    I did commercial trucj body work inn the past for Frieghtliner. I sometimes miss doing it. Videos like this take the edge off. Cool

      @@johnkeith1599 would the 3m product be the smc repair resin? Part number 8219?

    • @johnkeith1599
      @johnkeith1599 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Brandin Brown 8219 is used mostly as a backside patch combined with matting to give strength. If you don't have access to the backside then use 3M 8217 with the matting instead. Be ready though cause you only have a couple minutes before it dries. Get all your prep done first

    To each their own... But when repairing with fiberglass mat, I always split the fiberglass in 2 sheets so it doesn't leave a hard line edge and feathers better into the surrounding surface.

    Sorry just skimmed through the video, does this require a 180 deg heat set for 15 minutes like the
    Lord Fusor brand SMC Adhesive? I'm adding fiberglass body panels to a SMC truck bed and trying to find the latest and greatest products to use.

    • @johnkeith1599
      @johnkeith1599 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are needing to "glue" the panels onto the bedside then I would recommend 3M 8273 repair adhesive. It is a 35 minute glue that will bond the two panels together then you can go back and bodywork the seams and smooth it out using the resin and fiberglass matting in our video. No need to apply any heat but like most two-part products, heat will help activate and speed up the drying process. If you have the time then I recommend that you visit 3M's collision repair training website, click on tab "view all courses" and scroll down to HDCV: Composite body panel repair for SMC, METTON, and FRP and also the next video on HDCV: Panel Replacement. They will show you all of the latest materials and proper repair procedures so that you don't have to do it twice. Much better than watching our 4 minute video.

      Thanks, I'll check it out. Your 4 minute SMC repair video was the most current and helpful video I've found. The rest are all repairing small holes and a few years old.

    I wish I knew how to tell the difference between normal fiberglass and SMC. I need to repair my flip/tilt hood on my 1989 Ford F800.

    • @johnkeith1599
      @johnkeith1599 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1989 models are more than likely traditional fiberglass. To tell the difference, check the color. SMC will be white and chalky with fiberglass strands woven throughout. Traditional polyester fiberglass will be semi translucent and is often golden colored with fiberglass strands woven throughout as well. Hope this helps

    Do you wipe down with acetone or prep the surface with anything after sanding and before applying body filler?

    • @johnkeith1599
      @johnkeith1599 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clean the panel with soap and water before starting, and after that, no extra step is needed for this product. Thanks for watching!

    Please tell me..does SMC resin work with non-smc fiberglass? Is a 1981 corvette made with SMC fiberglass? Great video - nice work!

    • @johnkeith1599
      @johnkeith1599 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. SMC resins will work on traditional polyester fiberglass. I wouldn't recommend it however mostly because of the cost difference. SMC resin is around 3-4 times the cost. Hope this helps!

      Thank you sir. I figured out that a 1981 corvette is indeed SMC fiberglas, so I have to use it. So that begs the question..what type of Dijon mustard colored filler did you guys use in the video? We never got to see the front of the can! I can imagine the old standard USC duraglas would also not work with SMC. Please, and thank you! Have a great evening.

      It is the cream hardener to activate the resin. It's also is available in red. Be sure to read the mixing instructions but it is normally a 1 inch ribbon per 1 ounce liquid resin

    I just tried to fix a jeep roof with rigid parts adhesive from 3M.. I put rage gold over it and it did not stick.. how did you get it to stick on to the semi hood?

    • @johnkeith1599
      @johnkeith1599 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      3M makes a few different semi rigid adhesives but most are made for plastic and are urethane based. There is a TPO adhesion spray that goes down first to help it stick. If your jeep roof is fiberglass and not plastic then you want to go with an epoxy based product. Purchase 3M 8115 panel bond and be sure to clean and sand the surface prior to applying. Panel bond sticks to everything but has a long dry time so be patient. I believe it takes a full 24hrs to cure but you won't have to worry about it not sticking.
