Great video Jason, I would have loved something like this when I was first trying to figure out Kwikset locks! So many great little tips here like the double pickle fork & spindle thing. I don’t automatically toss all old pins, if time allows I’ll measure them and compare to what they “should” be; if they’re extremely close I’ll save them to reuse, but I only rekey locks for myself, if it was for a customer I’d probably just toss to reduce chances of a callback and to feel better about the work. I didn’t know some of the Kwikset pin #s changed over time-very cool info to have especially dealing with older locks/pins. Thanks for making this 😊🙏
I can attest to dumping everything while testing the key without the back clip. Pins and springs will go everywhere. Thx for the Video Jason, I like the tips on getting the spindle and core out of the handset.
Great video.. I do believe that you might have missed your calling .. Instructor ... Putting the button at a 45 degree angle ( half way ) and centering the spindle are 2 things that I was not taught , I was told to put a mark on the inside of the outside knob to know what position to put the lock back in... Once again great videos .... Thanks
Great video Jason, even though I've been doing locksmithing on and of part-time since the earylmid 80's I still find your videos helpful. Steve -Schmidty's Lock and Key.
Pre-cut sets of keys can sometimes be found on eBay, we list random assortments every so often when the pile gets big enough (in fact I have a grouping photographed for listing right now) shadowenterprise
What do you do in a situation where you have a kwikset and the plug has a gap near the tail? I have ran in to several when I didn't have any shims with me and had to use a piece of tape to cover the gap but it's not easy getting the tape off when it is back together
I would pop out the cylinder at the door and reinstall the entry set, thereby leaving the door able to be open and closed without fear of latching. After rekeying its just a matter of pressing the the cylinder back into the entry set. Also less hardware to carry back to the truck.
Yep you can certainly do that too, except when the customer is following you around everywhere. Then you make sure and say be right back and let the door close 😂😂
Interesting, you said MACS is 5 for kwikset. I looked at my .003 pinning kit and it said 4. Then I looked at my mini kit for kwikset, Weiser and Schlage and it said 5 for kwikset.
I've always been under the impression that Kwikset was a MACS of 4. I think the MACS of 4 partly is based on their OEM pins. With how short the taper is on those, it may limit the MACS to 4, while with universal pins, those have a much longer taper, which could in theory, allow for a safe MACS of 5
I hope you can show the Kwikset Titan and that weird Kwikset where I asked that question on my channel about that weird piece on the Kwikset Pin Kit. I do have some of those locks if you need it to show. So what ever happened to the video of the Schlage Wafer Lock Punch Machine that I got for you on Ebay. I'm still waiting for it.
Thanks for making all these, I'm really enjoying them and learning a lot, thank you!
Another outstanding video Jason.
Thanks! The new kid at my shop will be watching your video series.
Thank you! :)
Nice.

@@selock CLK supplies sells some too, though they call them “setup keys” for some reason. I imagine other suppliers might sell them too 🤷♂
Once the Kwikset was out, I'd be inclined to toss it in the metal recycling bin, hoping to be reincarnated into a real lockset.😄👍

I prefer to stay within 4 regardless of what the kit says!

You mean you can't tell the cuts on a Kwikset by eye?! Cmon man, I thought you were better than that 😂
I obv can’t even do it with a gauge!
@@selock 😂😂 True!
