    Thanks for tire info.
    I decided to darkside my 1500 before pulling camper on extended trips
    Tip on balance beads
    Maker has spec weight of beads based on tire size.
    A motorcycle rear on the 1500 take 2 to 3 ounces.
    First seat tire, with valve core still removed use a clear plastic tubing over the valve stem tip
    Add funnel or make a pressure container from a pill bottle that looks like a brake vacuum bleeder
    Need very low air pressure like 3 psi in short burst to push beads thru tubing.

    I'm running a 205 car tire on my 1300 VTX and love it.There is no difference in handling between it and the stock Dunlop. It actually has much more traction and rides like it's on a rail in the corners.

    Thanks for the video. I was looking for someone who put a 195/75R16 tire on a Goldwing. I just bought one and am waiting for it to arrive so I can install it.

    Well... I just installed a "Radar 195/65R16" car tire on my 2003 Goldwing, 24-08-07. It was tight but got it in place without any prying tools. Looks good too. Also installed Eco beads for balancing.

    • @Jim12291958

      @@kirkstickney7394 I was able to install it just using a regular motorcycle jack that I was able to get the back wheel off the ground. I didn't have to use any special tools to get it in place. It was tight but I got it. When I took it out the tire did rub on the right edge for about 10 miles. Looking at the tire where it was rubbing, I couldn't even see any rubbing. It has to be so minimal. Being the size that it is also brings the speedometer in line with the speed. It's about 1% out instead of 8 to 10%. I now won't go back. It does take some getting used to but it ok. I found the Radar tire to be the best fit for the size I wanted. Hope it works out for you.

    I am a bit leery about using any kind of beads to use inside of a tire.....as these beads move around, do they not sand down the inner rubber; causing the thickness of the tire to diminish?
    I might have the same effect as sandblasting? After all, we are talking about constant movement at great speeds.

    • @JosephVollmar
      @JosephVollmar  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve run beads in several tires and they don’t wear down the tire at all. I have also used Copperhead BB’s and they work well too with no damage to the tire. They have used balance beads for years in tires with no issues.

    • @Kyle-sr6jm
      @Kyle-sr6jm 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are only rolling around in the tire at very low speeds.
      After that they are spun to relatively stable positions.
      Is a bb going to roll around inside a centrifuge after it is spun up?

    I believe motorcycle tires are made by manufacturers for the manufacturer as much if not more than for the consumers. If I had my way, a motorcycle tire would be much more like a car tire than what we see today as motorcycle tires.
    For a racetrack, I would not want to Darkside a bike, but if you were in some kind of contest for longevity of a tire on a motorcycle, which would you choose if you wanted to win?
    When my motorcycle tires wear flat, I don't really notice anything undesirable as far as handling goes. However, when I put a new set of tires on, yes, the bike wants to lean itself over on its own just about. At least that's how it feels. That is the sensation I get, and I don't really like it, but can get used to it. Like I said, I don't ride on a racetrack. I'm not a racer, just a rider.
    We are being ripped off by motorcycle tires manufacturers. My how little tread is on a motorcycle tire compared to a car, but they don't want us riding on tires that wear a flat spot in the tire, do they? Yet, this is how we ride. I spend $200.00 on a tire that will last only 8,000 miles. Why don't they put extra deep tread in the center of the tire? Maybe engineers have reasons for that, I don't know, but I'm just a rider and would like to get about 20,000 miles out of a $200.00 rear tire, and I don't think slippery hard rubber would be required to do that, if it were designed in a sensible and safe manner.
    For the racers and track riders, let them have their tires, but most of us, I believe, would be willing to sacrifice a bit of ease of leaning ability, for some longevity.

    Just for the hell of it I checked with an insurance company and they said good luck being covered if you get in an accident which may really ma become an issue if you have an accident with a passenger. Just something to keep in mind. With my wife and I weput our Valk over the weight limit so we are screwed either way so car tire it is.

      Curious what company you checked with. My wife is an agent and has checked with several companies, all have no problem with the car tire. There are lots of internet warriors claiming doom and gloom with insurance companies, but I've never heard of an issue with a claim, and I know a LOT of darksiders in the touring community.

      I've met a lifetime rider who sadly lost his wife who was riding on back of his Kawasaki Venture.
      Rear tire blowout at 70 mph & flipped her out back absolutely tragic man.
      I had just lost my wife to cancer so we shared tears & prayers together.
      But to this issue -
      The Venture was wearing a motorcycle tire at correct pressure he said, in good condition.
      I Know the very large Touring bikes like that are very close to weight / load limits.
      Seems like a fabulous application for a much stronger car tire.
      I just put a Petlas 205/55r17 on my V-Strom 650 it says max load 1500# at 49 psi.
      I prob couldn't load it to half that much, even 2 up.
      So I'm thrilled at the safer limits.
      First time DSing a Wee.
      I had DS on my late lamented Burgman AN400 Maxi Scooter, with superb results, so this ain't my first "Darkside Rodeo".
      What is new is my V-Strom has twice the HP vs AN400 plus manual transmission not CVT, so I know the inputs from me & feedback from the massively wider rear DS tire will take some adjusting to.

      I've installed this same tire on a vtx1800, it has about 1/8 " clearance between the tread and swing arm. It's like having overdrive cruising on the highway. Can't tell any difference in handling. I've got a Valkyrie that has a dark side on it when I purchased it. But it has a flat profile and it does feel weird cornering, I have to apply more countersteer, plus it you ride over a bump on the side of the tire it wants to lean the opposite direction. But this Firestone handles great on the VTX. If I sell a bike with a dark side on it, should I be concerned about any legality issues if someone wrecks the bike. Maybe having a waver signed that the new owner takes full responsibility.
      I may put one on my Valkyrie.

    I tried to install a 205/70/15 on my vulcan vn900. I can't get the bead to seat. I've put 100 psi in it and still won't seat. It's an aluminum rim. Any suggestions?

    • @opichocal
      @opichocal ปีที่แล้ว

      Polish the inner lip on the rim and use lots of windex. My Burgman took 150psi to mount one side and another hour in the Texas sun to finally seat the other. Pucker factor is 110%

    • @Sterling_Silver04
      @Sterling_Silver04 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh man. Those things can take wicked pressure to seat sometimes, even with the rim lubed up good and the tire soft. My last one seated at 120 psi, I was hunkered down in the other side of the shop so that if it exploded I wouldn't get hit. For lack of a tire cage I propped the tire between an old engine and some spare tires as a precaution to absorb some of it. Those suckers can be hard sometimes, and you don't want to be near one at that pressure.

    Why not just x-fer the beads you want into a smaller bag? Or into a pouch folded from paper?

    • @JosephVollmar
      @JosephVollmar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really didn’t want the extra trash floating around inside the tire, not that it really makes a difference unless it get stuck to the valve stem later during deflation. Upon later thought a clean curved transmission funnel would have worked great. May try that next time I’m only using a partial bag. Next time I buy them I will get smaller bags though..
      Your suggestions are both great ideas, and hopefully will help someone out who is looking to do this. Thanks for watching.

    Being is it's a taller tire, it should get you a bit more roll-out on the highway too. That elusive 6th gear a lot of us try shifting to.

    • @JosephVollmar
      @JosephVollmar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s what I’m aiming for. The 205-65 was about a 400-500 rpm drop getting me down to 3500 at 80mph. I’m hoping this one will bring me down close to 3000 rpm. My only concern is that I’m loosing some of my rake and trail angles and how that will affect the big girl at speed. Watch for a review video once I get the bike back on the road.

  • @dirtnut1967
    @dirtnut1967 ปีที่แล้ว

    Joe. Did you have any clearance issues when riding double

    • @JosephVollmar
      @JosephVollmar  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have my shock preload maxed out, and with the first darkside I think it was a 205-60-16 only on really large hard bumps. I switched to a 195-75-16 Firestone Transforce CV and now it will bump the shield for the wiring that is inside the upper fender with a 205# driver and a 130# passenger. The Transforce is about 3” taller than the stock motorcycle tire and drops my highway cruise RPM by almost 800, that is the only reason I’m running a tire that tall.

      It's not all about the price or the mileage it's more about the traction in the rain

    • @jimalton1564
      @jimalton1564 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For me it has nothing to do with affording the tire, it's all about going many more miles between tire replacements. Having to replace a tire in the middle of a 2 week cross country trip is inconvenient. Nearly as bad is planning a 3k mile trip and trying to decide if I should change my half worn out tire before the trip, or take a gamble that it will last. Then there is the safety factor, a car tire can handle higher loads, such as a touring bike loaded up for a trip, especially if you ride two up. There are also fewer times when you will be running on low tread on a well used tire. On one of my bikes I get 45-50k miles out of a Goodyear car tire. I removed the last one with plenty of tread left at 45k miles, still very safe to use. The same people who claim car tires are unsafe routinely ride their motorcycle tires down until they are completely bald. Which is really more dangerous?
