The Great Allied Maneuvers | April - June 1943 | Second World War

  • Even with little hope of making an impact against the Germans, the struggle for freedom continued. Polish Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto rose up in the face of the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps, German army units were needed to deal with the situation. The French Resistance was formed, and with Dambuster raids attacking the industrial Ruhr, Allied progress was slow but sure.

At 4:25 the first island taken by US is stated as Guadalcanal. I think Tulagi was taken first, or at least, before Guadalcanal.

They were both invaded on the same day by the US 7th May. Tulagi, being 2 square kilometers, was over in a day. It took 6 months to suppress all Japanese resistance on the island.
Technically speaking that is inaccurate. The first country to be invaded by the US was....Iceland, by presidential decree: 7 July 1941, President Roosevelt announced to the Congress of the United States that the United States had landed forces in Iceland as a means of preventing German forces from taking control of the country's vital shipping and air ways.

Interesting and informative. Excellent photography job making it easier for viewers to better understand what the orator was describing. Historians did a very good job presenting actual facts from fiction. Class A research project!!! Fortunately the disillusioned amphetamine addict Hitler. Refused to take the advice of his seasoned/experienced generals. That slowly led to the axis powers down fall. Rough combat operations on both sides. Special thanks to the allied forces/civilian resistance who fought/perished/survived fighting the axis powers. Slowly defeating them.

The fighters sent after Yamamoto were P38s, twin-boom, twin-engine craft, which did not fly off carriers.
The episode risked the secrecy of 'Magic' and 'Ultra'. It could have been a very costly act of revenge . . .

Agile explanation and well edited. Maybe we need to know more about the common people in places that were heavy war locations. In Tunisia, Morocco and Libia, without commerce liberty in the Mediterranean Sea, their coastal cities were exposed to tragedy.

Unlike the writers of this otherwise wonderful documentary I feel no regret for allied bombing on axis targets. I get a bit chagrined when Germans -in real time-and those with hindsight refer to the “beastly bombing” of Dresden and other axis cities, the “tiny empire of Japan” strikes et al as a moral relativism.
I don’t buy that argument. Not a bit.

The turning point in WW2 was not in North Africa but in Russia. The huge battles in Stalingrad (42-3), then in Rzhev (43) followed a bit later by Kursk (43) were far more damaging in terms of manpower, armaments and the German fighting spirit; at great loss, it was the Russians who punched a huge hole in German invincibility. North Africa was of course important but it was the only battles the western allies were fighting and no where near the scale that was happening on the eastern front.

Admittedly my concept of a God or a creator being is at best rudimentary. It's good enough though that I have gratitude to him,her or it that the human beings that it fell upon to fight & die until Germany, Italy & Japan were defeated. It's not inconceivable that the war could & would have been lost had those men & women from many nations not existed.

The nationalist government advised their US handlers, of their missgivings regarding the Doolittle raid , it was not only no gain strategically nor offensively but as the pilots were to land or ditch in Chinese territory this would attract the unwanted attention and brutally on civilians in those Provences which they did . Estimated to have cost in the vicinity of a 1000000 lives, Anthony Beavor WW2 is where I gleaned the above. If I stuffed it up or mis quoted I'm sure someone will let me know
