  • If you are a buyer or seller of cards on Ebay, you need to be aware of these changes. EBay’s new condition categories and definitions are absurd. And while I am ranting let’s talk about taking good pictures. This needs to be fixed now!

Any type of condition scale is going to be subject to the interpretation from the person listing the card. I have seen way too many cards that say perfect or mint in the title and the card isn't even close. The centering may be good, but you can see corner/edge wear, etc. I think the scale eBay is using is fine - it keeps things consistent with grading terminology, which in my opinion makes it easier and faster to assess the condition of the card rather than worrying if eBay's definition of an "excellent" card is really a "gem mint" card or not. As for the pictures...yeah...those are pretty important since prospective buyers can't see the card in person. If a seller doesn’t have good pictures, I typically just move on. Normally, there are plenty of other sellers with that same card. If it's not that readily available of a card, then I'll ask for more pictures. Or, if I'm willing to take a chance, I take that chance and live with the results.

The people to blame is PSA. They set the names for their grades with these kind of words. PSA VG (very good) 3. PSA EX (Excellent) 5. etc.

This is exactly it. Ebay more or less just used their verbage.

I agree- but ebay does not have to use these terms. And if people took better/clear pictures it would make it easier to judge.
      Keep it simple
      Excellent
      Very good
      Good
      Bad
      Poor

Well the flood of new "investors" to this HOBBY most likely will agree with you.
Though the verbiage associated with the condition goes way back to the beginning.

@SwingBataBata the verbiage for graded cards yes. But Ebay did not use to use all these- as far as I know it was just nm-mt or better.

It's pretty much standard definitions of condition

People try to unload all there "Excellent" cards hoping nobody will complain.
Though the rate of returns and complaints have been skyrocketing im sure.
Buying anything raw there is probably around a 50% chance you would grade it or not.

    • @nothingbutcardboard

I wish it was as high as 50%. I have to buy 20 raw cards to find a couple to grade. ( 2 or 3)

Excellent is a 6 if grading so very safe for most modern and ultra modern cards being listed. Most should be the next category up really.

    • @nothingbutcardboard
      @nothingbutcardboard  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

But we are talking about RAW cards. We cannot expect everyone selling cards to know the terms or the definitions. The terms should be simple and universal- great, good, not so good bad… ( that is not great, but you get my point)
Pack fresh should not be the best choice!

@nothingbutcardboard I understand the pain, unfortunately the majority of people posting cards on ebay have no real clue on how to judge condition. It comes down to the pictures (the quality) and hope you get lucky they didn't find that opportune angle to not show any blemishes.

Don’t buy cards without good photos. Usually the ones at an angle are try to mask the centering on the card like the one in the video. Need to be selective. The majority of the cards I buy are grad able. As far as the mint, excellent, g
Very good ratings, it goes back to the old Beckett price guides and has been that way for ever

Agree on the pics , we just don’t know if they are honest are not.
I understand on the grades- but doesn’t this refer to graded cards?
Ebay used to be nm-mnt or better, very good, good, poor?

    • @SwingBataBata
      @SwingBataBata 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If someone takes a picture of a card at an off angle is a red flag for sure.
Also I don't believe most people look at more than the main photo even if there are others posted. That's the only way you should be taking pictures of a card there than a 90* angle of back and front.
I start holding people accountable as well. Ask for other photos or put them on blast for being a snake in the grass.

You lost me on this one. Excellent condition has always been below nrmt to mt or better. They way Ebay has it has been the condition since I've been collecting since the early 80s. Same as when Beckett came out and there was no grading. Grading is tough and subjective so not sure how they can have a condition better than nm to mt or better. Thats a range of 7-10 in grading. If they made one better it would be a mess for sellers and buyers with retutns abd and upset users.

I thought the choices on ebay for selling a Raw card where- nm mnt or better, very good, good and then poor?
I have never seen these new terms.
When I select non graded card, it should have different choices than a graded card. Again, we cannot trust the seller to predict the grade the card will get if it is graded.

@@nothingbutcardboard boy I just dont remember i guess. That scale is just as bad! Ha ha. I guess if they have definitions of what the grades are we will have to deal with it. I do look at the condition the sellers list more closey along with the pictures these days. It's a crap shoot on there but I've been pretty lucky with buying raw and grading.

We need a new grading scale for modern cards.
