    I've done 3 r134a conversions. The first two blew the compressors up within 3000 miles. There's no way to flush the residual oil and debris out of them. My latest conversion has been great. Replaced the compressor, worn out condenser, orifice tube, and the drier. Then washed out the hoses, muffler, and evaporator, and threw it all back together with all new oil. Works great. Remember that the old oil is really bad in an r134a system, and can make a lot of pretty glitter in the system.

    In the old days when R134A conversions were common, we used to call these "death kits". They give you the service ports, a receiver, and some supposedly universal oil that is compatible with the old mineral oil in R12 systems. I prefer to pull the compressor and drain the old mineral oil. My experience with conversions is it works OK in large systems like trucks and tractors where the components were way oversized. But in cars the results are often pretty lackluster. R12 systems operate at much lower pressures, so often you need a different expansion valve or orifice tube to make them work. Plus the rubber hoses and o-rings used in R12 systems were not made to withstand PAG oil.

    • @jeffreyrigged
      @jeffreyrigged 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep. my bronco lasted a week before it blew one and drained out so i wasted 50 bucks or so. orifice tube should work fine but i would replace it with new one since they are about a dollar or two. now if you have poa valve you need to re calibrate it or buy a conversion valve that has the relay. the 80s cars have relays so really you just need to change all the orings to green and use the conversion fittings.

    Hey , love your TH-cam videos of all the various "rides" you have featured. I have "rescued "and brought home a 1995 Chrysler Le Baron convertible back in Feb15 of this year.It needed some serious TLC and also a major clean out of the cars interior as the floor board was covered in garbage ie take out cups/lids , paper bags... very disgusting. The body is in decent shape other than a dent on drivers fender by the door, replaced the relay switch for the convertible top- now it works awesome. On the bright side shes a 3.0 V6 with 150,000 km on the motor... awesome cruiser for our hot summers here in the Okanagan Valley.. thanks for the great uploads , really enjoy them. Get ready for the compressor to go! The oil for r22 and 134 are NOT compatible, and mixing them does not go well for the compressor. ( I learned the hard way) A correct conversion involves pulling the compressor, and draining all the oil out of it, and flushing it. Then, put in proper oil in the compressor, and add oil into the lines.

    I see JR doing all of the work here, and very little by the Car Ninja

      JR works on his cars (plus, it looked like the Car Ninja was busy, possibly with a customer). However, if you want to see Car Ninja working on a car, watch Hoovie's videos!

    As a 944 owner, would suggest you join the PCA. You’d learn some interesting facts. Such as the AC was a horrible underperformer. The AC system for the US would not keep cold in warmer climates. Also a large # of Porsche parts have a VW part #; parts are cheaper that way.

    Shout out to the Car Ninja for coming through w/the A/C save! As for that Maserati - swap a #Hemi into it. It'll need some mods to make it compatible, but it'll be more reliable, never mind the lifter issue - that's easily solved.

    Don't who the guy was who tried to pull the dent out but if you heat up the metal with a heat lamp then hit it with boiling water. Then try to pull the dent out it should pull out a heck of a lot easier. Simple trick that the companies use that removes them every day.
