      When I was 15, my best friend and I went for guitar lessons. He wanted to play Stones, BOC, Nugent and Hendrix songs and myself BTO, GFR, BOC, Nugent and Sabbath. The instructor could play anything and did all the riffs from our list. Sent us home to learn Lyin Eyes by the Eagles with sheet music. My friend learned Jingles bells and I tried piano unsuccessfully.

    • @Lughnerson
      @Lughnerson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yup, me too. 1978 in Poughkeepsie. Drummer had a solo with strobe lights, leaned back and come up with the Godzilla head and lasers everywhere. They had one song with all 5 guys playing guitar front of stage. "Don't Fear the Reaper" and "Astronomy." The other songs were great too. For a 16-year-old's 2nd rock concert ever, and some MaryJane, that one blew me away. "Some Enchanted Evening" album caught them at their best. Ah the 70's!

    • @tomgorman748
      @tomgorman748 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      They always sounded better live. Unlike bands who overdubbed so many things in the studio in excess to the point where they couldn’t come close to duplicating the sound in concert, BÖC seemed to record their songs with the intention of making sure they could play them live.

      @@benm8903 not sure what your comment means. Yes, bands still perform live. My comment referred to the fact that many bands put so many layers of music into the studio recordings it’s almost impossible to duplicate that sound in concert. While Blue Öyster Cult often sounds better live than on the original studio recording.

    • @benm8903
      @benm8903 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tomgorman748 Ah fair enough, and that's interesting to know. My comment was a bit facetious.
      I think there's a bit of a thing with lots of TH-cam comments for older music videos for people to state that music isn't what it used to be, and that bands don't do it like they used to, and I was just making a cheap comment, as I think we are slightly swimming in nostalgia at the moment, and there are still plenty of bands who are brilliant live, and plenty of great music being made. Your comment wasn't along these lines at all though and my reply was more in reply to the first comment in this thread.

    I saw these guys live for the first time at a show in Upstate New York, Plattsburgh State University to be precise. They were freakin' steamin' especially when all the guys stood almost arm in arm ALL with guitars. Frick man, awesome! Oh, and the opening act wasn't half bad but most of the audience wasn't paying any attention to, you ready? RUSH! What a double billing that was! I drank 3 or 4 QUARTS (yes 32 ounces) of Genesee Beer, a great upstate NY brew to this day I think. I fired up a doobie or 2 and was happy as hell and higher than freakin' kite by the end of the show. Me and my buddy crashed in the dorm room of a couple really nice chicks, stayed up most of the night listening to music and smokin' some shitty Vermont "Green" they called it. I am an old man now and while I can't recall where I put my car keys half the time, I remember this great night of my early 20's like it was yesterday. I even remember one of the girls names! Dig that! Rock and roll keeps me alive now. Hope I didn't bore y'all! Thanks for reading.

    Man, I saw BOC at the Cow Palace two or three times back in 78-79 and they never failed to produce! The last show had Godzilla movies playing before the curtain went up. It had a baby Godzilla and everything. Then the finale with the big model! That one shot fire instead of steam though as I recall!!! ... Sounded so awesome!
