- In this lesson, I wanted to share with you the little weird hack that helped me speed up my development of the sweep picking technique. I am not preaching that this is is THE way to practice or learn this technique. This is just a little vlog/lesson on how I learned how to do it myself. This is one of those techniques that so many awesome guitarists know how to do, but are unwilling to teach. On the slower side, never see enough about mastering vibrato.

That's bc most can't do it. Which is odd because it's one of the easier things to learn.
Arlen roth or Albert King come to mind.
Vibrato is the most individualistic thing a guitarist can do on the instrument.. You can't really teach it, you can teach the 'technique' but even then, when you get it you get it and its yours.. Listen to some players that you enjoy listening to their vibrato and learn their solos note by note and repeat. For example, I learned Hold the Line solo and that solo had a massive impact on my vibrato as I love intense vibrato on top of that I listen to a lot of Gary Moore and Slash... :) So learn some solos that have the vibrato that YOU like and keep practising! No shortcuts on this one unfortunately.. Hope that helps!

A very tricky thing to teach but the idea is squeezing the pick a little bit harder and allowing you thumb to catch the string lightly.
I usually don't like gold hardware on guitars but it looks appropriate for that one. Sweet guitar and awesome video. Look forward to practicing these as I've been working on sweep technique lately.
I just nailed my first 5 string sweep pattern yesterday and holy shit does it feel good when you finally get one down. It’s NIT impossible! Just very hard lol

The really crucial takeaway for me was "pick as lightly as possible". I really had to concentrate on just feathering the string, but once I got there I was instantly picking faster and cleaner. I thought I was picking lightly before- but I wasn't!

It's hilarious I don't even play this kind of stuff at all.. I still could each your videos all day. I've started recording with a group that plays more along this rock style though so I'm trying to develop some of these techniques. 8f you break these licks down and play with no distortion. It's jazzy as hell

All the how tos are completely different which is tricky.

Brilliant tutorial Cam! I love the advice. I spent hours and hours just to be average at this technique. Do you think it’s better to hammer on during the descending portion of a sweep run? Sometimes, depending on the pattern, I feel I pick some of those notes.
My advice would be go with what feels comfortable to you so long as the notes come out as intended

But i have a question...isn't there another note in the Steve Vai lick, which you play in the fast example, but is missing in the slow explanation? After the down slide on the g string with the index finger?
No I don't miss anything. The only thing that varies is the phrase at the very end of the lick.

On the pick subject i run out of picks once ,lost in the abyss, then cut a credit card corner and now i cant get away from it because of its precision property's its pretty good.
Why not just use the credit card to buy new picks? 🤔😂

Try different gauge strings or tune differently

It's not really a skill to teach since everyone learns and plays differently but be aware of palm muting and left hand muting technique.
You muting is top notch !I play charvels as well . Any issues with any term spring noise ?
Only on one guitar and solved it with cotton wool

Where your guitar at the right that enables you to do it as well as everything you need. Then focus on looks and poses

Hey Cameron! Great Video! about the guitar you playing in this video, do you find the Floyd rose staying in tune well when "abusing it"? ive heard that recessed floyds have a tendency to go out of tune frequently. do you expreicnce that problem?
I've not had any problems. I think the people who complain about it are those who actually abuse, destroy, misuse or simply don't know what they're doing with one aha

Cameron have you played any of the USA made versions So Cal or San Dimas by any chance. Are they really above the Mexican made ones. Im thinking about buying a USA one. Thanks is advanced. Happy New year as well brother.
With that budget I'd get 2 pro mods. Whenever I've played USA made versions I can't feel or hear any real difference at all.

OK nicely done. Beautiful guitar. Wonderful playing. etc, etc...BUT what does the LEFT hand do? You say if your fretting hand can keep up with your picking hand. Please explain the fretting hand, besides just the notes that you're playing. What's the technique? Thanks!
There isn't a specific technique to the fretting hand besides reaching the notes you need to efficiently whichever way you see fit. If you watch the video I actually explain how it's good to hover your fingers over notes you're going to play which helps but obviously that depends on the shape.

@@cgdoublezerorc controlling string noise is mostly a matter of both left and right hand muting, generally you use your picking palm to mute the lower strings, and your fretting fingers to mute the highs

They'll be F spaced. I doubt they'd manufacturer guitars purposely designed to have Floyd Roses on them and order regular spaced pickups

Can blaze through legato licks, but sweeping just feels too awkward
Even if you didn't use it extensively, it can be a helpful trick in your arsenal. Sweeping doesn't have to be fast either. Some of my favourite sweeping licks are really slow
So what is they your action height in terms of numbers? I'm asking because everyone has a different idea of what's low/high. And also from the way it sounds, it sounds rather low because I can hear your strings hitting the frets.
Strings aren't hitting the frets and I don't have a measurement for it

I was just kidding around. High might be 2.25 mm on the treble string and 2.75mm on the bass
Not a bad video and some interesting licks, however I feel there is still a lot missing. I came here for the technique, more than the licks yet very little was spoken about in regards to technique. Another thing I feel is missing is the key and how to transpose these licks. How do we know what key most of these licks are in? I want to know how to adapt and move these shapes to suit the key I am in. This is one of the most integral parts of knowing how to apply such licks yet this was left out, thus even after the video we are still left guessing. The video should be giving amnswers to our questions, not questions to your answers.
Thanks for the constructive feedback... However I do explain what keys a lot of these licks are in. Learning how to transpose licks comes from knowing where your root notes are and that comes from a lot of time with the instrument on your own. The way I transpose any lick is by comparing where it sits in relation to position 1 of the minor pentatonic scale and I've never had any problems. Hope that helps...
The whole point of this video was to put forward a hack which isn't often talked about online which is making sure the left hand can match the 'sweeping/raking' action in your picking hand which anyone can do pretty much. People always assume that there picking technique was the problem whereas in my experience with students the fretting hand can often be the problem. In this video I put out the licks I learned first that helped me gain the technique and some pointers on how I gained the technique. Learning how to transpose licks and move them around is up to you to learn.
