happy to pay. So, they would just quote a ridiculous price (I was seriously quoted $5,000 by one shop) or tell you flat out, "no". SO, we get the joy of doing it alone. Lol.

      Most people who don't have a real interest in cars, would just see a repair bill for more than they think the car is worth, so will scrap the car, no matter what make and model. They won't know what it is worth in parts, or have the room or skill the break the car up and sell the bits. It's why thousands of classic cars in the UK disappeared when the Government introduced a scrappage scheme. Go check the scheme out

    Some of the high end stuff has a one year shelf life. We kept it in the fridge and I tested 2yr old kept in fridge vs new for pull out force on a joint and it was close. Main difference was it seemed you need to mix the two parts at room temp not straight out of the fridge.

    Love JB Weld. Had a friend with a Le Mans that chewed three teeth of the flywheel outside of Vegas. Molded a big glob of JB Weld on it and waited overnight sleeping in the car. Hey JR, you shouldn't go about using solder on that O2 sensor. Apparently they work by passing ambient oxygen through the wire somehow and using that as a reference. Soldering breaks that channel. Either that or the metals become a thermocouple and mess with the readings. Either way, there's some literature online and Bosch mentions using their "Posilock" connectors and those alone. Also, that speed sensor from the broken bracket? The one that doesn't go anywhere? You can throw it out. It was originally a debug tool for Porsche mechanics but nobody has the tool for them anymore.

      what kills me about car makers is they put things in that have no right to be in a vehicle that WILL fail then make it extremely difficult to get to. I will cite the cam phasers and oil pump in the ford 5.4L 3V. The oil pump requires you to pull everything off the front of the engine including the timing chains. Know what worked for decades? oil pump bolted to the block inside the oil pan. Remove oil pan: 30 mins. Remove oil pump and replace: 10 mins 30 mins back together. Now? 8 hrs and it's not like it's an improvement....they are the number 1 reason that the first 3 years phasers and cams failed due to lack of oil pressure.

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

"nevermind that, look at the digital configurable gauge cluster, isn't it pretty"?

    Nice fix, it’s a big job, I did one once. You dont need to drop the rear suspension. Remove those 9 bolts from the starter hole, remove the bell housing bolts then the flex plate can be wiggled out, then you can remove the c clip and slide the shaft back far enough.

    • @danmazz8733

    • @c1d2e
      @c1d2e 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danmazz8733 It can be done in a weekend if you really push it and don't have any snags.
      It's been a few years since I did one. Lift the car up on all four corners and support. Remove exhaust pipe. You'll need a manual flywheel, pressure plate and clutch disc. Make sure the flywheel has the sensor stud. Your just connecting the torque tube shaft to the engine with the above, what the rubber flex plate used to do.
      The problem is you can't slide the torque tube back far enough to do it all so you have to drop the transaxle. I didn't drop it all the way just slid it back and tipped it down some. Then the torque tube will slide back far enough to get the old flex plate out and install the clutch pack. I used a second hand original rubber puck style clutch but either will work. It's a wrestle to get the bell housing off because the transmission lines run down the back of it preventing it from popping off the back of the alignment pins but it can be done. Remove the ref sensors before this or you will break them.
      It's nice to have a helper because that transaxle and torque tube are heavy.
      You might want to replace the rear main seal while your in there. You'll get it, just go slow and take a break if you get frustrated!

So I bought a manual transmission car and swapped the manual trans axle , torque tube , clutch and flywheel to the automatic car because the manual car was wrecked. Your alright as long as it doesn't have a carb......😁 Exotic vehicle manufacturers do exotic things and probably why I never ventured on that side of the isle. Detroit Iron for me.

    Found this on Pelicanparts.com forum in relation to the snap ring. "About that snap ring... My 12-year-old son got it in less than 20 min. We studied PET and learned the key was removing the lock bolt from the drive shaft collar first. Then slide the remains of the flex damper to the rear, exposing the C-clip. By the time I was ready to go down to the shop and see how he was getting on, he had come back triumphantly carrying the dead flex disc. And he emphatically stated the bolt was NOT 6mm inner hex. 8? " Ya just needed a 12 yo to help ya! And why ? Because when we are young we go by the "what can it hurt" logic. As opposed to the adult "We gotta learn everything we can" logic. I learned this when my brother came over one day to borrow a tech manual I had out in the garage. He never used manuals. I got scared. We just threw things together and went with it. If he is coming to me, we had hit that "adult logic".

    Love it had one when younger drove it until the timing went... Spent 1000 on a red one with 143k in 2001. Fun little car. Engine was not savable lol.

    Should have just JB welded the flywheel too. Stronger than steel!
    Also... Your JB weld will last pretty much forever if you store each half in a baggie. I've used stuff that was ancient, and went through several freeze/thaw cycles in the shop, and it was just fine. Biggies FTW.

    Damn my boss has one of these in almost the same condition, but its a 5 speed. For some reason porsche decided to give some of these cars a pink/magenta color carpet and brown seats (?) its funny though.. but he has some wide tires and some deep dish wheels with 0 offset, staggered setup and he actually takes it to a track.. you'd be surprised, just as i was when i saw it with my own eyes the day i went to the track with him, that this thing can actually keep up with new 911's, m3's, c43/63 and audi rs(x) cars...

    The white wires on the O2 are just for the heater. They are not polarized and can be soldered to any other white wire. You can't mix them up.
