Doing decent "passable" sweeping isn't really as hard and scary as most people perceive it, the hardest part is making it all sound clear and fluent. Props to Ola for always learning and evolving!
This, and when we start going into patterns that aren't just up-down plus other shapes beyond minor, major, and diminished. But sweeping is such a fun world to explore much like other techniques
I've been learning a bunch of Between The Buried and Me songs like Selkies and Alaska, progressing slowly through each riff. They got a lot of wicked technique, and a lot of the sweeping parts are frankly easier than their fast alternate riffage, take opening of Backwards Marathon for example. Anyways, I gotta get back to practicing lol.
This is THE best sweep picking instruction and advice I've seen. I went from not being able to sweep at all to being able to sweep almost anything slowly and some easier stuff quickly because of this. You've really found a kickass teacher there Ola.
Jon is a beast but such a nice and humble person. Love his insta page. He’s giving back so much for free basically. Lots of respect for him. One of these days I have to book him and get a few lessons.
Because he's one of those guys that knows that you re not losing information while teaching. Its a way of learning too if you think about it. You re picking up basics and reviewing things
Jon is such a good teacher, he points out the common mistakes you do/can do and tell you of the way to avoid that and explains it in a simple and understandable way. I wrote him a while back ago concerning sweeping and he was kind enough to teach me a thing or two. Above that he´s an amazing guitarplayer :)
Jon's the best teacher I've ever had. I've made a ton of adjustments to my playing. Even this past week I've made huge adjustments I wouldn't have without his guidance. I hope I can keep taking lessons from him indefinitely
Im taking lessons from Jon via Skype. Very good person, professional guitarist and teacher. He dramatically improved my guitar playing technique. I totally recommend
Ive been playing for 27 of my 36 years on earth, that one correction of a downstroke on the lowest note blew my mind. Guess I can sweep now. Thanks Mr. John...And Ola.
LOL that simple thing of turning a sweep around with a downstroke was basically what was missing in my sweeping technique. Always had problems with the turn around and it fkn blows my mind how i never thought of doing it this way, because this really was like flipping a switch for me xD
These are great exercises! I'm guessing most of us don't spend nearly enough time practicing these techniques. It's nice to have someone like Jon help us slow down and focus on the little details. Jon's Patreon page is pretty sweet too.
Okay ngl that part with “ending” with a downstroke (outside picking) on the sweep triplet was a eureka moment for me (2.40) Have no idea why I never thought of that. Can’t remember the last time a single tip has helped me that much. Instantly improved my sweeps! Thank you for this:-)
Holy Moly on a Goaly xP Why no one hasn't told what to ACTUALLY do with your pick while sweeping? All the tutorials what I've seen have only told like "you have to just glide your pick over the strings like this" and then they just keep swoopin and poopin and I can't make any sense of their stupid lessons because they just didn't show this one little detail that actually might made all the difference whether or not I might actually be able to sweep after all. We'll see, have to try it once I'm done with this comment :D Because of all those other tutorials I've always thought that you actually have to glide the pick over the strings and it just never sounds good. This guy actually digs in quite deep and is actually picking the strings rather than tickling them like you'd have a feather in your fingers. Because of how he does it, it might actually made sense to me, finally. And yes I actually used this word way too fucking much. Sorry but actually not sorry :D
I've been using some of Jon's 10 minute workouts for the last month or so (and his alt picking warmup for the last 2) and they've been quite helpful! He's a monster player.
I've been following him since 2016 and his Children Of Bodom covers. He's a brilliant player and teacher, I'm glad to see that his hard work paid off :D
Ok, I have to be honest here. The way he said to hold the plectrum and the motion of the hand actually made my sweep sound clean for the first time. Holy shit. 5/5 Would sweep again.
Hey Ola, love your channel. Just a little idea for your S.W.O., show us a part of a song/riff with a new technique you've just learned. This will inspire new and experienced players to keep on working on their skills.
Just begin slowly eventually you well get there, that being said it really hard in the beginning to get it fast and clean. It took me a really long time but suddenly it just worked for me
That's one humble dude. Would love to learn from someone like him! What I would like nearly as much is the evertune model Ola is playing with the finish of the fixed bridge model Jon is using, please!
Check out Jon's Patreon. That's how I started with him. He has guitar coaching where you send him a video and then he sends. You a video lesson back and material.
Kudos Ola for having the open mind to admit and facing your "short comings" regarding your playing.....How many other professional musicians are willing to admit/face their faults in public?.....That takes major cajones You sir are a GOD among men!
Expecting instant results isn't gonna happen. Work pays off when you put in the work on anything, starting slow then building up. Best way to learn, on any instrument.
Greetings Ola the learnerer! You recall Sylosis-ish riff on you last Sunday with Ola and this particular sweep move on 5:04 reminds me of Empyreal by Sylosis;) Btw, Josh told on one of his streams that it would be great to have a coffee with you, make it happen pls:)
@@pedrosilvaproductions the trick is to mix hybrid picking with string skipping and sweeping, to have multi technical approaches to groupings of notes, then different picking accents per note. Then tapping and slides from shape to shape or note grouping. Then various patterns leading into bends, or rakes or sweeps leading into bends. I find that its easier to "flow" with a "hammer ons from no-where" approach to sweeping and string skipping. You can have limitless fluidity through chord changes with accents from the right hand.
Ola your guitars are beautiful! from what i have seen in the community recently regarding quality and sound im starting to second guess my next guitar purchase which was gonna be a Gibson. How can i get my hands on one here in Canada?
Random question/request: Has there ever been a drum or rythm application that u have felt: "Oh that's good stuff. It can almost replace a drummer!" ? If u have tried or even sell such stuff I'd be thrilled to see a section about it on Sunday with Ola. I can mention Rock Drums loop. For 46 SEK u get the adfree version. The loops contains two different fill ins and the first half of the loop is slightly different than the second. It's a bit tacky and a cheap trick but I kind of enjoy it. But there ought to be more advanced pedals and stuff out there. As a suggestion for Ola testing shit? Lol! Anyway great show! Thanks man! And as a suggestion for Chuggo, I'd like him to say: "Aah!!! But for f*** Sake! CUT YOUR HAIR!!!" LOL!
I am no expert but I have been sweeping comfortably for a long time now and I tried this out. My 'newness' to this method aside, I feel like this is more complicated than the way that I learned it. With his picking technique your picking hand is almost always ahead of your left hand. Being that the main issue people seem to have with sweeping is keeping their hands in sync (and of course muting) this seems like added complexity by having one hand one step ahead of the other instead of simply together. The reasoning for the added complexity (as he stated) was (essentially) for a secure feeling to make sure you don't hit the wrong string but is that a problem people actually have when sweeping? It's always the next string so idk how you run into that problem. Not to mention this makes sweeping seem less fluid since its a series of bouncing to and stopping at the next string. Also turning around when you hit the low note but then suddenly skipping resting on the next string just seemed awkward. Both of these guitarists are immensely talented and I'm not trying to take anything away from that. Also I always appreciate people willing to put out free lessons. I'm just curious if this method deserves some criticism.

Well this applies to guitar playing in general (or any other instrument as a matter of fact).
That's why at least for me, clear and fluent arpeggios are played better with alternate picking and not sweep

They got a lot of wicked technique, and a lot of the sweeping parts are frankly easier than their fast alternate riffage, take opening of Backwards Marathon for example. Honestly seeing this makes me feel better as finally learning guitar at 25 instaed of dicking around and just learning songs.
4:59 - Jon - And the idea is not to do it super fast, the idea is..
Ola - Can you play it super fast?
Ola knows what we want.
If you can play it slow, you can play it fast.

I just switched to string skipping, and now this comes along.
I thing that string skipping is harder than sweep. Because sweep has a flow, and string skipping breaks it
