  • Simon Richardson and Jack Thurston could not be more different when it comes to cycling. For Si nothing beats smashing it round his local "lung-buster" bike route and smashing KOMs and PBs. Jack, however, takes cycling in the slow lane to the next level, stopping at all the sights, even taking a thermos full of tea with him! But could Si learn a thing or two from the slow cyclist? Jack thinks he can, and takes him on his local route to show him why slow cycling is so great!

At last! Some common sense. The wonderful thing about this video is that it is inclusive. When I was younger every ride was a time trial and now i usually follow this way of cycling with only the occasional all out lung buster. The photos taken monthly from the same place are a great way to get a perspective of both time and place. Enjoy cycling everyone.

I loved this video. I’m pretty competitive with myself, but honestly it’s nice to have a reminder that cycling is more than just watts, mph, finding ways to drop 50 grams of weight.
Work hard, but if you’re obsessed about mph as a recreational rider you’ll suck the fun out of it. I promise nobody I know gives AF about my watts, but I know plenty of people who would love to hear about the preserve I rode to or the waterfall I saw in my route.

@@JamSa85 Well, yes. But there's a fine line between really having a ball and "not enjoying it." Most cyclists I've known love suffering! I've only recently found this channel but it is fast becoming one of my favourites. A little over a year ago I had my 2nd hip replacement mid 30's. Since that time I have really gotten into cycling. I really appreciate the range of topics that are covered on this channel, but this one hit bullseye for me. I enjoy discovering all the routes and scenery out there. I'll scan open street map, look for quiet trails and lanes and pick my next destination. I'm sure I'm not alone on this but from time to time thoughts can feel quite heavy. Nothing soothes them more than just getting out on my mountain bike and slow rolling from time to time to either see a family of Deer in the woods, a hidden stream, an old avenue of trees or appreciate birdsong at sunset. I love cycling.

A huge thumbs up from me. I'm a UK expat, left as a child to emigrate to Canada, and the UK countryside has never left me. On gigs back in the UK (my family returned forty years ago, but returned to Somerset and Devon, cycling there is magnificent) I used to glory in cycling the back lanes from one destination to another, and this vid captures why.
True story, cycling from the Blackdown Hills to just outside of Williton: "Excuse me Sir, I'm looking for the turn to get to Bicknoller". Answer: "Well you've got to go up to the main road, turn left, then right, etc, etc". I stated: "But I want to take all the lovely back lanes". Answer: "Well if you don't take the main road ('A' road) you can't get there from here".
That's when I started buying the OS 'Pathfinder' maps (1:15,000 1 don't know if they're still available) and a compass and found the profuse amount of glorious back lanes than many Brits don't seem to realize exist.
And perhaps it's just as well. Some hadn't been driven on for years save for a local farmer.
I can't state how much this vid has awakened magnificent memories. I might be back there next Summer, I must...

Slow cycling is the only riding we do. We're older and like to explore and occasionally tour. We always stop for picnics, sometimes carry a flask of tea, and always explore the quiet lanes. Some of our rides are quite long and in a 4 to 12 hour day we might go 60 to 100 miles but more often 20 to 40. We carry lightweight chairs which I thoroughly recommend. Taking time to unpack your chair ensures comfort and encourages taking a little longer on those stops in the seldom viewed beauty spots that abound. Great item for us non-racing folk. 👍

I have learned to just take it easier. I enjoy the rides more. My arse and wrists don’t hurt so much and, if they do hurt, it is obviously time for another coffee and maybe a bun.
GCN to my mind is getting better as it is embracing more than just high speed ultra light Lycra clad cycling. I enjoy the high speed stuff but enjoy the variety of off road, recumbents, cargo bikes, and plain mad stuff. More power to your knees. Thanks.

I was you back when dinosaurs ruled the planet (late '70s) and now I'm your pal. I ride a Specialized Roll 2.0 single-8, upright, with mirrors and fenders and lights everywhere (and bikepacking racks front and rear) and am departing on an around-the-world trip next April with a planned pass through Iowa in time for the RAGBRAI's 50th running. One of the hardest things for me was what your friend noted: slowing down is hard! I raced as a young adult and I'm used to running every gear to the top speed you can get! It took me months to slow my ride to between 10 and 12 MPH and now I enjoy riding along just looking at my surroundings.
I'll be in your part of the world in 2023...
...tooling along at a leisurely 12 MPH. :D
    Stay safe out there!

I am a slow cyclist. Mostly on the part of me being overweight and asthmatic lol, but still I rarely ride faster than 12mph (19kph). If that means it take me 4 hours to ride 20 miles (32km) so be it. Still develop a strong body, even when riding at a jogger's pace, and you get to see the scenery more with your eyes up than with your head down to tuck into the wind.
I can't wait for our city to finish their sections of the local Greenway project, that way I can have a nice, uninterrupted 47 mile (76km) trip through 7 cities. Just fill a backpack with 4.5 liters of water and ride until I can't ride anymore.

In the first lockdown, when we had to stay close to home for our exercise, I started to take my MTB out for rides rather than my road bike. I discovered a whole network of lost lanes and trails on my doorstep. Now, 2 years later, most of my riding is on the lanes and trails away from traffic, soaking in the surroundings.

Ladies and gentlemen, Si's first and last slow ride. I have friends like Si, can't ever be bothered to stop for a break or to admire a view. Always training for some non-existent race. I follow the polarized training method, so while I do have a few days a week where I do intervals and ride much harder than normal, 80-90% of my time on a bike is at base effort, and it makes the rides so much more enjoyable. I live in the country in Central Florida, so there are some great views to be had on my daily rides. My advice to everyone would be to take at least a few days a week to slow down, build some base fitness and enjoy the views.

Oh yeah, and I'm 58 years old and stopped caring what other people thought about 41 years ago when I left high school. Lastly, I'm about 90kg, so nobody confuses me with a pro cyclist.

Mon-Fri I do shortish, say 20-25 milers full pelt. Saturday or Sunday, particularly Sundays, I slow ride - not for recovery, although I think it works that way - visit historic churches or places of interest, get eggs from farms, even ice cream from some farms. It’s a wonderful for once not thinking about PR’s or anything much. Only problem is hedge cutting season on ‘lost lanes’. But it’s just a great experience and I’d heartily recommend it. Almost every village has something fascinating about it, every hill a view. Greetings from South Shropshire/North Herefordshire/Mid Powys border!

Living in rural Warwickshire, I have my fair share of lost lanes all around my village. During these summer months I've been cycling these lanes three times a week in the evening after work. Its a great way to relax and it makes me sleep alot better at night. A stop for a drink from my water bottle is mandatory and take in the beautiful countryside smells and sounds.

A change is a brilliant thing. I tend to go head down all the time on road bike. Sometimes I get frustrated because I went hard but ended up slower than I thought I'd be. So I get on the grav-grav bike and go out for some views and get in touch with the ride and views. And all is good in the cycling world again!

Yep, this is my kind of cycling. It can be down country lanes or around the town cycle paths, there are always plenty of interesting things/places to see. Many of the tiny villages I go though have dead end lanes and I have started cycling down them just to see where they end up.
