    Is there supposed to be a t washer between the case and the back spring of the kickstart mechanism

    Assembly note: Money shot at the 4:00 minute mark. Look closely at the end of the kick start shaft and ratchet gear. They have punch marks that have to align with each other when re-assembled to have the correct return spring tennsion. Don't overlook this very simple mistake.

      have you checked the clutch basket or if the clutch plates are stuck together? clutch adjustment is correct? very unlikely its bushings/bearings or oil making it hard to get into neutral.

    Should you loosen clutch spring retaining bolts in a star pattern?

    • @CoteMotorcycles
      @CoteMotorcycles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doesn’t matter. If you want to get crazy you can loosen them by hand in an opposing pattern and only loosen them 1 turn at a time but I usually just send it with an impact. Never had an issue; just make sure the impact is for sure in reverse or you’ll snap a bolt or clutch hub.
      Have fun!

      I would guess that something is out of alignment. Your spring might not be located properly or the spring alignment color might be binding up. Take her off and check it out! You can find me on FB and send some pics so I can take a look if you like.

    I just bought a 150cc apollo viper and it's not needing a clutch to move in any gear and when you put into gear it pops out of everyone and it won't drive of at all when it does hold on a gear. any thoughts? I bought it Monday the 26th and it came Tuesday 4th and we have not had any luck with the company. what do you think?

    Buenas tardes, te consulto, tengo un CRF450x con muy pocas horas de uso, le diría unas 40 horas, me a comenzado a hacer un ruido metálico como un click click en el lado del embrague, lo hace en forma discontinua, aleatoria-mente, cuando aceleras no aumenta sino que suena igual se escucha mas en frió y en caliente casi deja de hacerlo, tendrá alguna idea de lo que puede ser?

    i have an 05 crf 450r i have the engine out and rebuilding it but i had it shifting fine the other day and today i noticed it wont come out of first nor will it go into neutral. what can i check to fix this?

    • @CoteMotorcycles
      @CoteMotorcycles  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the cases are still apart it will likely not shift properly because of minor mis alignments. If the two halves are together you need to make sure you're turning both shafts against each other while trying to shift. If that doesn't help you need to double check your gears and thrust washers are installed correctly. If the engine is assembled and the problem occurred after installing the clutch, check the inner clutch hub race. The race, which holds the large needle bearing, will sometimes migrate out of the hub causing a clearance issue. It will need to be pressed back into place, don't use a hammer or you'll wreck it. Otherwise I'll need a lot more info to help. Look me up on Facebook and we'll see if we can get to the bottom of it.

    The bearings on the case show sealed side out( red) . I opened my engine and appears they were put in backwards. Will this be a issue long term or will they get plenty of oil from clutch side

    • @CoteMotorcycles
      @CoteMotorcycles  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Mcbride it's always good to have things the way the manufacturer suggests. I've never tried it with the seals in backwards so you'll have to let us know how your engine likes it. ; )

    I own a 2007 CRF250R that I purchased in a non-running condition. I have come to teh conclusion that the transmission is somehow stuck because when opening the side of the case I can freely move the crankshaft but the transmission is stubbornly stuck in gear. Before removing the engine, pulling the clutch lever did not let the bike roll. What may the problem be?

    • @CoteMotorcycles
      @CoteMotorcycles  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your rear wheel or brake aren't seized I think you answered your own question. A transmission bearing or broken gear is usually the only culprit of a stuck trans. Another option is someone may have tried to "fix" it and installed some of the gears or thrust washers in the wrong position on assembly.

    Hello cote, wondering if you could help me with understanding something. So I have a 2007 crf450r, and I was riding it 2 days ago and needed to help my brother as he had fallen. I turned the gas off and laid my bike to the side. Apparantly that's a big no. I picked my bike back up and it didn't shift out of second. I'm not exactly sure what to call the piece that fell out of place, shifting fork? But it will not shift anymore. Can you explain why this happened? And also does your video explain what I should do?

    • @CoteMotorcycles
      @CoteMotorcycles  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like a bent shift fork or broken ratchet / pawl mechanism. You'll have to download a service manual and watch a few of my vids but as long as you can turn a wrench you should be ok. Check the ratchet/ pawl mechanism first and then get into measuring the shift forks for warpage. All the videos we supply will show you how to get the job done and the manual will help you with values for measurement.

    maybe you can help me here.. I have a 2012 crf450r its always shifted fine and I've never had an issue prior to today.. I was riding along kicked it into 5th, went to get back into the gas and it popped out of gear. I thought it might have been a weak shift so I shifted pretty firmly and got the same response. any help on where to start would be greatly appreciated

    • @CoteMotorcycles
      @CoteMotorcycles  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would start by looking at the ratchet/pawl mechanism behind the clutch. Sometimes the bolt will back out giving negative gear engagement. After that you'll have to split the cases to check the shift forks, shift drum and gear dogs.

    • @goboardcanada6263
      @goboardcanada6263 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Murdock David I'm not sure how the power transfers through each gear but if you don't have a problem with the shift detent and mechanism you likely have a bent shift fork. Which means splitting the cases. Check out the transmission videos from cotemotorcycles.

      Get back in there!
      Probably the spring on your kick start ratchet assembly. The locating pin for the spring might be out of the hole, this makes the width of the spring increase and it will bind between the case and pawl mechanism. Let me know what you find!

    • @ryanpro3363
      @ryanpro3363 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I started my bike yesterday after I finished rebuilt and kicker stayed down and I brought it back up and had to hold it forward so the noise as if it was still down while running ( if you no the sound) it went away but when I let go of it it moved about a inch back and started the noise again

    • @CoteMotorcycles
      @CoteMotorcycles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ryanpro3363 sounds like the same thing as I said before. The ratchet mechanism isn’t disengaging. Take the cover off and send me a picture of the kick start mechanism on messenger. I’ll see if I can see what’s going on.

      I'm repairing this right now. Mine partially was returning, but binding.
      All the kick-start hardware was installed correctly, there were however some flakes of steel under the kick-start shaft that were binding the shaft.

    I have a 2007 cr85 and it idles fine and reves fine in nutrel and in gear with the cluch in but as soon as u let out the cluch no matter how slow or fast it bogs down and cuts out nearly straight away. I have spent the last few weeks rebuilding the bike and just sprayed the frame and new bearings all around and also put a vertex piston as I thought it was the piston at first. Its really bugging me as iv tryed almost everything. If u could help id greatly appreciate it. love your vids! Enjoy a lot. thanks

    • @CoteMotorcycles

      The clutch hub or basket could be worn causing the plates to stick together. You'll see grooves in the aluminum where it should be smooth. I've also seen very contaminated oil causing the plates themselves to stick together. I assume the bike rolls ok? I've seen blown wheel bearings or seized calipers cause this issue as well. Hope that helps, good luck and thanks for watching!

    Why my honda crf 450r dont changue shifts

    • @CoteMotorcycles
      @CoteMotorcycles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most common reason is that the bike fell on the shifter or took a hard hit that bent a shift fork. That would mean tearing the cases apart.
      I’ve also seen that the shift detent bolt comes loose and doesn’t allow the lever to turn the drum properly. The loose fastener will be the one I’m holding in the thumbnail of the video. You need to make sure the detent wheel is properly located onto the shift drum.

  • @Belicose777
    @Belicose777 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    7:57 didn't make sense to me. Maybe it's the way you worded it. You don't want excess clearance but pressing the gear into the basket with the socket will increase clearance. Don't you want to decrease clearance to get rid of excess clearance? By excess clearance I imagine you mean too tight correct? More than or less than .006 clearance?

    • @goboardcanada6263
      @goboardcanada6263 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Belicose777 the goal is to press the gear farther into the basket. The socket braces the soft aluminum basket to allow the gear to slide farther in. Otherwise you would be pressing on the fingers, which would break. If the gear isn't installed properly it will act like your motor is seized after assembly. This seems simple enough but was a very tough problem to find. Hope that makes sense. - Cote Motorcycles

    • @goboardcanada6263
      @goboardcanada6263 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Belicose777 that's because the clearance should be 0. It's not meant to ever move but for some reason it does after disassembly.

      @@geovanyfz you can see how the clutch basket should look at 8:00 on the video. The fingers should be completely smooth. I suppose you could also need to set your clutch cable. If it's not disengaging the clutch will drag and won't be able to find neutral. Very unlikely its a worn bearing. Could also check the detent bolt (5:28) The bolt could come loose and the detent star could have rotated on the shift drum. You would likely have trouble shifting in all gears, not just neutral.
