  • Waveform 2x2 and 4x4 MIMO external antennas tested on the T-Mobile 5G Home Internet Arcadyan G4AR gateway. Internet speed tests with ping compared. What's the best order to hook up an antenna to the gateway? How much faster is it? See this and more in the video. T-Mobile just release a new gateway with a KEY feature, external antenna ports for easy install. This is the Arcadyan TMOG4AR gateway with a MediaTek T750 modem chipset. It supports numerous 5G and 4G bands including Carrier Aggregation for the potential for huge speeds. Lets compare it to the Sagemcom 5688W, KVD21 and Nokia 5G21 gateway that T-mobile offers. Note customers typically don't have a say in which gateway they recieve, all 4 are currently being sent to customers. Consider subscribing to the channel or looking below for more content!

    I’ve learned SO MUCH from your videos. Thank you. I used to think that all that mattered was the number of bars. I spent some time testing my box in different locations, just looking at 5G SINR mostly, and tripled my upload speed (same 4 bars).

    • @BarryDorfman
      @BarryDorfman 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@not4weak It depends. If you’re in a single-story home you’re unlikely to be able to “see” over your neighbors roof. Or perhaps you just can’t put your T-Mobile box in a room where it has good signal, but an antenna in the attic lets you put it in whatever room it needs to be in. (And this isn’t really a reply to anything I said, so you put it here by mistake.)

    • @kevinrtres
      @kevinrtres 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@not4weak Yup - it depends and it's exactly as Nate described. I have a single-story house that is in the worst possible position for any signal - those that I get are of very low power and quality. Having spent some time hunting signal strength around the neighbourhood I was able to locate the tower that send the signals in my area. Then, having already decided on a poynting xpol-6 I spent some time looking around the roof to get the best signal. Turns out that I have to lift the antenna 2.5m above gutter height and turn the antenna to face the tower. Conclusion: with a mr600 I went from around 15Mbps to 77Mbps download and from 4.7 to 45Mbps upload on band 1. On band 41 I get up to 108Mbps down and 7.5Mbps up. So even though I'm using a directional antenna I know if the one band fails or gets maintenance then I can at least switch to the other.
      Enjoy your relatively easy access!

    I performed a simple test of opening the window next to where my trashcan sits and I got an extra bar and my downloads went from 177Mbps to 228Mbps and my upload went from 11Mbps to 18Mbps. It's too hot here to leave the window open. I have a very nice high place on my house to mount an antenna. As soon as production ramps up and they offer them to current users, I will be getting one. I can imagine how much cleaner of a signal I will be receiving, plus the speed boost will be nice too.

    Thanks for your very helpful videos. One thing I would like to see is what improvements there would be if you were barely getting a signal with out the antenna, maybe 10 miles from the nearest tower, and then with the antenna. In my situation, I get maybe 50 mg down at its best, and completely unusable in the evening. Thanks again for helping us all out.

    • @kevinrtres
      @kevinrtres 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lot depends on how heavily your tower or cell is being used at any time. It might also be the band you're using - so if your router allows it lock into a fixed band and see how it goes. Which antenna do you have and how did you install it? Just for interest sake.

    Love your content and just starting this journey. A couple of questions: T-Mobile provided me the arcadyan kvd21 gateway and I purchased the 4x4 MIMO External Panel antenna based on their input. Is the TMO-G4AR better than the kvd21 with an external antenna? And have you tested the 4x4 MIMO panel with the kvd21 to see which antenna connection combo works best?

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The kvd21 and g4ar have the same modem so i'd call them equal with no external antenna. G4ar is obviously easier to install them. I have tested external antenna with all the gateways, checkout my channel and the Waveform playlist for videos.

    My 4x4 arrives tomorrow along with my ASUS ASUS RT-AX82U AX5400 that you recommended. My best antenna mounting option is next to my DirecTV dish though in order for my 30' of coax to reach the TV area for a place to sit. Do you think the dish will screw up my TMobile signal? Also, how much do you suspect that VPN like Nord might slow the speed down?

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The dish should be ok so long as the antenna is not directly in front of it. VPN slow down varies greatly by which VPN you pay for and how close their server is to you.

    I have the Waveform 4x4 panel installed and i'm having intermittent disconnects with my T-Mobile Arcadyan KVD21. Before I connected the external antenna my measurements were marginal, but now they are excellent: RSRQ=2, RSRP= -75, SINR = 22, Band= n41. Connections: 1-D, 2-M2, 3-M1, 4-M. Now, I have great speed, but the intermittent drops of service. What could be the issue?

    saw this new gateway, but tmobile wont let me switch to it. So hoping my store gets some in stock so I can swap out to it. Don't feel like tearing my gateway apart to put an external antenna on it. Also would be great if my local tower would just stop acting up. speeds went down from 80Mbps to like 6Mbps this week. with an upload of a steady 20Mbps. not sure whats going on but lots of people returning them lately too. So frustrating, I don't want to have to go buy a $500 5G modem just to get the service I pay for.

    T-Mobile sales says they have no control of when the G4AR will arrive either in retail or direct sales. You will just have to wait until "someone" can verify its in stock. I did look at this gateway, but it is software and firmware limited by T-Mobile. The IMEI's are whitelisted at TMo and while some have gotten around that by spoofing the IMEI on their own equipment, you are still subject to the throttle and bandwidth controls TMo uses on those IMEI's. I have been working with a Mikrotik Chateau 18ax with the CAT18 modem and TMo, but I cannot get the Mikrotik software setup to handshake with TMo correctly and it does not work at the moment. It only supports 2x2 MIMO. Mikrotik is really designed for the aggregator business, and requires lots of obtuse CLI entries. Not recommended for the home/DIY crowd. In the mean time I have the Cudy P5 CAT22 router and the default firmware worked in 5G-SA mode out of the box. After the firmware upgrade and the recommended settings from Cudy for TMo, it works great. I am *not* using the TMo Home Gateway account for the Cudy. It is using a pre-paid unlimited data SIM from TMo. Using the wafers I get B25 and B41. Waiting on the external antenna install with the 4x4 MIMO.

    After extensive testing wing the black and white tmobile routers... the G4AR built-in antenna is different and mostly inferior to the black model sold by most tmobile stores. At my location with the black model (cant remember model number) my 5g signal-to-noise was always 30-40 and my 4g signal-to-noise was like -1. wierd. but the white model never breaks 10 for either 4g or 5g. Its more consistent but its consistently mediocre. Its a good thing the G4AR has external antenna mounds because you are more likely to need them.

    I have the Newest White T-Mobile 5G Gateway like in your Video and I'm gonna try the Waveform Antenna up in my Attic we already get 300 plus for Download and around 20 Upload along with around 20 to 30 Ping without any Antenna but sometimes the Download the Upload and Ping can be inconsistent so hopefully this will help. I tried a Chester Cheetah V2 5G Gateway but that didn't really improve the Speeds much and it was giving me a Weak 5G Signal while the Stock T-Mobile 5G Gateway gives me a Very Good 5G Signal and also gives me faster Speeds. I'll be returning the Chester Cheetah V2 5G Gateway and I'm gonna try the Waveform Antenna instead. Our Yard has a lot of Trees and some of them are big and tall with thick Branches and Leaves and we only have two Cell Towers somewhat close to us and our House is over a Hundred Years old it's got thick Walls and Aluminum Siding so that stuff could possibly be effecting the Signal and Speeds. I had to put a TV Antenna Outside because we can't get decent Reception inside the House do to the Aluminum Siding and the thick Walls so I'm thinking it's probably the same with this. First I'll try the Waveform Antenna up in the Attic but if that's not good enough I'll move it to Outside. I'd much rather have it up in the Attic rather than Outside because it would last longer from not being exposed to the Weather but if I would have to put it Outside I would but I'll test it in the Attic first. Thanks a lot for another great Video Nate!

    If the telcoms were serious (confident?)about being cellular ISPs, they would use equipped installers who can pinpoint the tower locations, measure the signal strength, install an external antenna when needed, and optimize the gateway. Currently, it’s a roll of the dice whether a subscriber experiences reliable advertised speeds. Personally, I have enough hobbies that I don’t want to hack and babysit my Internet to save $30 a month. Cable ISPs are aware of cellular’s limitations and schizophrenic performance, and therefore don’t consider it competition.

    I don’t get it maybe I’m just lucky. I have the silver trashcan gateway and I can get speeds up to 600 down (667 highest ever) and between 15-25 up (highest 39) with the internal antenna and 2 bars signal strength. “Normal” everyday all day downloads in the 400s and uploads over 10. In in a SoCal city an hour east of Los Angeles. I don’t know where my cell tower is so I can’t say whether I’m close to it or not, but I’m guessing I must be. I can only guess and drool about what my speeds would be if I had an external antenna on the trashcan or tge new gateway with external antenna connections. Maybe I could get 1 gig!!!

      I'm lucky as well, as when I signed up in back in Feb I got a Sagemcom gateway, where I have mine pointing out a clear window that's adjacent to my open air carport along with an AC/heating register next too it so temps stay regulated, and depending on time of day/weather/traffic load, I'm pulling down 400 Mbps - around 600 Mbps with my ups between 50 Mbps to 150 Mbps with idle pings usually under 24ms and very rarely higher than 40ms with it hooked into my TP-Link Deco mesh router setup so I'm not using the Gateway for WiFi, so yeah like you if I had the new Gateway I could also see close to if not 1Gbps, but i'm not going to cancel my service to sign up again, and be put into the lottery of getting one as I'm hearing they are still pushing the Nokia Trashcans on people, so I'll wait till one pops up on eBay at a fair price, and just swap over my SIM card, or T-Mobile starts allowing existing customers to upgrade.

      Where I live (in the southern AZ boonies) the Arcadyan has always performed much better than the Nokia and now that I have the Sagemcom (spelling 🙄) it is doing better than the Arcadyan…. I suppose it just depends on your location and what T-Mobile is pumping out …. Until very recently I HAD to use a 4x4 external in order to get decent speeds but after nearly 1-1/2 YEARS of “working/upgrading” the old Sprint tower just 1 mile away… my speeds are around 600 down and 60 up without an outdoor antenna (but I’m about to install pigtails in the new gateway and see what it do with my waveform 4x4 👉just for fun …. Not needed however)

      You are lucky. Without the 4x4 antenna, I get 5-10mbps down and 0.2-1.5mbps up. It's terrible. And a ping so bad that it'll time out.
      With the 4x4 I get 30-100mbps down and 10-20mbps up. Nate's been a lifesaver for me as even the satellite internet companies won't offer service here.

      It might not be much higher, maybe try taking it outside and put it on the side with the cell tower using the app and see if it increases?
      With my T-Mobile I had to give them a different address (in a different state) to be able to buy it but it still connects to 5G and gets about 17-25 down and up to 5 up inside with aluminum siding and wood roof

    T mobile have the best speed but the loaded ping is terrible for me. Verizon 4g has performed better

      @@NaterTaterIs the loaded pings on your cheetah in 5G SA any different?

      I wish I could get Verizon's home 5G service. Towers have C band, but it's never been available. Frustrating as they're my phone provider and I've used my phone for gaming before simply to alleviate issues with T-Mobile.
