The point you made at 2:17 about not stretching regularly really resonated with me. I'm almost 19 now but I started with taekwondo when I was 4. I used to be super flexible but then recently I had MULTIPLE minor and major muscle pulls in under 3 months, which really humbled me. It was really eye opening. It was also in part due to me doing a lot of squats every day but not properly stretching which really made my hamstrings or smthg like that a lot tighter according to one of my instructors.
Also my lower back has this thing called "Anterior Pelvic Tilt" because of the pandemic and me sitting my ass at the computer all day so now I need to fix my posture as well because it ruins my kicks.
I really suggest everyone trains flexibility a LOT, to the absolute maximum. It's also a good way to build mobility and also strength without increasing muscle mass significantly.
On top of that, I cannot stress the importance of building *stability*. Your muscles need to have that stability in various tense and difficult movements to really bring out that power, and resistance band training imo really helps with that stuff. I don't know much on this topic and I myself am only starting with it soon (if I'm not lazy again), but I have heard from others about this being the case.

  • @Letham316
    @Letham316 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The "stretching every day" bit really hit me. When I started Karate, the strenuous exercises had the same effect as heavy resistance training - needing quite a few days for the muscles to rebuild and recover. I got into the habit of being inactive between classes, but that lack of exercise and stretching was not only limiting my progress, but actively undoing some of it. It's really frustrating when, even after 15 months, I still look like a complete newbie when I try to do push-ups or certain stretches. 😩 Thankfully, I finally started to do some proper work on non-class days. 💪

Another key one is not to neglect your non dominant side. I am very prone to this but it helps you be unpredictable when fighting if your opponent doesn’t know which side you are likely to perform your strongest kick on for example.

Hey I like this one. Thanks for the advise. I glad you share what you learn especially the part where not one martial arts is better than the other. Its the practitioner has to see what suits them or like what can work for them. I myself trying different ones then realize its best to warm up too. Also more techniques need to be added is true along with defence. Bruce Lee- "Adapt whats useful, discard whats not".

I love this video. I was training Japanese Jiu Jitsu since I was 7y.o (I am 17 now) and one of my main goals is do defeat my father in a fight (he was training Kung Fu and he loves Aikido) and when I was a kid I have told him that I am going to defeat him so he can be proud on me as a father (I know it sounds stupid for someone but When I was a kid I was really bullied at school and when I have learned that I can defend myself and get more and more powerful. Strength became my number 1 priority until today. And I have struggled a lot but I have persevered and I am currently 3. Kyu (green belt/ in JJJ it is 4/7 belts (I am only talking abt belts from white belt to 1.dan)) And I can saw for myself that my sparrings are like my family to me. Me and one of my friends really love your videos and you have just reminded me that everyone one who does MS has these kinds of struggles. I am currently finding time to start training with a katana (doing european Long sword for four years -2y bcs of covid) and I have become kinda depressed bcs I was thinking that everything I do will never be good enough but I have persevered and I want to be stronger and stronger. Thank you my friend and I wish you the best...

  • @-ANDRE-59
    @-ANDRE-59 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I was guilty of neglecting defense when I started mma and in a couple of matches (where in one i got my shoulder badly dislocated from a kimura), because in taekwondo the tendency is to attack attack and attack by searching the consequentiality of kicks (and punches for itf taekwondo, at least i did) and I remember that I took a ton of punches to the face because I lacked defense tho my dad and trainers told me to protect myself everytime. Then i literally started to focus just on how to defend effectively, and I arrived to a point where I can do an active defense, similar to Poirier's one. I m not as good as him obviously but I can do a pretty good job as well.

5:00 I love that. Yeah Ive always been fascinated with boxing but I hate it when people starting to compare one martial art to another. All of em are great and unique in their own way. Since I’m Thai and lived in Thailand, most people here would say Muay Thai is the best but Ive always viewed it otherwise. Pretty sure most of good Muay Thai fighter would lose to a good boxer in a fair boxing match, this also applied to the opposite. In the end just do what u love man

as a swimmer, number 3 is soooo accurate, when i was little i used to do my strokes fast and neglect technique (i was still the fastest but besides that,) once i joined the middle school swim team i wasn’t the fastest anymore and i had to work on my technique which made me not go as fast in my 7th and 8th grade years but i was once again the fastest when i got technique and then speed.

I'm actually a green belt in taekwondo, and it's good to hear this stuff because the sparring and how people always say their martial arts is the best. But one of my new instructors who is going to teach us shotokan karate seems pretty amazing, and I'm excited to try a style of karate.

@@Carlo99yeheywouldn't recommend taekwondo as most of them are mcdojos. (Well atleast the one I was in, I figured it out quickly and left as I wanted to progress without feeling like the achievements were being handed to me)

one more thing i’d like to add, not asking someone about a technique or form or whatever. i find that the people of the belt level who are learning it have the most knowledge on it due to it being fresh in their memory. dont be afraid to ask lower belt levels for help. the people in the learning stage (or even a belt higher) and black belts usually have the freshest memory

I've seen so many people coming and leaving from the Dojo in my three years of training. They're looking for glory in their first day and what they get instead is humiliation, and I'm there like 🤦🏽. So many of them don't resists the first phase and simply quit off. As you say, if someone wants results, they must be consistent. It is a struggle of day by day, not a experience once in-a-lifetime

As a karate black belt, I started when I was 6 in a dojo, but stopped at 10 because the dojo was getting old and boring and I was better than everyone else except for the other black belts. I continued training 6 out of 7 days per week in karate skill, strength, speed, durability, and endurance. I'm in my teenage years and I still train this often.

  • @Shadowman820

I have heard that the no sparring thing is especially true in those McDojos , apparently some don't even let you do any sparring . You should have probably mentioned that when people want to start doing martial arts seriously to do their home work about where they are going to train so they don't end up in a McDojo .
