  • The D-Day Squadron is the American contingent participating in the Daks Over Normandy flyover crossing the English Channel to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 2019. The epic journey of a fleet of C-47s (military DC-3 aircraft) will honor the soldiers of the War. The D-Day Squadron departs from Waterbury Oxford Airport in Connecticut on May 19, eventually flying the Blue Spruce Route and traversing the North Atlantic.
AVweb contributor Larry Anglisano was on hand for the launch preparation and captured the formation training footage from the Flabob DC-3, caught up with the the D-Day Squadron's Moreno "Mo" Aguiari for a look at the planning and execution of this complex mission and prepared this video report.

It is so incredible to see these people taking such good care of these classic C47/DC3's. In my opinion, they are the greatest planes ever built. They were built to stand the test of time...and constructed in a way that they could survive flying in a war zone. You could shoot them full of bullets and you could keep on flying..just as long as the propellers were spinning... Amazing crafts. Thank you for keeping these planes alive.

I just wish that I could jump in that event. During my Army career I was fortunate to have been in the 1/508th INF (ABN) in Panama and did the Panama Invasion with them. The 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment which used to be part of the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII did jump into combat in Normandy. They fought in Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, and Afghanistan. This was one of the best units I have served with in my time in the Army. I wish like I said just to jump and experience what these guys in my former regiment did jumping even though it is a day time jump. Those Paratroopers back then did a night combat jump. I have jumped from a Navy version of a C-47 last year for my unit reunion of Panama Invasion vets from my unit in Lancaster TX. It was awesome to jump from an original WWII airplane once again as a Paratrooper. I would cry tears of joy just to jump this one event. Too bad finances and I would have to buy my own parachute and know how to pack my own parachute. Back in WWII at Ft. Benning Airborne School used to be 4 weeks if you survived. The week before jump week was parachute packing. I went through in 1986 and our parachutes were packed by parachute riggers and Airborne School was 3 weeks. We as students just learned how to jump in the 2 weeks and the 3rd was jump week. Would love to be there and participate....

They were talking of all the effort that had gone into organising getting the 30+ DC3/C47 together for today’s flight from Duxford to Normandy. They also discussed how absolutely unimaginable it was to think of doing the same for the 800+ DC3/C-47’s on D-day...

"Remember history so we don't repeat the mistakes". Hanne, just open your eyes and pay attention--- people repeat all the mistakes all the time.

I too saw you fly the Hudson about 5 days ago. What an experience with the rumbling engines. The noise of formation flying was incredible. I have never heard anything like it. It sent goose bumps through my body. I commented to someone what it would have been like to have been a bomber formation over Germany with the sound of thousands of engines! My father was a navigator aboard the C-47's at Normandy dropping the parachute's and towing the gliders at D-Day. He also participated at the "Bridge too Far" campaign and was awarded a medal. My father did not like to talk about the war but he mentioned the ground fire was horrific. He said anyone who had a pistol, gun, machine gun was firing aloft. In other words the ground fire was unbelieveable. My Dad mentioned that he was looking out the window at Normandy when suddenly next to him a C-47 blew up next to his airplane, apparently as a bullet had hit one of the internal gas tanks. Later in the war the Americans started using "self sealing gas tanks."

I flew the C-47 in Vietnam. I also was on a crew tasked to take one of our aircraft to Okinawa for "corrosion control" work. We flew from Saigon to Clark AFB in the Philippines. And then from there north to Okinawa. A a result we were over water on both legs. One NEAT thing about the C-47....if one has to "ditch" at sea, and the ditching causes no damage, the C-47 will actually FLOAT...almost indefinitely (as long as the sea swells are not so high). There is a recorded incident where a C-47 was ditched off the West Coast. A tug went out and towed it back to land.

Return to Normandy, at the 1:56 mark, second from left with the aircraft tail number 348608 with the yellow cockpit Id letters "CD" is "Betsy's Biscuit Bomber", a C-47B built in 1943. It was flown from the Estrella Warbirds Museum collection here at the old WWII Estrella Army Air Corp base outside of Paso Robles, California to Duxford via the old Greenland route. This aircraft's last U.S. missions were flying the Berlin Airlift, it was sold to Israel and was later purchased back from the Israeli Air Force and refurbished, there is a sign in Hebrew painted on the lavatory-door that roughly reads, "The only replacement for a Dakota, is another Dakota". The plane was a military transport it's whole life and never converted for civilian us. It still has all of it's original equipment to include the 1943 over-sized desert type sand shield air-scoops atop the engines nacelles and the gear it used for towing combat gliders at Arnhem. It has participated in many jumps and I hope they have a smooth and safe flight there and back. God bless the Veterans this day.

Greetings from another EC-47 pilot in Vietnam (360th). I don't think people realize that the C-47 was very valuable to the war effort in Vietnam... as it was in WWII.

If there are any flight simmers out there, I've been flying the same Blue Spruce route in my Manfred Jahn C-47. Join me this Saturday (May 25) at 0200z for the next leg (Prestwick to Duxford).

On the 8th & 9th June, Southwick village (just north west) of Portsmouth will turn the clock back to 1944. Planning for D-Day took place in Southwick. See www.southwickrevival.co.uk and give us a fly by if you can.

Did you notice when they showed the cockpit two (looks like modern navigation instruments) digital displays. Now we all know that this technology was not around in 1944. lol

Very exciting event! Unfortunately, probably, I will not be able to join it in UK or France :( I am glad to see among those beautiful aircraft the C-47B 43-48608 N47SJ ''Betsy's Biscuit Bomber'' which I had possibilyty to see and look around and inside in Estrella Warbid Museum in September'18 during preparation for this event. But I have one comment to this film - I see that it is true that American people do not konw the history of 2WW and the world. Based on the map (The North Atlantic Route), which is shown in this film people will recognise that such countries like Poland, Czech, Belarus, France, Norway etc were axis countries! It is not true! They were ocupied by Germany! (it is interesting - based on what I see on the map - that only Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece in Europe were allies country! In fact they were occupied by Germany also). It looks like a fake information: Polish death camps, Polish concentration camps, Polish Holocaust which were in fact German/Nazi concentration camps!!!
