Riding my '83 GL1100 for 10 tears now I can only relate to your title. It's a great machine, relatively easy to maintain, even if you are not a great mechanic like myself, and a pleasure to master a bike like this in every corner you take. Sure it's a heavy bike, but it all flows away when you start riding. Thanks for the detailed video😎👍
Nice review; thanks. As for uprighting a heavy bike that is resting on its side stand, try turning the front wheel of the bike all the way to the right first before uprighting it. You may find it easier to upright it that way. And when you park a bike on its sidestand, you can also turn the front wheel to the right too. The lean angle is shorter that way.
Very nice! I now have a 1982 Honda Goldwing that I have owned for almost 3yrs and i actually love it, although I`m still working on getting it running and looking better after a previous owner passed away and it was neglected for several yrs.
i own a 83 standard, (the last year of the 1100) the gearing was changed for 83, 5th is now O/D it has a light on the tach where your air shock light is, also the 83 had linked brakes & the introduction of trac anti dive on the front forks, i can get 200 miles out of a tank (USA gallon) averaging around 42mpg, cruising at 60-65 i see you like to rev yours a bit, so your fuel consumption is probably low to mid 30's, as those four carbs like to drink fuel at higher revs. Also don't forget the 1200 was 4 cylinder also, the 6 cylinder was introduced with the 1500.
It's noteworthy that Honda introduced fuel injection with the top-of-the-line 1985 GL1200 LTD.Again offering it in '86 & '87.For 1988 Honda, however, did not offer fuel injection on it's ground-breaking, tour-de-force Gold Wing 1500. Nor would Honda upgrade the 1500's fuel delivery system for it's entire production run. That would have to wait til the debut of the next gen GL1800 series.
I have an 83 aspencade …I purchased it new…still have it….was out on it yesterday (5-13-24)….wings are great bikes …..only problem now is hard to get parts for a 40 yr old bike….
I was out on the gl1100 yesterday too did 200 miles. But in a strange twist, i saw another gl1100 on the way back in my town. Hard to believe they are still out there and riding.
One of the best things about these bikes is how affordable they are. You can buy a running and driving gl1100 for under 2k$ that you csn hop on and drive anywhere. 150k miles is normal for these. I love mine
Maybe so but my first ever motorcycle was the Gl1500 1999se 1999 and it was fine until they bought out the GL1800 and then I couldn't find any parts for it. Finding anything for this bike is going to be almost impossible especially if a cage driving it's you then basically your screwed.
I had a 83 GL1100 sold it and bought a 95 GL1500. In some ways that 1100 had a few features that I kind of miss like a digital dash which showed what gear you were in and it told you the outside air temperature.
good review I have had 4 of them 81 82 and 83 a thing you probably don't no. the oil sight glass has a glass wiper in it takes a flat screwdriver to use if your looking for the glass it is under right hand cylinders. I way 165 LBS an 5f' 8 I have no problems at all with weight and I now ride a 01 gl 1800 at just over 900 lb's
Thank you. Removed all the interstate fairings and now i can get some wind on me. But the bike does not sound as good on video with the wind hitting you. Might have to go back to the interstate trim.
Love my 82 interstate ive owned it about a year and just bought another 83 for parts or maybe offroad adventure build. They are so cheap to buy these days.
The '81-'82 GL500I and '83 GL650I Silverwing Interstates have many of the same features, such as the same fairing. The panniers and trunk are smaller and narrower, but the panniers are easily removable.
I know exactly what your talking about with the lean on kickstand. I have the same issue with my Honda vtX 1800c. My vtX is even a good bit heavier than that Goldwing.
If you really want to scare yourself silly just head over to your local BMW motorrad dealer and try lifting their heritage model R-18 Transcontinental off it's sidestand!!! BTW, I feel that BMW's using the Transcontinental name is an homage to Honda's Interstate. And as much as critics point out that BMW is targeting H-D with their R-18 line-up, I contend that the Gold Wing is the natural rival. There are numerous similarities between the two brands beginning with a longitudinally mounted Flat or boxer type engine.
i have a 1981, some problem , miror , is bad , for the rest i like this little bike, go off road with good tire :) mine is like brent new, no scratch , just rebuitl carbs and brake run great and for sale in canada
Yours is missing the glovebox! No joke, there’s a tray that goes on top of the air box inside the false tank. It’s shaped perfectly for the cavity so it doesn’t move around or anything
It’s to bad, you can’t even give these bikes away, can’t ride 2 wheelers now, no one wants them anymore, I really enjoyed all the miles I put on, 82, 1100, 83, 1100, paint is still beautiful,
I have a Gl1500 1999se and a GL1800 2009. I wasn't a huge fan of this bike but agree it is a lovely bike. I really liked my gl1500 but it is becoming increasingly difficult to find parts for. I don't know if I could buy this bike and realistically ride it the way I do because I don't think I can find any parts for it.
The cigarette lighter wasn't there so much to light cigarettes, as it was to provide an outlet for things like electrically heated gloves, and other 12V peripherals. You know, Goldwing Rider types...
Wait untill you forget to latch the cover down on the saddle bag and it goes flying off down the highway and a tractor trailer goes running it over .. Thats exactly what happened to my Dad on his early 2000 Kawasaki Voyager.. Thats why I liked his Gl 1100 saddlebags better they were the drop down hinged
All the Goldwing bikes are very good. But none of them have tall enough gears for modern 80mph roadways. Every Japanese motorcycle seems to be geared only for city commuting or racing. They clearly have a secret handshake agreement with oil companies to keep the RPM's as high as possible at cruising speeds.
HELLO VH! I have the same exact bike! Same color and everything except for I have the conversion kit to make it into a trike! I really enjoyed watching your video, every part you went over was so familiar with me! My next step is to do a radiator flush and fill because it seems to run just a little bit hot of course I do live in the treasure coast Florida where the average temperature is between 88 and 100° every day! BTW the, 'ALT' is an Altimeter, you set the needle to your height above sea level! Here is the link to mine: th-cam.com/video/apy2_-6vFmY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xigMsEfGKyyC-wMT
No big deal. Most the riding public uses these terms interchangeably. To Honda's credit they always classified it as a "flat" type. The late nineties Valkyries were officially named the GL1500-F6C or simply F6C. What ruffles my feathers is H-D, the so-called "Motor Company" insistence on calling it's V-twins, w/east-to-west cranks, as longitudinally mounted. To the best of my knowledge only Moto Guzzi and Honda (GL650) have ever produced a north-to-south longitudinally mounted V-twins.
I know if you mentioned Honda GW GL 1100 Aspencade mines a 83 its got everything the Intestate offers ( I think ) but it has Digital dash, on board pump to control the air ride, electronic cruise control, theft alarm with the Hondaline /Clarion CB,Stereo,Intercom & WAYWAY too much chrome its just dripping with it and whole shit load lights I could do with out
Hello…I have the 83 aspencade also…I purchased it new in 83…I parked it in 93 and found an old gold wing mechanic who got it running again….i still need a few things to get her up to safety ….getting parts for it has been difficult…. I am looking for a gold wing club to find others with this old bike and get some ideas for after market options…example my radio is not working
Someone that actually going into detail about the whole bike! That is awesome thank you!
I love bikes
I was a motorcycle mechanic at this time. Each interstate my boss sold usually had $1,000 worth of accessories installed. Kept me busy
How many carburetors does that bad boy have and how hard are they to synchronize
@@Dpknox I think 4, i have a 1982 aspencade and i have never had to touch the carbs lol. something about these machines they just work.

I just sold my 85’ Interstate and Limited
I really love the look of the 1100 with the round headlight.
This is an EXCELLENT video. Thank you for posting!
I owned one of these in the early 90s, I loved the low center of gravity, smoothness and torque.
What a beautiful old motorcycle! I hope you get to take it on a nice long trip, and experience what the old Gold Wings were all about.
Nice review; thanks. As for uprighting a heavy bike that is resting on its side stand, try turning the front wheel of the bike all the way to the right first before uprighting it. Do you have the interstate version?
@@VehicleHunter I have the Aspencade version!
The time & effort spent will all be worth wild. The payoff is phenomenal! Good Luck!!
I have a 1980 Goldwing. I think its a standard model but it has a Vetter kit. Absolutely love the bike and my Fiancé learned to ride on it.
That’s a big bike to learn on
That's my Baby! 🙂 LOVED that Steel Steed so much!!!
My GL1100 "Interstate" was a true joy to ride. I wish I still had it. Mine was identical to the one featured in your video.
It's a great bike to ride
Hello, I am owner of exactly the same bike from 1998, so 25 years together.....
Don't need one, but I can buy this same bike that has been sitting for like $500 in RI . They seem pretty cool. Nice video, thanks
For me this is the best looking Gold-Wing model of the lot...
Loved my ‘81. Vetter fairing, bags and trunk. Bought it in ‘06 with 60,000 km on it. Put 105,000 on it in ten years, never let me down.
GREAT review - very informative
Awesome Awesome, can't wait to get me one! Someday I will
I have exactly the same one, 81 years old. Only black. and with a sidecar.

Grand Luxury, Nice Bike you have there,
I own a one owner 1983 GL 1100 Interstate, I'm the 2nd owner.
Hearing you talk about cigarette lighters got me feeling old....😂😂❤❤
WOW, what a great old bike. I'm definitely jealous.

I had to look up the digital dash on the gl1100. It looks great, i wish i had that too on mine. It was the Aspencade that had all the nice features
Curiously, the GL1500 was also carburated and never upgraded to fuel injection during its over decade of production.🤔

I think people watching this might think I need to hit the gym a bit more. Until they try it!
Me too! I have discovered that myself with the lean on the kickstand! I`ve been looking into ways too extend that thing to improve the lean some.

Just bought myself a gl100 acpencade very anxious to ride. Quite the difference from my cb900
That's a big 10-4 on that kickstand I had to weld an extra plate on the bottom
Love that bike.
Might want to change that rear tire pretty soon (I know this is a year ago :) )
i have a 1981, some problem , miror , is bad , for the rest i like this little bike, go off road with good tire :) mine is like brent new, no scratch , just rebuitl carbs and brake run great and for sale in canada
I would put a kick stand 'foot' on it. That will lengthen it a little!
Thats a great idea

That is a big concern with these older bikes. Even with the legendary reliability of goldwings imagine being stuck somewhere needing something.
The cigarette lighter wasn't there so much to light cigarettes, as it was to provide an outlet for things like electrically heated gloves, and other 12V peripherals. You know, Goldwing Rider types...
Power to the people!👍
11:00 those bikes would go faster than 85 mph, back then, the government limited speedometers to 85 mph.
Turn the handlebars all the way to the right, and she goes up effortlessly
It sounds like a Porsche from the 80's.
It does!
If you could put handlebars on butter, you would have a Goldwing. S m o o t h.
Get rid of the plastic, put on a small windshield and ride!
just picked up one 2 days ago...cant wait to put the sawsall to it and start making something fun!
What are you planning on doing?

I believe that bike has a Kickstart
Turn the motorcycle front wheel to the Right and it's simple to to raise it off the kickstand.
A good buy.
To me,the Aspecade is the best looking Goldwing

the fork of the sidestand will probably be opened in stead of parallel
GL for Goldwing NO, GL is for GRAND LUXURY! Goofy but true.

Must be the wrong speedometer, top speed is 134mph.

Your kick stand is too short.
Funny you have that many miles, most bikes I see have little mileage, people just don’t ride
Is a flat 4 not a boxer if you are going to put a video up about something best you do your research first.
