The Two Sides of Immortal Wisdom: Highlander's Darius and Methos

  • During Highlander the Series' run in the 90's, it played with multiple concepts and angles on the different shades of immortality. No more so than on the trope of the ancient and mystical immortal wiseman. Deeper in wisdom and knowledge than any other person of their kind. The show uses two characters to display the nuances this takes, Darius and the fan favorite, Methos.

To be honest, when I was a kid and first stumbled across Highlander: The Series, I kind of secretly wanted to be Duncan MacLeod. However, now that I'm in my early 40s and have read more than is probably the average of first hand historical sources, I find myself more and more identifying with Methos.
It's very hard not to be cynical when you can see the people around you making the same damn mistakes and doing the same things you've seen them make before and expecting things to turn out differently.
To borrow a phrase, if I may be honest, "I've heard Bora Bora is nice this time of year."

I think because you dislike the character you misread Methos utterly. He ISNT random, EVER, nor does he pretend to be a “wise man” or “sage”. He doesn’t want people looking up to him because he doesn’t want to take the responsibility for them, because he KNOWS that every person is responsible for themselves. And the quote wasn’t that he didn’t believe he deserved to live but that he couldn’t kill Kronos because if he judged him worthy of death, the he had to judge himself accordingly. Methos was no more “damaged” than any immortal as old as him would be. He KNEW he’d done abhorrent things in his past, but he also knew that no amount of breast beating and wailing and sorrys could ever change that. Guilt was a waste of time, so he didn’t indulge…..he got on with his life, and instead of going on a self recrimination g bender like Macleod was prone to do, he became a healer. In Modern Prometheus, he’s not only indulging in a little debauchery with Byron, he’s also a Doctor treating slaves. He NEVER did the whole “oh woe is me” routine, he just got the hell on with what he had, the ultimate pragmatist. He was deeply frustrated with Duncan because he thought(completely correctly) that he took stupid risks, for stupider reasons, like sparing the homicidal Kristin because she was an ex. He also saved Duncan’s arse several times. The “asshole” that you’re describing would not have done that.

You misunderstand the video. One: I love Methos and was usually compared to him. But he is also a dick. Ask Joe.
      2. I never said Methos saw himself as wise but that other immortals and fans alike did, hence the comparison with Darius.
      3. What you said about Methos and Kronos was what I said. We can agree to disagree here, but yes I think Methos genuinely thought he didnt deserve to live because of his relationship with Kronos as a horseman. But He also wants to live.
      4. I will openly disagree with you and maintain the opinion that Methos is a damaged individual and that was a large part why he spent so much time running from everything until MacCloud changed him.
      5. I agree with you in regards to how he saw Duncan early on. Yes Methos is still an asshole and youre right that early Methos wouldnt have stuck his neck out for him. But even later Methos is still an asshole, just a more likable asshole. Again, ask Joe.

      3. It's so arrogant for you to think that Methos considered himself unworthy to live. He is too old to think of that in such categories. It would be like an adult thinking about whether or not they should eat a candy bar. At this point of life (even if you live just a few decades, not millenias) there is no plain"good and evil" but there are nuances and possibilities.
      4. Methos is damaged, that is true, as much as any other immortal. But what makes you think that after all these thousand years "perfect" MacLeod came and...oops!... changed him in a few (two or three) years? Like, Methos never met a doctrinaire or prophet before. And who? MacLeod who killed about 80 immortals in seven years? Is he the pacifist you think he is?

@@fictionalmind-bending3224 Ask Joe? The same Joe who used to go to Methos for help every time he was in serious trouble or someone close to him was? Why to Methos? Because this asshole was not repelled or frightened by dark Dunkan in Deliverance nor was he angry/disappointed with Joe trying to offer his head in exchange for the daughter he never mentioned before. Methos just understood and helped without making fuss about it. He was ready to kill Dunkan's' ex who threatened Dunkan, Richie and innocent people around to protect them and accept their anger and digust in return. Methos is wise exactly because he knows, accepts and controls his own darkness. He saw and experienced and hurt hell of a lot and it made him cautious, withdrawn and somewhat bitter. But he is still not cynical about love and cares deeply about friends. He gives advice only when people are ready to hear and understand it. Sometimes he just cannot help it or maybe deems it necessary to be brutally honest and a bit cruel, which, well sort of makes him look like an asshole...

I think Mythos was, at first, simply meant to fill in the gap that was left with Darius' death. The ancient wise man for even someone as old and wise as Duncan. But they couldn't just copy/paste him as another pacifist priest, it would be too obvious. I mean the 2 actors already look VERY similar, physically. So instead of just having him repeat all the same things as Darius, they decided to have him come more from the "Been there, done that, it didn't work" angle, when it came to being a sounding board for Duncan. With Darius, usually the conversation would be Duncan throwing BAD ideas at Darius, about how to proceed, and him providing him nuggets of wisdom, that would make him see what the best course would be. With Mythos though, usually Duncan would toss out ideas that seemed good on the surface, but then would be shot down by Mythos' pragmatism and experience. So he would end up basically shaving off the various options, but wouldn't leave Duncan with a clear course on where to go. It would be "Don't do X, Y, OR Z, because they will all end like this" Duncan:" Well what should I do!?" Mythos: "I don't know!" or "You should do Q" Duncan: "But Q is just as bad for the people around me!" Mythos: "Yeah but you will live Highlander." Duncan: "Well screw that, I'm not sacrificing *Insert person/people/morals/ethics* to survive, I'll come up with something else." So it still served the same purpose, but just coming at it from the other direction. He didn't pull Duncan towards the light like Darius, he would instead clear the table of options to a few, or possibly none, and force Duncan to think outside the box to solve the problem. I don't think he always did that on purpose mind you, but narratively that's the role he filled in the story.
As to some people knowing about him and his name, that doesn't surprise me too much. The idea of being able to completely remove your existence from the entirety of human history, when you've lived as long as him, and done as much as him, seems....optimistic. The tales would become myths...(Mythos), and those would become legends. Most would disregard them, but the immortals he met that survived the encounter would likely recognize the details, and the Watcher organization would also find snippets and think "hmm, maybe this is an immortal"

Thanks for the video about Highlander in year 2024 and especially the character Methos (I thought nobody is interested in it anymore, and yet here you are).
But I want to argue with you. It seems to me that you have completely misunderstood the encounter between Methos and “Methos”. You say the conversation changed Methos. Not in the slightest! In my opinion, he met with fake Methos for the specific purpose of finding out if this man was a threat to his friends. He wanted to know if that man was a youngster, a fraud, a boaster, a hunter, a madman, a prophet...
First, he examined him and assumed his age and fighting skills (not a youngster)
Then, he asked him a specific questions in a specific order:
    - "Are you Methos" - "So they call me" (OK, so he doesn't insist on that identity)
    - "Cleopatra, what's she really like?" - fake Methos answered vaguely (OK, he's not a braggard)
    - "Tell me about your believes" - fake Methos, he's rather not talk about it(Not so much of a prophet, then)
    - "Do you really think there's no evil?" - Yes, he thought evil exists, he's realistic (Not a madman then)
    - "And if their mothers love them truly, It would be a different world" -"Could you say it wouldn't" (Well, that's not an original idea at all. So what is your message? )
Finally, fake Methos confesses: he's obviously having an immortal's midlife crisis of sorts. He no longer sees any meaning in life and is trying to make his life meaningful in this way ("Can anyone live for 5,000 years and say they did nothing?...It'd be pointless."). He doesn't really believe in all this, rather he has suicidal tendencies, but he wants to make the most of it. Real Methos definitely had experienced such emotions before, so he smiled.
Where's the enlightenment in that? Thinking that this can somehow change a person is like suggesting that a scary image on a cigarette pack will make a person quit smoking.

@@fictionalmind-bending3224you only saw the very end of their conversation. And I'm sure you'd jump out of your pants too if your friend said he had joined a religious cult. MacLeod simply cannot live without finding himself some preacher or chatting about morality.
What actually happened there is that Methos "went to buy some socks"and on the way decided to check out this new preacher. He had found him basically harmless and went to a bar, only to find out that Mac was tricked by that guy to give up fighting truly dangerous Culbraith. Probably Methos was annoyed that he might lose a friend over this jerk and wished he had killed his imposter.

They should create a new series and make it just like Highlander with the period pieces and modern back and forth but this time ONLY focus on Methos as the main character. Like this would be the ten or fifteen years prior to meeting Duncan McCleod. Lie to me and tell me this would not be a huge success.
