It's refreshing to hear someone be honest about the modern "high priced" 992 limited edition models. Yes, if you're looking for a brand new 992 or something to flip, or something to collect, then this is top of the tree in 2024. However the price !! He's called it out correctly - thank you Jay. We know why Porsche justify it (if they sold it for less, someone would flip it for more) and it is a VERY good car. But it's nice to hear someone who hasn't totally drank the Porsche kool aid because they too are at their dealers waiting for an GT3 RS allocation. Great channel.
@@Kacpa2 Yeah ok, I could have used that as an example, but my point wasn't about what I like or you like. It's about how the TH-camrs suck up to Porsche to get the halo cars, which in 2024 the unobtainium car was the GT3 RS.
I have an ST, ordered it new at MSRP and actually drive it a lot. Picked it up in June. I have owned pretty much all the GT cars and this one is by the far the most enjoyable. It is the perfect combo of older school feels/sensations but still has the modern things we all reluctantly hate to admit we like in modern cars: larger screens, internet radios, automatic GPS nose lift, ect ect. So for someone like me it’s an absolute win win. Would I pay a $200k ADM for one? Absolutely not, but not because I think the car isn’t worth it, but more because it would then cause me to worry about the value of the car and would limit me from driving it often to keep the miles down. At MSRP however I am letting it rip!
Ive got a 1982 factory RHD 911sc. Had it 35 years. Im not searching for anything else, my car does it for me, every week. It's beautiful, and just does what it should, day after day, year after year. Look stunning and gets massive cred.
Had a late ‘78 model ‘79 911SC for 12 magnificent years, from ‘94 till ‘06, took us all across Europe and back multiple times (live in NL), selling it was the dumbest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Having a 911 996 back in our life since 5 years ago or so does offer some consolation. It’s a lot of fun too, and of course a lot more capable.
I had two 911SC and both were the tobacco brown color. First one destroyed when a clod rear ended it at Burbank near Lockheed, and second was same exterior color but had a lighter color on the interior. Had more things that needed fixing but I drove it about 20,000 and sold it. Miss them.
Jays really been growing on me .. feel like he’s really established himself over the past 12 months with better and better honest content. This is a great review (I’m a 991.2 GT3 owner) and I’m sick of all the so called petrol heads who are really just buying in for investment and relevance. Subbed
What I love about Jay and his channel: he calls it like he sees it! No B.S. "Don't be dicks Porsche" is maybe the best quote on YT for 2024! So true. Been buying and selling 911's the past 15yrs and it has been frustrating to see the costs now to buy any 911. Thanks for the review ✌
Fair play to the people who lend you their cars - they know what you say might not be exactly glowing and that could be tricky to take if you had a fragile ego - yet evidently people still volunteer! So good for them, they've bought it to use and are clearly going to enjoy doing so.
yes ..and we get honest reviews, not PR happy Brown nosing, by journalists who enjoyed the lavish hospitality, presents and trips around the world that accompany the manufacturers press cars offered...with strings...Jay is free to tell it how it is, others, are not.

North American 992 3RS owner here. I had a go in the ST recently and definitely agree it's a hell of a car but not at the very high market price. But what I will never understand is why folks care how someone else spends or uses their money. I track my RS quite a bit but I barely drive it otherwise. I don't go to car meets and honestly I'd rather keep to myself when I'm out in the car. I have friends with the same car or equivalent cars and some of them sit and some are driven. None of it affects me though. Its not my stuff and not my money.
Don’t think your approach to use is the concern, it’s that Porsche has gone from the “enthusiast” brand to the “elite” brand with its pricing and more luxury focused offerings. Then you need to be “chosen” as worthy of an allocation based on spending history. And the final hurdle is the ADM if your are not lucky to avoid that. And I won’t even get into those that flip them for profit.
@@gbarton800 I can get the frustration, but I think on the whole enthusiast brands cannot exist in modern automotive landscape, or at least without major volumes within the broader brand like TRD/GR with Toyota. Porsche is publicly held. Being an enthusiast focused brand wanting more reasonably priced cars simply doesn't make as much money as high margin goods.
@@gbarton800 you and the million other guys who feel like you don't have a voice that matters to an OEM. Of that million maybe a few thousand have the financial ability to vote with their wallets. There's not enough ROI. Simple as that really. Hell I'd kill for the current M3 estate to be sold here. And then sell it in a rwd/manual config.....me and the 10 other guys who want one.....and I owned a w213 estate and currently have a panamera GTS Sport Turismo i bought new. Would happily bought another panamera wagon brand new. Not enough of us. And simply saying, bring an affordable one won't do either. Making these things lower margin is too much risk for the OEM and/or they need unrealistic volumes. (Not to mention what that does to the brand) There are plenty of folks who wouldn't consider the brand because of such "low market" offerings. Losing that customer base would hurt.....I know. I'm fun at parties....sorry for being a downer but that's the reality of most industries now
Its relative, I wasn't blown away by the S/T - it is a good car but no more so than 991.2 GT3 Touring and the 991 911 R is better in my view. Also, there is a lot lot of overblown marketing, that to me seems very cynical. I've owned a lot of Porsche sports cars and enjoyed many, some more than others. The 992 series was a bridge to far for me, just didn't like the look or interior options and felt the game wasn't moved on from the 991.2 GT3 RS which I still own or my wife' 991.2 GTS. I ended up dropping my allocation for the 992 GT3 RS and went with a 296 GTB which I'm thoroughly enjoying. Porsche are at a watershed in part due to the regulatory environment and in part because they have lost their way.
The best part of the whole video was how enamoured he was with the 997 GT3, because that car is really very affordable, dam near as rare (2256 vs 1963 units) and way more 911-esque than the larger, more technology-laden 992.
I don't think I could be bothered with any of these new Porches even if I could afford one, which I can't. Mat Watson trading in his practically new GT3RS to get one of these sort of sums up the life lots of them will have. You can have a lot of fun in a far far cheaper car.
It's times like this where I really appreciate this channel. While the 911 ST is, as I'm sure, a great car. It seems extremely over hyped by even the "good" reviewers. Also so glad someone has called out on Porsche about it's "special models" which only "special people" can get hold of. Great review.
I sold my 997.1 C4 for a 992.1 C2S. Huge mistake. The turbo engine has no soul. I sold it for a C8 Corvette Z06 and couldn’t be happier. I can see adding another 997 or 991.1 down the line.
@@mattabell3657 I agree with you on the 3.0L turbo having no soul. I wanted a GT3 Touring in manual and saved for a decade and went into a dealership and said, I’d like to order a GT3 Touring, and they laughed me off the lot! So I learned about ADM (I’m in the US) and was told the ADM would be $115K over MSRP, which I couldn’t afford, so I got a 992.1 GTS. I loved it but despite straight piping it, and getting a tune (630hp 585ft-lbs tq) it still was lacking soul. Nothing I did made it closer to the NA 4L GT3 I REALLY wanted. So I called 110 dealerships and found just ONE that was willing to sell me a S/T at a reasonable price.
I consider myself extremely fortunate to own a 996.2 GT3. SO. MUCH. CAR. I derive a great deal of enjoyment from the analog machinery and invariably look back in time for “peak car”.
Hello there! The ST does use a softer suspension setup. In fact Porsche says that they now use these spring rates on the face lift .2 GT3, apparently you don’t lose any performance for the ride benefit. At least according to the Porsche gods.
The ST softer suspension comes from software. While the st uses a slower steering rack, no rear steering and slightly different sway bars the real difference comes in the suspension software. Already in the forums people have figured out how to put the ST software on the regular 992 GT3 and they love it
It is such a shame that ill-informed YTers presume to know who buys these cars. They extrapolate from a small data set and make erroneous conclusions. I know so many true enthusiasts who have bought one of these - not to collect - but to drive. Yes, some do “play the game”, but many go to “proper” owners. I am lucky enough to be one of those, who has spent more than a sensible proportion of my earnings pursuing my dream of driving Porsche’s finest cars - on road and track - for over 25 years. And I am far from alone. BTW, whoever insured their S/T for £475k is getting it massively wrong - I know of a delivery mileage car sold for under £400k. Once again YTer misinformation and for the enthusiast it’s never about the value, it’s about the driving experience. And let me end with the two other points. Roll cage is NOT standard fit (it is an option). And steering is excellent - as much as I think Porsche do the most natural rear wheel steering systems, it’s notable that without it the S/T is just that bit more feelsome, particularly between turn in and apex.
I LOVE the interior, more people need to spec better interiors like this in cars in my opinion, instead of listening to dealers and going for resale black...
991.2 was the best balance between GT and sports car. I love my 991.2 turbo, which has had a tune from ES Motor. Handles well, eats miles for breakfast, and the exhaust and performance added to it by ES has created a beast that adds enough fright, but not too much bite.
“Just build the damn things in the quantity that allows anyone that wants one to have one” - This is absolutely totally right. Porsche has stuck its nose in the air for long enough. Just build the cars and let the customers decide.
He should know they can't - it's a 4.0 n/a and Porsche need to shift a load of EVs and hybrids to avoid big penalties. And you can't blame Porsche for limiting special editions to protect the 911 "brand"
Yeah they still can. For every normal carrera they sell they could earn more selling these at a sensible price to enthusiasts. Currently those enthusiasts (like me) are buying second hand lamborghinI, Porsche, Ferrari and Aston.
@@julianthompson9824in the EU they need to sell a certain amount of EVs to offset emissions from ice cars otherwise attracting large fines per car. I believe a lot of the increased RRP is to absorb this. The 4.0 is highest output, but even the carrera isn't something they could in theory solely sell. Big problems ahead unless these stupid rules are changes as ev sales are not nearly as expected.
James your review was excellent but your rant was epic. Olympic class exposition of Porsche attempts at market manipulation. Well done that man. I was a Porsche salesman in Sydney 97-2000 when we saw the launch of Boxster and 996 and of course the 996 GT3. There was an "honesty of effort". I rang a few great 911 owners when I heard the spec of the GT3. In 48 hrs it was done but none reappeared in the showrooms for premiums. The owners were ecstatic and customers for life. There was no bullshit, the car cost 10% more than a Carrera.

First time to JayEmm.. refreshing to have an unvarnished authentic POV. Many thanks.
I have so much fun in my 2.7 Cayman 981. More than my 997TT. You have to push the engine more, which gives more sound & you get closer to the edge of its abilities. The TT is a great compact GT though. Just what 911 turbo was intended for.
Nice review James. Agreed Porsche should make as many people want. Sensible cash for one of these would go on a 992.2 Touring, same dampers etc. In fact you get Litchfield to tune 992.1 GT3 dampers to S/T spec.
Hi James, apart from its many virtues, I find the muted grey (crayon) colour very appealing. For some reason, cars have become largely metallic in paint, which is difficult to match if damaged by the slightest scrape. This carries its colour like a fighter jet, which it does remind me of.
Jay is quickly approaching Harry Metcalfe levels of motoring journalism. Top tier mate! Edit: Im surprised this is controversial. Ive driven many of these cars and the "no flaw" review style is getting old af. Jay does a good job here and even if I disagree with him, he backs his opinions up very well.
beautiful car, excellent review and gorgeous spec! always a pleasure hearing your insights jay. I hope you had a merry christmas and sending you blessings for new year from a fan down here in austrlalia. I really appreciate all your efforts that go in to cinematography and editing
I paid $145,000 for my 18 GT3. What’s unfortunate for Porsche there are so many other cars in that price range that’s are better and faster . The Huracan Technica. The Ferrari 296 GTB and number of McLarens. I got tired of Porsches games and move over to Lamborghini. And couldn’t be happier
You think Porsche pricing in the UK is bonkers - try Australia. The on road cost of the ST without any options is $750k AUD. At the current exchange rate this is 375k GBP. This means in the UK you could buy an ST at list price plus throw in a GTS. Utterly insane!
I think the Porsche ethos has changed considerably over the past 20-30 years, not necessarily for the better. The 911s of the 70s and 80s were still relatively upmarket, and yet they more-so appealed to the common man. If you were on a moderate salary and wanted a dependable and yet fun weekend car, the 911 was the obvious choice - they were expensive back then, but comparatively offered a better driving experience for the price than the likes of cars like the Ferrari 308 (which had all the looks of a quasi-supercar, but definitely didn't have the performance of one). Nowadays I think it's very much the antithesis - there are many sports cars that offer similar driving pleasure and performance for a quarter of the price of a 911. These newer collector-oriented 911s are destined to sit in air-conditioned garages, not be driven. They only appeal to snobs, not to car enthusiasts.
I love the look of the car, I think it's probably the best looking 911, that's just my opinion. And then consider I absolutely detest white rims and the fact it looks like it's ready to go to the paint shop, but apart from the price it's a really cool piece of kit.
I bought my last (then new) Porsche in 2017. In the year 2021 I was considering to replace it with a GT3. I got disgusted with that silly games of Porsche and decided to keep my old one for a very long time and turned my back as a customer. I even service it know with an independent Porsche specialists instead of going to the official garage. Those attitudes may bring in some extra money on the short term, but in the long run you loose customers…
James, you are the best THANKS for FINALLY being someone that stood up against the Porsche nonsense, thanks to you pointing out the downsides of the car I have realized something, like you say "They can't have this or that in this day and age" yeah, and they charge you more than ever for that. If this was a £75k, £100k or even £120k car it would be excusable but for a quarter of a million? F'CK NO. Besides, this is a 911, that has an asking of more than £100k more than other 911s. (i.e. Carrera Ts), as good as this is, it is still a 911 it surely cannot be £100k better than the Carrera T, which has a lot of the no sound deadening, and lightening of the chassis to begin with.
I’m sorry, I agree with you usually Jay Emm, but I don’t think you understand this particular offshoot of the car market. The reason that this car commands the prices it does has so many factors, not least of which is that there is no alternative for this experience elsewhere in the market outside of the Gordon Murray T50/T33 (500+hp NA, manual, lightweight) for $2M+ and in that context, the S/T is a RELATIVE (keyword) bargain. And to compare it to a base spec GT3 RS price isn’t comparing apples to apples, add the Weissach package, which the S/T inherits many of its parts from, and the GT3 RS is actually $300 USD MORE expensive. The reason that the 911R shot up to $1M was because it was widely considered to be the LAST EVER manual GT Porsche. Had that held true, then the prices would have likely held, again because there is no substitute on the market for that experience. Ferrari and Lamborghini haven’t made a manual in over a decade. EVERY Lamborghini is now a HYBRID 😢 and the F80 is a hybrid turbocharged V6. You have to put the value in the context of the market as a whole, and to add context to the S/T’s value proposition, Porsche GT Division boss Andy Preuninger in a recent interview with Autocar made the bold statement that Euro 7 would spell the end for the pure-ICE NA 4.0L engine, and they will be forced to go Turbocharged or Hybrid after 2026. That means the S/T and the 992.2 GT3 are the LAST (either) naturally aspirated GT cars, OR the LAST manual GT cars (Porsche’s implementation of hybrid precluded using a manual). I believe the S/T will be a $1M+ car in a decade or so, and I put my $$ where my mouth is and exhausted my life’s savings for an S/T because I feel that strongly about it. Jay Emm, you’re an amazing car reviewer, and I value your opinion on the driving experience, but I think you’re off the mark on this particular cars value proposition and future value. My 2cents/pence 😅
One of the big benefits of borrowing cars from viewers instead of press cars is that Jay can speak his mind without damaging his relationship with brands who provide him with cars. "Dont be dicks" was priceless.
Enjoyed the video, and I agree on the 911 variant train. Waiting for your spyder rs review. It’s direct wired to your adrenal gland. Don’t miss it. Far more special car, imo.
The big problem with every 911 is that when you buy them new, they have already been replaced by an upgraded facelift. So you always drive an old 911. That is not the case with Ferrari. Their models never had a facelift, only some technical upgrades. If you drive an F355 today, you are not driving an old Ferrari, but a 355. What I also do not understand is that no TH-camr complains about the plastic parts on the outside, which reach a deplorable 'height' on the latest GT3 RS. This is also the case on this 'special' S/T version. I would find that unacceptable considering the asking price.
How nice to find a brand new JayEmm video today (a rare day off) on the mighty ST having recently seen Mat Watson's speccing video - Happy Christmas back to you 👍
Modern Porsches are GARBAGE. It's shocking how terrible the fit and finish is on $100-250,000 cars. Retired physician here. Multiple colleagues with upper end 911's GT3 and variants having just the most shoddy of workmanship. Rattling, loose panels, software that requires constant rebooting, brakes that squeak, the list goes on and on. The cars go to the dealerships and are told the issues are resolved. NOPE. Same panels are loose, same rattling just a few weeks later. Simply unacceptable.
Absolutely correct analysis but Porsche will not listen to it. They are very aware that they build exactly one sports car in high public demand and that is the 911. The 911 is Porsche's identity. With these countless limited editions and regular engine variants they are faking a big model portfolio they in fact don't have, they are only selling the same car again and again. It's a great car, especially the 992 model, granted, but it's a very obvious cheap trick. And since they saw how popular their GT3 RS versions are, they want to rip off the collector market with artificial limitations that bring also the adventurers and gamblers to the table. It's not serious business and people should avoid it. If you want to own and drive a 911, fine, it's technically a great decision for any petrolhead. But stick to the base model then, it's providing at least 90% of what a 911 can deliver and its price tag is already exaggerated enough compared to its performance.
@@ShaiyanHossain Don't diss the dentist 911 drivers, they are the only ones who really drive their cars on a daily basis and don't only play with them for a few miles on the weekend while using a boring car for most of their real life. 🤣The 718 GT4 is a fine car but it is also only an obvious race track toy. I would never be able to drive a car with a fixed rear wing on normal roads, it's ostentatious and useless in the worst possible manner. Many grown-ups think like that, otherwise special low-key versions like GT3 Touring or S/T would never be made available. If you are really using your car as a daily driver, you need also low-end torque in a sports car, otherwise you would never be able to use its power aside from track visits and an occasional autobahn sprint. You will not drive with 7,000 rpm on a city road to get a decent torque plateau. That's what the turbo trend of recent years delivered beautifully also in baseline performance cars like the base 911 and I actually love that.
I also have an ST, but sadly mine doesn't have a Porsche badge there's just a blue oval thingy on it can't remember exactly. It's a very fun car though 😂
Absolutely love it. 👏👏👏 My opinion, though, counts for nowt. My 14 year old AWD needs a new subframe (possibly just the bushes) and my 9 year old estate has a total Ad-Blue failure. I staring down a £5,000 bill to keep mobile. Whatever you do, people, don’t be ill. You won’t be able to afford it. I knew it was coming but I was confident that I’d make it to retirement. I was wrong. We’ve just had to cancel our Christmas trip to see family and I’m sat in the garage, sulking. So to cheer myself up, I’m watching Jay drive a car that I couldn’t even afford the washer fluid. Sorry boys and girls. 😔 Merry Christmas 🎄
Yes, there may be better options for overall feel and experience in older models. But I think they aimed for a usable street car, because people complain A LOT about how harsh the GT3 is. In that, I think they did a good job. Better than that? Hard to do with all the technology in the new cars. The only way to do better than that would be to make a Speedster. Same thing, but lighter and with an open top. NOW THAT would be something special. A coupe? Cool, but never as cool as an open top.
When you were talking about the steering, were you comparing to the 997 that you had just driven or lets say the 991.2 gt3 that you drove recently?those of us that love a Porsche would be very interested in the differences that you feel and your opinion on those differences? This is coming from a 991.2 touring owner but having also owned 997.1gt3,997.2gt3,997.2gt3rs and regular 991.2gt3 club sport. I think I miss the 997 a little but love the 991 so would be very interested in your thoughts? I could also make the touring and a 964 c2 available for review if interested. Regards .Dan
In a country with people struggling to manage RENT it's nice to know that some people can, most likely finance, a quarter million pounds on a car. I'd choose my old Cayman and no debt of any kind any day.
Any Cayman is eminently capable of jailable speeds, and making your passengers crap themselves and start crying, using just half it's capabilities. From under £10k...
@shatbad2960 what has people struggling to pay rent got to do with this? You could use that shit analogy with anything, oh there's people on the street starving how dare you have a cayman?! Utterly bizarre take. There will always be very wealthy people who can enjoy these things and there will always be a lot more who cannot!
Interesting comment about build quality My 718 is certainly no where near as solid as the 987s I’ve owed same applies to 911s too 997 gt3 is tempting though
I think the ST is a great collector's car for 911 aficionados, but if you want to buy one to drive, get a 911 GT3 Touring which is about 90% ST and half the price.
To my eyes they've overstretched the 911 into a car that's just a bit too bloated and a bit 'over specced' and underfinished. I think with the evolution of the watercooled 911 since the 996 they managed something very impressive with the 997 but since then they've pushed the bigger, more technical, more this, more that, too far. And similtaneously trying to play the speculator game... I agree if you're after a watercooled era 911, when you get to the 997, stop rolling the dice. Stick!
The 997 GT3 was mentioned in this video, but what is usually considered the best 911? I was able to take a 992 Turbo S around Silverstone last week. Very, very capable on a wet track and lots of fun. In the usual Porsche way, the enjoyment came from the speed and its ability. If I was to buy one, I would hope for something that thrills and feels like an event each time I ise it.
Yep, wasn't blown away by the S/T, still a very good car but not otherworldly or Henry Catchpole came to a similar conclusion. Big mistake removing RAS. If its meant to be a road car, why the roll cage?. This is a car driven by marketing. If you want the best Touring like car, get the 991.2 GT3 Touring - very supple car with timeless looks.

Ive got a 1982 factory RHD 911sc. Had it 35 years. Im not searching for anything else, my car does it for me, every week. It's beautiful, and just does what it should, day after day, year after year. Look stunning and gets massive cred.
Total respect

Miss them.

A beautiful car which should be owned & driven by an enthusiast not parked up gathering dust in a collection.
Already in the forums people have figured out how to put the ST software on the regular 992 GT3 and they love it
@@memememine1 Yeah I think there are even companies offering to map the software!
Stunning car and great to hear that it’s actually being used, rather than hidden away.
Look at the foil in the pedalbox. That thing gets used by Jay here and then goes to a storage box to "appreciate"

The bog 992 is still the most sensible choice and does everything.
Totally agree, and if you get a base model, with no options, it's also probably the rarest 911!

Porshe and the NBA have one thing in common; everything has become a three point shot.

You think Porsche pricing in the UK is bonkers - try Australia. The on road cost of the ST without any options is $750k AUD. At the current exchange rate this is 375k GBP. This means in the UK you could buy an ST at list price plus throw in a GTS. Utterly insane!
A great video just in time for the holidays! Thanks James, have a great break across the festive season. 👍🏼
Cutting through the marketing BS.....love it.
100% agree from a layman's perspective. Curious on any cars that come to mind that offer similar driving pleasure ... cheers

Ah yes. Another porsche you can't buy.

Waiting for your spyder rs review. It’s direct wired to your adrenal gland. Don’t miss it. Far more special car, imo.
It looks stunning. Just the way it sits is gorgeous.
Simply unacceptable.
refreshing to hear someone tell it like it is. a rare trait these days.
Only 100-300% markup in the USA market. Thanks Porsche for allowing dealers to do this.
I like the statment about the 997 GT3!
But stick to the base model then, it's providing at least 90% of what a 911 can deliver and its price tag is already exaggerated enough compared to its performance.
base 911s are for dentists. a 718 GT4 is base 911 money and that's the definitive current porsche instead

Ferrari and Lamborghini have stopped making manual cars, so the 992 ST is the best option if you don't want dual clutch.
Another great, honest video 👍🏻
Yes, there may be better options for overall feel and experience in older models. But I think they aimed for a usable street car, because people complain A LOT about how harsh the GT3 is. In that, I think they did a good job. Better than that? Hard to do with all the technology in the new cars. The only way to do better than that would be to make a Speedster. Same thing, but lighter and with an open top. NOW THAT would be something special. A coupe? Cool, but never as cool as an open top.

Stick!
They are very serious. And don't call me Shirley.

Surely you can’t be Shirley ?
Funny. The hatch switch assembly routinely pops up on my car which agreed is not very Porsche
You should try a 991.2 Speedster.
So, did you get hooked on the lightweight flywheel so you re-consider it for your Cayman ??
I am still undecided
