    I'm liking these videos immensely. And no jarring, jangling music. And no ZIPS (very refreshing that!). And everything looks WELL-USED!

    Interesting mixture of Roman, Viking, medieval and 18th-19th century - a few things I would have done differantly but nice kit.

    You have no place for your "smart phone", how are you going to "keep up with the Kardashians" if you don't have a phone or tablet?

    Look, there's something bothering me here. A person who carried that kit with him and relied on it for his day to day well-being, and who understood that it and its contents are not easily replaceable, would treat it with more reverence, more care and not just throw the items down so casually. You maybe need to work on that...

    • @middleearthreenactmentsoc
      @middleearthreenactmentsoc  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We're going to respectfully disagree with you here. Are the items replaceable? Absolutely, though perhaps not immediately. Are they relied upon? Absolutely, but none of them can't be replaced with skills and knowledge.
      Are the items being abused? Absolutely not. Everything shown here has been invested in...it was either made by the hands you see in the frame, or carefully custom ordered from other skilled artisans. No one knows the value of these items better than the Woodsman in the video. And yet, in character, these are not sacred items, but rather tools as a means to an end. They are not relics, they are tools. Durable, work-ready tools that can handle the rigors of the day-to-day without being babied. If they cannot handle being tossed on the ground outside, we wouldn't bother with carrying them.

    Would you be willing to make a list of links for a lot of the places you can buy some of these? (I understand many are probably home made)

      Thanks for the suggestion! We'll look to add that for items we have sourced elsewhere in this and future videos .

  • @gearsfan6669

    this is just genuine curiosity due to the nature of forest trekking regardless of reenactments/larping so, what, if any, modern things do you bring on these for safety reasons? my guess would be phone, spare battery, probably a firearm (unless you know the most dangerous thing in the area are snakes) for wild animal attacks, just general basic woodland safety stuff

    • @middleearthreenactmentsoc
      @middleearthreenactmentsoc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The main concessions we make to modernity are some sort of water filtration/purification and a first aid kit. Someone usually has a phone but more for the camera than anything else, as it often happens that reception cannot be relied on.

    Reminds me of my dad's pack frame when he went to Philmont. Just a frame with shoulder straps, but a large bundle could be strapped to the frame. I'm loving these videos, doing the most you can with the least amount of stuff. Keep up the good work. Aure Entuluva!

      These were made by this member, but they are fairly straightforward to create. A basic pattern can be found online if you search for "aegyptenmore utersen shoe", or you can search "iron age bog shoes" to see other similar examples!

    Another great idea. I've invested a lot in "haversacks" made with the day hiking or "bushcrafter" community. They're pricey so you (or at least I) tend to be careful with them. The oilskin ones wear well but they're small. I've often thought about getting just a simple bag and hooking up a sling to it . . . and waddayaknow . . . looks like Middle Earthers thunk of it first. 😁The Russian Army historically carried a similar thing called a veschmeshok but those things carry more than 30 Liters so it's a little big. This looks just the right size for a day hike.

    • @middleearthreenactmentsoc
      @middleearthreenactmentsoc  ปีที่แล้ว

      We're very familiar with the trusty meshok - this bag is actually copied off one, just in brown linen and with the big U-strap permanently attached to the frame!

    What is Cram?

    • @joshuafrancisco3830
      @joshuafrancisco3830 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm guessing it's similar to hard tack biscuits used by sailors

    • @middleearthreenactmentsoc
      @middleearthreenactmentsoc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshuafrancisco3830 Correct. It's flour that's been mixed with water to make a dough, and then dehydrated through baking at low temperature to make a tough cracker.

    • @middleearthreenactmentsoc
      @middleearthreenactmentsoc  ปีที่แล้ว

      Middle-earth hardtack, essentially:
      "If you want to know what cram is, I can only say that I don't know the recipe; but it is biscuitish, keeps good indefinitely, is supposed to be sustaining, and is certainly not entertaining, being in fact very uninteresting except as a chewing exercise." - The Hobbit, Chapter 13.
