Nice kit. Based on your views, I think you are doing this full-time so it would be great to see you take a kit like this, out in the the woods (somewhere you may not be familiar with) and do a video showing you using this type of kit to survive. Even if there are failures, it would be good to see and learn from them.
Man this one is by far one of the best all around wilderness survival kits that covers all the bases. I would add a wooden rat trap for small game to complete it .

My additions to your great video - add small ziploc baggies with small amount of chia and flax seeds and rice. Also don't strike the fero rod with the blade side of the knife. The edge of the blade back is sufficient and won't dull the blade. Great vid!

Put the inculded lanyard on it and hold the light in your left hand (if you are right handed). Now wrap the lanyard around the back of your first three fingers and put the keyring around the lens bezel of the light. There! Quasi hands free, and when you walk it shines in your pathway with very little efort.

The Pathfinder Pocket Hunter is a really good system, and it has an arm brace that, in my experience, makes it far easier to shoot, You can also get bands for it with up to 50lb pull weights, and the version from the Pathfinder Store has an attachment for bow fishing as well. The Pathfinder Store also has three piece carbon arrows with very little run out, and they have a specific take-down fishing arrow and arrow head. The Pocket Hunter was also designed specifically to fin into the cargo pocket of many types of cargo pants.

I do have one with Dave's arrows, extra bands, pouch... the whole deal... as I do Chief AJs and a few others. So... Do you have Dave's Pocket Hunter? Sounds like you do. If so... I would LOVE to see how you shoot it accurately. I have had mine for a while and still can't get the thing on target even with his arrows... and following his instruction. Normally I can get about any accurate weapon on target within a few shots... but not the pocket hunter. I would appreciate any help or advice you can give. UltimateSurvivalTips I didn't really consider the bulk, but you're right. It is quite a bit bulkier than the one in your kit. The arm brace takes up a lot of extra room, but I've never been able to shoot a slingshot very well without one, so I put up with it. It took me quite a while to learn to shoot the Pocket Hunter with any kind of accuracy, and I'm still not as accurate as I need to be, but the only advice I can really give is to keep at it. I know that's not all that helpful to you, sorry. I don't have a background in traditional archery or in regular slingshot shooting. In this case that may have actually been an advantage though since I didn't have to learn something that works differently than what I already knew, but since I've never fired any other sling-bow systems I can't really say how it's different. If it really is that different from the sling-bows you're used to, and you're happy with those, it might not be a bad idea to find someone who needs one & give it away so that you don't unlearn those while learning the Pocket Hunter. Habits learned on one system transfer all too readily to other systems, especially the bad ones! As for me I just followed Dave's directions and kept at it until the arrows started going in the right direction. The only one of Dave's arrows that I have so far is the fishing arrow, and I haven't had the opportunity to use it yet. Right now I'm using the same 1-piece carbon arrows that I use with my compound bow. I just had the vanes on several of them replaced with feathers. Vanes don't work with the Pocket Hunter System, at all. I know that Dave warns against using them, but I had to try it just to see for myself. He's right; vanes don't work! The only thing I really did differently than what Dave recommends is that I started using my old hand-held rope release that I use with my compound bows in order to take a lot of the stress off of my fingers when shooting the Pocket Hunter. Unfortunately I got that release back in '98, and I haven't seen one like it for sale in probably ten years or more. That sucks too, because I really like that type of release! Still, I'd think that any release you like should work just fine. I wish I could be more help! BTW, sorry that it took so long to get back to you. Somehow I just missed your reply.

Between this video and the canteen/Sawyer system video you have saved me a good deal of space and weight in my hiking pack,which by the way is a Condor 3 day assault pack I bought after your review of it, my fall hiking set up will be the most organized ever and I have been doing this for 40 years.
A good alternative to the gas stove, some sporting goods stores sell survival stoves that burn wood. They're basically five sheets of stainless steel (or titanium) that you fit together into a box, then add two strips more on the top to make a stove top for cooking. It might be too wide to fit in your kit, but one advantage, it uses wood so you don't have to find another gas canister when it runs out. The steel ones run about $42, while the titanium ones run about $80.
i found this video very helpful thanks David ., really dig the sling shot option i carry one in my bag as well.. i do use the vertical Altoids tin to carry my ammo it holds 60 rounds (3/8") comfortably.. so now building this kit gave me more space in my bag!
To: Ultimate Survival Tips - Awesome video. I own a Sling shot and practice with it regularly. If preppers practice with it they should be able to hunt small game easily. If they have never used one they will not be able to hit small game with it.

My dad has never taken me our hunting, camping, or fishing either. Thankfully I have, through other means, gone on many different survival treks and camps.
Thanks for another great video! I have four of those condor packs that I use for water and gear storage. I have two them mounted on the sides of one pack as you have and on the waist pads of another pack for balance. They will hold a 32oz. Nalgene bottle nestled in a stainless cup and a bunch more kit in the front pouch and still have room for more stuff if you attach it to the mollie straps around the outside with "S" biners and/or paracord.
I really like your use of the Stanley. If you carry a disposable lighter, go with a Bic. They are by far the most durable and reliable. Just trying to help
I see you added tea bags... great if you're a "Brit" and it's 4:00 o'clock. There are also "coffee" bags in foil packages from Folgers and Kroger stores for that sense of well being one needs while trying to survive. A few hard candies, peppermints are good to sweeten hot drinks and help w/ upset stomachs. All in all though a pretty good selection of gear. Thanks.
Great ideas....I love the Coleman Camp Cook Set, I have one, it is awesome. I prefer the ToGoWare kit, which has a holder for the bamboo knife, spoon, fork and chopsticks which can be hung from your pack with a carabiner or looped through the molle. Great tip for carrying the slingshot ammo in the chapstick containers - genius
Good video, David. A tip for the coffee beans, you can crush four or five beans and boil them for a weak cup of coffee. Would like to see a video on a frog/fishing gig.

I love it. But prefer to make each package custom to the situation I might come across. I don't buy prepacked survival kits made by a company or someone else ready for the shelves to sell, but will buy individual pieces of kit and make my own kit. Good ideas.
instead of maglite, personally i would do with a fenix e01. is smaller, more affordable. has a longer battery life AND in my experience is less prone to breakage - LOVE THE VID THOUGH... KEEP UP THE AMAZING VIDs Plz

foldable stove. mine will burn wood and charcoal and has an integrated alcohol burner. it works great and even if my alcohol bottle runs out, i can still use twigs and wood

Great vid. I'm new to hiking/backpacking and use the Stanley cook kit with a no name butane/propane stove that has a ignition lighter built in that cost $12 Canadian. I got some great tips from this vid. First, there are gas canisters small enough to fit in the Stanley cooker. 2nd, the GSI mug fits under the Stanley cooker. I find the nesting mug is great and because it is doubled walled it is perfect for hot drinks. However I don't like mixing/eating food from the stanley, just boiling, so the gsi mug is great. As well, I never take along emergency hunting gear as I pack in plenty of food but a few snares and what not will be there for now on because they are super light weight and you never know. Thanks and your production quality is awesome

Great video. I did use your Kleen Kanteen idea with 40 ouncers which fit in the GSI cup which then sqeezes into the 10 x 4 bottle pouch. But then I wanted something bigger for the 64 oz bottle I already owned. The answer, Maxpedition 12 x 5 bottle holder takes that 64 ouncer like it was made for it. I couldn't find a bigger cup but the GSI fits nicely upside down on top of the bottle. Mike in South Jersey
The snare kit is a waste of time, replace the kit with 2 rat traps. Snares work 10% of the time rat traps work 80 to 90 % of the time. So 2 traps work as well as16 to 18 snares.
Problem with rat traps is they only work on one rodent. After that no rodent will approach it. I'd say your better off with specialized dead fall kits. Then you can use the rocks around for trapping, and set up loads of traps. The snares would actually be useful if you're in an area inhabited with lots of rabbits.
Hello David, A small wood stove would also fit in the pouch and will give you a longer ability to cook. I would also replace the gas burner with the "Notkocher M71", I think this could give you more space for some other food. I ordered the other parts how you describe it, thank you for this !
Ok, I can see augmenting this kit with a canteen and a belt knife, but two contractor plastic bags would make a great addition to this kit for shelter. The belt knife could actually be affixed to the pack.
Having two canisters in a portable kit like this seems redundant. In my opinion only one is needed. With the saved space I would put a better knife in there as processing medium game would be challenging with a folding knife, and ditch the utensils and use a spork. Thats just what I would do, I also dont know if that much ammunition is well paired with only one gas canister... 150+ rounds of ammo is a lot of dead squirrels for only one gas canister! A none fuel stove would be more suited to long term survival that the hunting aspect is set up for. Anyways thats just my opinion, thanks for sharing your video. PS: Chlorine tablets would be a must.

Yes... there is much redundancy... especially if you add this to my Survival Water kit. But if you only have one kit as a stand alone kit... you would still be well off... Canadian Prepper this kit doesn't have a water storage option so the extra cup gives you a way to boil water let it cool to a drinkable temp and boil more its also a way to cook and have something to drink out of!!!!
You can also cook over a fire and I think that is why David included a ferro-rod in the kit. I personally would use the gas system as a back up or emergency kit and cook with fire first. I'm not knocking anyone here. We all have our ways that work for us and that's fine, because it's all about what works for each person in a given situation. I do like Mr. Mixson's idea though!
I field dressed deer and bear with a folding knife. On several occasions, last year was the most recent one, I've butchered deer with a folding knife. Larger knives do make for a better job, but folding knives work fine.
This is a pretty nice kit, but a couple of things would change, and this is just my personal preference, are the utensils and knife. I would put in a Snow Peak titanium spork and a Swiss army knife. I feel the spork might save space, especially if you get the short version, and a sak would also have a can opener and bottle opener. And some even have fish scalers/hook removers.
I never thought of weaving the paracord through the molle webbing. A way you could improve that is using Bladehq's Prepcord that has the normal 7 inner strands but also has a strand of 10 pound test fishing line through the whole cord. So if you weave 30 feet in your molle you have 30 feet of paracord and 30 feet of fishing line.

I still like Chief AJ's sling bow, the best that I have seen out there, it is kind of expensive, but have seen him take down a deer with it and it comes with a fanny pack for the sling bow and take down arrows and fishing rod to attach to it. This is another great video. Thanks

Ya should have a spare double banded TBG set also, Ive taken turkey with double bands and I am sure you could take loads more. I have shot chipmunk with single and had them live actually haha. Not normally however I hunt squirrel all the time with slingshots and most times a single band works. Also cutting the tapered makes them last longer and gives you an easier pull!
Pretty good job. Inexpensive components. And while it's very clever, I don't like for a kit to be packed so tightly. A little empty space is a good thing, and makes a bag much more useable. I live in an arid, area. The first thing to pack is a filled water container. 2nd is a charger for phone.
You just mentioned 3 items I always take hiking, my Maxpedition molle water pouch, GSI cup and Stanley cook kit. Good kit. I prefer using solid hex stoves, because when you do run out of Hexamine to burn, you can still use the metal burner housing with twigs and other material, it's just enough to boil your water and cook food in a emergency. When the gas runs out, the whole thing is useless. They hare even small enough just to keep as backup in the molle pack.
If your going deep in the back country get a mil surplus 26.5 mm flare gun and a cartridge insert .22lr or 45 colt/.410 with some ammo and a few flares ..now you have a simple basic weapon for self defense or hunting..and a distress signal too ..
everything seems perfect in this survival kit but it missing one of the most important things like first aid. infection can kill you as easily as a knife in the heart so maybe you can add a few band aids and Neosporin and antiseptics to clean the wound. I may be wrong through I am only 12 years old. still good video.
Instead of just focusing what you can shove into a set pouch, you might want to set a weight limit as well as I'm sure for not taking up much space will be heavy as hell for its size especially carrying shot.

i got the stanly. put it in a ss cup and ordered a condor bag. its going to carry rations and utensills with soap and scrub pad. rations are better. il put my hunting stuf in my pack.
Love the inclusion of an old school pocket knife, but a comparably sized Swiss Army Knife or multi tool, would have been a more practical, and versatile choice.
Nice kit. Check out the simple shot hammer sling shot sling bow. I have 1 and it's the best in my opinion. Mine is also able to fish. Ps those arrows did not look like they were flying true. Up the band and tune.

What were the different brands of slingshots that you compared to end up with the "top shot?" I ask because Dave Cantaberry has a great one on his Wilderness Outfitters site. Sling shots are great but the rubber goes bad in less than a year.
So I got a $90.00 cross bow. Its bigger but it will last.
Pocket shot is the way to go my man

I prefer the ToGoWare kit, which has a holder for the bamboo knife, spoon, fork and chopsticks which can be hung from your pack with a carabiner or looped through the molle. Great tip for carrying the slingshot ammo in the chapstick containers - genius
Good video, David. A tip for the coffee beans, you can crush four or five beans and boil them for a weak cup of coffee. Would like to see a video on a frog/fishing gig.

I love it. But prefer to make each package custom to the situation I might come across. I don't buy prepacked survival kits made by a company or someone else ready for the shelves to sell, but will buy individual pieces of kit and make my own kit. Good ideas.

instead of maglite, personally i would do with a fenix e01. is smaller, more affordable. has a longer battery life AND in my experience is less prone to breakage

foldable stove. mine will burn wood and charcoal and has an integrated alcohol burner. it works great and even if my alcohol bottle runs out, i can still use twigs and wood

Great vid. I'm new to hiking/backpacking and use the Stanley cook kit with a no name butane/propane stove that has a ignition lighter built in that cost $12 Canadian. I got some great tips from this vid. First, there are gas canisters small enough to fit in the Stanley cooker. 2nd, the GSI mug fits under the Stanley cooker. I find the nesting mug is great and because it is doubled walled it is perfect for hot drinks. However I don't like mixing/eating food from the stanley, just boiling, so the gsi mug is great. As well, I never take along emergency hunting gear as I pack in plenty of food but a few snares and what not will be there for now on because they are super light weight and you never know. Thanks and your production quality is awesome

Great video. I did use your Kleen Kanteen idea with 40 ouncers which fit in the GSI cup which then sqeezes into the 10 x 4 bottle pouch. But then I wanted something bigger for the 64 oz bottle I already owned. The answer, Maxpedition 12 x 5 bottle holder takes that 64 ouncer like it was made for it. I couldn't find a bigger cup but the GSI fits nicely upside down on top of the bottle. Mike in South Jersey

The snare kit is a waste of time, replace the kit with 2 rat traps. Snares work 10% of the time rat traps work 80 to 90 % of the time. So 2 traps work as well as16 to 18 snares.
Problem with rat traps is they only work on one rodent. After that no rodent will approach it. I'd say your better off with specialized dead fall kits. Then you can use the rocks around for trapping, and set up loads of traps. The snares would actually be useful if you're in an area inhabited with lots of rabbits.
Dependant on location. Rat traps are worthless here.

Hello David, A small wood stove would also fit in the pouch and will give you a longer ability to cook. I would also replace the gas burner with the "Notkocher M71", I think this could give you more space for some other food. I ordered the other parts how you describe it, thank you for this !
Ok, I can see augmenting this kit with a canteen and a belt knife, but two contractor plastic bags would make a great addition to this kit for shelter. The belt knife could actually be affixed to the pack.

Having two canisters in a portable kit like this seems redundant. In my opinion only one is needed. With the saved space I would put a better knife in there as processing medium game would be challenging with a folding knife, and ditch the utensils and use a spork. Thats just what I would do, I also dont know if that much ammunition is well paired with only one gas canister... 150+ rounds of ammo is a lot of dead squirrels for only one gas canister! A none fuel stove would be more suited to long term survival that the hunting aspect is set up for. Anyways thats just my opinion, thanks for sharing your video. PS: Chlorine tablets would be a must.

Canadian Prepper this kit doesn't have a water storage option so the extra cup gives you a way to boil water let it cool to a drinkable temp and boil more its also a way to cook and have something to drink out of!!!!
You can also cook over a fire and I think that is why David included a ferro-rod in the kit. I personally would use the gas system as a back up or emergency kit and cook with fire first. I'm not knocking anyone here. We all have our ways that work for us and that's fine, because it's all about what works for each person in a given situation. I do like Mr. Mixson's idea though!
I field dressed deer and bear with a folding knife. On several occasions, last year was the most recent one, I've butchered deer with a folding knife. Larger knives do make for a better job, but folding knives work fine.
This is a pretty nice kit, but a couple of things would change, and this is just my personal preference, are the utensils and knife. I would put in a Snow Peak titanium spork and a Swiss army knife. I feel the spork might save space, especially if you get the short version, and a sak would also have a can opener and bottle opener. And some even have fish scalers/hook removers.
I never thought of weaving the paracord through the molle webbing. A way you could improve that is using Bladehq's Prepcord that has the normal 7 inner strands but also has a strand of 10 pound test fishing line through the whole cord. So if you weave 30 feet in your molle you have 30 feet of paracord and 30 feet of fishing line.

Great video, but instead of using a blade to strike the ferro rod you could 90 degree the spin on one of the blades to save an edge
You can add on one or all Fremont knives to the inner belt loops as well!!
I still like Chief AJ's sling bow, the best that I have seen out there, it is kind of expensive, but have seen him take down a deer with it and it comes with a fanny pack for the sling bow and take down arrows and fishing rod to attach to it. This is another great video. Thanks

Insted of a scrubbing pad use one kitchen paper towel, lay it onto the gsi cup and push it in with the pot/bottle. It will hold together.

Ya should have a spare double banded TBG set also, Ive taken turkey with double bands and I am sure you could take loads more. I have shot chipmunk with single and had them live actually haha. Not normally however I hunt squirrel all the time with slingshots and most times a single band works. Also cutting the tapered makes them last longer and gives you an easier pull!
Pretty good job. Inexpensive components. And while it's very clever, I don't like for a kit to be packed so tightly. A little empty space is a good thing, and makes a bag much more useable. I live in an arid, area. The first thing to pack is a filled water container. 2nd is a charger for phone.
That kit is cool as hell. I gotta get one put together myself.

I prefer using solid hex stoves, because when you do run out of Hexamine to burn, you can still use the metal burner housing with twigs and other material, it's just enough to boil your water and cook food in a emergency. When the gas runs out, the whole thing is useless. They hare even small enough just to keep as backup in the molle pack.

very nice compact kit. seems to be complete.
Two 18" squares of heavy duty aluminum foil, folded up, will fit between the Stanley cup and the GSI cup for a few more cooking options.
If your going deep in the back country get a mil surplus 26.5 mm flare gun and a cartridge insert .22lr or 45 colt/.410 with some ammo and a few flares ..now you have a simple basic weapon for self defense or hunting..and a distress signal too ..
everything seems perfect in this survival kit but it missing one of the most important things like first aid. infection can kill you as easily as a knife in the heart so maybe you can add a few band aids and Neosporin and antiseptics to clean the wound. I may be wrong through I am only 12 years old. still good video.
Instead of just focusing what you can shove into a set pouch, you might want to set a weight limit as well as I'm sure for not taking up much space will be heavy as hell for its size especially carrying shot.

i got the stanly. put it in a ss cup and ordered a condor bag. its going to carry rations and utensills with soap and scrub pad. rations are better. il put my hunting stuf in my pack.

Love the inclusion of an old school pocket knife, but a comparably sized Swiss Army Knife or multi tool, would have been a more practical, and versatile choice.

Nice kit. Check out the simple shot hammer sling shot sling bow. I have 1 and it's the best in my opinion. Mine is also able to fish. Ps those arrows did not look like they were flying true. Up the band and tune.
