    I think the good part of having records on the scoreboard is if you go back months or years later for the highlights for whatever reason you don't have to lookup exactly where both teams were in that moment

    This is the 2nd time in recent years FOX debuted their new NFL scoreboard in a Super Bowl, with the 1st time being Super Bowl 54 (ironically, the Chiefs also won that Super Bowl). FOX only tweaked the 2014-16 scoreboard in Super Bowl 51 to where it's more 2D than what it was before, so that doesn’t really count as a change to me.
    CBS and NBC tend to introduce their new NFL scoreboards whenever they host the Super Bowl, but for some odd reason, CBS decided to keep the scoreboard from Super Bowl 50 when they broadcasted Super Bowl 53. They finally changed their scoreboard in Super Bowl 55, but it looks like a more 2D version of the Super Bowl 50/53 scoreboard than anything else. I love the new touchdown animation, though.
    As for ESPN, I was never the biggest fan of their NFL scoreboards, but I absolutely love their newest scoreboard that debuted in the Bills-Jets game. I think ABC shares the same NFL scoreboard as ESPN, but I could be wrong. ESPN and ABC are set to host Super Bowl 61, so we’ll have to wait and see if their scoreboard will change for that big game.

      Excellent post. Just when I think I’m alone in being a fan of noticing the smallest details of the game, the internet connects us all lol.
      I was surprised that fox went with the “debut in the Super Bowl” model after years of not doing so. I personally loved the modified one they used for SB51. It was much easier to read than the one used from 2014-2016.
      One addition I wanted to make: FOX debuted a new scorebug in 1998 (my personal favorite). They then used a modified shinier? Version ONLY for Super Bowl 33. Then reverted to the regular season/1998 playoffs version for the 1999 season. Then in 2000 used a different modified version which was more silver than grey.

    When the nfl switched Monday/Sunday night football before 2006, they decided to focus on Sunday night as the prime slot of the week.
    Prior to that, MNF was the feature game of the week on abc. ESPN’s SNF had the “B tier” matchups (though ESPN’s MNF had some rough scheduling in the 2010s)

  • @Montera15
    @Montera15 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    One thing you may notice on these graphics, especially CBS is they're making and optimizing them more for digital and web viewing; such as the recent logo update ABC did... that's probably part of why CBS went flat instead of 3D... NBC usually has good graphics, and theirs is OK. I think the circle thing is an attempt to emulate the moon because it's at night... with FOX, when the graphic comes in & out, you notice the eyes of the "Cleatus robot" before the score pops up for a brief moment, and same in reverse when it goes away for stats or a commercial block, so that's where the odd shape comes. ESPN is nice, but they just need to shrink it down a bit. I don't care if the black bar goes side to side, it just look like the fonts and shapes are too big!! Only other thing is that I like that they're at least going back to a 3D type look, and I think that CBS should do the same; they're probably due for an update within the next year or 2 anyway.

    Maybe nostalgia is clouding my judgement, but I think score bugs peaked around 2009. FOX’s still spread across the top of screen and just had a very distinct ‘FOX’ look about it - albeit it didn’t show timeouts, so that would be one change I would make to it today. CBS introduced their first ‘wide’ bug centered at the top of the screen that year but still paired it with the old NFL on CBS graphics that were awesome (remember the logo beating like a heart?). NBC’s SNF bug seemed futuristic at the time and looked great. I would love to see an NFL season where those three networks’ bugs from that era are restored in some capacity, albeit with a few minor adjustments to make them ‘modern.’ The only bug from today I would keep is ESPN’s. It’s pretty slick and gives me vibes of the old SNF bugs. I would also restore the logo branding of ‘NFL on CBS’ and ‘NFL on FOX.’ The current logos displaying ‘CBS NFL’ and ‘FOX NFL’ have always looked weird and out of place to me.

    I honestly don't mind the current Amazon TNF scoreboard, I think it looks pretty sleek. My only issue with it is that there is no indicator as to which team is on offense. This might seem like an insignificant detail, but I like having some sort of possession indicator on the scoreboard.
    I agree that the FOX one looks clunky as hell and that the circle for the NBC one kinda ruins it. The previous scoreboard version for both FOX and NBC were some of my favorite scoreboards ever, so I'm kinda sad that their replacements are so disappointing.

  • @tyvekhomewrap9164
    @tyvekhomewrap9164 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I would disagree and say the NBC one is the best. Not only does the circle display a ton of info (clock, play clock, quarter), but it also adds a center that the board can be focused around, which I think looks super clean. I like how the rings not only display possession but also indicate the remaining play clock and light up yellow when there's a flag. In addition, I resent the notion that displaying records is a bad idea. Not only does it save me from having to google their records, but it is also nice when watching replays of prior years' games to gauge teams' performance at that point.

    A note on the ESPN scoreboard is that the "down & to go" indicator (where "Monday Night Football" is on your screen grab) has the same team color "lighting" that the logo bars do, so you can tell who has the ball at a glance during a sideline or commentator cutaway without looking for some kind of arrow indicator.
    As for the broadcasters pimping themselves (TNF, Monday Night Football, the NBC peacock, etc.) that's never going away. Any time anyone screengrabs one of their broadcasts, that's free advertising.

    One of the benefits of the record being on the scoreboard is that it tells a story. When you watch a highlight in a compilation 10 years from now you won’t need an commentator to tell you why a certain game was an upset.

    The SNF scoreboard reeks of MNF from 2006. It had not quite a circle but like a squircle with the team stuff jutting out the side just like this SNF board. Also the old long bar was better, but that's because I prefer short and wide scoreboards and for a while in like 2017-18 there was only this and it was pristine, chef's kiss.

    I wish they would get rid of all graphics or have a button you can at least turn them off. With all the devices it is so unnecessary to have some big score or graphics take up the screen. Problem with the ones at the top are during the play if the operator would zoom in or out it would go right through the middle of the play. Bottom is better but they just need a little simple one in the bottom corner or something.

    The circle for Sunday night football while showing possession like he said seems like it’s a play clock, because it is. If you watch the line for possession ticks down with the play clock and turns red in the last few seconds.
