  • Quick, rough demonstration of dub mixing, as pioneered by King Tubby's and the engineers working at his Dromily Avenue studio. tape echo, spring reverb, plus something special and secret...

    I've been a dub coniseaur for well over30 yes and I've never heard any mix come even remotely close to sounding like an original King Tubby mix as this does. Well done mate , well done.

    Mixing and creating an authentic dub requires a lot of technique and is more complicated than it seems, requires a lot of skill, the masters of the art in the 70s & 80s truly had a talent when mixing and creating dub styles.

    It makes me REALLY happy to see dub still pulling interest in the world. I remember in the late eighties when two-for-a-dime "deejays" started toasting from Jamaica and England. It was a right earsore!!! In those days they just had to grunt something in patwa and their music was called "reggae"! It's really nice to see the authentic sound still happening.

      The two for a dime deejays as you called them represented a change in reggae at that time to 'dancehall'. I don't know where you come from but patwa was and will always be part of REGGAE maybe you don't understand the patwa?. Toasting and dub go hand in hand they developed around the same time. For example , U.Roy the original deejay worked on the great King Tubby's sound system in the early 1970's in Jamaica. As for dub music, I think it reached its peak in the early 1980's, since that time many people have discovered dub around the world and are now trying to replicate what was done before in Jamaica as shown in this clip.

      I just saw your comment bro... So, this is a belated response.
      Reggae had seen changes throughout the years, and it was great. Dub was a MASSIVE innovation and change in reggae, and it was fantastic! It impacted popular music the world over, *(even though the establishment have yet to acknowledge it)*
      All those changes and innovations NEVER moved reggae away from itself musically, or morphed the music into something different and foreign that reggae aficionados couldn't even relate to, or enjoy.
      That new "change" in the late eighties, lost reggae it's original audience, (in exchange for a new *non-reggae* crowd).
      Toward the late eighties the music had morphed into American copying "rap-tastic" un-reggae sounding drivel. It was a sad time...
      I have absolutely no problem understanding Patwa. I also do not have any issues with Patwa. What I was saying in my previous comment, is that Patwa became a false marker to make music "reggae". So, you could have a perfectly un-reggae song, (which reggae aficionados would never identify as reggae), become "reggae" through the artists singing/toasting in Patwa. The language became a replacement for the music. You could do a song which is outright rock, with rap influences, and as long as it was done in Patwa, the industry would pass it off as "reggae".
      I'm over the moon that dub and reggae in general has found a new audience all over the world. Reggae is the soundtrack of my youth, and I felt lost and sad when that "late eighties change" evicted the real sound.

    This is excellent. Looks like all the instruments are on only 4 tracks and you’re using faders 1&2 for reverb and delay returns, right? I love this song too, I’d be really interested in hearing the original version if you could provide a link...

    • @mihrantheupsetter
      @mihrantheupsetter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hi Ian. Yes, the recording is on 4 tracks (drum, bass, rhythm and lead). In this video I was using fader 1 for echo, and fader 2 for the special King Tubbys unit referred to in the description. I think I had routed the reverb output to the mixer's dedicated effect return channel, as its level through the mix is static. At the moment the music is still unreleased, though I do have a straight mix as well as a dub. When the time is right, it will be released through the right channel..
