  • Carshalton is a suburb of London in Surrey. Once a quiet village, now a busy through town en route to central London. However many features from the past are still present: The village pond, Anne Boleyn's well , the old Fire Engine house and a Victorian Orangery.
I am joined by a number of my regular viewers, Emilie Champion, Maya, and Marq English, to explore these historic artifacts as I rush them along in order to capture it all within our allotted ten minutes.

I loved Carshalton Ponds as a child . The number of cars that ended up in the ponds on a Fri or Saturday night was a regular occurrence.

Hi Richard, I just stumbled upon your video. I really enjoyed it, I was born in Carshalton (2 mins walk from the ponds), and when I was 8 we moved to Carshalton Beeches, where I lived until I was 25. A few years I later moved to New Zealand, where I live now. Your video brought back some great memories. New Zealand is a great place, but I do miss the UK very much, so really appreciate you making this video. Cheers.
PS: In my view, Carshalton has and will always be in Surrey😀

It's part of the London Borough of Sutton, but a lot of people in the outer London boroughs still use the old county names from before they were swallowed up by 'Greater London' (which was abolished by Mrs Thatcher anyway). So people still refer to 'Bromley, Kent', or 'Romford, Essex', or 'Richmond, Surrey', whatever the bureaucrats tell them.

Honestly these Greater London areas will always be by heart the historic counties in terms of the atmosphere - carshalton is definitely a Surrey vibe and not a London vibe at all

Many of the gardens in those roads just off the High Street had fruit trees growing in them. I assume the original bigger houses had orchards that got divided up as new developments created the current houses and their smaller gardens. Sadly, most of the trees have been felled as people couldn't be bothered with the apple fall or their maintenance or just wanted lawns without trees getting in the way.

The Wandle does not start at the ponds and certainly does not flow upstream to Beddington Park ! In fact there are half a dozen statements in this which are entirely wrong.

I live in Carshalton too - the million pound+ houses are all in the south part of the Beeches area (for the area you're in there, you're looking at £850k at the very most for a spacious and attractive 4/5 bed). Prices aren't as steep here as other parts of outer SW London (Richmond, Kingston etc).

That seems a lot to me - I bought my humble Victorian terrace 2 up 2 down for £46,500 - but that was nearly 30 year ago. I don't know how people can afford to buy anything these days.

I follow your channel as you've recently been making some great video content on the various 'agendas' going on globally.
However, have also been interested in your older productions, such as this one. I was born in Carshalton and lived there for 32 years before moving to Poole in Dorset (10 years) and now Durham (County Durham!) for the last 1.5 years. Still miss my old stomping ground of Carshalton though and hope to go back sometime this year to visit.
Great video too and interesting snippets of history.

There is plenty of good reasons why Anne Boleyn may have used the well since it was en route from Carew Manor (Beddington Park) which was owned by Anne's cousin and where her and Henry VIII spent some time. Its half way to Nonesuch Palace at Banstead. A good Well was important en their route between the two . In addition the church was there well before and probably would have drawn some hostelry for passing travelers. I'm not sure why that chap thinks the dates are all wrong since we have proof that Henry visited the Carew Family at that time to meet Anne. The story of the Spring is probably just nonsense since the Spring was there for centuries before her.

I was baptised at All Saints (Mum & Dad at the time evidently felt pressured into paying their dues to the Omnipotent Bearded Sky Wizard!!). As I've just said in one of your other posts, I was obsessed with Local History from aged 5... I still have my drawings of the 'Skull & Crossbones' graves in the All Saints' graveyard that I did in c.1976. The 'skull and crossbone' graves are, if I recall, along the south side of the church. I've not been back there since about 1977. I really must do so!... Me and my sisters probably knew every ancient stone, old spring-outlfow (now long buried and/or dried up!), old local legend, old tree and old 'nook and cranny' within 3 miles of the Wandle north of Butter Hill. I have my scrapbooks of leaves we collected each year from 1972 to 1975 from the UK's largest London Plane Tree (which I think is visible in the background, sadly unmentioned. at about the 2 minute mark). What amazes me is that old Surrey residents, in the 1970s, had "rural" accents... Such accents rapidly died out, it seems, with the generation that expired in the 1970/80s. Now we all sound the same!!
P.S. Who is Mya? She looks stunning!!!

The name 'Nonsuch' of Nonsuch Park in nearby Cheam that you mentioned, was so named because there was None Such like the palace that Henry VIII had built there, I think for Anne Boleyn. The position of the palace is marked with stone markers in the Park, but sadly the building was demolished soon after it was built, and the stone robbed out for making local buildings.
