I was playing bass in a band when I was young and had a rather nice "fridge" cabinet with a 15" and 2 10".... long story short, I ended up replacing the guitar player and just plugged in an old Marshall Mosfet 100 into the fridge and it sounded GREAT, never got the same sound out of a 4x12.
Damn I thought i lost my mind and the 8” sounded the best. I had my headphones on backwards!!! Hahah 12”-15” was massive !!!! Thanks for your time and videos.
Yeah! Its time for some merch Johan, in the way of "OK, lets go!" T-shirts. I would buy one knowing it would help you continue to make videos and provide such an amazing service as Kieren Moore has pointed out. I really appreciate your vids and you are by far my most watched TH-camr.
Back in the day I used to use a 1x15 cab along with my normal 12" speakers for guitar - made those low E string metal chugs just brutal! (this was before drop-tuning became a thing LOL) For awhile, Scott Ian of Anthrax had a signature amp stack from Randall with a 4x12 top and a single 15 in the bottom cab.
The audio clips were awesome,(as always) but also, really dig the textures in your scenic shots near the end of the video. Quality in sight and sound, keep up the fantastic work!
Speakers can be tough to judge unless you are in the same room with them. I tend to lean toward 10" because that is what fits into my two favorite combo tube amps. I also have extension speaker cabinets with one and two 12" speakers for larger venues. I also love the warm creamy tones that come from my little Vox Pathfinder 15 solid state amp voiced by an 8" speaker. A wonderfully complex situation. Thanks again Johan. You do awesome work for us.
Really liked the sound of 15+8 and 12+10. In my amp I have a 1x12 oval back alnico stacked on a 2x10 closed back ceramic cab. Mixing the magnets and cabinet types really worked for me.
Best combos IMO were 15 & 12, 15 & 10, and 18 & 15. 18 & 15 sounded huge together! Great video, I don't think I'd ever get to hear the comparison if not for your videos!
Good video. I'm running a 5 watt tube amp through a vintage Kustom square magnet 15" in a custom built cab. Sounds awesome! Can hit the highs all the way down to dark lows by adjusting my guitars tone knobs.
15” has been my favorite since the first time I tried it. I had always thought my sound was a bit muffled and flat with 412 cabs, then I got my Sunn 215 and it was this immediate “whoa, holy crap” improvement. Fuller frequency response with more articulation in the highs, deeper lows, and the perfect midrange for my Dual Showman. It’s an extremely underrated speaker size for guitar that, to me, isn’t so much different than a 12 as it is just BETTER in pretty much every way, and I’ve never been able to go back to 12s since, to the point that I’ve had to scrap entire sessions because I had to use a 412 and couldn’t get it to where I was happy. Insanely cool demo, as always!
I agree Steven. Even I can tell a difference in the sound but I think depending on the song and what you are shooting for there is a place for all of them. I hate when all the guitars sound alike. Maybe every time two or more guitars are playing together they should use different sizes to keep from cluttering up the place. I have a musicman with 2X10 and a Peavey with15 combo amps. High fives Johan for this video, thanks.
Good call Johan -for me 8-10 always sound compressed with load of mids - 15-18 wide open with to much low end (great for bass players) big fan of the 12' Speaker just got the right balance
I prefer the 12", but there was an interesting harmonic convergence between the 15" and the 8", almost like they were octaves or close. Got me to thinking/wondering if different speakers boost a predictable frequency based on the wavelength of their dimensions....
Check out Thiele-Small parameters of speakers made by the same company and compare things like efficiency and resonant frequency. IME, along with speaker size and cone material, those tend to have the biggest (predictable) effects on the tone of a speaker.
10" and 8" on their own sound too nasaly to my taste. But combined with bigger speakers it was a n interesting mixture. But a 18" on its own sounds just glorious.
Im glad you included 8s in your video. I'm pretty sure 12s are unbeatable for guitar but there is some thing to be said for the 8s. I put a Celestion Super 8 in an old /cheap practice amp i had and it totally rocked. They make the best practice amp speakers. In my (most humble) opinion. Take it easy ALL and thanks for the vids. BTW I love the riff !!
12 + 18 was 'where it was at' for me, I think! 10 + 12 worked well, too ... and 8 + 15, to a lesser extent, I think. Otherwise, "Ain't nobody got time for [8s]!!" Haha, I'm sure somebody loves them ... that's why people keep playing their champs etc through a 12" extension cab ... Lol ;) You da man, J! Be well! :)
Great comparo Johan. I just love that R9 of yours. I agree with Kieren that the 12+18 was my pick, but many others worked well too. I guess we will just have to get one of each! LOL! Rock on bro.
Heard like this - two speakers in separate cabs - I'd favour the 12" with either the 15" or the 18". However, to really hear how they sound in combination I'd have to hear them in one cab and linked through a properly designed crossover, so that they can supplement each other rather than overlapping frequencies too much. The smaller speakers lose too much weight without adding much useful detail. I think there's a reason why we tend to hear multi-size speaker combinations in hi-fi speakers rather than electric guitar cabs. Simple 1x12, 2x12 and 4x12 cabs work pretty well, after all, for the important guitar frequencies.
A good compare & contrast. 15 & 18 were the fullest, most 3D sounding, however in isolation, the 18 is quite muffled compared to the 15. I am guessing the 18 is SUPPOSED to be a BASS speaker am I right? 12 & 15 prob best combo, the 10 & 8" start to get too tinny and nasally, although I thought the 8 sounded a bit nicer than the 10! Not an entirely 'scientific' comparison, unless it was played with a looper and each speaker was an identical model with just a different size. BUT it gives an idea. IME the 15" speaker was the best all round speaker for clarity and depth. Great job Joh!
wow, I thought it would sound airy and phase cancel-ey in a bad way but if you pan it really wide? they all sound pretty good plus it probably helps that you did a true guitar double with different player dynamics in each speaker. honestly can't say which combo sounded best though, they all just sounded like a really good classic rock tone
I wonder how they'd sound if you calculated the speaker areas, then combined the speakers in a cab based on different speaker sizes but the same speaker area per cab. Eg 18+8, 15+10, 12+12, etc etc you know what I mean? Like an 18+8 would cover a huge tonal range.
There's a reason that the majority of combos and cabs are made with 12s. 1x12 2x12 4x12. There sound is focused with out being thin and yet they cut very well. Fender super reverbs use 410s and sound really great. But dont give you what 2x12s do. It does come down to personal taste. So put your ear to the music and you decide what's the best speaker size and sound.
Im looking for a/to have a custom build of a speaker cab right now. Was thinking a special open + closed back sloping vertical 2x12 but now Im strongly leaning towards a 1x15. They sound much better to me than 8,10 or 12. The 18 is nice but I suspect a little too dark for crisp chimey clean chorus/delay sounds.
I would be more than happy if you do this same comparison but maintaining the same cabinet size on all five speakers. You need five baffles (each one with its different sized speaker hole) to be attached to the same enclosure each time.
Just like the EVH demo where two different speaker types - brighter and darker voices - worked so well combined together, these larger-darker and smaller-brighter voice pairings also sounded good. I wonder if these combinations of dark and bright timbres, however they are achieved, are so effective because they “compensate” for one another, and the human ear has more to work with and ends up perceiving a fuller more satisfying spectrum of sound. Possibly, to the ear, redundant frequencies get cancelled out - and desirable frequencies get “cherry-picked” to produce a desirable effect. Virtually every time I hear two different sound sources paired together, for example with two microphones, it produces a similar benefit. In addition, when reviewing individual sounds in comparison to others, it becomes more obvious if one sounds less desirable than the others, but combining sounds while integrating the same source can “fix the mix”, or make the faults less noticeable. Must be fun exploring around all that beautiful countryside, cheers.
Thanks for this. The single speaker segments were more valuable to me than the comparison, as a comparison L/R IMHO only makes sense if the same signal is going to each side. Anyway, the differences are clear, however, a lot of factors go into the sound besides size: cabinet, what is it stuffed with (if at all), open back vs. closed back, ported/non-ported and of course the magnet type and size on the speaker. However, it seems clear that the bigger the speaker, the fuller the sound (which makes sense, I guess) - all the more confusing to me why the classic Bass cabinet tends to have 10" speakers rather than 12 or 15" speakers! I use a Hartke GH410 cabinet for guitar (it is made for guitar) and am quite happy with it, but would love to do a comparison against a 2x12 or 4x12!
I dont agree that the bigger speakers gave a fuller sound (tbh, to my slight surprise :)). They has more bottom, but less high-mid and high. I think that is why combining sizes can be interesting. PS 4 x 10 inch cabinet basically functions like one giant speaker with 4 drivers, so perfrct for bass ;)
Size definitely matters, that's why big people usually have deeper voices than smaller ones. I have a pair of g10L-35's in an open back cab ampeg combo. They sounded too sloppy on the low end, so I added a piece of removable plywood to tighten up the sound.
Great comparison. The tonal ranges and differences in speaker size is defined by your video. One thought, it might be easier to hear the speaker differences shown at the end, by going from small to larger, rather than large to small as done here. Everyone is different, but for me, and I suspect many people, it is easier to hear differences when tones are added rather than removed - just as going from quiet to loud is easier to discern differences than the other way around. Regardless, well done, interesting and Helpful! Thanks
Any thoughts on going with 4-8” alnico heppners or a single 12” alnico in 1955 Gibson GA-45 Maestro. It originally came with 4 gold alnico jensens but most folks run it like a GA-40-(single 12”)any insight? Just thinking I may get that fender super reverb effect but to be honest, the GA-45 is a pretty mean amp. Not much clean headroom. Gets louder up to 5-6 then just saturates.
The 12/10" combo sounds great for vintagey, bluesy tones. Apparently, that's what is in Samantha Fish's custom combo and extension cab. (she doesn't say what they are) Lot of vids of them as a trio, and her guitar tone is HUGE. Also sounds great with her cigar box guitars. I remember first seeing her live vids for Lost Myself and I Put a Spell On You, and thinking Jesus- THAT'S the sound I've been looking for! Throw some reverb on it, and go to town on that thang. (your guitar, ya pervs...)
In every combination, the larger speaker always blew the smaller away with more body. If my eyes were closed, the only one I could recognize outright is the 8", otherwise, with eyes closed, I could always tell which was the larger speaker in each pairing - but not the sizes.
Johan, how were you able to use such a small 8" speaker with a 50w head, are you using an attenuator? And if you are, does the 8" speaker have to be rate higher than the head?
I have a custom made 2x12 1x15 ll in one giant cab and while it sounds immense and puts every 4x12 Ive ever played through to shame it also weights as much as a small car so not practical in the least but it is awesome..
The type of tubes and the guitar makes a big difference. If you are playing a Stratocaster through a 6v6 that 15” would be killer. A Les Paul through a Marshall fits that 12” perfectly as the Les Paul doesn’t have spikey highs so 15” isn’t very useful. Also Marshall’s through 8 and 10 with a Les Paul will sound flubby as it just can’t handle the low end of those Humbuckers. It so interesting how each type of set-up changes what sounds good. The single coil matched 6v6 or 6L6 or even the El 34 the larger speaker is a massive difference especially with no distortion.
It's hard to choose between combinations. Re singles, for me it's 12" all day! Having said that, 10" can be great in certain situations (recording etc).
The greater contains the less. In other words, it appears as though the larger diameter speakers add more bass but do not lose the treble. Putting size aside, I do not see any disadvantage to go in with a larger speaker.
Hi, Johan! I am a little late today - realy hard days night. So, I am standing on my own 12, and green is always rools. Nice mix, btw! See you, sorry for being to much shirt. Zigfrid
@@JohanSegeborn Thank you, Johan!:-) Slowly, but OK! From 18 songs 13 are ready, last 5 we will do in the middle of September. Then will be the edition and the mastering, the hardest part of work, maybe I'll need some help. Its my first time of recording on Boss equipment, with tatally new hardware, so maybe I'll need a little help. I hope, in October the albom will be completed. Because the presentation should be in 1 of December. Now its booked for shure, so "No Give Up"! But for now I am satisfied with the result. Cheers!:-)
18" låter förvånande bra med spräck, men det är förmodligen i kombo med den mindre! Alltid kul tester! Kan tänka mig ett 2x 15"+12" kabinett till min Mesa Boogie Mark5:35 combo eller till min Vox AC10!!! 100plus på det testet Johan!
18 inch sounded so good. Anyone who can suggest a good 18inch speaker available today? This may sound a noob question. Can I use an 18 inch bass speaker for a guitar amp? Thanks for answering
for home use i found my 5 '' speaker on boss katana the best.no fizzy and playing amazing at low volumes.any celestion 12'' i tried it sound harsh fizzy and very annoying.i think i will build a cabinet with 4x5''
Great riff, great playing as always. A bit hard to hear any difference through my 2" computer speakers. The only big difference I've heard was the 8", all other sound great the 8" great but not as great as the rest! Rock Heavy
I liked the 15 the most, But I really like a good 10" speaker. I have a lead 12 with a fairly new 10" Greenback, and it's excellent, way better than the stock G10D-25 could ever be. Thinking about replacing the 10 in my Class 5 with a 10" greenback as well.
I see that 18" has some sort of beam blocker. Or is it just a structural component? It would be cool if you could compare speakers with and without beam blockers at some point! Great video! Cheers
I think the reason the 15's always sound anemic in these comparisons might be due to the way they are mic'd. because of the larger radius of the cone most of the air push is around the sides of the mic? I know he says he uses a room mic too... for some reason the 18 sounds better though? and the 12 is still best.
Wow this is showing me how useful it would be to have some different speaker sizes available here, drastic difference, all good tones. By the way did you get a new RME interface?
Christ, Johan, you maniac - you don't know what you've done. Now everyone is gonna need to get a fucking 18" cab to pair with their 12". You know what we need next? 4x18". Let's go.
Huge speakers with huge sound is a thing of a past and belong there. Or should be used at huge venues. Small speakers with tiny wimpy tone are good for bedroom practicing but that's about it. IRs is the way to go.
The only thing missing is the "Back To The Future" sized speaker.
Hahahaha
Thats great😁
that's like a 78inch speaker, or 6ft3 xD
xexexexexexexexexexxeexeex
Well said🤣
The 18" sounds awesome! The 18" and the 12" comined sounds great, I think.
Thanks Eivind!
I`ll buy two of those T-Shirts !
Lets gø
"HI" with a greenback in the background
For me with this particular experiment it would be the 15 in. Have a nice day.
Thanks! Have a good one you too
Back in the day I used to use a 1x15 cab along with my normal 12" speakers for guitar - made those low E string metal chugs just brutal! (this was before drop-tuning became a thing LOL) For awhile, Scott Ian of Anthrax had a signature amp stack from Randall with a 4x12 top and a single 15 in the bottom cab.

The 15/8'' combination gives a great Skynyrd's sound!
I can’t imagine having an 18” speaker. That’s bigger than the tires on my car!
I love this man and his passion for speakers!!!
The audio clips were awesome,(as always) but also, really dig the textures in your scenic shots near the end of the video. Quality in sight and sound, keep up the fantastic work!
My favorite was the 12 followed by the 15 and then those two combined together. Awesome 😎, Johan !
Thanks! :-) Glad to hear that!
Buzz Osborne uses that configuration in his tour rig
Buzz Breaking All the Rules. Aluminum guitars, solid state amps, 15 inch speakers.
You always have the most interesting comparisons! Thanks John!
Speakers can be tough to judge unless you are in the same room with them. I tend to lean toward 10" because that is what fits into my two favorite combo tube amps. I also have extension speaker cabinets with one and two 12" speakers for larger venues.

Fine comparison, well done! I'm glad you didn't ask us to pick a favorite, Love them all!
Thanks for sharing brother!

Thanks Brother! ;-)
I agree Steven. Even I can tell a difference in the sound but I think depending on the song and what you are shooting for there is a place for all of them. I hate when all the guitars sound alike. I occasionally add a Music Man ported 15" to my Fender combo's open backed 4x10". Very loud clean Tele sound. Thanks for the mixed size demos.
Good call Johan -for me 8-10 always sound compressed with load of mids - 15-18 wide open with to much low end (great for bass players) big fan of the 12' Speaker just got the right balance
They all sound awesome man!
The 12+18 combo is my favorite, especially because of how you used their different voices to carry different parts in the music. Sweet!
Thanks Marcel!
Got 2 4x10 with 7442 from '68 and a 1960 from 71 with pulsonics greenbacks : the mix of 10's and 12's is a dream ! 😍

How about micing an 8" thru an 18" PA, and vise-versa?
I use a 1x12 with a V30 and a DIY 2x8 with Jensen Mod 8s. Both cabs are partially open back. Sounds huge and very 3d.
Im glad you included 8s in your video. I'm pretty sure 12s are unbeatable for guitar but there is some thing to be said for the 8s. 8s are awesome for a harmonica rig well the ones I've heard anyway.

Thanks Doug, I’m really glad to hear that!
Hi! I'm an amp builder. For my next guitar amp build I want to go with a 15" speaker. What speaker should I use, suggestions please!! :-)

Ur the amp builder! Why are you asking him?!?!
Celesiton fullback 15inch
Just like the EVH demo where two different speaker types - brighter and darker voices - worked so well combined together, these larger-darker and smaller-brighter voice pairings also sounded good. I dont agree that the bigger speakers gave a fuller sound (tbh, to my slight surprise :)). They has more bottom, but less high-mid and high. I think that is why combining sizes can be interesting.

Yeah cab design and construction is a really interesting topic too
Please do comparison of EVH new speakers and his old use (first brown sound set-up)
building a custom cab with a 15" and a 10". thanks for the vid!
That tone just sounds damn tasty through any speaker.
Great comparison. The tonal ranges and differences in speaker size is

Also I wanted to hear them all on one guitar at once. Cause, well why not ?
Wow the 18 sounded great. The 15 sounded decent, the 12 sounded good but that 18 had a low mid honk,it sounded warm and full.

I remember first seeing her live vids for Lost Myself and I Put a Spell On You, and thinking Jesus- THAT'S the sound I've been looking for! Throw some reverb on it, and go to town on that thang. (your guitar, ya pervs...)
Greatgreat video about something little explored, thanks!
Thanks Juan, glad to hear that!
Cool idea and well done!
15+12 sounds best to me!
In every combination, the larger speaker always blew the smaller away with more body. If my eyes were closed, the only one I could recognize outright is the 8", otherwise, with eyes closed, I could always tell which was the larger speaker in each pairing - but not the sizes.
No way! I just commented on one of your vids yesterday that you should do this! How's that for service, guys?!! ;D Cheers! - K
Hahaha! ;-) Cheers Kieren!
Me listening on my 0.1" phone speaker:
Sounds really good.
Great vid Johan! \m/
Is that the old Stena Danica from the 80s still in service?
Would it be possible to do this comparison one speaker at a time it was hard to tell the difference with both speakers at once thankx
Hard to tell! I like the other comments but I'm going 12 in for sure. Nice video!
Johan, how were you able to use such a small 8" speaker with a 50w head, are you using an attenuator? And if you are, does the 8" speaker have to be rate higher than the head?
You’re the Bill Nye of Guitar Gear. 🙌🏻
Johan, are most of your photos/video of Sweden? Great addition to the guitar content!
Hm, 15" to my ears seem to be the sweet spot between brightness and dark low warm tone.
8 and 12 work nice.
you blow up our minds johan :D
The greater contains the less. In other words, it appears as though the larger diameter speakers add more bass but do not lose the treble. Putting size aside, I do not see any disadvantage to go in with a larger speaker.
Hi John, could you do a g10 vintage vs g12 vintage and g10 greenback vs g12 greenback video?
Yeah absolutely, I have compared vintage 10” Greenbacks to 12” Greenbacks though in this one for instance

Hi, Johan!
I am a little late today - realy hard days night. So, I am standing on my own 12, and green is always rools. Nice mix, btw! See you, sorry for being to much shirt.
Zigfrid
Hi Zigfrid! How did your recording sessions go? Cheers
Cheers!:-)
That 18 sounds so good.
18" låter förvånande bra med spräck, men det är förmodligen i kombo med den mindre! Alltid kul tester! Kan tänka mig ett 2x 15"+12" kabinett till min Mesa Boogie Mark5:35 combo eller till min Vox AC10!!!
100plus på det testet Johan!
Tackar! :-)
Id love to hear the 18, 12, and 8 combined
I like the 15s n 18s alot
Hmmm, mixing the two gives lots of good options. Thanks!!!
Thanks!
Would've been interesting to hear them all at the same time, each panned hard left and hard right.
18 inch sounded so good. Anyone who can suggest a good 18inch speaker available today?
This may sound a noob question. Can I use an 18 inch bass speaker for a guitar amp? Thanks for answering
8x15 sounds iconic
for home use i found my 5 '' speaker on boss katana the best.no fizzy and playing amazing at low volumes.any celestion 12'' i tried it sound harsh fizzy and very annoying.i think i will build a cabinet with 4x5''
Hi, the G10L-35 sounds less fizzy than the G10D-25
There is a reason why 12" speakers are the prefered guitar speaker size, but 15" sounds good too - sometimes.
I see that 18" has some sort of beam blocker. Or is it just a structural component? It would be cool if you could compare speakers with and without beam blockers at some point! Great video! Cheers
Thanks, I think its primarily a structural reinforcement. That's a great a great idea for a video actually! Cheers
Woah, That little 8" was damn near sounding like Lynyrd Skynyrd coming through the speaker. RIP Gary Rossington & The original LS band.
Great Video
Whats that little baby Marshall Johan? Doesn't look like a lead 12. Lead 20 perhaps?
I think the reason the 15's always sound anemic in these comparisons might be due to the way they are mic'd. because of the larger radius of the cone most of the air push is around the sides of the mic? I know he says he uses a room mic too... for some reason the 18 sounds better though? and the 12 is still best.
Wow this is showing me how useful it would be to have some different speaker sizes available here, drastic difference, all good tones. By the way did you get a new RME interface?
Best channel 🎸🎸🎸
Thanks my friend! :-)
Buzz Osborne uses A 15in and a 12in speaker in his tour rig
Yeah Man, the 18 sounds the most fluid sound wise that would be my vote
Christ, Johan, you maniac - you don't know what you've done. Now everyone is gonna need to get a fucking 18" cab to pair with their 12".
You know what we need next? 4x18". Let's go.
12 + 15 is a match made in heaven
18 is my favorite
Just had another listen, seems 12 is right in the tonal range most players desire. 8 is nasal, 18 too bassy.
i love the sound of 12"+18"
Huge speakers with huge sound is a thing of a past and belong there. Or should be used at huge venues. Small speakers with tiny wimpy tone are good for bedroom practicing but that's about it. IRs is the way to go.
