ahhhh what a beautiful video. i lived up by the girls school
at the time, and still live in wallington. that brown office block which you see a small flash of just after the rail bridge, on the right at the bottom of the high street, the canon building..is where i am now. yes, major differences, sadly that distinctive church was demolished some 10 years later and also the car park next to that tall block of flats (Rosemount) was demolished as part of the new sainsburys development. Lots of shops i so fondly remember in the square long gone now and that footbridge too!! lots still look the same which is super lovely. top stuff to you
buddy for filming this at the time. also lots of
    very famous actors and
singers who would of been around then, now sadly
    no
longer with us. awwww good old
days guys..and it was british rail!!!
    hehe

I was 5 when this video was filmed. Wallington still looks more or less the same. biggest differences are the reduction of trees, and the church & cavalier pub which has ben replaced by that massive Sainsburys.
Wallington when I was younger was definitely more of a country town then compared to today. Even though we were still part of Greater London, we always referred to ourselves as Surrey. It's still a great place to live, but it's definitely not the same town from the video.

I used to live right in the flats (Braybrook court??) just next to Holy trinity church at this time. Every Friday we used to do a food shop and Superdrug shop and if I was good, I was allowed Hubba Bubba gum and Panda pop drink whilst I sat outside on the concrete benches. 😆 Moved to the Helier estate in 88.

I was 14 at that time. The 157 and 154 were the buses I took to school. That might have even been me crossing at the pelican crossing, you never know. I practically lived n the library lol book work that I was. Although Sutton library was better. I worked in Granada tv rentals as a Saturday girl, but usually in the Croydon branch. My mum worked round the corner from that Christian book shop in the accounting firm. Haven't been back there for over 20 years. Memories!

I lived at 24 Rosemount 1966-1971 my family was one of the first to move in - it was a diplomatic ghetto with many foreign government representatives like my father as tenants. I attended school "across the border" in Croydon. Wallington was very "country" then and Surrey, not London was the point of reference as the GLC was only created the year before. I last saw Wallington in 2009, still some green spaces like nearby Beddington Park and the Grove in Carshalton but really run down. Budget cuts I suppose, what a shame.

I lived in Wallington in the 1980's. To me this was middle England, even quite posh in those days. Now its a typical squalid English dump with lots of single Mums and louts. And also more Islam because the pubs are all closing including the Windmill shown in this video. All very sad.

I found the narration on this somewhat patronising..."There's a police station, look. The sign says "POLICE"." Really. "There's the court. C-R-O-W-N C-O-U-R-T. There's a butchers, there's a bakers!" You don't have to point out the name and purpose of each shop, you make it sound as though you're a presenter on "Sesame Street" !

OUR UNUSUAL NEIGHBOURS AND LOCAL HISTORY IN SURREY - CHEAM, EPSOM, SUTTON, WEYBRIDGE & WALLINGTON
Few people living in Surrey really know their neighbours but how would you know your neighbour if he or she worked for MI6? Most who knew Bill Fairclough didn’t have a clue that from the seventies he was a secret agent (MI6 codename JJ) working for various intelligence agencies. What’s more they had no idea he was following in his parents’ footsteps. So if you lived, worked in or visited any of these places you may well have unwittingly encountered Fairclough and his colleagues, been their neighbours or inhabited the houses they lived in. A quick web-search will even disclose some of the addresses where they lived. Mind you, if you live in any of them now, best sweep them for bugs!
Details including some full addresses of where Bill Fairclough et al lived and worked are given in most of Bill Fairclough’s bios on the web such as can be found at everipedia.org/wiki/lang_en/bill-fairclough. If you were as fascinated as we were, you can also read the raw fact based thriller Beyond Enkription, the first stand-alone novel to be released in The Burlington Files series (theburlingtonfiles.org/#/reviews). It’s a memorable and distinctively different noir espionage thriller based on his and his family’s experiences in 1974 and he still seems to be operational as Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings might have noticed (theburlingtonfiles.org/news_2021.07.21.php).
