Miniature vehicles can be pretty expensive depending on their size and detail, but nothing quite compares to these stunning creations by Amalgam Collection in Bristol. Mike Fernie takes us through what makes these models so special, and why some of them are worth upwards of £20,000.

Really nice models, but obscenely expensive. I can't imagine having the motivation to pay £20k plus for a model. For me, which model I'd go for? I dunno. I loved my old X-Type, I loved my old Mx5 even more, but I think I'd want my current 911. Or maybe my dream car - a Dauer 962 LM.

I collect model cars in 1/18 scale and love the hobby but even my most expensive model is only worth ~£400. £20k is an absurd amount of money to drop on one of these but I do love the passion that these guys have for them.
I think these are for people who already own McLarens and therefore 20k is a lot less to them lol

Amalgam does make some amazing stuff. Case in point: Shmee's McLaren Senna model. And the only way you can tell it's a model in those glamour shots you started with is the size of the metal flakes in the paint.
That’s the only real big give away on a great scale model.
Yup and I think some of these pieces about them where the headline is £20,000 model car!! Does them a disservice. That's for a huge 1/8 scale , 3 foot long and very rare models.
If you want an equally we'll made Amalgam but something you can compare more easily to mid level quality models like Minichamps , say a 1:18 F40 or a 1:18 Formula 1 car, you're looking at around £600. I spent £400 on a rare MiniChamps Audi 90 IMSA GTO and as detailed as that is (you can change the AN fittings on the breather on the cam cover and read the Stack Dash speedo numbers, the fire extinguisher certification sticker) I know Amalgam cars are of much higher quality. So £400 to £600. Not crazy really.
Probably 2% or less of what they do is above £20k.
The fact its a small English company using local craftsmen as opposed to making everything in China like Minichamps makes it even more special in an age where 85% of the things in our daily lives from the Gearknob on your Audi to the DHS sofas in your living room is made in China.
I've got 2 Pocher 'Classic' kits. They will build up to be very impressive but will take a huge effort.@@realMaverickBuckley
There’s no doubting the skill, dedication and passion in these models. Great video guys and kudos to Amalgam. But I would never spend more than 3 figures on a diecast model, regardless of the amount of money I make. Utterly bonkers
Just means you don't make enough money, is what the rich would argue. I agree with you though, to me it feels like the I am not rich enough for the real thing so I buy these. Or I am so rich that I buy tiny replicas just to flex.
Right, since If you can afford to pay 18,000 pounds for one of those models, you can probably also afford the real car and so why even bother with the model then right?

Absolutely stunning !!!!! I had the privilege of knowing an artist of this scale, Dave Thibodeau of Tampa Florida. He built these type of quality models for Rick Hendrick, Roger Penske and others. He was a regular contributor in leading scale model magazines over the years. Tragically he was taken from us in 2021 at the young age of 50 by COVID-19. Anyone that has one of his creations or has seen his work will always have a tangible part of his legacy. I will forever miss my friend.

This was a really cool video. I would love to see these guys make an RC model with a working mini V8 or something similar. Great stuff, Amazing craftsmanship and detail.
Not sure if I'm correct, but someone built a custom V10 engine for rc. I think it was still in progress. Just random video pop on my feed.

That was a surprisingly interesting video, these models look absolutely mint and it's great to know more about their production.
It is because they are more than mint, if you get a new budget model you could call it mint because it’s fresh and new, but this much money makes it more than mint, it makes it incomprehensibly perfect.
Great video, I buy models every now and then of cars I like, often wondered how they tool up etc. I doubt they are all as thorough as this video shows but it does give some insight into the process, would be fascinated to see an end to end build of one of their models, from when they decide to do one to the first model off the line.
As someone who loves collecting model cars, to be in that workshop looking at the shells of the cars, the unfinished parts under the shell is just heaven.
I want to someday get to own one of these. Though they're exorbitantly expensive, to me it's well worth the price. The craftsmanship and dedication that went into making those is just... To me it's like sitting in a room with those same legendary cars themselves, except you can only look at them.
It is true they are worth it if you have the correct income

Absolutely and I think alot of people are concentrating on the 20k figure. If you wanted a fairly commonly dine model, say a McLaren Formula 1 car from 2019 in a reasonable scale like 1:18 its gonna be a 6 or 700 quid. Not 20k.
The level of finish on the paint is pure perfection! To get that finish on something so small is a massive task in itself and this is just the paint! I can’t imagine the hours that go into a craft like this and the amount of different skills involved. Absolutely phenomenal

I wish I could one day afford buying a model like that... I just love how detailed they are... Fancy... And let them do a model of my dream car, what I probably will own already at that point. But holy moly how cool those models are...

To answer your question in the video: if I was going to commission a 1:8 scale model from Amalgam it would have to be the Aston Martin Victor.

You could buy a car and a whole collection of cheaper and still well detailed car models for 20 grand!
Spend the £150k to get a bespoke model of your real car into production and then take a cut of selling 1:8 replicas for £20k a pop ... Only have to sell 150 or so to come out ahead . ..
4000 hours to create a £20,000 car? He's only making £5 an hour assuming all the parts and finishings are free. Doesn't sound like a worth while job to me unless it's all about your passion for the hobby.

When you spend 20 Grand on a model, and the maker puts so much attention to detail, the emblem in the back of the Speedtail shouldn't just be a sticker like it is here. You get the same on 100$ model car.
And btw. you can make carbon fiber at a much smaller scale. "It doesn't exist" sounds more like a way to make more money. For these prices they should better do some research
I dont think it can recreate the carbon platten in real scale and correct direction in this size.
Plus it have to sand all the part to make all edge sharper to make it look like real thing in scale.

If I were to get a model made, I think it would be of either my previous car, a Cobalt SS, or my current Evo 9 Wagon.

I've collected quite a few over the years, mainly low to mid tier models. The most expensive one I owned was the now discontinued and highly sought after Ferrari 250 gto by CMC. I paid £370 for it and sold it on after a couple of years for £1200. Amalgam are a little on the pricey side but if you have the money then go for it. Otherwise look at 1/18 Autoart, TSM, BBR etc for similar details and quality at more reasonable prices. With advances in manufacturing and cad technology even entry level models from the likes of bburago are very presentable these days. Their Lamborghini Sian is excellent for the price.
I love hearing stuff like this, it makes me feel better about only having budget cars, and I also have burago’s Lamborghini Siàn, which is the black and yellow version with tinted windows, and half white, half black wheels.
I had all 6 CMC SLR and had to sell them when times got tough £12,000 and that was in 2017

At 65 this still brings out the kid in me - and I still build models. The satisfaction of creating something of such beauty and quality is so understated. Desire, envy, admiration - it is simply a case of "I. Want."
There’s clearly a market albeit on this level is quite niche but they can put a price on these beauties cos there’s collectors that buy them. The next level of cool would be a working engine that doesn’t drive but just ticks over and sounds like the real thing. But thinking about that it would be immensely hard
or comes with high quality speakers inside..
Their target buyer are rich people or company as art-piece and they only able to build very few of it. Unlike mass produce stuff, they have to mark up the price of single model much higher.

I would get a model of one of my unobtainable dream cars. Probably a Zonda. It was the car that made my jaw drop when I saw it in GT2.

The artistry is amazing. I build scale models with quite a bit of detail, much of which i have to scratch build myself but this is a whole other world of model making. If i was to have one made it would be of my 1988 pontiac fiero gt.

I am not a model car person, but if i had to choose any one, i'd get a model of my Dad's 81 Datsun 280ZX. It's orange speckled with a t-top. He sold it for a porsche 911, but i love and miss that 280ZX!
I love building 1/8, 1/12 and 1/16 scale models because the amount of detail I can pack into a larger scale model would amaze most people stuff like springs, linkages, spark plugs, buttons, nuts and bolts and wires and tubes, I have even made working butterfly valves on carburetors. MFH even makes a working 1/12 scale four rotor Mazda Wankle rotary for their 787b with working slide ITB itakes.
Bespoke works, deserve ever penny, im a designer and I know the hours and patience that you have to invest, and all the experience and skills to create ever detail over the pieces.
Imagine creating a model car like that where absolutely everything is made the same as the full size ones but miniaturised so everything functions and engines run and things

I used to work at a vintage race shop that had some F1 cars including Stewart’s Tyrell. A couple of guys from the company Almagam came to the shop and were there for three days taking pictures of the car from all angles and also putting white dot stickers all over the car. Pretty cool. It was a one off for the owner of the Tyrell who wanted a model of it.

I am astonished of their work. If I were to spend to have a masterpiece scale model, I would choose the Jesko Absolut and/or the Bolide.

1/18 scale Amalgam are massively overpriced for the detail you get, i'd rather spend E300 on a BBR model and be twice as happy.

Ultimately 1.75 million for a real mclaren speedtail is just as much of a ripoff because it has the same utility as a 900 quid ford mondeo, but the price isnt determined by its usefulness its mainly the hours it takes to make
@@RealUlrichLeland You can't compare this to "the real thing". One is a mode of transportation that gets you from A to B quite swiftly with a nice sound, the other is a paper weight.
some amalgam models get rebranded as AB models. 300 us got me the sealed f40 rossa corsa

I could honestly see a 15-20 grand model car being worth it, if it is one of your absolutely unobtainable dream cars. If I had that F40 model, I could spend so much time just looking at it, admiring every little detail.
Fair point, people who buy these models usually have the real car or at least an expensive real car collection. If people are willing to spend millions on paper art, this type of art is a bargain in comparison. I'm sitting beside my AB/Amalgam F40 in 1/18 scale and it's fantastic, details on this one are amazing for that size, same can't be side for the rest of their 1/18 line.
I manage to spend 2 hours a day looking and filming my budget models, so yeah it would be hard to get me away from a model like this if I owned it, partially because I’d be too paranoid that someone would leave a fingerprint.
For those complaining about the price, like he explained, it has to do with the market. If they prep everything to make a certain model and there is only 1 that will be sold, the entire project cost obviously has to be paid for by that single buyer. If there are 100 buyers, it will be much cheaper. etc.
If you order 100.000+ of the same model, you will likely be able to get them for like $500 per model or cheaper.
Point is, there isn't a big enough market, mainly due to competition.
Same goes for everything. If all car manufacturers stop making cars except BMW, Audi, Mercedes and they stick to 1 certain model for 5+ years, we would be able to buy those cars for $5000 or less brand new and those companies would still get rich AF.
Still not worth it no matter how many paragraphs you spout trying to justify it…

No, the REAL question is how can a model that takes 4000 hours to make ONLY cost 18k?? That's just 4.5 dollars an hour. The precision artist's labor alone should cost you many times the price, let alone the precision materials and components. These are incredible bargains for the amount of labor required to make them.
Maybe the stated 4000 hours include all the pre production work ( scan, cad).

That was either an error on Mike's part, or a reference to the 50-150K full-bespoke models. Further into the video (6:06) there's a mention of a month to six weeks into the models, that's more reasonable for the 7-20K versions.
F1 has banned all sorts of measurement techniques but all the lower teams need to do is buy one of these models and scale it up /s
It’s never going to be a current season car though so would be pointless to copy anything from a scale model.
Many people saying they would never spend that kind of money on a model car.
But honestly? If I was filthy rich, I would definetely buy some of those. Excellent decoration for a car enthusiast and they are handcrafted by pationate people, I think it would be worth supporting that kind of art and craftsmanship.
The speedtail is one of my favourite cars, simply gorgeous.
Would love a model of a tank, more often than not the models I see are purely exteriors, imagine a model tank with an accurate to scale size, thickness of the armour and replica interior. That would be incredible.

@@xela-nw8eh personally, I love ww2 tanks, watching an anime where schools compete in tank battles using ww2 tanks is why I got into tanks. With that in mind ww2 would for me be the obvious answer, but honestly any era, ww1, inter-war, ww2, cold war, the modern age, any of it, I would be pretty happy to have a tank with this three of detail. But yh I would prefer ww2 myself.

Absolutely gorgeous work.
There are three cars I'd want detailed 1/8 scale models of:
-1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa
-1968 Holden Kingswood HT in white with brown interior (Aussie thing)
-1978 Chrysler Sigma in silver with blue interior (another Aussie thing)
It seems as though I have a thing for years ending in "8" but it really is just a coincidence.
The level of detail is absolute madness!
Similar quality found elsewhere at far far more reasonable prices

Most of the time, even the prices of a mere AutoArt model are beyond my reach. I can't imagine the monumental investment into one of these treasures.

I'm currently building the Gone In 60 Seconds Eleanor Shelby GT500 and recently started building KITT from Knight Rider both in 1:8 scale, it's an awesome hobby!

No different to other expensive things, if you have the money .Full size cars are one of them

They charge $1,280.00 for the glass box seen at 8:16 (not including the black plinth the model sits atop). That's $1,280.00 for 5 sheets of glass and 4 bits of aluminum.
I collect 1:64 models mostly mini gt , tarmac, hkm, hot wheels, the bigger the size the more space it needs. But beautiful detailing on those cars.

I would have a model of my first love, a Jensen Interceptor. It was primrose yellow with a white roof a 1972 J registration. Cream leather upholstery. It unfortunately had to go, as during the oil crisis the cost of petrol at 8 mpg was virtually the same as my wages as a NSU Ro80 fitter!
That Senna scale model is beautiful down to every detail
They are all masterpieces. I can understand spending that type of money over paintings. Art is art. This is new in the art world in my eyes.
The only way I could rationalize purchase like this Christopher was going to be a scale model production design that I was working on. A showpiece for investors.
