- The Farrier's Association of Washington State (FAWS) had their fall convention in Ellensburg, WA a month ago or so. There was a lameness evaluation and glue-on shoe demonstration performed by Dr. Mike Clark DVM of South Sound Equine Veterinary & Travis Burns CJF FWCF EE TE of Virginia- Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. It was a great demonstration of a lame horse getting hoof tested, nerve blocked, x-rayed, evaluated and then shod by Travis with two different methods of glue-on shoes. I can see the life of a horse lasting a lot longer. I am very impressed I watch Horse plus they could use this knowledge and save more horses. Thanks
The horses that they put down are not salvageable in anyway shape or form. It is done based on the guidance of a licensed vet and is the correct thing to do. I still have nightmares of the one horse with the severe leg wound.
They do what many people either don’t care to do or simply refuse to make the decision. It’s so much easier to just ship the problem off then have to do the deed and deal with the body after.

Thinking that this horse would benefit more from a poly steel natural balance shoe with the full frog support over a aluminum glue on. Protect the foot while stimulating the frog and allowing the heels to expand.
That’s been tried before and didn’t work the owner mentioned.

I found these demonstrations fascinating. I always want to learn about new materials and methods for shoeing equines. Will these materials work on draft mules given their different hoof shape?
I find the heat from the glue curing destroys the integrity of the outer hoof wall ,and in some cases the hoof becomes worse than what you started with.
