15:06 I miss when Sportsnet (Canada) had the strike zone box in their scoreboard that showed where all the previous pitches for that at-bat were, and then if there was a close call it would rotate the graphic to show a 3-D representation of the zone and then show the path the ball took to go through/past it! It was where the big SN logo is now. That was definitely a unique layout.
when sportsnet had that strike zone box (not the one currently over the plate) it was on the left side of the screen in a separate graphic. The SN logo on the current one replaced team logos on the previous version that was used for a couple seasons prior
The root sports / att Sportsnet I think is quite good. You just said the color is weird and moved on! During the game occasional stats or tidbits will pop up out of the top or side of the score board. It's small and it tells you what you need to know. When someone hits a HR, instead of just updating the score, it'll wipe the whole board and do a HR graphic for whatever team, and wipe back with the new score. Very cool I think.
I'm a Houston Astros fan so yes I do like that scorebug. My least favorite is FOX. He didn't even talk about the giant 3D bases that look like pizza boxes.
I like the Bally Sports scoreboard. A lot of information all presented at the bottom of the screen. I hate watching games and not knowing the pitch count, how many hits has the batter had in the game, and their batting average. I'd rather be overloaded with information at the bottom of the screen then not having it at all.
Fox's newest scoreboard is a downgrade from the previous version and what the regional FSN channels used. Clean, simple, and effective. Just gimme the inning, score, count, pitcher/pitch count, better/average, outs, and bases. I don't need any floating pixels in the background or team graphics nonsense.
The Sportsnet broadcasts for the Blue Jays implemented a pitch clock only a few days into spring training, it looks really nice and is honestly seamless in the scoreboard.
My absolute favorite scoreboard was the 2004 Fox scoreboard that was used in the Red Sox Cards world series. Not that it was the cleanest or anything, but the sound effects that it had just made everything seem way more epic than it should have been.
I guess that I like the simplicity of the ones you rate as F. Do agree that Bally sports is too much, should not take the whole bottom of the screen. I really think that the future should be with smart tvs to simply just hit an info button on the remote and it will display a custom scorebox based on how you input it on the app.
I know Fubo has something like this where if you press a button it will pull up extra stats. Altough it is limited to that game, season stats don't show up
MASN's scoreboard isn't that bad to me. But please do a rant on the overwhelming amount of ads we see during TV baseball games. Having them in the panels throughout the ballparks and commercial breaks are one thing, but now it's right before the next batter most times. They're on the pitcher's mound, and soon they'll be on the jerseys!! It's one of the reasons why I listen to the Orioles on the radio now.
Apple TV presentation was great from a camera quality and broadcast standpoint. There’s no better camera work on a baseball broadcast than Apple does. The score bug is a nod to the simplicity of the Apple ecosystem, it could use some work but it’s simple by design.
The MLB Network and NHL Network seem to have the same Broadcast Package with their graphics. And I agree wholeheartedly that both networks should modernize their presentation.
The Fox one actually looks like a modernized form of one of their late 90s/early 2000s models, with some slight modifications. Part of it to me looks clunky, Root Sports and Apple TV look too basic (Apple TV is a little worse), MASN looks really out of place, NESN and SLA doesn’t look too bad, and YES Network is pretty solid. SN is okay to me alongside TBS but ESPN I would say is the best one. No pun intended but none of them really have a home run look to them that’s the extreme wow factor.
Apple tv scoreboard is the nicest looking and they do have hd cameras but the announcers the probability bs and having to get a sketchy internet stream make it lame when they have the game. Fox fake 3d balloon looking scoreboard is the worst. Thankful for my team's announcers they might sound funny but they do a good job: passion + knowledge.
The one from Fox looks like they’re trying to modernize something from the late 90s/early 2000s but add their own twist to it. They had one where it would be vertical at the bottom right corner with the teams but the bases would be around the outside of it. Their current one of course horizontal but with the bases inside of it, sort of like the inverse of that design.
I honestly love the Apple TV scoreboard . and I’m not even a huge fan of that type of design choice or aesthetic or idk the word but yea I really like it

You echoed my sentiments on the dot about Bally Sports. I would also add these annoying screeching sounds they make when an additional graphic appears. it's like nails on a chalkboard. And who else is doing sound effects on theirs graphics anymore? It's like Fox back in 2003. Also, Bally is the ONLY one who doesn't show ANY outs anywhere then there are zero outs. I mean, if there are no outs yet, we can see on other networks, you know, 0 OUT or dark dots. But Bally won't show up where the outs are until there are any, which are ... located where home plate is.. wow. Final thought on the pitch clock.. with ALL the space the entire bottom row, they chose the absolute worst place ever to put a timer: between the bases... wow.
TBS scoreboard is so tiny I need a magnifying glass to look at what the teams and etc. it just looks too cramped maybe if they made it bigger and slightly spread it around it would look better

you were a little rough on Bally's , they tried to put all the info onto one line. vs like ESPN and others that add an extra lower "bottom line" graphic + a score bug. and all networks show the list of umpires etc at the beginning of the game.
surprised you talked down about NESN and SNLA , they are small so they don't take up much space especially on the 4K feed. but again all these other network add an additional "bottom line" graphic + the scorebug... where as Ballys does it all on 1 line.
I hope they don't add a pitch clock to the scoreboard. When I see it in spring training, I find it distracting. The umpire will let us know if there is a violation.
How many teams or networks have superimposed advertisements on the batters eye or along the base or foul line? Sportsnet in Canada may win with their scorebug (or scoreboard as you prefer) but they lose big time with their annoying batters eye ads. Whenever I try to follow a deep fly ball to the outfield, my eyes are drawn to a giant Home Hardware or Rogers, or Honda, or Dairy Queen, or Westjet ad superimposed on the batters eye. Overall, I find Sportsnet's on screen presentation annoying.
My Grades: ESPN: B+ It includes all the info you need, would be nice to have pitcher's name and batter's but it's okay. It's a little small but I can deal with it. No need for three circles dedicated to outs tho. NBC: B+ Similar to ESPN's, but it includes batter and pitcher while dropping team records. Not too small and aesthetically pleasing. TBS: C+ Way too small. Annoying to squint when you are sitting on a couch 15 feet away. It looks too organized, everything doesn't need it's own little box. Batter's name and AVG would be nice, team records too. TBS logo completely unnecessary and of course it's the most legible thing on the entire scoreboard. Gets the job done but I don't like it. MLB Network: B Minimalist in comparison to some of the others, missing a lot of unnecessary but nice-to-have things such as logos, team records, batter and pitcher, ect. I do appreciate the pitch speedometer however. WBC logo (normally an MLBN logo) is way too big, it's not really needed at all. FOX Sports: A- Aesthetically pleasing, fits the vibe of baseball. Team records and batter would be nice, but they make up for it with the baserunning, home run, and team logo animations. I like that it's flashy when something important happens. Apple TV: D+ I'm appalled that MLB allowed this to happen. It's following the whole modernizing logos trend we see today. no batters, pitchers, team records. just the bare minimum, logos don't even take up their alloted space. Colors are incredibly dull and the apple logo just pisses me off. The last font you use for sports broadcasting is Arial. Bally: B It takes up more space that it looks like, but I'm fine with that. It's out of the way and that's what matters. I appreciate that batter and pitcher is included, but i'd like team records as well. team logos and score takes a lot more space than needed, but it at least fits the aesthetic. I also like that I get to see other ongoing games to the right. AT&T SportsNet: B- It barely gets the job done and it's ugly. only the key info, nothing else. as i keep repeating, I want team records, and the batter too. Marquee: B Similar issue to TBS, but I give them credit for omitting the company logo. MASN: B+ Aesthetically pleasing with good colors and font, but it's lacking that extra info I keep talking about. not terrible. NESN: B Again, good font but can we please stop with the boxes everywhere? I just want it to look fluid. also, poor color choice and no logos? what about batters and record? I give em credit for pitch-by-pitch info. Spectrum SportsNet LA: B- Guys, NO MORE BOXES. Batter and Info is nice, but no pitcher info? again, no records either. logos are well placed tho. YES Network: A Someone finally did it. They included the pitcher AND batter, WITH PITCH-BY-PITCH info, AND NO BOXES. On top of that, the colors switch around depending on which team is batting. btw, the pitch-by-pitch info flashes up where the pitcher's name is after each pitch. Great, simple color choice and great logo placement. Brownie points for Micheal Kay. Toronto SportsNet: A- Good font and colors. missing logos but it's made up for by the exceptional organization. also batter and pitcher brought a smile to my face.

Wayne Randazzo was great in the games he did play by play for Apple TV games at least. But yeah the rest of the announcing lineup was lame last year.

Colors are incredibly dull and the apple logo just pisses me off. The last font you use for sports broadcasting is Arial.

It takes up more space that it looks like, but I'm fine with that. It's out of the way and that's what matters. I appreciate that batter and pitcher is included, but i'd like team records as well. team logos and score takes a lot more space than needed, but it at least fits the aesthetic. I also like that I get to see other ongoing games to the right.

Someone finally did it. They included the pitcher AND batter, WITH PITCH-BY-PITCH info, AND NO BOXES. On top of that, the colors switch around depending on which team is batting. btw, the pitch-by-pitch info flashes up where the pitcher's name is after each pitch. Great, simple color choice and great logo placement. Brownie points for Micheal Kay.

Good font and colors. missing logos but it's made up for by the exceptional organization. also batter and pitcher brought a smile to my face.
I agree with you on the fox sports scoreboard. It’s by far the best, not even close.

Umm, this guy isn't as sharp as he thinks. Dodgers SportsNet LA and Mets SNY are two totally different networks, not a single thing about either network is the same.
