    A note for Wish: the spell Wish in 5e is almost always best used to cast basically *any spell in the game*, without needing it to be known or prepared, so the Wish card is doing a very good representation of that

    I really like Wish, because one of the stated uses of Wish in 5e is the ability to cast any spell of level 8 or lower (in fact, it's the only use of Wish that doesn't give you a chance of literally being unable to use Wish ever again.) In essence, it lets you cast any spell you want, but you have to spend extra resources to do so (a level 9 spell slot instead of whatever spell slot the spell you're casting actually is.)
    In MtG, Wish allows you to cast any spell you want (that's in your sideboard, at least) BUT you have to spend extra resources to do so, in this case mana. It's a really good execution of that idea.

After enduring that Stress, each time you Cast a Spell until you finish a Long Rest, you take 1d10 necrotic damage per level of that spell. This damage can't be reduced or prevented in any way. In addition, your Strength drops to 3, if it isn't 3 or lower already, for 2d4 days. For each of those days that you spend Resting and doing nothing more than light activity, your remaining recovery time decreases by 2 days. Finally, there is a 33 percent chance that you are unable to cast wish ever again if you suffer this Stress."

    I'd have loved the Tarrasque as a cheap powerful creature that comes in with some kind of "Slumber counters" or something, "The Tarrasque cannot attack of block when it has slumber counters on it", some way to remove the counters, And if it would be destroyed, put some number of slumber counters on it and regenerate it.
    Also, regarding Mimic: I think it should be an uncastable creature, and have "Sacrifice an artifact: Put Mimic from your hand onto the battlefield." And then it leads to situations of someone attacking you and you go "Ha-ha, it turns out that that innocuous treasure token I had was a monster I can block with the whole time!" It being a "put into play" effect, rather than "Casting it with flash" is meant to invoke the idea that you're not even summoning it, it was already there the whole time. And it being any artifact is because mimics don't Have to be chests.

    As far as I'm aware the Tarrasque has always been a bit of a joke. It's baby's first minmax challenge. 4e was balanced and gamey enough that it might actually have been a challenge (but my god 4e combat could be a slog, so it's hard to say), but I know that in 3.5e there were sub-lvl-10 builds that could reliably kill it, mostly because it had abysmal touch AC. Comparing 4e and 5e numbers is irrelevant, 5e had a major number crunch, a basic lvl 1 goblin warrior in 4e had 29hp and 17 AC, a lvl 3 goblin caster had 46hp and 17 AC. The numbers are just incomparable.
    Most of the Tarrasque's wimpiness is the curse of MM1. Early monster manuals get power-crept out of relevance and generally have worse designed monsters. The Tarrasque is iconic enough that it's always in the first monster manual.
    It also suffers from being a big dumb brute. There aren't many levers you can pull to balance it. It's either a rocket-tag nightmare or a wet noodle because high level damage (and even death) is pretty curable, it's not a spellcaster so it doesn't have any way to make that damage stick without 1-turn party wiping (multiple times because Contingency). In terms of durability it misses out on the juicy magical defences so AC and HP are the only real levers you can toggle, it either becomes an unhittable brick that makes martials irrelevant and forces the Wizard to punt it into a demiplane or it's pretty easily blendable by a buffed-up fightsman.
    5e Tarrasque is uniquely wimpy in how easy it is to put down for good though. Previous versions had chunky regeneration and/or various anti-death clauses that allowed the bastard to keep coming back unless you pulled shenanigans (suffocation was a popular option, as was dunking it into planes that dealt constant damage). You'd win a straight-up fight in any edition, but in 5e that's it, it stays dead.

    54:25 HUGE flavor fail here: Magic Missile’s MTG card says it can’t be countered. This is because Magic Missile the D&D spell does not require attack rolls. It just automagically deals damage to its target. The Tarrasque in D&D, however, has the ability to reflect magical projectiles when they use attack rolls. But the Tarrasque was also given the added on effect of “or if it gets targeted by Magic Missile,” seeing as Magic Missile would automatically hit, but would just bounce right off its reflective armor. But in _MTG,_ this is symbolized by _WARD,_ and YA WANNA KNOW THE FUN THING ABOUT WARD? It COUNTERS things that target it that fail to pay the cost. But MAGIC MISSILE CAN’T BE COUNTERED.
    So the D&D Tarrasque creature has a built-in defense against the D&D Magic Missile spell’s special feature, but the MTG Magic Missile spell has a built-in NULLIFICATION of the MTG Tarrasque Creatures’s special feature!!

  • @stephenlong9806
    @stephenlong9806 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Tarrasques actually has warding to represent its legendary resistances, where players in dnd will have to spend spells and resources to whittle them down before they can actually target it with anything.

  • @anneaunyme
    @anneaunyme 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    **Magic Missile** has things to say about it: Both the MtG card and the D&D spell are bad options if you just want to harm one big creature but have the advantage that it can't miss (or can't be countered for the card) and that you can split the missile to several targets.
    The "can't be countered" part is a bit of a flavor fail for how it interacts with the Tarrasque: the Tarrasque is supposed to be nearly immune to that specific spell but, as it can't be countered, her ward 10 ability won't apply against magic missile. That's probably more of a fail on the side of the Tarrasque, though.

In dnd, the maneuver let's you give a creature temporary hit points, which is exactly what the card does by boosting the toughness. It's also great in the fact that you can target 2 creatures, meaning one is issuing the command just like in dnd.

    On Wish, one of its big abilities is allowing you to cast any other spell of lesser spell level. So casting it to then cast a spell from your sideboard is super flavorful.

    52:00 There is a splitting Ooze that halfs in size everytime it is "killed"; Mitotic Slime (M11) creates Tokens half it's size which in turn create Tokens half their size, so it goes from 1 4/4 to 2 2/2's to 4 1/1s
    And Splitting Ooze (CN2) allows you to create one monstrous ooze after the other, creating tokens of the base creature

    In the Dungeon of the Mad Mage, the Lost Level ends in a room that allows adventurers to learn about the dungeon via magic. The Deep Mines contain the lair of a wizard who's been studying the dungeon, allowing you to learn more.
    But the "Dungeon Level" is a mystery to me. I guess there's a map?

    The spell Wish in DnD allows you to cast any spell of 8th level or lower, and the Wish card in MtG allows you to cast any spell from your sideboard.

  • @Antare5
    @Antare5 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    another little bonus for the design of "wish:" In 5th Edition you can use wish to cast any spell up to 8th level in the game, most notably letting you have access to spells outside of the spells you know or even spells outside of what your class would otherwise have access to altogether. Pulling a card from your sideboard and thus out of your deck (your 'spells known' as it were) feels delightfully on theme.
    Thumbs up!

    Ellywick recently got a new bit of lore in the new Wild Beyond the Witchlight sourcebook/adventure. She's actually canonically a planeswalker now, and is so powerful, she's unstatted (something reserved for deities and planewalkers). Boo is generally believed to be an actual miniature Giant Space Hamster by the fanbase. Xanathar has a very cool quirk with his ability that got looked over (SPOILERS FOR WATERDEEP: DRAGON HIEST) The Xanathar actually has DM-limited omniscience. According to the adventure rules. **He actually knows everything the DM knows at all times.** He eve has access to the Monster Manual, the DMG, and even the players' personal character sheets! This is why he is able to steal from opponents' decks and use their cards.

    There's one thing that the Mimic card does that the Treasure Chest card should have built in- Mimic is listed as the subtype 'Treasure.' It only aids a few cards for synergy, but the idea that other cards are 'tricked' into having their function work with the Mimic was the kind of flavor that ties it better with the MtG leudonar than the Treasure Chest did

    Froghemoth actually has a lot of lore from earlier editions (going back to Temple of the Frog). I haven't read it, but Frog God Games was clearly pretty inspired by whatever was in it, and in their supplements that reference the Froghemoth it's divinity is rooted in swamps and trapping souls preventing them from moving on to their final rest. This causes some friction with other beings at similar power levels because souls of the penitent are how you measure the power of divine beings. All that to say, I think Froghemoth's flavour is very in-line with its lore.

    When you were talking about Ochre Jelly, you mentioned that there were no other oozes in magic that have that splitting ability. However, there was card previously printed that splits when it dies, mitotic slime. It’s an ooze that starts as a 4/4 and splits into two 2/2s which each split into two 1/1s.
    Also there is a card called splitting slime that while not exactly having the split mechanic, does at least reference it in flavor and has a somewhat parallel ability.

    Fun fact with Asmodeus;
    According to some deep lore, his Devil form is actually a false projection. His true form is an evil Coatle (winged snake thing) who got dumpstered so hard he fell all the way to the 9th Hell, and his body is literally that layer.
    Hes actually trapped there while his body recovers, ergo not being a Planeswalker right now.

    I think the direct comparison of stats between 4th and 5th edition for the Tarrasque isn't very helpful, considering that a max level party in 4e will be getting like, +30 to attack rolls, while a 5e party would be lucky to get half that.

    I personally would’ve given the Gaea’s cradle elf to the Circle of the Shepard, since that’s the circle associated with summoning large numbers of creatures and buffing them to fight for you.
    The subclass that gives you benefits based on the number of creatures on your team getting the Gaea’s cradle effect would be the best flavour, IMO. Great vid by the way!

    Another nice thing about critical hit is the flavor text, it says that this is how you can kill undead, and in the monster manual, zombies have undead fortitude, which lets them roll a con save when they take damage that would kill them and if they succeed they don't die, but if they take radiant damage or a critical hit, they don't make the con save and just die

    Pausing at the Tarrasque. I was introduced in 2nd edition and in that, the Tarrasque's thAC0(the inversed math equation they used for being able to hit your target) was a negative number, which somehow translated (written on the Monster Manual page for the Tarrasque) to mean that the PC's could only accidentally hit the Tarrasque with a weapon, meaning a roll of 1 was the only way to hit it. 😂
